Younger people really don't understand how HUGE this was. When she came out, people went nuts. Millions of teen girls dressed like her. My best friend wore a million rubber bracelets. Everyone copied her. She instigated a complete cultural shift for women. No one today rivals the effect she had. She didn't need an expensive or "weird" video like the others, her songs stood on their own. And all w/o social media!
+pup lover I got this tape in early 1984, but I didn't notice people copying her outfits until after "Like a Virgin." Before that she just wore various things like in this video and the "Burning Up" video.
Madonna's street urchin persona is the one that will remain with us even after she's gone -totally her own, not cribbed from high fashion or classic Hollywood style. She's given us a thousand different looks, but there's something natural and effortless about early Madonna.
@@VidaBlue317 I don't think the lack of money ever impeded her ability to manipulate image or play the long game. But in the early days she made music for the audience she was part of. There was something more appealing about that.
HOW am I only just discovering this song, at the age of 40. Released the year before I was born. This song does what you just don't see any more: delivers a catchy, superficially upbeat pop song, with the engine of a brilliant chord sequence and message under the hood. Absolute perfection, and Madonna was the only person who could've sung it quite right.
The stuff in the charts today I had a look at and they have no soul or melody. The people who are behind the music industry and the few who actually make the garbage today should be ousted. So many independent artists go unnoticed because of this. It needs a shake up and going back to the people voting on what is good, not getting what you are given instead.
A classic for those of us who grew up in the 80s, a upbeat song that makes me feel sad for a time passed, not appreciated at the time and never to be repeated.
Sean I couldn't have said it better myself. Makes you feel upbeat and sad at the same time brings back memories but yet we can't go back to a great time that was the 80s
NOTHING will ever match the 80's. The POSITIVITY in the culture was so addicting. People were focused on FUN, as opposed to FIGHTING on Twitter LOL. The Movies, the TV, the Music, the People, it was so special and I fear no other timeframe will ever compare.
I’m 50 this year and this woman was a total inspiration in my life, I even dressed like her. Hearing this today made me look this video up this evening and took me right back to being 14/15 years old again. Legend 😍

@@daniellakaran5760 hi, it's 10:04 am in PR. Where are you from ? Have a good night. Ready for the day, house cleaning and I will be listening to Madonna's CD with all the best songs.
I was only 2 or 3 when Borderline came out. I remember wanting to be like Madonna when I was really little. Taylor Swift has nothing on the real Queen of Pop. Things have been quite difficult for me during the last few years. I had to move back in with my parents, who do not understand me or my situation. I am in the process of a career change from healthcare to cybersecurity. Hearing this song from my early childhood, gives me some of the support that I am lacking from those around me. Thank you Madonna.
Madonna was absolutely a trendsetter in the 1980s. I remember in 1983 when I first saw her on American Bandstand that was on every Saturday morning. I said she’s going to be big and she won’t be a fad like a lot of pop stars have been. She’s a true artist and very smart business woman.
One of the Madonna's best songs that coloured my childhood... How fast the time goes by... I will always adore this song once for all.. Thanks Madonna, you're truly the definition of true DIVA ... 👍🎶👌
If the 80s had UA-cam, this song, along with Like a Virgin, would be over a billion views within the first year or two, that's how popular it was. Kids today really have no sense of how big she was, kind of like the Beatles ... even though kids today have heard of them, they really just have no idea of their impact and how wildly popular they were.
This song brings me back to my childhood. My life was MJ Janet Prince Madonna Cyndi and all the other 80’s icons. Life was so simple and my parents were young 🙏🏾❤️
the days as you say " life was so simple and my parents too were young.." hearing this song again, , I last heard it was 15 or so year ago , I can't help but feel melancholy. I dont think that there will ever again be a period in time, musically, as it was in the 80's . The diversity of the amount of talent , it was astonishing ! Individuality , unique eclectic styles and genre of music . 1982 I was 17 ,1992 at 27yr I saw Madonna live for the 1st time , the Girlie Show , in Tel Aviev.
I forgot how pretty Madonna was when she was young, I’m so glad I was part of this generation and would like to say thanks to Madonna for all the years of great music, She’ll always be an icon!, Much love from Canada 🇨🇦😎
Hey at least we've turnout out alright after all. ;) When looking back at the clothing style of the 80's, it makes me chuckle a bit, since I wore the same stuff. xD
Definitely in my Top Ten Madonna songs of all time. It was on NON-STOP on MTV when I was a kid. Perfect mix of sassy, sexy, and sweet. And Madonna never looked more devastatingly gorgeous than she did in this video - those black and white shots! Everything about this takes my breath away.
I really enjoyed that song borderline I was in elementary when that song came out but it takes you back to a time when everything was good and innocent and I really appreciate it life has really changed alot since then fast forward about 30 plus years when I've lost both of my parents and everyone else that I've loved and cared about ohh I wish I could go back
@@zbrancg9572 I felt every word of that. I would give anything and everything to return to that time - when I was a kid, my mom and nephew were still alive, and life was as close to perfect as it would ever be. Who knew then how much pain and heartbreak would be waiting for us around the corner? Take care of yourself. And be good to yourself.
I remember hearing this when it first came out. I KNEW this woman would become a major star. Why? Listen to how she changes pitches and different emotions over the scope of the song. What a performance!
I'm 50 years old, this song came out when i was 9, would have never thought the world would turn into what we are seeing now... Glad to have experienced better times, better people, better love, better everything..😎🙌🏽🤙🏽
@@giannirocchi83 Couldn't agree more. I was 12 in '83, and the music and videos from that time period literally live in my DNA. Madonna's videos were EVENTS. Today's music feels so transitory in comparison.
My fav Madonna - I was like 1 years old when this came out - my mother says the first time she heard me talk full words but it wasn’t a sentence - I started singing this and somehow I copied the words and “borderline … keep pushin me “ Anyways when I was 17 I had an older Puerto Rican bf who was passionate but drove me crazy and this song always gives me nostalgia , somehow my mama says I knew this as a baby !
Despite all the cheerfulness, feel-good and dance vibes that Madonna exuded with her debut album, there is a lot of ambiguity and hidden sadness in it. Borderline is the outstanding example of this. I want to dance and cry at the same time whenever I hear it...
I remember her debut album hanging on the wall of my favorite record store(!) uncounted times. I knew and liked Holiday at that time but this visual made me buy the LP immediately. A few weeks later I was the greatest Madonna fan of all times. But that's a different story.
+Lana Gabrielle LOL I am having an 80s binge too!! Last video "Voices Carry" by Til Tuesday now Madonna "Borderline"! Who knows, maybe Thompson Twins "Doctor Doctor" next! Got my rubber bracelets and my keyboard tie on. Hey that's my New Coke!! You better Swatch yourself totally!

