Much thanks to Gary Taubes and all the people who have the courage to speak against convention. I have been preaching keto, carnivore to my friends since I undertook this healthspan journey about four months ago with amazing results. 50yrs young, 155lbs, 12% bodyfat and feel like 20 again. 80% of my friends call me nuts for recommending healthy fats.....now, I've lost 80% of my fat/unhealthy friends. Wish them the best.

I’ve noticed that this is becoming like a religion. It’s amazing at the hostile reaction I get when I tell people about it- most say are you crazy and geybwuite aggressive - it’s 40 years of conditioning after all and people refuse to entertain it. What I so agree with it’s just not sustainable to do the level of excercise needed- I use to run 16 km a week but tore my meniscus so can’t run now. Most people I know who run have joint issues - so it’s so refreshing just to eat a plate of meat get full and do a normal level of excercise and still loose weight!!
But don’t tell anyone you’re doing it as you’ll just start to second guess yourself.
People are blindly eating themselves to a future of degenerative diseases which is sad but if governments too nutritional scientists and doctors say this is dangerous and a fad ( and this is the official line ) what can you do
It’s the biggest scandal of the last 50 years and people are dying

In this presentation made in South Africa, Taubes shoots down the 'energy balance hypothesis' (calories in > calories out = path to obesity) and puts out there the alternative notion that ' the solution to obesity is not getting people to eat less and move more (the 'energy balance hypothesis'), but rather the solution is 'restricting the causative agent - refined grains and sugars' (carbs).
Put another way, restricting calories isn't the solution, restricting calories from carbs is.
Put yet another way, the solution is to burn fat, not sugar, to eat fat, not sugar.
Put yet another way, in consumption of food, strive for nutrient density.

Further, insulin resistance is the natural response to chronic high insulin in the blood. Without insulin resistance blood sugar would drop to zero as insulin levels increased. High insulin levels are driven by high carb diets and grazing type eating, both of which are promoted by government and large health organizations, and things such as stress and liver overproduction of glucose.

This is fantastic! Now that the success of the ketogenic diet has proven that animal fat doesn't make us fat, we need to move on to address the real causes of obesity and health problem. The combination of modern, unstable vegetable oils, sugar, and chemical exposure is probably needed for really overweight people, but sugar is a big factor. Yet, the same kind of vaguely scientific studies that brought us the cholesterol hypothesis are now pushing us toward a meat tax. The health benefits of meat in a diet are enormous, and the epidemiological studies that "prove" that meat somehow causes colon cancer (when, in fact, it prevents it) are well-documented as useless, so that would be a big step backwards. However, the junk food, alcohol, and nut industries also create loads of greenhouse gas emissions as well as killing wildlife, causing floods, and destroying our soil, with their intensive use of pesticides and fertilizers, processing, transportation, and chemicals. So, if anyone is serious about saving the planet, and our health, their focus should be squarely on General Mills, Kellogg's, the alcohol industry, Cargill's vegetable oil industry, and the California nut industry, that has contributed greatly to the killing off of our honey bees, while giving us a food that we cannot digest. Putting a tax on these destructive industries would go a long way to a healthier planet, and healthier Americans.

READ THIS ABOUT WHY TOO MUCH EXERCISE IS BAD FOR BOOK-READING: Gary Taubes is right about the excess of exercise. I am a philosopher and i have read all the books of Aristotle. Aristotle said that the work of the body is an impediment for the work of the mind and the work of the mind is an impediment for the work of the body. That's why the majority of people who exercise too much are dumb, an excess of exercise is an impediment for book-reading. I exercise and i personally have noticed by personal experience that on the days i exercise a lot like 2 hours of fast-walking i am not able to concentrate on my book-reading

      @@suemorgan5943 ,
Looks like I triggered a couple of medically trained people. Sorry about that. Doesn't change my opinion, which is not without basis. Both of you seem to demand, or want, respect simply because you have medical training. Here's my observation, as an outsider...
It appears medical school is like a guild, a club, where they make you jump through a lot of hoops. You are overwhelmed learning vast quantities of information. This is tough and not everyone can do it. The problem is, you never get a chance to analyze and think about things. You must take what you are told at face value and certainly never question anything or investigate whether what you are being taught is actually supported by science. Furthermore, you become programed or conditioned into a certain way of thinking. And, just like the institution that conditioned you, it seems you want respect as well.
So, to me, medical training is not a qualification for understanding the human body from an evolutionary basis with the acceptance that humans are a bipedal ape and follow the same biological rules as all animals with species-specific requisites.
I suggest you look up Ken Berry as an example of someone with medical training who doesn't take himself too seriously. And, he is also good at explaining why doctors behave the way they do.
Incidentally, as far as qualifications, I do consider myself to have some. I've practiced biohacking for most of my adult life. In the last five years I've discovered what actually works for promoting optimal health. It is exactly the opposite of what the medical establishment tries to tell everyone. I've learned the importance of nutrient density and infrequent eating, as well as the benefits of fasting and subsequent autophagy. I've learned to opmtimize my mitochondria through high-intensity interval training. And of course, I'm aware of the importance of maintaining muscle strength for longevity and healthy aging.
      It is very empowering.

There can also be an epigenetic response, and a genetic predisposition to use or not use certain food efficiently. The lecture moving into the carb issue doesn’t explain animals who stay fat on small amounts of food. Seems like the body needs time to balance hormones by times of fasting as lots of unnatural sugar create imbalance. He mentioned zero about mineral deficiencies from trace mineral uptake. A mineral rich, lower sugar, less meat and more raw vegetable diet with intermittent fasting.

Data in a statistical report conducted by professional or scientists is next to impossible to argue with, because of that it become a tool for lobbyist, either with a hidden agenda or not. Wow. This was really hard to watch, because this guy doesn’t know how to make an argument. He ends up in an interesting place worth exploring, but the ride there is a cognitive disaster. It is basic physics to say that if a body gains mass, that mass has to have come from somewhere. He argues against energy balance for half the lecture, and then agrees with it with the caveat that the ‘causality’ is important. No. Fundamentally, more calories in than out = more mass, period. Every athlete knows this. WHY a person over eats does not change the fact that over eating will make that person gain weight. We must make a distinction between people who actually have a better theory than the current one, and those who argue against the current one because they don’t understand it. This guy is the latter.
I have a personal anecdote to share.
About two years ago I quit smoking. I had been smoking for about twenty years. I weighed 160-165 lbs steadily the whole time. After quitting, I started gaining weight. I was eating everything in sight. I was constantly hungry. It is well known that smoking curbs the appetite. Well, like clockwork, I was up to 175 within a couple of months. Some was muscle, because I work out a lot, and I gained some fat. About four months ago, I was up to 196, and had gained more fat than I was comfortable with. At the time, I had a habit of eating a half pint of ice cream almost every night after dinner. That is about 600 calories~ not just sugar, but fat and protein as well. Three months ago I stopped eating the ice cream and kept everything else the same. I lost about 15 pounds so far. 3 months x 30 = 90 days. 90 x 600 = 54000 ice cream calories. 54000\3500 calories per pound of fat = 15.42 pounds of weight lost. Now I am stable at 181-183. Pretty simple.

Amazing that he continues to spout this nonsense. His own NuSi study showed his theory is wrong. It turned out that a calorie is in fact a calorie. Of course he tried to suppress those finding and the head researcher resigned as a result. And his major funding source refused to hand him any more money because of his attempted suppression. The result was NuSi end up with four people instead of dozens.
