BMW 535D GT - Why BMW's Biggest Mistake is Now A Brilliant Bargain

  • Today I am driving what has to be one of the most controversial BMWs of all time - and there have been quite a few contenders for that honour!
This is an example of the 5 Series GT, an attempt to combine a 5 and 7 series in a unique bodyshell that has hatch-coupe looks and a luxury interior. On paper, it is a great idea - but nobody bought one. Why should you now?

We bought a 320d GT for my girlfriend, it's turned out to be the best decision we made, I wanted an estate, she didn't, she wanted an SUV, I didn't. She wanted a coupe, I didn't. But we needed space. So you can imagine the headache we had. But we saw the GT and it ticked every box, and I really like driving it too, it's a really nice place to sit and is good drive. You get over the looks, and don't see them when you are driving.

I recently bought a 530d GT to do the NC500 as I wanted something that I didn't really care about and had plenty of luggage space and comfort (the "comfort" seats are some of the best I've ever tried), but still had a decent turn of pace and at least some dynamism. It was brilliant over the 2000 miles and averaged 40mpg - with plenty of throttle in the fun bits.
It's really got under my skin and I plan on now keeping it long term!

I tested one but then I noticed that a dealer pre-registered 6 series GT was within reach. The drop in weight of the 6 series due to aluminium panels was noticeable in the driving experience, and so was the harsh ride on 20" run flats which I soon changed to 18".

IMO, the key thing in life is not to listen to what others think about style, as if they're experts or something. Most people aren't even brave enough to choose a colour for fear that others won't like it. Most men seemingly can't even choose their own tie. If you like it, that's really all that matters, especially when buying an already hugely depreciated car.

Makes complete sense as a secondhand car to buy with your head. Just ditch the 20s for higher-profile 18s or 19s on standard tyres and the ride should then become more acceptable.

I own the M Sport 535d and absolutely love it. Loads of cabin space and at 6ft5in a key factor in my choice of car, I don’t need the seat all the way back so rear space isn’t compromised, there’s not many cars I could say that about. It’s got all the real world performance you could ever really need and that straight six is sweet. Looks are subjective (I personally like the way it looks) and I like that it divides opinion, it means there’s less on the road. I’ve owned it a couple of months shy of 5 years and for me it’s that good and ticks pretty much every box that I can’t justify changing it (logically it would probably be the 6GT). Just two issues during those 5 years, the first was repaired at BMW’s expense which later led to a manufacturer recall for several models and the second more recently was the pano roof sun blind detaching from one runners - bit of a pain but all things considered not too bad.

I remember being on the new model update course with these and the E84 X1. They were pre production test cars with the 530d and 550i. The rear suspension air bags wear out and leak due to road grit getting stuck in the fold when at normal ride height. With the rear wheels jacked off the ground they stretch and unfold, if you clean out the grit and lubricate with a good rubber care product on a clean rag they last much longer.

I have been driving a BMW 535i F10 N55 for the last 8 years. Yeah, it did cost me an arm and a leg to change worn down parts and maintenance. But when the baby is all suited up and you learn to tame her, she is a beast. I regularly do long distance drives in excess of 350 kms and there is not a single model in the same category that can match her performance. OMG. I call her my Baby M.

I bought one to replace my X5. It is lower than the X5 but has as much if not more interior space and yet higher than the base 5'er. The back seats are huge with climate controls, heated seats, adjustable seating and a tremendous greenhouse feel with the panorama roof open. Gas milage 25% better than the X5. Not as much a looker but definitely more practical and comfortable than either the normally aspired 3 or 5 platforms. In today's market, the dealership I bought it used from is offering me more money than I bought it for one year earlier.

    Some really interesting comments!
I've had a 535i GT (14) for about a year and a half, same model, colour (in and out) and a very similar specification to the version you've reviewed.
I think you're review pretty much spot on. Marmite looks but ultimately very comfortable and capable. Although mine has the 20" (without runflats) the ride and handling can be excellent but it is equipped with adaptive drive (dampers and anti roll bars). The option makes a huge difference to the versatility, comfort and handling (offering sport+ and comfort+ modes).
Lots of things to check if buying second hand. The motor is strong but check for vanos issues. Various trim etc that most the BMW's from this era seem to suffer from. If you've a panaramic roof (which is amazing!) be careful of the blind, as the material can pull away from the metal "frame". An expensive fix!

Great review Jay, spot on with these cars. The big BMW lineup with the 308bhp diesel are mostly solid and cracking value for money. I bought a 640d GC 2 years ago and has been trouble free, plus it hasn't deprecated due to the bonkers car market, and has all the comforts and power I'll ever need. It's better looking than the 5GT. Would recommend got someone looking for bargain luxury!