My mum loved Madonna, played her Greatest Hits every Sunday cleaning. My mum passed this year so I just listen to all the oldies and think about her now
Here I am at 17, born 2004 and graduating in a few months, and loving all the 80s and 90s classics, my parents joke that I am an older soul in a younger body due to how much I enjoy everything about the 80s and 90s. My parents raised me on the right music and I am very thankful they did. Edit to this: I have graduated and managed to get two jobs.
It’ll be interesting once you get older. You’ll start to see alot of music trends/artists repeat themselves. When I was your age Madonna had alittle bit of a rough period and it was shocking to see her huge comeback with hung up. It’s hard to explain how shocking it was for both her and Mariah to have huge comebacks at the same time. It really was alot of fun.
I was born in 2005 in Asia and I love the 80s American !!! All the musics ,the fashions ,the films and everything!!! So phenomenal and Iconic ,I wish I had a time machine so I will enjoy my teenager’s life every single minutes back in time.
Me from the UK and the sign of a great artist is when your music transcends time. So it's no surprise that Madonna has been making hit music for over 40 years and is still relevant.
I remember my ex husband placing a boombox on the back of our car, listening to this song while driving up to the highest mountains of Puerto Rico. We were recently married and young. This experience still sits deep in the core of my soul. Thank you Madonna 💕💕💕
Madonna has recorded a lot of great songs, but this one is special to me because it reminds me of a certain time in my life. As usual, she has a first rate video to go along with it.
It is making a comeback right now, the hair and clothes. I've been seeing it everywhere here in New Orleans for the past year. I don't know where you live but it has to be coming from somewhere and New Orleans is not known as the fashion center of the globe so it must be heading your way soon too.
Just this past month I have seen gals pairing pink skirts with horizontally striped black and white tops. I actually bought me a pink skirt and horizontally striped black and white top to pair it up with. It is a 'look' here in New Orleans and in this city we love to do outrageous pairings of patterns. Just last night I walked past a gal who had deliberately paired a pair of army patterned pants with a Hawaii floral top. She was looking all proud as a peacock as we passed one another. It was no accident. It is the nature of the defiance of New Orleanians. They do this with fashions all of the time and have been doing it for hundreds of years. 300 plus years as a matter of fact. To New Orleanians it is a sort of costuming, which is a proud tradition here. Between Halloween and Mardi Gras, there is nothing else to do with your wardrobe but to mis-match it in order to continue to masquerade year round. ua-cam.com/video/ThHz9wlBeLU/v-deo.html
No matter who she is today she is an icon and you really had to live thru it. Every white girl in my school wanted to be her. My cousins who are black could not get enough of her. She was on the radio constantly and mtv had her on rotation all the time. Girls started dressing like her it was crazy..
Sorry, Bruce! Someone has done a remake of this song and it is so horrible. I couldn't hear it for more than a minute on the radio and changed to another station immediately.
I remember I had to be dressed like Madonna. You could NOT tell me otherwise. I Love this Woman👑✨🥰💫 Thank you being there for the Best years of my childhood.
Edit 10/27/21) It’s almost a year later and I still come back to these comments and this video when I need to. I miss my mom every day but I try so hard to treasure all of my fond memories of her. Thank you all for your kind words. Hold your loved ones close and look to every corner of the world for joy. Hoping you all are having a restful day wherever you are, and if not, know there are many restful days to come. My mother took her own life this morning and I'm absolutely devastated. She had been struggling for a long time, and I'm glad that at least she's not in pain anymore now. This was one of her absolute favorite songs, and we used to scream it in the car together whilst driving to God knows where. She had a beautiful voice, and an even more beautiful soul. I miss her dearly, but I'm happy to at least have this and all of her other favorite 80s tunes to listen as I reflect on all of our wonderful memories we've made together. Rest in peace mom. You were the best woman I ever knew, and I will live every day of my life for you.

