Here's a quick FAQ based questions so far... Q: Doesn't all starch change color when iodine is added? A: Yes, though I believe the color change can be different depending on the type/quantity of starch. Something like corn starch will have a more bluish appearance based on what I've read (though I haven't tested it). Maltodextrin is a highly refined starch and it turns dark purple. Q: Can this test tell me HOW MUCH maltodextrin is in a product? A: Not specifically, but relatively. For example, the Crush packet solution I used the iodine turned purple and stayed purple for a couple of hours before I dumped it. The LMNT turned completely clear (not even amber) over the course of an hour or two, even though it started purple. Q: Why did you test a flavored LMNT and not the unflavored? A: I tested the orange flavor of LMNT (and the mango flavor of SaltT) specifically because they contain natural flavors, which is where maltodextrin can be "hidden" based on what the USDA allows in terms of labeling. Q: The color change on the last test seemed different. The iodine immediately (mostly) disappeared. What's up with that? A: The last test was on the natural flavors brand that Keto Chow uses. Keto Chow (and SaltT) use acacia gum as their "flavor carrier" instead of maltodextrin. I need to run a test on an acacia gum solution to see if it displays the same behavior. Q: What's the big deal about half a gram of maltodextrin? A: For most people, nothing. For people with a maltodextrin allergy, it's a very big deal. Imagine if a company included peanuts in a product and didn't disclose it? Also, maltodextrin has a glycemic index of close to double that of table sugar. For diabetics, this is going to be a big deal. Ultimately, it comes down to being transparent in disclosing ingredients so that customers can make an informed decision. Also, I want to mention that I have heard nothing but positive feedback on LMNT's customer service in terms of refunding customers who have issues with their products.
Not diabetic (probably pre-diabetic). Have had noticable reactions from the fruit flavored lmnt packets. Chocolate salt with my coffee seems ok. This info is great. I was thinking I was having a reaction to the stevia. Glad to know its the flavoring.
They put half a gram so they can legally label it sugar free, exactly why tic tac candies don't have sugar listed in the nutritional facts, even tho it's sugar 😂

It's actually very common. They don't make the "natural flavors". They have to get that supplied. When something tastes too good... it must definitely has maltodextrin in it. Suppliers don't want to give their "flavor" ingredients for competitive reasons. What would be more reasonable is for these companies to say we're not doing business with you unless we know exactly what's in your product, or for them to just find an alternative route to flavor their products without "natural flavors". Natural flavors are actually anything but. People with allergies cannot eat anything with natural flavors because of this issue.
Nice! What is maltodextrin? Plants store energy for seeds to use after they are planted and before the plant can start making its own energy through photosynthesis. They combine glucose into long chains called starch. Cornstarch refineries will break that starch back down into smaller molecules using acid or enzymes. The term dextrose equivalent (DE) is used to measure the amount of breakdown of starch. Hydrolyzed starch with the values between one and 20 DE are called by the term maltodextrin. Hydrolyzed starch with the values between 21 and 99 DE are called corn syrup (or tapioca syrup if made from tapioca starch or glucose syrup if not declaring the source of the starch).

Thank you this is what the people on UA-cam pushing LMNT needed to do before they started pushing this on their videos. They are as guilty as everyone else that will say anything for money. Hi
I don't doubt that there are some content creators out there who fear biting the hand that feeds them. I suspect some of them are going to see their reputation take a bit of a hit because of it.
I disagree. Most everyone didn't know how to test for maltodextrin at home until recently. LMNT advertises that they have all the good stuff without any of the junk. Many of the content creators who were sponsored by LMNT trusted the company just like everyone else. So I don't hold the content creators liable for the failures of LMNT unless they continue to advertise for them after this new revelation that their product is junk. Many of the small youtube channels are run by good people. I don't think it's healthy to put a blanket statement that all of them will say anything for money when they themselves are victims of falling for a bad product.
I for one am glad that Keto Chow passed the test! I couldn’t drink the LMNT and had to give it away, now we all know why! I am glad I got the sticker though and put it on my Honda “Element” ! ❤❤❤
Awesome idea!! Thank you for proving that if a company really wanted to make sure they were only using clean ingredients as their tag line states, it'd be very easy to find that out. I have a feeling SALTT is going to have a run on their electrolytes!
