Wanna learn how to remove a fiberglass bathtub and surround?
Today's video tutorial shares the step-by-step process. My buddy Steve White from SRW Contracting Inc. shows you how he removes a fiberglass tub and surround in 60 minutes.
He's shares all the tools and skills needed to get this project done.
The first thing to do is turn the water off to the house.
That way, if you accidentally cut a pipe it won't flood your bathroom or the adjacent rooms.
Then dismantle all the tub plumbing.
You'll want to remove the
-tub drain
-tub overflow trim piece
-tub spout
-faucet trim plate and
-shower head
Smash any tile or drywall that's directly above the fiberglass surround. This will expose the nails that hold the tub surround to the studs.
Pull those nails with a hammer.
Grab a reciprocating saw and cut the fiberglass tub surround at the corners. Start at the top and go the down to the tub deck.
Then cut along the tub edges.
You can then pull the surround from the wall then the tub.

There's nothing better than helping a friend out with a DIY video that could make their project go a lot better.
Thanks for watching my video, take care, and see you in the next one!!
Cheers,

I have watched a number of removal videos and not one person doing the demolition has stuffed a rag into or capped off the drain. I learned the hard way to stuff something into the drain to avoid large pieces of debris from falling in and plugging the pipes.
After I watched the video and saw your comment, I did. So thanks for reminding me to do that!
Watched this and then demo’d our 1982 bathroom. Great video! My only addition - wear long sleeves! (and glasses). I had on glasses, but my arms took a beating from shards of tile.
Can’t say it enough. safety glasses🤓
*Thank you! Working on a triplex rehab, I’ll upload videos of some of the work next week! Peace and one love* ✌🏾❤️
awesome, let us know if you have any questions
What a nice bathtube wall! Must be sooo easy to clean.
Great video! I came looking for answers and I got them. And honestly the lack of safety equipment taught me the importance of its use. I learned from your mistakes:) thanks again!
Good demo video, gives me renewed resolve to DIY. I gotta say, "SAFETY GLASSES"... you only get one chance to protect your eyes.
When cutting through fiberglass, you should probably add “dust mask”. That stuff is brutal in the lungs. 👍😊
Agree. Had to stop watching video. Can't trust anyone who doesn't know enough to use goggles when using a grinder or smashing ceramic tile
Very helpful!! Thanks 👍
Argh, I really needed to see how to remove the drain pipe! Trickiest part!
Very, very helpful, thanks for posting this.
Greatvid. I wish you did more vids on this, especially showing the end result.
With that music in the background I was wondering if this was gonna turn into a 70’s porno vid 😂😂
It was very helpful.
Very helpful video. Thank you!
Do you have a video of installing one?
Thanks so much for the awesome video. I was hoping to see how to remove and enlarge that weird “pop out” wall that holds the plumbing. My master bathroom is small but I’m hoping to find a way to remove that wall and fit in both a tub and a shower replacing my awful tub/shower combo. If you have any tips please let me know.
Dude-safety glasses!! Put em on 👍🏻👍🏻
As you can see the piece of drywall in his eye 😂
Me and my girlfriend definitely want to hire him to come replace the bathtub ^_^
Do it yourself
Thank you so much for your excellent videos. I have a bit of an issue trying to get the handle off my Mowen shower faucet because the alin nut is striped. Any help on guiding me there this would be appreciated
Break off the faucet steam and replace with new.
This little ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxVoi3B4CB6Oygq1-vo4OTL1M_M5JkrXif tub works perfect in our 6 x 6 shower and is easy to get in and out. Also easy to drain.
Thanks so much amazing job❤
Thanks for sharing. I have a one piece tub and would like to change it to a deeper tub and shower. Any success with a project like that?
Thank you very much for a helpful video. Is it possible to remove that fiberglass tub without cutting (I don't want to mess with the fiberglass dust)? I assume as it was installed originally, it could be removed same way. Maybe to cut out a sheetrock wall from another side to disconnect all pipes which stick out from that fiberglass plate? And is it a shut off valve which disconnect water on that part only, or you need to install it? We got a slab leak under the bath tub and a company suggests to brake tile on the floor. I see there is no concrete under the tub, so it would be way easier to get to the problem point, no jack hammering, no dust. I would appreciate any opinion on this matter.
most of those tubs are installed when the house is being built not after... there is no easy way to remove them in one piece as he said in the beginning.
you seem like a really nice guy. real cool. nice ob man!!
