I have had my GT diesel for 7 years now and I love it. Fantastic fuel economy (get 0.58l/km on my highway/city run to work), incredibly spacious and quiet, very reliable, infotainment system still feels crisp and modern, super quiet and and I love how the back seats can be moved backwards and forwards and reclined.
I saw a 550i GT today. Blacked out. It really is nice.

this car really looks good on the road and in person! great looking and roomy! and fun to drive.
It looks like a Mazda 3 and a BMW 5-series had a lovechild. The front end also reminds me of when you pick a cat up by the scruff of its neck and it stretches its face back.
But then again, that's merely my opinion. I'm sure not everyone shares it.
I like the adjustable rear seats with center console.

The reason for the 8-speed auto is to improve fuel efficiency. It's worked. Mercedes has a 7-speed auto, and Audi uses the tiptronic 8-speed auto as well. Even Chrysler has adopted it with the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger.

Not only that, this transmission will still give it a sporty feel with paddle shifters and will not diminish the performance, especially a BMW. A poor performing BMW? Not on their watch.

not every one will like the looks, but its more useful overall
Both the I-6 and V8 engines make enough power and torque throughout the rev range, so why the hell do they need an 8 speed transmission?
Sounds like a numbers game to me, just so they can compete with other manufacturers.

It does, but the X6 is huge, and not all too practical. If I want a BMW SUV with performance with comfort, I'll take an X5.
