Great instructional video!! I was lost trying to figure out what I needed to mount my bike!! Thanks!!
Excellent video. I have a 2016 Wahoo Kickr which worked great with my prior quick release skewer bike. When I bought a new bike with a thru axle this video was very instructive in showing how I could quickly convert from quick release to thru axle. Cheers.
I think You're the only one that talks about this thru axle thing! I was so frustrated with my Kickr Snap. So thanks for your video.
Glad I could help!
Finally a video about this always worried about the turbo clamping the carbon through axel dropouts- many thanks
Huge thanks for this. I got a cannondale superX and want to get a snap, was not sure about these adapters, but now my order is on the way :D
Another great video Shane 👍👍👍
Great video, very in depth. Thanks!
Had one for a while now for kickr 1, but don't forget to put the brake pad shim in, for when you pull the lever.
Great video as always
Many thanks, the printed instructions didn't seem to make a huge amount of sense .. but your video made perfect sense and yes, was a 'snap' to follow
IMO, this is an advantage of the Cycleops Hammer. The TA works like a TA, instead of being converted into a QR.
Will the kickr work with a specialized diverge A1? With these adapters?
Hi, I’m just wondering when you were screwing in the axle, was there any resistance? I hand screwed in the axle and when I went to tighten the rest with an Allen key, there seemed to be quite a bit of resistance. I don’t want to force it, but perhaps this is normal?
I tried the 142x12 adapter for my MTB (Camber Comp Carbon) and whilst it attached without issue, it wasn't a great ride feel using the gear ratios on the MTB and just felt a bit strange in the MTB position edit: Wahoo Kickr
Hi there, I have a frame, Rondo Ruut, where the rear derailleur hanger needs to be put in place in the same hole where my thru axle goes in. So if I remove my thru axle and put this kit in the Kickr, this won't fit, the QR won't go through my frame as there is my hanger placed. Solution to get this bike on the trainer?
Thanks for the video! Can you advice me on: What do i need for a boost (148mm thru Axle) for my Cube Reaction Race 2020?
One for Wahoo Support.
Suggestion. I don't know if it is possible, but if you could include the links to the page where we can order these. I'm searching for them on the wahoo site and Amazon... and still havn't found them. Maybe they will give you a 'bump' if you do.
Still unsure, I have the Gen2 Kickr and bought the adapter kit in order to fit my 2020 Emonda disc, and then I found comments stating that the newer versions of the Kickr are incompatible with recent Trek disc bikes. Both Wahoo and Trek have advised me to be very cautious. I think that the newer Kickr's use actual through-axles while the adapter kit for this Kickr generation is a skewer. I am reluctant to even try putting my bike on and damaging it and am considering replacing the trainer but that is a considerable investment to make (and nobody currently has trainers in stock). Does anyone have any (be it positive or negative) experience with this?
Hi, huge thanks for this video !
Following what you did, I believe I should be putting the end cap on for my bike as well. Yet, when I do that, the drive side of my kickr snap is touching my frame, which is not the case when I don't put on the end cap. I was thinking about using it without the end cap, what are your thoughts on this?
The SNAP trainer clamp should not touch the frame. Best contact Wahoo Support on this one.
Thanks for video review! Very helpful! Where I can buy the kit for thru-axel and Kickr Gen.1? Thanks!
Any local store should be able to get this. Ping Wahoo Support if you can't locate the part anywhere.
My skewer is to short. Can I get a longer skewer. Going from regular road to gravel bike thru axel
Hi, since you have a disc brake bike, will you do tests on clearance issues with Direct drive trainer such as the Tacx Flux, specifically the rear brake calliper?
If I have time. The bike has to go back shortly. Tacx (or your local store) should be able to help you with specific details on clearance/etc if I don't get to it.
Thanks!
Hi Shane - thanks for sharing . Can ai keep this kikr adapter permanently for outdoor ride as well
Yeah, that'll work. You'll need to take a hex key with you for any tyre changes.
Hi Shane, thanks for the update. Quick question excluding cost, if all priced the same would you buy a kickr (smart) or a tacx neo or a tacx dorito (🤣🤣). Thanks bud
If you need low noise: Neo. If noise isn't #1 priority, then gplama.blogspot.com.au/p/indoor-trainer-guide-gplama.html
Recently bought that exact bike and have no problems with the 142 x 12 mm kit. When away at work I have a JetBlack Z1 Fluid trainer which would have similar fittings to the Snap. Unfortunately I'm still waiting for simone there to contact me back in regards to a kit. Might have to look somewhere else.
Oliver S yes I have seen them. Think that's probably my go.
Hi, My road disc brake bike has a 135x10 thru axle! Any recommendation? Would I be able to use the Kickr snap? Please help!
That's one for Wahoo Support. Looks like you're out of luck with the Kickr, but I'm not sure about the SNAP. support.wahoofitness.com/hc/en-us/articles/204281824-Will-my-bike-work-with-the-KICKR-
Would it be possible to make a video using Cervelo's RAT Thru Axle System? Have been searching around with no luck. Thanks in advance!
