You’ve put a LOT of work into this piece, and it definitely shows in the final results. The dark stain makes it look so rich, and the wood you have revealed is beautiful. The new hardware and the gilding wax on the casters is a great final touch. I absolutely LOVE that you kept the tag!
When I saw this piece, I thought 1920. My grandfather bought a princess vanity in birdseye maple with a lovely oval mirror with beveled glass and elegant tall swan neck supports. It was a wedding present to my grandmother here in Vancouver. It was a treasured piece which had been refinished once nearly 60 years ago. It has aged to a golden tone and has pride of place in my living room. It needs a couple of very minor repairs, including one of the wooden casters. I would have protected the label inside an archival pouch(acid free) and put it back inside the drawer away from light to preserve it. You have reminded me to empty out the drawers and get busy with the Howard's as it is long overdue. Your project makes me very happy to see one of these pieces saved and brought back. ❤
Very cool! Funny this piece is Vancouver as well as yours. Your vanity sounds like a very nice piece of furniture. Thanks for watching and glad you liked the results :)
@FurnitureFlippa I took one look at it and then you identified it from the label and catalogue listing which I have never seen. Great catch on your part!
Me too! My Grandmother had it in the girls bedroom in Wisconsin. I inherited it in high school when she moved to an apartment, used it for my daughter, and it is now in the spare bedroom. I really need to take care of the drawers too. Especially since Grandma lined them with contact paper.😮. Not looking forward to that task.
@@kailee5694 Awesome! For the contact paper I think a heat gun or even a hair dryer could help get it removed. I guess depends on the condition of the paper, could be easy, could be a mess!
It turned out beautiful. I think my favorite part might actually be the interior transformation. Lots of extra work to clean those drawers up and I love to see it. Well done!
Thanks Phoebe 🙂 the insides were tough too, the paint was sticky and I had to go buy better stripping gloves (they were thicker and specifically for stripping) cause I could actually feel it burning my hands a bit through my regular gloves… no clue what it was!
Sah-weeet job on this one, Jamie! 👍 Crazy how much paint you can slap on a piece of furniture before someone decides that it's time to give it back the look it deserves! Lovely, thanks!!!
Ok now that I’ve seen the whole video I must say Jamie you sure have come a long way in your finish work/detail. 👍🏼I had this same dresser but it had 3 long or wide drawers and 2 top small drawers. And I used the same dark Kona stain. It was my son’s great grandmothers. I loved you pulls you chose. It suited it more like what would’ve been on it long ago. Thank you for all that is involved with filming and editing to put this great content out for us, it’s greatly appreciated ❤️🇺🇸
Thank you for showing the back. I’m on of those people who want the back refreshed. I also like the inside refreshed as well. The dovetail joints are also nice!!
I usually do them before selling, just not always when the video is done. But people enjoy the full process so I can add it all 👍 thanks so much for watching!
Love this old piece--I know it was a lot of work, but it showed people new to this so many tricks of the trade and what to expect. Glad you did the back, it looks more professional when all the surfaces are cleaned up. It is so beautiful now! I also left gouges, etc. untouched on my husband's great grandmother's buffet. And laminating the label was genius--I am amazed it survived!
Amazing result. Staying true to the piece is best practice. One of the very best DIY tutorial vids I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a lot of furniture restoration vids🧐
I loved the restoration. I really , really like sanding. I find it therapeutic, but I think even for me, it seemed a lot . You are one of my favourite furniture flippers. I always enjoy your videos. Good job. Keep them coming.
I've loved watching this beauty come back to life, I get painting furniture because I have done it myself but jeez at least show the pieces you paint some love has your doing them. You really worked hard with this & you can definitely see all the little details now popping to life again. Great work sir 🫶🇬🇧
Very nice! I love that you did leave some of the old flaws. It makes it look authentic to me. Nothing gets out of life without a few scars. She looks lovely now.
A joy to see the transformation, and the wave-effect of the drawers is a delight to the eyes...thank you for regaining the integrity of the original...dgp/uk
Back in the day, barns were painted with iron oxide and boiled tung oil. Many things were hard to find after WWI and worse during WWII. Living quite rural, we made do with what we had. Granpa took old furniture, cleaned it with lye soap, made a watered down version of 'barn paint' to use on the furniture. It was tgen covered with a dark stain, and coated with shellack. In the end, it was sturdy, matched everything else, and the cost was within budget. He would do anything to keep Granny happy. Your dresser looks amazing.
This piece looks fabulous, and I would never have guessed it had ever had all those layers of paint. Oh, to be young, fit, and enthusiastic. I really commend your perseverance and overall work ethic. Excellent job.
Really beautiful restoration! That thing was a complete mess, and you did a great job on it! I love the new drawer pulls and the choice of stain color. Awesome!
I’m only half way through this video and I’m amazed your sticking at it, I’d have quit a long time ago! 😂 there’s sooo much paint! 😆 Fair play to you for sticking at it. 👏🏻🙌🏻🏆
Perfect editing with detailed explanations. I can only imagine how many hours this took you. I was mesmerized by your process. Like a car wreck, I couldn't look away... LOL. Great job on a difficult piece. :)
Beautiful piece! You did a great job. I was impressed by how you stained the dovetail joints. I also really liked the gilding wax on the casters. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that. Finally the Howard did a nice job in the drawers. 👍
Wow!! I don't think I've ever seen a video with more paint removing and sanding! That took a lot of time and effort. The final result is stunning! What a difference a few dozen hours of hard work can make. LOL! Seriously, I think you did a phenomenal job on this piece. I hope it sells for BIG bucks! See you on the next one!
She's beautiful again! I love painted furniture but it would be hard to paint a true antique (over 100 years old). This beauty just got a refresh and she looks as beautiful as they say she was first sold in the early 1900's. Beautiful! Good job-new subscriber.
Great work. Love the new drawer pulls. Just a question: could that dark piece of wood on the front of the top have been bleached so it would blend in better with the rest of the top?
The red and white underpaint were probably originally a faux wood painted finish. Those are notoriously hard to get off and I admire your perseverance! Lovely result in the end!
I have a piece a lot like this that I refinished the same way. With all my work and how beautiful it turned out, I had to keep it. Lots of work on your piece, but the result was amazing. Linda Beals.
Have you considered applying Howard's to the wooden casters, it's all in the details. I love the stain choice this is a beautiful piece now. Great job !
Great job! The only suggestion I have is that an application of dark brown toner to the light wood would help to even out the colours of the mahogany top.