Thank you for explaining why we might need to know about maltodextrin (glycemic level compared to sugar, allergies) rather than just saying it's a 'chemical.' Made my day!
@@sharonkrzyzanowski2283 I agree. Not a huge amount but we are all here because we are trying to eat and consume intentionally. Not cool to hide stuff in your products.
Thanks for doing this, Steve. Much appreciated. I chose SaltT over LMNT just because they had better quantities of the minerals. Glad to hear it's a better choice regarding this issue as well.
@ConnieBarajas-cm1bb I wrote them because I feel the company is reputable with their nice salts. The response was sorry you can try the unflavored. I am not diabetic but respond with spikes. Just FYI I tested the perfect keto collagen and it seemed ok
Thanks so much for doing this, Steve. I've been following this issue because I have been a near daily user of LMNT for about the last two and a half years, especially when working out on Keto or during intermittent fasting. I have even used it during extended water fasts to keep up my electrolytes and avoid cramping. I have had excellent results from my two extended water fasts, so I guess it didn't hurt. But, now I am worried that the daily use of LMNT might affect my ability to remain in ketosis. I use both a Freestyle Libre CGM and Keto Mojo test strips (as a backup/calibration to the CGM) and have never seen any movement in my blood glucose level at all after taking LMNT. I do mix it in high dilution -- one pack to 32 ounces of water with lots of ice -- and drink it over an extended time, usually about two or three hours while I work. Over my time using LMNT I have messaged with them, especially when they send me "Freebies" two or three times a year. So, I will be writing to them to express my concerns as an avid user. THANKS!
I have a 20-year history of severe insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Maltodextrin does not affect blood glucose in most people but it may very well be affecting blood insulin, which are two entirely different things. To test for blood glucose use a finger prick and reader, a CGM, or an A1C test. The only way to test insulin is a fasting blood insulin test which most doctors don’t order unless you ask specifically and even then sometimes they will argue against it. My endocrinologist said no but my MD said yes. Fired my Endo and am now off my diabetes meds 13 months following a low carb/keto/ketovore/carnivore way of eating. Been using LMNT daily (2-3 packs) but no more.
@@elizabethpeterson8597 We buy 1-2 lb bags of each electrolyte from Bulk Supplements & make our own. Works out to pennies a day, comparatively. Plus, can flavor it however we want, or just leave plain.
Wow! This is incredibly helpful. I’m going to get some iodine. Wondering about all the seltzers I drink with “natural flavors”. Thanks again for all your help.
When I was using LMNT, I would add my iodine to it. It would turn dark bluish purple, but at that time, I didn’t know it was due to maltodextrin. I am now using Saltt and liking it.
Thanks Steve. We can basically file maltodextrin next to erythritol as bulking agent or flavor carrying ingredient. The resource on the chemical make up of whole foods is good reference, too.
This is the beginning of a game changer. We need to find out more ways that we can self test things because who has access or finance for a laboratory? Maybe MAHA can begin to hold these companies accountable. No more misrepresentations can be tolerated.
This is a fantastic food science experiment! Thanks to you, Steve and Dr. Berg, I now have another tool in my food box. This should be a go to for anyone concerned with this type of maltodextrin if they don't want to ingest it or are allergic to it. Simple test and then one can make up their own mind whether to use a product or not. I will say that I haven't used LMNT for years as I found that they were just too sweet for my taste buds but I am not affected by maltodextrin.
I currently use LMNT Chocolate Salt in my coffee with a splash of half & half but I think I will reach out to SALTT about their coffee options. Thanks for testing Steve!
I'm not a member but I do watch your videos...... God Bless and thank you for your demonstration, that was so good to see. I'm no longer going to buy Lmnt!!!!
Thank you thank you thank you for this! I have a corn allergy and maltodextrin is a corn product....sometimes I know that there is something I'm eating or drinking that is giving me a reaction but I cannot identify it on any labels....This test will help immensely. Again, THANK YOU!
I love your little science experiment, Steve-thank you so much for teaching us how to do this-You’re the best! 😄 And I’ve always trusted Keto Chow all these years….but this just made me appreciate their honesty even more!