Not likely sorry, I don’t have access to that tech. (Cervelo)
Great job, but that skewer hanging on the back of the Kickr really worries me, needs an end cap :D Is there any planned video to test ride that roubaix?
+Luis GO V If you get snagged on that indoors you're doing it very wrong! :). Roubaix goes back in a few days. No outside rides or mad skids :(
thanks Shane is the through axle kit best ordered through wahoo on their website?? or you mentioned it is USD30 where in the states did u order it from?
Wahoo online or any local store that stocks them will be your best bet.
Where can I buy the disc brake “shim” to insert when I remove the wheel? I am new to disc #savetherimbrake
might want to use a bleed block to avoid hitting the rear break lever and mess up the brake pads
Hi Thanks! One question: why did You Not also change The right into The left aluminium ring?
It doesn't need changing.
That Kickr Snap is so quiet... mine is defective and the flywheel vibrates and makes tremendous noise. I was never able to replace it because Wahoo did not have replacement units available (start of the pandemic) and when they finally did, I had moved to a different country with no local support...
Does the Kickr Snap still provide enough resistance when not plugged in to warm up for a race?
Sure, but it's wiser to get a cheap standard trainer and use that for races where it can be thrown around in the car and get a dusting of rain on it.
I didn’t even know you need a axle. I just order it today thank God my bike won’t be ready until the 28th
Not sure if you need that with the newer kickr (core), it comes with rings for thru axles
just have to remember to use the disc lock out tab so you don't accidentally pop the pistons if you are in the zone and grab a hand full of brakes :P
good idea
yes that would be very bad
I have Trek bike with thru axle 12X165, i see that kickr snap adapters are only 12X142, does they fit on my bike?
This is one for Wahoo Support. I'm not sure on a 165mm with the SNAP sorry.
Shane can you tell me what you have in your hand to untighten and retighten so I can order that
At 2:00? That's just a 6mm hex tool.
Just a note: I just purchased a 2017 kickr and the new kit use your bikes actual thru axle. The kickr does come with the adapters.
The Kickr17 does, yes.
Just ordered a 2018 canyon endurace al 7.0 I already have a Kickr snap will it be compatible with the canyons bike?
I have no idea, that's one for Wahoo, Canyon, or maybe someone who knows the bike a lot more than I do.
I think it could be a problem. My Canyon Endurance disc has a plastic plate in front of the axel on the drive side. Don't know if there is an adapter to replace the plastic plate because it also holds the drop out and rear derailleur. I think I will go for a roller then there is no issues. I don't compete on Zwift only work out.
Hi Shane, does a Specialized SCS Roubaix thru axle fit on the Kickr2 and Snap with these parts or will some other adapters be required?
The two adapter kits shown fit all Wahoo Kickrs (Kickr, Kickr2/16, SNAP, SNAP17) at this point, for this bike.
Thank you Oliver S
Thnx Oliver S for tip. Does that mean there is no Wahoo supplied adapter for my 135x12 thru axle for when fitted to a direct drive trainer? I currently have an original 2015 Kickr and using a M135/R130 spacer supplied by Wahoo for the non-drive side and I have replaced the hex nut with two thinner washers, plus the round edged nut, on the drive side so that the indexing is not put out.
Hi @shane Miller - GPLama Does this adapter work for the Elite Rampa??
I don't believe so.
@@gplama How can I make a canyon with a Thru Axle 12x142 mm - 200 mm Traxle Fine T-2100 compatible with the Rampa??
It appears they supply two QR springs in the kit for the original Kickr, but you only installed one (on the QR side). Any details on why there are two or why you only need one?
The springs typically push the ends out and away from the drops for vertical install of a wheel. No idea why they'd even include springs to be honest.
Thanks for the quick reply.
I purchased a kickr snap after market. I believe the previous owner had it set up for through axle. He provided me with the quick release skewer, however the clamp piece on the unit itself is still set up for through axle. Any idea where I can purchase the clamp piece that you're removing?
Best contact Wahoo Support
@@gplama Done, awaiting a response. Thank you
I have purchased the wahoo 12x142 thru axle and have installed the bike on the kickr 16 with it in place. First following the paper instructions then the You Tube video. I am confident that the axle has been put together in the correct sequence using the correct parts in the correct place.
I am experiencing some play / wobble / movement on the side where the QR handle is. The part with "142"written on it does not appear to be the correct diameter and is allowing the frame to move. This part is itself moving within the setup. I am concerned that this movement could damage the frame and I suspect is the reason why I am experiencing some indexing issues with the gears.
Do you have any thoughts, heard of this before?
The bike I am using is a Giant with carbon frame which is less than 3 months old and has yet to do 150 miles. Prior to this the rear wheel has not been off and there was no play in the rear wheel.