I have a 3gt like the one shown, msport, estoril blue. I always get compliments on it. Pictures do not do it justice. Loads of room as based of Chinese limo wheel base, better handling, can get same engines,

Right there with you: I've been a blacked out 328i GT owner for three years now, and man, it pains me to say that I really can't think of a faster, roomier, comfier, better equipped and more gas efficient car for the price, without having to sacrifice one or the other. There really isn't. Try it. Sure I understand the hate they get for being different, that's what people on the internet are especially good at, hating everything that is different. If you ask me, they somewhat resemble a dog that is pooping. There, I said it. But hey, I like dogs! Not their poop though - or any poop for that matter - but it kind of comes with the territory. So yeah, I personally couldn't care less about what others think of the styling of the car, when SUV's are considered the current pinnacle of automotive design by the masses. I personally love the bigger, bulkier look, and HATE the impracticality and lack of room in the sedan with a passion. I find the looks of BMW's touring/estate models to be quite bland and dated. Not a lot you can do there, design-wise. Come to think of it, the GT is actually roomier than the touring, so there you go. Another thing to keep in mind is that the later GT models tend to keep their value like crazy in the current market, because people who love them, REALLY do love them (especially since they've been discontinued and replaced by buck toothed crossover monstrosities). But one of their biggest traits to me, is that they lack the truck-like driving characteristics of SUV's of the same size and weight, whilst offering more room, better performance and gas efficiency. And yes, they do lack the 'Hofmeister kink'. So I guess they're not really BMW's after all, and everything's right in the world again.

Excellent review! Absolutely on the money. Bought a 530d GT new 10 years ago instead of Mercedes E Class Estate. Compared with the grey teutonic interior of the MB, the interior is light, bright, brilliantly designed and spacious. The fuel economy on long trips was excellent for a 2.2 tonne vehicle, despite having the uprated aircon for Australia. Had a memorable trip from Brisbane to Melbourne and back. The way it covered the 3000km in quiet, stress free comfort was great. Sold it after 9 years only because the noises from the self-levelling rear suspension, which was replaced the first time under warranty, indicated failure was imminent. The Queensland sun also rotted the sunblind - a particularly expensive repair. It is the ultimate hatchback. So practical for my cabinetmaking business!

I wasn’t really thinking about the looks but have frequently found myself walking back to to the carpark at a service station and caught myself wandering what that poiseful, muscle-car-esque Beamer is, then realised it’s mine! :) 40mpg standard. With the extra long chassis/legroom you can fold the seats down and fit a double bed in the back without having to adjust the front seats. And it goes like poop off a poopdeck!

I bought a 2010 535i GT in 2020 and I absolutely love it. The previous owner(s) were less than kind to it, so I've had to spend a fair bit getting it up to snuff (the usual suspects: valve cover gasket, oil filter/oil cooler gaskets, oil pan gasket, comfort access door handles), but other than that I've loved it every step of the way. The car has so much character and it handles much better than its looks would suggest. Mine has 88,000km (about 55,000mi) on it and the engine is strong, the transmission is smooth, the ride is quiet. It's a lot of car for reasonable money if you get one that's been looked after and you keep up with the servicing intervals. I'll admit it isn't the hottest car on the block, but I don't think the infamy the GT series has commanded is well-founded. Just my two cents. :)

I've had mine since 2014, wish BMW had something similar in it's lineup now. The rear bench can slide forwards and backwards and you can tilt the backrests, very practical. And the cabine is so airy and inviting! And because the car is so long, I was able to have my 3 year old facing backwards in his car seat and I could still sit comfortably in front of him.

Appreciate your insight on this car. Did some research a few weeks back and was looking at cars with lots of back seat room (have a toddler and newborn coming who will need a rear facing car seat) and this was one of the better looking options as I would prefer to avoid SUVs and most of the wagons that are available don't have as much rear legroom. Ultimately it isn't "legroom" I need, but room for rear facing car seat so I can drive and a passenger can sit comfortably with the car seats in place. A 535xi GT is available in my area (NJ - US) for under $13,000 USD and based on your review I suspect it will give me just enough performance to enjoy driving, all the room I need and I'm pleasantly surprised to hear how pleased you are with the interior. The one I'm looking at has black interior, but 18x8" wheels so hopefully the tires are more forgiving than the 20s on your tester as roads in New Jersey can be brutal!

My Dad has had many BMW company cars over the last 15 years, including a 5GT and a 6GT, and frankly I thought both were absolutely brilliant. Not only were they the most comfortable cars he ever had, but they're a completely different level of luxury to the standard models (we were used to regular 3s and 5s). Also, the presence and status of these cars was very strong, particularly when they were new.
I think that if you were to get yourself a solid spec model, it'd be a great car to keep long-term, particularly as they are fairly rare on the roads, so they turn heads.