Thank You for showing Us how easy this is to test. I am a Diabetic and Maltodextrine sends my blood sugar through the roof. I appreciate this test a lot. 😊❤️👍🏼👋🏼
What an interesting experiment! Thank you for doing this. I went keto in January of 2023 and not long after started to purchase LMNT. It didn't take me long to become what felt like an addicted to their powder packets. I was eager to drink any water unless it had LMNT in it. I am glad that this information came out because I will no longer buy their powder packets. Their sparkling drink in the cans supposedly does not have maltodextrin. Thank you for doing this video; I am a visual learner and this drove home that I need to avoid maltodextrin.
Thanks for such an informative demonstration. I tried using LMNT when I received their free sample pack. I didn't like it so I gave the rest to a family member. Now, I'm glad I never used it regularly.
Thank you SO much for this video! Recently purchased a different brand from Amazon to replace the LMNT. Went & checked-sure enough, they ALSO have Maltodextrin!
I'm shocked that LMNT didn't know and natural flavors may not be safe from a glucose aspect. I'm so glad you showed how to test for Maltodextrin. Thanks Steve for this very important test. Too bad we have to spend money on the product to test and see if it is truly free of Maltodextrin . I hope you'll include a maltodextrin test on the products you review in the future.
Thanks Steve for calling this company out. I used to drink that brand until keto chow came out with SALTT and have been drinking the ketochow brand for awhile now. When I think about it, maybe that's why I had elevated glucose levels (T2) when I drank the other brand. Thank you ketochow for keeping it clean!
I love Dr Berg!! This was an awesome demonstration and quite helpful. I don't remember watching that particular video of Dr Berg's, he has thousands after all, but he is the one I watch for all of my keto questions. Thank you Steve!!!
I’ve been appalled at the number of commercially available products out there that are marketed as “sugar free” or Keto Friendly, but they all have maltodextrin in the ingredients list. I’m a hardcore label reader these days. I’m trying to be more careful about what I purchase, but I was unaware of this “natural flavors” loophole. Truth be told, I’m not exactly shocked I knew a similar loophole existed for terms like “fragrance” and “parfum” which allows for parabens to be added to scented toiletries. I should have realized this included flavoring as well. All the Keto Channels that were sponsored by LMNT probably feel taken advantage of. I only see them advertised on the ones I follow, but I saw a video by Dr. Boz about LMNT and this maltodextrin fiasco. It’s crazy. Thanks for the iodine tip, Steve! I’ll be putting this to use.
Excellent! I'm not sensitive , but you never know when someone you know might be and this is a handy way to find out and avoid undue stress ( not to mention visits to the ER!) Thanks for doing this.. another good tip to have in the arsenal! Thanks for positing and see you next time
I have been trying to get answers from LMNT about their salt sources. Now this is another reason to switch to a more transparent brand. I’ve been a loyal customer of them for 3 years, so it’s a bummer. They seem like really nice people but ingredients matter and not knowing what’s really inside what you sell that is consumed by a lot of people is a big red flag to me. Thank you for this experiment! I might recreate it for my homeschooled teens. 😊
FANTASTIC VIDEO I have already contacted LMNT when this was revealed because I get a reaction to maltidex....and because it said NO it did not contained I have been a subscriber for more than a year but always seem to have a bit of gut issues....NOW I KNOW I cancelled my subscription and they refunded me from the last delivery....I am going to try SALTT I have not tried keto chow ....Thank you steve now I know how to test such great info!...Julianna NC
Very interesting! If you like doing these kind of videos I would love to see more of the science of foods! I recently found the book Salt Fat Acid Heat by Samin Nosrat. I read the sample on Kindle and knew it was my type of book so I bought the hardback. It has already changed my cooking techniques. I loved America’s Test Kitchen because they explained a lot of science of why food reacts the way it does when cooking but then in later years they stopped:(

Thanks, Steve and Dr. Berg for such a simple test. My own experience has been that some prepared food or supplement items do not clearly account for all sugars in the product. A blood glucose test always tells the truth for me. Appreciate you sharing such important information 😊

Here's a quick FAQ based questions so far...
Q: Doesn't all starch change color when iodine is added?

Q: The color change on the last test seemed different. The iodine immediately (mostly) disappeared. What's up with that?

I for one am glad that Keto Chow passed the test! I couldn’t drink the LMNT and had to give it away, now we all know why! I am glad I got the sticker though and put it on my Honda “Element” ! ❤❤❤
@@Pambo101 the Raw Unflavored isn't supposed to contain ANY maltodextrin, since the maltodextrin is in the flavors.