Wahoo sent me a replacement QR skewer set but it is exactly the same with play.
Grab a phone video of it and send through to Wahoo Support. Mine fits in snug and is secure.
Hey mate I have been through this with wahoo Australia and they have done nothing about it. Problem is the dropout is thinner than the aluminium spacer. I had to installed a washer to shim it out. Otherwise it's just clamping up on itself no matter how tight you do it up. Btw I'm on a tcr disc.

Photos now on Wahoo support FB page.
i have this same issue, i just posed the question to wahoo and will await their response otherwise i wil either get a washer, machine down the spacer or drill the large spacer so the small one can slip inside
Hey Shane! Was this a workaround for getting a TA to work with the original kickr? I.e. the V1?
Are they still available anywhere? I thought the V1 was not TA compatible in any way so this might be a game changer for me!
Yes. I’m not sure these are still available. One for Wahoo support.
@@gplama Yeah, I think these were phased out when I got my OG kickr secondhand a few years ago. Womp. Just had me excited there for a second haha.
@@gplama Just an update. Robert axle project makes them. That's where wahoo support directed me.
I was able to find some of the original wahoo ones at a bike shop though! The RAP ones are way prettier though. Hope that helps someone that still uses one of the OG KICKRs!
You definitely helped me thanks so much for reporting back ! @@ridethecliche247
What about the Focus RAT system with a direct drive trainer?
Contact the trainer company or bike store who stock them.
@@gplama Thanks Shane for the quick reply! Problem is that here in Mali (Africa) there are no dealers (Focus, Wahoo or Tacx) and I am exploring (hopefully well informed) the second hand market for a purchase during my annual leave. Will look further for my specific questions. Thanks for your very informative videos and 'keep it up'! (although you're from 'down-under' 😉...)
shane, i assume you have to change back to original axle that came with your bike to ride on the road again.
Yes
Can we still ride with the Kickr Snap's thru axle on the road? #askingforafriend :)
Man!!! I was getting ready to lose my mind. well--here goes 60 dollars for this adapter kit! hope it works for the Snap Smart 2020?
Word is that it does.
Canyon Bikes says that I am only allowed to use their through axle bikes with direct drive trainers and that I would loose my guarantee on my new carbon bike if I'd use it with my kickr snap.
What do you think about the extra risk of damages caused by using kickr snap instead of kickr core or other direct drive trainers?
I'm yet to see any proof of the Kickr SNAP causing any issues with carbon frames.
@@gplama thank you very much for your response.
Do you have any idea why the snap could cause issues with the frame that a direct drive couldn’t cause?
In my imagination it is the same as in both setups is the axle the fix point.
That'll be one for Canyon to answer (given it's their policy).
@@gplama they say that they have just not tested it but therefore they cannot give permission and that means that I would loose the warranty.
That’s why I am looking for more experienced people than I am to figure out what risk I‘d take with using the snap.
Then it might be one for Wahoo.... But at the end of the day Canyon have to back up their policy. Pressure them to test things. It's lazy of them to have a policy they themselves have never tested.
does it applicable for sram red axs 12 speed for wahoo kicker
I assume so. Wheel-on trainers don't interface with the groupset/cassette like a direct drive does.
is this the Kickr (gen 2) from 2016??
Correct.
New bike day or is that Roubaix a loaner? 👍
+yoog Loaner for this vid.
Shane Miller Maybe I should just pay attention since it's mentioned in first bit of the video.
Seriously, how frequently do you clean your drivetrain, daily or hourly?
Loaner bike.... straight off the shop floor. I'd eat off it! :)
use parafine wax to lube your chain and it will stay like this forever ;P
Although I want one if these kits, 80 euro (over here) is just ridiculous! I'd love to mount my MTB on the KickR Snap but that price is just keeping me from doing it. I'll wait and see if I can order it for 10% of the price on Aliexpres or something in a little while.
Fair enough. The SNAP has had a nice price drop here in AU which offsets the cost a little here.
Shane Miller I love my Snap (and my Elemnt Bolt which I bought yesterday because of your reviews) but 80 euro for an alloy rod with some threads and an adapter knob is a bit steep. I don't understand why I need to buy 3 at once, I only want the one I need. Costs could be lower which probably will result in them selling more!
Thumbs up for mouth cam.
But why doesn’t this come in the box for the price of these trainers?
Because when these trainers were released there wasn’t a lot of they-axle bikes on the market (as compared to today)
Seems so much hassle faffing about with your bike and having to change things to ride outside, I’ll just take my chances cycling out in the cold, might save a few quid too!! 😂
...and miss the experiences of Zwift or The Sufferfest?... I look forward to my winter training! 😃
@@joelterwilliger9901 that comment was a year ago my friend, I actually ended up buying one in the end and a Zwift user, you could say I saw the light!! 😂😂
hahaha £13 on chain reaction
Now, yes.
But awfully expensive.