Get rid of the run-flat-tires. Normal tires on 18" wheels. Or/and get a KW suspension kit. Should do wonders. The shattery ride was typical of the late 2000s to early 2010s on many BMWs.

I have the 2018 340GT and love it, and also love that it was almost $10k less than the 340i (non GT) that was the sitting next to it. (Also the other 340i didnt have the panormic sunroof, huge leg + head room in the back, and a convenient hatch.)
If you think you're a race car driver, this probably isn't the best fit, but for everyone else it really checks all the boxes and has plenty of pickup despite being alittle heavier.

I recently bought an 530d GT, coming from maybe one of the best designs and overall performance and economy cars BMW ever made - a 640d coupe. I wanted a practical car, powerful, spacious. There is nothing out there to match the GT in terms of the aforementioned qualities and price. Enourmous interior, great ride (19" and non-run flat tires), great economy and just enough power. This car just wants you to relax, sit back and enjoy. Who cares about what others think, you have the best of all in this car. Just get it and look after it.

Proud owner of this car - everything he said is quite true. I have normal tyres mounted on 19" and it drives like a dream - much better as the stiff and bumpy run flats!
liking cars who are also not so obvious and quite silent in appearance it is perfectly fitting my car needs
Driving it quite a lot on EU highways it is not a shame to give it some speed too! And stepping out after 10 hrs and 1200 km without a stressy backpain.

Another really entertaining vid, thanks. I tried one of these about a year ago, along with a 3-Series GT. Yes, they look awful (subjective I know, but there’s nothing to commend this design). However, what really put me off was the un-engaging drive, despite the decent engine (335d). Handling was only average, the ride was harsh and choppy despite 17” rims and higher profile tyres and it was abysmal in cross-winds. Nothing about it impressed me enough to want one. I think the dire looks was what really made it a sales disaster for BMW I think. And they don’t seem to have learned a lesson with the dreadful grilles on their current range (but that’s for another debate)

I can remember talking to one of the designers, he was extremely proud of it and gave me a signed designer sketch, which I still have. It was a huge flop, but I agree that design has come of age.

I owned a E65 730D, then a E65 745D (diesel V8 twin turbo) and replaced it with this GT535xD. My experience: interior was far better, roomier and even more comfortable (all 3 had the comfort seats). The 3 litre 6 was on paper more powerful, but it was my biggest regret. The 745D V8 was far smoother (even with the older 6 speed ZF) and much more enjoyable as well and had far less of a Diesel vibration. The turn-in and general road holding though was majorly superior to the 7 series (mine had the adaptive suspension and was 90% in comfort and 10% in sport - enjoyed the change in feel). It was the rear passengers that especially preferred the GT though with massively better space, access and overall quality and finish. I loved the head up display, excellent headlights and soft close with comfort access really is luxury that you get to appreciate every time. It wasn’t without faults though (much like my E65s). Rear suspension air bags collapsed (€1000 for the pair at BMW dealer), sunroof headliner tore itself to shreds (another €1000 fix) and finally one door handle’s comfort access failed (€600 parts and paint), but after 5 years of ownership and many many km it never let me down and is a missed companion. If funds allow I may get another as a 2nd car, but with the petrol V8, as the 6 pot lumps just remind me how much better a V8, even a Diesel, is as a power plant.

I never understood why there needs to be a faux-coupe for a large saloon, yet I now own an F34 335d. Mine came up for sale when I was looking for a more practical family car and it was significantly cheaper than an F31 335d, I was shocked at the sheer amount of space when I went to test drive it, rear leg room is among the best I have encountered and the boot, although not the best for carrying large "boxy" items, just swallows up the weekly shop along with a pram, scooters and other pariphernalia that my children decide to bring along. I won't have it said that the 5 GT is better looking than the 3 GT and you are more than welcome to feature it on the channel if you would like to prove otherwise, haha! It has grown on me, regardless of divisive looks, it does all the family duties with 3 children, gets fantastic economy on longer journeys, has a very rwd bias Xdrive set up that is as playful as you can expect from such a heavy barge and now it has been slightly tuned by the wizards at Unicorn, it has more pace than a large heavy diesel has any right to.

Whilst I'd agree with you that the 5GT is good on paper considering its practicality and features and it certainly is a lot of car for the money at current used prices, I just couldn't live with the way it looks and how big it is.

We looked for a 335d GT but the BMW dealer (Silverlink) could not be in any way bothered and a BMW engineer advised via a friend that the 35d had recurring issues with the twin turbo system and was an expensive repair. We came so close but think we dodged a bullet. If you want one I suggest the less powerful but more reliable 30d or a petrol.

Lot of car for the money, properly nice interior and GT was quick. Just couldn’t live with the looks and sheer size back then so went for the 330d Touring. Secondhand they look great value.