@@w1975b sorry I like the flavors, and I’m pretty sure “zesty orange and mondo melon” will be in my orders for quite a while….
@@Pambo101 I'm confused. You said you had to give away the LMNT, so what exactly are you consuming that is zesty orange and mondo melon flavored?
Awesome idea!! Thank you for proving that if a company really wanted to make sure they were only using clean ingredients as their tag line states, it'd be very easy to find that out. I have a feeling SALTT is going to have a run on their electrolytes!
@@Kay-325 unfortunately the SALTT tastes like crap in comparison (IMO). I thought it might be a more affordable swap but not even close.
@@Kay-325 I use their coco loco & caramel ones with warm water, butter in the ninja & it tastes like a delicious hot cocoa! It's really yummy! 😋
Thank you for explaining why we might need to know about maltodextrin (glycemic level compared to sugar, allergies) rather than just saying it's a 'chemical.' Made my day!
Thanks Steve. The public needs to certainly be aware of this. Then make the choice of whether they are going to consume.
Heck yeah. I’ve needed this for months. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much. It helps consumers. Please keep doing podcast like this.
I feel a little betrayed by LMNT. I love it and I recommend it to my patients. I won't be any longer though....
@@sharonkrzyzanowski2283 I agree. Not a huge amount but we are all here because we are trying to eat and consume intentionally. Not cool to hide stuff in your products.
Same. I’ve got a whole useless case of LMNT
Thanks for doing this, Steve. Much appreciated. I chose SaltT over LMNT just because they had better quantities of the minerals. Glad to hear it's a better choice regarding this issue as well.
I just tested my Re-Lyte and it also tested positive for Maltodextrin! I'm so peeved!
@@Carol32547 was it flavored or unflavored?
@SeriousKeto yes. It was the watermelon flavor.
Thanks for sharing that info.
OMG😮i use Re-Lyte and I am a Diabetic!! SHAME!
@ConnieBarajas-cm1bb I wrote them because I feel the company is reputable with their nice salts. The response was sorry you can try the unflavored. I am not diabetic but respond with spikes. Just FYI I tested the perfect keto collagen and it seemed ok
Thank you for this. My husband and I stay away from anything with Maltodextrin in it, but now we'll know for sure.
What a great PSA Steve!
I frankly had completely forgotten that I had seen Dr Berg’s video about this way back
Good call!
Wow! This is incredibly helpful. I’m going to get some iodine. Wondering about all the seltzers I drink with “natural flavors”. Thanks again for all your help.
Informative as always. Thank you!
When I was using LMNT, I would add my iodine to it. It would turn dark bluish purple, but at that time, I didn’t know it was due to maltodextrin. I am now using Saltt and liking it.
Trust that's what bothered us!! Now researching for an alternative product.
Thanks Steve. We can basically file maltodextrin next to erythritol as bulking agent or flavor carrying ingredient. The resource on the chemical make up of whole foods is good reference, too.
Erithatol isn't as bad as maltodextrine, it doesn't cause blood sugar spikes.
This is the beginning of a game changer. We need to find out more ways that we can self test things because who has access or finance for a laboratory? Maybe MAHA can begin to hold these companies accountable. No more misrepresentations can be tolerated.
I mean, I can get at home tests for Covid, colon cancer, drug use, DNA, etc. So I agree, a home test for various allergens would be pretty cool.
@SeriousKeto
TOTALLY! SO TRUE. THANKS SO MUCH for this! I appreciate ALL YOU DO for us here on UA-cam.
Just to be on the safe side. I've always used the unflavored one. Thanks for doing the rest👍🏾
Wonderful. I have Saltt. Great that it is clear of MD. Good work Dr Berg and Dr Berry. Thank you for the info.
Steve great video. It was very interesting. Thank you for sharing this.
Wow Steve, thank you. Very cool test. I am going to need to buy another bottle of iodine so I can test some things in my kitchen.
I just used the little bottle of iodine tincture from Walgreens. I think it was around $10.
Love this! CSI Wisconsin. Did you use Lugols iodine?
Update: I used Lugols and tested my Allulose and Monkfruit blend and it's CLEAN! So I drank it. 😊
I used the Walgreen's brand
@@SeriousKetoLike from the first aid area?