Great video!!!
awesome video... thanks
How much for a job like this
The demolition is very therapeutic!😆
why would you use that long of a blade to 1/8 inch of fiberglass
I hear that! no need to make a costly mistake by cutting something you couldn't see
Just the tip ?
Thank you!!!
Yes wear protective clothing as well, that fiberglass will get places that you do not want it.
So I do this job a couple times a week and most the time we avoid destroying the drywall around the tub. This saves you and the customer time and money. The tubs have a 1.5 lip around the top and sides that is under the drywall. If you start jerking it off you will break the drywall, We cut the lip in the corners and leave the lip because it is feathered into the drywall. then we install some type of waterproof finish cover, Usually acrylic or surround backing.
Thank you!
happy to help
Thank you! Very helpful!
Wait... dude was that blood in your face?
I saw that too lol
Question, I'm about to do this very thing, but I want to keep the drywall corners where the tub flange is. What is the best way to remove this without destroying the drywall corners?
Chris M Carefully cut through the drywall so that when you pull pieces out of the tub, you don't break out chunks, just a clean line where you cut- sometimes, you'll just have to re-drywall and/or replace the corner bead. It will take longer, but if you're careful, you can do demolition without making more work for yourself than you wanted.
Thanks
Can the water be turned on at this stage to be able to do inside work?
After watching this I tore out my tub today. And of course, unfortunately i managed to hit a pipe when cutting down the tub vertically. The people who had added on the bathroom onto our house (previous owners) did a bad job on not just the plumbing but the entire bathroom, but the pipe was literally directly against the tub in the corner so sure enough I cut it lol. Even by using just the tip of the saw and cutting at an angle, still hit it. Luckily I purchased a shark bite and it fixed it pretty easily in case anyone else winds up having a similar issue
I have a bathroom just like that and I want to get rid of the fiberglass. How much does it cost to get rid that kind of tub and replace it?
Besides fiberglass, what are other better types of tubs out there?
cast iron is the best (heavy though), Kohler makes a good acrylic, and American Standard has their Americast line (very solid tub).
Is there realistically any way to remove a bathtub without disturbing the tile around it? I'm buying a house where the owners put in new tile around a tub that's so old it has cave paintings on it.
Groceryhauler07 u could just sand down the bathtub and re enamel it
Yep better off re painting it. Did yoi go that route?
I love how he says um a lot
i wish you would have shown the disconnection of the drain
Mask and safety glasses a must. I did this but so much dust and I wear contacts. Easy to remove just take it piece by piece with sawz all. He should have done plumbing how.to remove.
I hope there is a part 2. Good job buddy
thank you, we have multiple Part 2s...what kind of shower are you wanting to build?
@@HomeRepairTutor thank you for replying. We are removing exactly what you pulled out. A tub/shower and want to install a simple shower only stall. No tub. Yes glass doors.
@@DiannaAtherton great project, we have a bunch of tutorials showing different types of showers, e.g. Schluter, Wedi, KBRS, etc. If you've chosen your system and know the tile, we can give you some links to those videos here on UA-cam
@@HomeRepairTutor going with a 12 inch porcelain tile and I would love stainless trim. My sink is a very large stainless undermount.
@@DiannaAtherton very cool options, just make sure to use the right thin-set with your shower system. We like Delta, Moen, Grohe, and Hansgrohe faucets
Is it possible to only remove the surround and not the tub? This way I can tile the wall.. I know these units are one piece but not sure if the surround can be cut out.
you could but I suggest that you replace the whole unit.
You could do that, never be happy with it, then rip it out and replace it in a few years (after repairing the leak damage that will inevitably occur).
Would you need to turn off Main Water from outside ??? Before Removing Tub ??
I want to know that as well!
I didn't see much dust or fragments from the many cuts? Is that normal?
