Dr Eric Westman has been working on the front lines of obesity and internal medicine for 2 decades, he's written multiple books and has almost 200,000 youtube subscribers who he regularly updates on all things metabolism so I was very pleased to have him as a guest.
We talk about how to shift that stubborn belly fat that is so troublesome to so many.
Dr Westman tells us if its possible to reverse pre-diabetes or even type 2 diabetes.
We hear about the relationship between insulin resistance and diabetes.
We talk about saturated fat in our diets, keto, high protein, low carb and the associated health benefits.
This a highly informative conversation especially if you're looking for concrete advice on weightloss and healthy eating.

Low carb does not mean low calorie. I eat around 4000 calories a day. Lose 2 pounds on average. Low carb is just low carb. That's what matters. Calories really don't matter. If they did, hot water would weigh more than cold.

Fresh milled grain has 40 of 44 essential vitamins and minerals needed to sustain life. So bread made with freshly milled flour plus only healthy ingredients such as olive oil, salt, maybe eggs is good for you and also full of fiber which prevents the blood sugar spikes and keeps you full-unlike all nutrition deficient commercial products. If you delve into the fresh milled groups you will find even type 2 diabetics can eat it, some brain/behavior issues can improve, the high source of vitamin E can cause warts which are virus caused to resolve and a host of other benefits all because of nutrients. Of course very few are going to buy the equipment and take the time to mill flour and bake so the alternative is to abstain. I think what follorurhewtt was saying is bread has become the villain because of the commercial adulterations. Read the labels to see.

@@happyhabitpodcast in the video it says that we are mostly water and protien , this should guide us on what to eat. It implies go heavy on protein. Its ambiguos. It almost suggests a gallon of water with a steak is a balanced!
And on the right track. Plus im aware an elephant is a different species, but it to is water and protien and yet does not prioritise protein by eating low protein bush.. and im also aware that we have evolved eating meat, but we need balance of all food groups to be in good health , some are highh some are low in protein. If we are made up of 75% water
That suggests the bulk of what we take in and need can be gotten from water.

    To loose weight (my recipe)
1/ Stop carbs/sugar or have a minimum of carbs / sugar, stop eating processed foods
2/ Eat meat, eggs, chicken, fish, low carb vegetables
    3/ Exercise, walking helps
4/ Drink water, no sugar drinks
    This is working for me.
This does require some discipline but results are close to immediate and therefore this method is very motivating.
This goal is to avoid having high blood sugar which spikes insulin. High insulin leads to weight gain or makes weight loss very difficult.

I'm mostly animal based foods for the last two years. I lost 70lb in five months and back to my figure from 30yrs ago. He's right in that you lose that need to be eating all the time. I dont track macros and I don't calorie count. I have days where I don't eat much at all because I'm just not hungry, then I follow with days of eating a LOT. Every 6mths or so I do a planned two or three day fast for cell repair. He's also correct that you dont need expensive coaching or subscriptions. I bought a cheap BGM off Amazon and downloaded a free app to track long term. I never reached pre diabetic stage per hba1c but I most definitely had an insulin issue. Eff the food industry lies!

Yes I’m a lady of a certain age, but I’ve been getting cleaner and cleaner in my diet because of this - and I already was pretty clean, (that’s the only way to keep the 40 pounds off in the first place… ) But now it’s not helping. And I’m exercising a little bit more too. I’m kind of wondering if Claritin could be causing it because I just heard that antihistamines can cause weight gain? Is this a real thing?

I had the best results doing OMAD, certainly was not Plant based.
Not doing OMAD atm, as I am in maintenance mode.
    When I did OMAD ( just one way of eating - not a diet ) I lost 18 kgs / 39 lbs.
When tracked which was rare - my intake comprised of 60% fat and 20% each from carbs and Protein.
Protein came to about half of what is currently recommend, again not ideal but it worked our for me.
Did I worry about creating or wanting to know my kcal requirements...NO.
I simply ate so I could sustain 23 hours of no kcal intake.
The what to eat is a trial and error journey - your trial and error journey, not what others say or what is said or written down.
No cravings - no feeling of being hungry or angry.
No feelings of being high or low compared to when I was eating multiple times per day and eating loads of carbs, in all forms that it comes in.
No need for any injections or any medical visitations or interventions.
When it came to protein - I always made sure it was complete.
So if I did eat rice it was with beans - but that was rare.
It usually takes 5 hours for the stomach to fully empty, so I try not intake any kcal 5 hours before bedtime.
That is when I would start my FASTING clock, i.e. 5 hours after my last intake.

All calories are not equal, in addition the metabolism can adjust to a low calorie diet which is why people plateau after being on a low calorie diet for a period of time. The difference between the ketogenic diet and low calorie approach is keto forces the body to burn fat instead of glucose for fuel. In fact keto is itself a version of a lower calorie diet but it drastically reduces carb intake and promotes the production of ketones.
Low calorie diets that still allow majority carb consumption perpetuates the glucose/ insulin spike cycle and resultant inflammation. Remember ,keto isn't purely a weightloss diet, its a diet that addresses metabolic dysfunction such as high blood pressure, insulin resistance etc

The idea is fewer carbs ,not complete elimination of carbs. Thanks for watching.

Wow, I'm the opposite. As soon as I eat carbs I want to eat all the time.

    A few questions...
I really don't think avoiding fruit completely is smart. It's filled with vital nutrients/antioxidants/fiber etc. .... If you are a healthy person, eat fruit... If you need to avoid it for metabolic reasons, do so only temp. Imo -- but I'm no one.
    - my children DO eat maybe too much fruit though - as vegetarians their diet is predominantly fruit and veggies -- with some gluten free grains and tofu. We recently gave up dairy completely as that actually makes no sense to ingest.
... But with them having a high fruit diet... It means high carbs. (Not bad sugar) But sugar regardless... Am I causing them damage? Am I setting them up for a bad future ?
-how can one do a low carb diet as a vegetarian or vegan (no dairy) ??.. is it even possible without becoming nutritionally deficient... Or becoming too low calorie ?
    - also there is a lot of research out there suggesting that keto cannot be done the same way for women as it is for men.. everything it seems is based off of a males physiology... But apparently going too low in carb can be detrimental to a woman's fertility and hormones etc... what are your thoughts on that ?

Stop with the vegan veg diet especially for your kids. Do your research on vegan adults who converted to keto/carnivore and see how much their health improved. Im sad for your kids. By the way, why does dairy make no sense but tofu does ?

I'm agree with the other commenter: vegan is terrible for children. Do a search on UA-cam re: vegans who went back to omnivorous diets because of health problems.

Multivitamin and minerals suitable for vegans, or add low fat cheese and milk. Moderate resistance training and cardio/walking and monitoring calories if you feel like you're getting fat. Pure and simple.

I half heartedly tried Keto. One of my biggest frustrations is not being able to lose my belly fat. It has been so frustrating. I’m going to try again. How low carb should I I go?

20 grams of carbs or less to do keto properly. You can do lots of vegetables and some protein and some fat. Just no fruit, sugar, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes or anything that is starchy. You can also do keto by doing a carnivore diet which is protein and high fat. Both of these ways of eating are cutting out carbs and will put you into ketosis.

Where are the studies that support this? Didn't the meta studies debunk keto for fat loss? Why should we believe you?

You don't have to believe anything you see on UA-cam, its prudent to inform yourself certainly, but seeking medical expertise is always preferable regardless.
