  • Apparently there are many a horror story about the Hornby B12/3, and my experience with the R3544 variant of the model is not any better. Let's talk about burned out mechanisms and what to do with dead models.

Hey Flying Scott, why not you send your B12 to Sam's Trains. I mean he has done a video tutorial of how to fix the Hornby B12 by replacing the motor with a coreless motor.

Try putting a scalextrics racing motor in it

So with the B12, Sam’sTrains did a video about a year ago on fixing his B12 by putting a coreless motor (similar to what Bachmann have been using in their recent small locos) into his. In the end, it ran very well. The only problem is that you need a 3D Printer to make adaptors for it, and I don’t know if you have one. If you don’t, it’s a good investment as you can make Wagons, Coaches and buildings for your layout with it. If you want to see Sam’s videos, just look up Hornby B12 and you should be able to find the videos he did on the locomotive. P.S Mike @ModelRailwaysUnlimited also did some good videos on showing some of the other running issues he had with his B12, and found that some of the motor bearings were not in place, among several other issues such as the motor drawing too much current.

Rip the b12, they have massive motor problems. I bought the same black one and the motor just gave up. Maybe do Sam’s trains motor swap? He put a nice coreless motor in it

i'd say if you do wanna make it a runner again, your best (and possibly only) choice is a motor swap. Otherwise you could turn it in to a static model or smth idk

I had the same problem..got a replacement Motor from Lendons of Cardiff...what a difference runs perfectly now...phew..

It’s a bit sad that Hornby couldn’t make a decent mechanism, for 6 driving wheels with basic side motion.

I have a Hornby B12/3, which I got for Christmas 2020, long before I was aware of the motor issues, now I'm worried of running it.

I had the same problem, sent mine to Mark's trains for a new motor after sending it to Hornby 3 times and each time it came back with the same issue. works fine now

I've got two B12s and so far I haven't had a problem, but a significant number of people have had ones with dodgy motors. The same with the S15s which had the same motor.
I'd say you have two options either replace the motor or sell it as a non runner.

Well my suggestion, take it apart, bodge the motor for any motor. This may sound bad, but i see it like this, its internal stuff, if it doesn't work out theres a body shell covering that up. My thing is id rather own ugly locomotives that look a bit poor that run very well.

I had this same experience with a Dapol N Gauge Britannia-class 'Firth of Clyde'. It's an absolutely stunning model to look at. But it came from the factory with a shorted motor and even after replacing the motor the model still runs poorly and tends to overheat a bit (not nearly as badly as it did with the short, though). For some reason it seems like the model tends to waddle like a Pannier tank engine and this lifts the wheels off the rails every now and then, causing it to lose power.

I have two defunct J15 locomotives (both of them broke due to my fault.) I have removed the motors and drive gears and now they are desk toys or just idle locomotives on an otherwise unused siding of the layout.

I got my B12 before I realised how unreliable the mechanism can be. Now I just use mine for static display (for reference, mine is 8573 in LNER apple green).

We've all had experiences like this. Unfortunately it seems to me that beautiful locos that do not perform to an acceptable standard are becoming more common. Not acceptable, good performance trumps everything else in my book. Motor issues with the B12 are well known (weren't Hattons offloading them at bargain prices a while back?) so your best bet is motor replacement.

It's the rivet counters. They keep demanding more and more detail at the expense of performance and reliability, and then go absolutely batshit whenever someone doesn't bend over backwards for them. They've fucked over N-scale couplers here in the US by demanding these tiny, barely functional "scale" sized knuckles that decouple when you even look at them funny.

  • @jeannedarcalterberserker8620

It's so sad since it's truly a beautiful locomotive and Hornby should be completely ashamed of releasing a model like this. I suggest you take it to the repair shop and see if they can make it work again, it's not acceptable to bring a new locomotive to the bench, but it's better than having it sit around. That one time a locomotive broke down beyond repairs, I turned it into a static display. For your locomotive, however, I think you should try one more time. Either a motor swap like Sam's Trains or letting someone repair it. It's too good of a model to not see it run. I wanted one myself, but seeing this is apparently a widespread issue, I'll pass until Hornby does something about it.

Have you tried peter's spares? they offer a repair service or there is the youtuber 00Bill you could contact to try and get it repaired,
I own both B12's you featured in the video plus an extra one and I've never had any issues with them, I think Hornby had a bad batch of the motors they use for them. one issue I had was with a GWR King the tender pickups were causing a short of some kind which lead to the motor overheating, I sent the loco to Hornby's repair team and they replaced the tender chassis and its worked ever since, I thought I'd mention it since you said you had seen smoke from the tender. quick note Hornby have a repair service them selves but they only look at loco's made within the last 10 years even if its the same as one from 11 years ago.

Just an unrelated thought, I think you’ve put the driving wheels in back to front as in the wheels with the largest counterweights should be at the front
Not that it’ll fix anything but if all you can do is look at it, unless you try the fix made by other UA-camr starting with S and ending with am’s Trains

I noticed I put them on back to front as I edited the video! But like you said, not like that will save it, stupid thing. Stupid, oh so very pretty thing.

Why not ask sams trains to a motor swap for you so he could use his 3 d printer to make the adaptor for and change it for you
