I'm Kenneth Edward Barnes and I'm an outdoor writer and author of many books of several genres. In the fall of 2019, Henry sent me their new Garden Gun and I tested it with several different shot shell loads and at several ranges. I also tested other smooth bore .22s and several .22s with riffling. I have an article about my results in my book "Barnestorming the Outdoors: Revised edition" on Amazon. I have used the little .22 shot shell since I was fourteen and that was in 1965. The CCI shot shell was the worse in pellet count and in pattering. The pellets in the shot shells from CCI are not uniform in size, some are number 12, but many others are even smaller and are size dust, which is the smallest size I know of. I tested the shot shells from Federal, Remington, Winchester, and one from Mexico.

They didn't think about it they did it for many years I have some old NRA clay targets made for .22 LR smooth bore competition they are just over 1" in diameter every body keeps saying they don't pattern good when they are using the wrong gun 😂😂😂 I bet their 12 ga. Rifled barrel patterns bad too 😂😂😂😂

I had a rat issue last year & took care of several with the .22 shot shells at close range using a vinjtage single shot with rifled barrel. Once I heard about the Henry smooth bore I immediately went about trying to get one. Took over a year waiting for a Canadian vendor to finally get several examples so I snapped one up. Haven't shot it yet but it's nice to know via your video that the shells pattern much better. Money well spent for me. ;-)

I had to run out & order one, since they weren't released in the Western Mass area yet, or NH or VT, but one finally materialized in NH for me. I have a few other Henrys in .45-70, .44, & .410, & enjoy all of them. Best regards, Barry

I had a smooth bore bolt action single shot for rats... The pattern with these specific rounds was really random. Sometimes they were really clean like Buffalo showed. Sometimes the capsule stayed together and produced one hole. Weird.
I prefer a really old Charter Arms .22 revolver, with worn out rifling. Great at 10 feet.

Henry makes iconic firearms. It's an unequivocal rodent and pest slayer. But, use the CCI .22 shot. Rifle built for this ammunition. I almost feel guilty for how many pests I eliminate.

Thanks for a great video and comparison, Buffalo.
I had a struggle with using shot loads in .38 and .22 revolvers fro snake protection. I KNEW they just HAD TO BE the best thing for the job, but the number of snakes that just crawled away with little visible effect was discouraging. (In retrospect, a snake that crawls away is a "win" even if the the shot load only scared it) At that time we had the crimped type .22 shot loads and I made up shot loads for .38 Special on handloading equipment using #9 shot we had in abundance for skeet shooting. Of course, I was shooting them from a rifled barrel in a handgun. I used a small charge of Bullseye and 2 card wads cut from the cardboard which came in shirts using an overly "chamfered" .38 Special case to contain the shot. I found that within the effective range of a shot load (under 10 ft.), I could just as easily kill a rattlesnake with a .22 LR or .38 Wadcutter bullet. Any snake beyond that distance would likely be passed unnoticed, and if it was noticed, could easily be avoided. I didn't go out of my way to shoot snakes.
The smoothbore extends the range to be more effective at longer rangers...20 ft. Could be useful for rat or pigeon shooting in the barn.

22Plinkster did a video with these where he compared the pattern of them out of from a long barrel to a like 1 inch barrel small snub nosed pistol and what was interesting was that the longer the barrel the more scattered the shot was. The 1 inch barrel had the tightest and best grouping. Not sure why, but I’m guessing that the rifling makes it scatter more.

Those .22 shotshells are made for about 10 feet. If a snake is farther away than 10 feet, it’s not a threat. Additionally, these rounds are made to be shot through handguns. To that end, you’d have a lot better results with .38 Special, .44 Special, or .45 ACP shotshells. They have more, and bigger, pellets.

Yes,..I was about to ask, how would the '22 cal Henry Shotgun handle the normal .22 ammunition? I like the looks of that smooth bore Garden Gun model!
I got some useful information here,..I've always wondered how 'shot shells' worked in a rifled barrel, now I know.
Thanks for doing this video Buffalo, I know it must have taken a fair bit of your time to make this, and I appreciate it.

It took me several hours at the range and a couple more to edit it together but I enjoy it. Glad you got some useful information from it. Also I had no intention of shooting any solids through but due to the volume of comments I got from this video it looks like I will have to at least shoot a few through it and post a video on how it does with them. Thanks for your comment, a lot of folks don't realize the time that goes into a video like this. You can see it was starting to get dim out in that last clip!

Barell said shot shells only, I’m guessing accuracy must not be the greatest with standard .22 ammo. Thanks for this video I didn’t know Henry made a smooth bore.

Exactly. It's not made to stabilize bullets. It's built for a very specific purpose.

Birdshot in crimped cartridges is much more powerful than CCI’s capsulated.
Crimped cartridges = Remington & Winchester. Now that said, CCI’s 22wmr or “Magnum”, has a lot of power, even out of a revolver.
I’ve shot mice at close range with the 22wmr in a 5” barrel revolver and there wasn’t much left.

    A Boomer here,
I remember seeing crimped 22 shot shells. I think that was before plastic was invented!

They still make them, I have a couple boxes of the Federal crimped shotshells. They are quite a bit louder than the CCI!

Great video- that stuff doesn’t have a lot of pellets, it’s fun to shoot, but mostly useless. Ive thought of carrying it in my 22 revolver when hiking just for snakes- but then you can do the same with 44 Magnum, or 38 special as easily..

How about just walk around the snake and leave it be? If you've got time to draw and shoot, you've certainly got time to take a step or 2 back, and that's all it takes.

I see all of the other comments asking how this gun will perform with bullets instead of shot. I’m curious too, but......Your closeup view of the barrel show the warning from Henry that this gun is for use with shotshells only. Give Henry a call before you try bullets in it. Perhaps there is a bore diameter constraint which could elevate pressure to unsafe levels.

I have an old Savage Mark I bolt smoothbore. Sort of heavy. I think your Henry would be a lot more fun to cycle. I've tried the CCI shotshell. I get better results with the Winchester crimped shotshell. Don't even know if Winchester makes them anymore. I really enjoyed the video. Thanks.

I don't have any of the Winchesters but I have a couple of boxes of the Federal crimped style. They are substantially louder than the CCI, I don't know if they are loaded hotter or what. Thanks for the comment!