Use eye protection when pounding tile with a 🔨 hammer. And I'd use a short bimetal blade (4" max) to prevent cutting plumbing and electrical. My preference for cutting is to cut smaller sections. And I'd take my time checking what's behind the walls. Too many videos make the job look fast and easy. But....one screwup (cutting electric wiring or plumbing lines.....) And you've got a mess! Use a mask 😷.
Turn the power off for the house when cutting into the wall blindly?
I wish he had shown how he removed the drain part. Also, is there a "next" video of him converting the tub/surround to a walk in shower? I'd like to see it.
2 huge screwdrivers crossed and turn left slowly
you probably dont care but if you're bored like me during the covid times then you can watch pretty much all the latest movies and series on instaflixxer. I've been binge watching with my brother recently =)
@Kace Taylor yup, have been watching on instaflixxer for since november myself :D
Thank you. Very informative.
Can you do mine?
my shower tub is cheap fiber glass with walls I want to remove and install walk in shower measure bathroom wall to wall 58 inch but the shower pan I want to buy is 60 inch you think will fit because I cant find 58 inch walking shower pan please advise ?
In re: the Sawzall: "I'm using a wood/metal blade..."
Me: "a wooden saw blade??" 🤔
(For only just a **single split second** BUT STILL 😂😂😂 good grief 🤪)
he didnt look to happy after he removed everything and seen he was going to have reroute all that plastic piping lol
I just did the same thing in an old house and though those fiberglass all-in-ones are ugly, after seeing the same thing the cammer saw behind the tub--no moisture or wet framing--i can see why these are a thing.
Hi, I am planning to remove my bathtub but does this require to turn off the main water line or can i do it without turning off waterline?
It's best to turn off the water but if you can't you should be okay. The water lines are not attached to the tub. That said, if you're redoing the mixing valve you'll have to turn off the water main.
Bald so hard
Nice safety glasses!
We should have worn them
@@HomeRepairTutor this is the reason people with no skill get hurt. They think they can copy you!
@@screamqueen4282 hopefully people also use their judgement, that's why our videos are only for adults.
WHAT gross things can you find under these tubs, lizards, bugs, mice? How much does the tubs weigh with water vs another FG tub or a heavier tub?DO you have to insulate behind the fixtures because ,when running water downstairs, why can someone hear it upstairs?Do the fixtures have to be braced, sometimes I hear rattling? What do you think about those walk-in tubs?
Learn how to form sentences without 100 comma's please 😂
Next time might want to show what you are having to grind and how on the drain assembly. Having to watch another video since mine isn't as easy
Will do
I already know I'm going to expose a lot of termite damage when I take my surround tub out.😯 Looking into a HydroBlok system and doing my own tiling.
So what is the average price of a removal of bathtub to put in a walk-in shower anybody knows out there
Breathing in those fiberglass particles, I guess.
Good info. I was hoping for some magic but its the same nasty approach I have used in the past. The reason for my comment is "Steve" never put on a pair of safety glasses. Grinder with no guard is outside the preferred method but sometimes unavoidable. Safety glasses? I guess he could lose one eye, then start wearing them.
I had a young tile guy come give me a bid on something. I saw him a couple months later he was missing an eye. Ouch.
That looks like particle board flooring under that tub/shower pan.
I'm in the process of removing 55 sheets of particle board from the flooring in my house and replacing it with OSB. The moisture areas will get moisture resistant plywood.
Wear your glasses boys and girls. Safty is a must😎...
I wonder If i can still win that saw
I as a woman I would wear safety glasses and a mask lol but thanx guys!! 🙌
That's why women live longer than men
At 4:46 you can see blood trickling down below Steve's left eye.
Same process for a mobile home? Never worked on a mobile home/trailer before. Neighbor pipe burst during last winter they never fixed the leak and yeah I don't want their water bill. And now their floor caved I and ceiling is dropped and sink popped up out the vanity. Swollen wood and wallboard.
What! No wires behind there?
That tub and surround looks to be in decent shape. Too bad but some okay information. Just cannot get past his complete lack of safety for himself AND kaboom he could have totally hit a wire regardless of how shallow he was trying to cut at an angle! T
understand your concern, and we would recommend turning off the power to the bathroom or house if you think there are wires in the wall.