Will it work to use Lugol's that is for consumption?
Thank you SO much for this video! Recently purchased a different brand from Amazon to replace the LMNT. Went & checked-sure enough, they ALSO have Maltodextrin!
Very interesting information! Thank you.
Thank you. I will use this information. It's sad we can't trust what's on our labels.
Bbbbuttt, It's Natural!!
Thank you so much for this! I missed Dr Berg's experiment. I like SALTT, LMNT is too salty tasting to me, so was already using the better choice.
Wow! You may have just pushed LMNT to change their supplier 👊🏻
I need to go buy some Iodine!
Excellent! I'm not sensitive , but you never know when someone you know might be and this is a handy way to find out and avoid undue stress ( not to mention visits to the ER!)
Thanks for doing this.. another good tip to have in the arsenal!
Thanks for positing and see you next time
A huge thank you to you & Dr.Eric Berg for this incredibly valuable health information.
great video Steve, thanks for sharing.
Great information! Thank you!
I loved America’s Test Kitchen because they explained a lot of science of why food reacts the way it does when cooking but then in later years they stopped:(
I think the food science was more Chris Kimball's thing. If you want to see some great ATK science-y stuff, check out any of the ATK UA-cam videos by Lan Lam. Great stuff.
@ Thank you! I will check them out.
@@SeriousKeto TY Steve. Great tip. On my way too! 😍
Wow Steve! Thank you so much for doing this! I had know idea it was that easy to test for maltodextrin. Fantastic video!
This is a great video. At least we can test ourselves and not have to trust manufacturers.
Great demo! VERY enlightening, Steve.
Thank you for this! It was very helpful!
Thanks, Steve and Dr. Berg for such a simple test. My own experience has been that some prepared food or supplement items do not clearly account for all sugars in the product. A blood glucose test always tells the truth for me.
Appreciate you sharing such important information 😊
Thanks!!
Fantastic video Steve! Dr. Berg was one of my early keto influences (along with Drs. Boz and Berry). Thanks for reminding us to be vigilant when it comes to ingredients - for me, one of the key differences between keto and low carb!! 👍
😮You are a super hero!!!... You needed a cape in this video 😂🎉
Love your work, I’m heartbroken as a diabetic I really trusted them but always wondered because I did notice certain feelings that would come on after drinking LMNT, like bloating and craving sugar, 😢
😮 excellent!
THANKS SO MUCH for this & for the Q & A you've included here. I appreciate ALL YOU DO for us here on UA-cam. I've learned so much from you through the years & all your content!
Great video Steve! I learn something new everyday.😀
Cudos for this most excellent video & info. Boo hoo....i loved my morning chocolate LMNT coffee. Back to SaltT for me.
@@prettybirdbeenlpeacock6592 i know! I felt that the chocolate flavor in my coffee was my one guilt free pleasure in my restrictive life. Haven’t had for 2 weeks now and my mornings are a little less fun.
The reason I have always( since 1983 ) read labels if they won't be honest I won't purchase anything, as long as they are GMO it is so easy to hide behind "my supplier"
WOW, this is super informative. Thanks for doing this, Steve.
The iodine test merely tests for the presence of starch, ANY starch
Yes, that’s what he said in the video.
correct! and maltodextrin is a polysaccharide / starch
Thanks Steve. Your attention to detail is fabulous and LMNT’s claim that they “ didn’t know” looks ridiculous now. I’m happy to be armed with the choice of whether or not to consume a carbohydrate sugar made from corn - since we were mindlessly told there were no suspect ingredients in LMNT!!
My relationship is over with LMNT. Thank you for this. Your the man!!
Great video! You always have the most informative videos, and it has helped me along my way journey my mostly keto life.
Thank you Steve. We love all your "tests"! I'm so glad you test the products we use.
Wow, great video. Thanks for testing it out so quickly. I kept hearing news about LMNT, but there was no physical evidence. This one hit the spot.
Steve, thank you for passing this on. All my best to you and your family.
Thank you thank you. I am definitely going to start order from keto chow. With my sensitivity to maltodextrine and how hard I have hunted for products without it, this is a tremendous blessing. ❤
And Happy Halloween 🎃
I used to think it turned purple because of the potassium & magnesium not the malrodextrin … thank you for the information. Love&Light from California 🤍🤍