This is simply Madonna's finest song. Everything about it is perfection.
That's actually really interesting to know. I'm 21. Thanks for that, you learn something new every day as they say haha

+pup lover I got this tape in early 1984, but I didn't notice people copying her outfits until after "Like a Virgin." Before that she just wore various things like in this video and the "Burning Up" video.
Madonna is so timeless and talented. I bet you if she released this song today it would be a numbet one hit in 2024. It's just that good!
One of my favorite old school songs of The Beautiful talented Madonna 💖💖💖
Hello Sherry 👋 how are you doing today??
mine too
What a pretty and wonderful woman ,hello my sweetie ?
Madonna's street urchin persona is the one that will remain with us even after she's gone -totally her own, not cribbed from high fashion or classic Hollywood style. She's given us a thousand different looks, but there's something natural and effortless about early Madonna.
Yes. This is quintessential Madonna.
Dion....great comment. There is nothing so genuine as the original Madonna.
I don't think it was a persona. She really struggled at first.
@@VidaBlue317 I don't think the lack of money ever impeded her ability to manipulate image or play the long game. But in the early days she made music for the audience she was part of. There was something more appealing about that.
@@dionyates2482 I really like your two comments here. Very nicely put.

Madonna 80’s songs just sound better with time. They age so well it’s unreal 🎶👌🏽
The stuff in the charts today I had a look at and they have no soul or melody. The people who are behind the music industry and the few who actually make the garbage today should be ousted.
So many independent artists go unnoticed because of this. It needs a shake up and going back to the people voting on what is good, not getting what you are given instead.
Everyone in the comments section is nostalgic, except for a few, but this song is a timeless musical gem.
Because most people like to project their egotistical beliefs onto music made by someone else.
Wish I could get in time machine and go back to 80's

A classic for those of us who grew up in the 80s, a upbeat song that makes me feel sad for a time passed, not appreciated at the time and never to be repeated.
So true.
You crazy I loved the fuck out of this song. It was mad appreciated by people with taste

She the QUEEN OF POP.
Best of the 80`s back then. Great time in my life. I remember the girl I had a crush on. This song always reminds me of her.😊
If the 80s had UA-cam, this song, along with Like a Virgin, would be over a billion views within the first year or two, that's how popular it was. Kids today really have no sense of how big she was, kind of like the Beatles ... even though kids today have heard of them, they really just have no idea of their impact and how wildly popular they were.
Still get those 1983-84' chills when I hear this song..🥰

Individuality , unique eclectic styles and genre of music . 1982 I was 17 ,1992 at 27yr I saw Madonna live for the 1st time , the Girlie Show , in Tel Aviev.

Despite all the cheerfulness, feel-good and dance vibes that Madonna exuded with her debut album, there is a lot of ambiguity and hidden sadness in it. Borderline is the outstanding example of this. I want to dance and cry at the same time whenever I hear it...

Thats a dope nostalgic 80's vibe.
Madonna has recorded a lot of great songs, but this one is special to me because it reminds me of a certain time in my life. As usual, she has a first rate video to go along with it.
I would love to have 80's Madonna days. Dressing like her. Hair style and all.