Use a shorter saw blade. Won't be cutting through studs.
Safety glasses??
Where's your safety glasses? At least you're wearing gloves. Good work!
No eye protection removing tile, genius.
Safety glasses?
Next video, how to reroute the vent stack.
good suggestion
Safety glasses brother!
Hi.
EYE PROTECTION!
hi buddy. is there anything you don't do? ^-^
did i win the saw... I've been waiting for years for a answer
I think that an argument has been made for a separate tub surround. It would have been nice to save the tub.
Why are there wires in a bathroom area anyway
When cutting and handling fiberglass you should wear protective clothing. Anyone who has ever gotten that dust in their pores, lungs or eyes will tell you... it sucks!
tiporari totally agree, always good to wear a respirator and goggles :D
This pussy generation 🐱🐈
Yep, at least long sleeves and safety goggles, I use a fiberglass ladder and when it’s come to recoating time, my arms get filled with the fiberglass. I have found that a dryer sheet gently glided above skin, will, I guess create static to draw the fiberglass out. I’ll admit it doesn’t completely remove it but it definitely makes it a lot easier. Also, take a super cold shower, which sucks, but that’ll shock your pores and draw the fiberglass out. Both ways suck but hey it’s better than the feeling of tons of glass inside your skin lol
@@logic8019 The guy was bleeding from his cheek. Real pussy? I don't think so, just in to much of a rush.......
@@logic8019 Agreed !!
Drives me crazy seeing so called trained, skilled tradesmen working without safety glasses on. When you have to squint and turn your head in anticipation of something hitting you, that's a sign you need safety glasses!
very true and we should have worn them, we're doing a better job of that these days.
Came here to say this. Use appropriate air filteation/dust mask too. 2x in the spirit of training and learning.
Said as a fan of this channel. Thank you for sharing.
Please wear safety glasses when you break tile.
And your masks.
Right omg tile is no joke when beat on..
Dude thinks he’s Superman cutting up that fiberglass with no mask
Okay, first off, Thank You for sharing your advice! Here's some stuff I'm shy about getting into with this sort of project: Am I going to have solder a pipe? How long will the awful drain be open? Wires are scary. Is there a better way to find them? Thanks Guys!
Christine Taylor you might have to solder a pipe but we have a good video on that. You can stuff a rag in the drain to prevent any sewer gas, it'll be open for as long as it takes to install the new shower or tub. Not really a great way to find the wires if they are hidden behind the tub unless you have open access on the other side. Always feel free to ask any questions :D
smash holes with a hammer on the outside drywall
Better to cut with a grinder at a set depth
Where is the respirator mask from fiberglass dust?
no protection the left side of his face was bleeding
until you get older & find out how 'macho men' become broken down ol dudes..
wear protection!
real contractors mottos typ refer to SAFETY FIRST!
I got an estimate for removing an fiberglass bathtub and surround, Then to replace with a tub and to tile the surround to the ceiling and tile the floor of abathroom that is 85in x 89in . the tub surround has side walls that are 32in back wall 58in and the height is 82in. I got a quote of $8000.00 this also includes new fixtures is this an fair quote. I am not handy with this type of thing.
too much but it also depends on what type of fixtures you get.
and it also depends on where you live, the installer's access to the site, disposal/cleanup, materials involved, etc.. but likely yes someone is looking at making a decent profit on the job based on what they know, have learned, and arent afraid to do..
Good rule labor normally cost about as much as materials but occasionally some cost more material sometimes labor but also good to get a few quotes and go with the medium or a well known and well reviewed person
With a price tag like that I'm suddenly glad I plan to do that type of project myself!
Can you count how many times this guy says "um"?
Take out tub dain
Notice at 4:36 looks like a tile shard cut his cheek just below the eye need those glasses regardless hood video
20 year old steel tub was a pain to remove
Watching him remove tile without glasses made me really nervous. Having removed tile a couple of times before, those shards fly out of nowhere and can easily take an eye out without safety glasses.
need to be carfull since there may be electric wires in the walls too
Great ! forget the glasses , you know when you need them.. I rarely wear safety glasses, but i do when I feel it is appropriate
