I confess I'm not a huge Madonna fan, but I love this song, for all the reasons you describe. I wish she'd recorded more songs like this and stopped trying so hard to be notorious.
“Don’t you stop loving me daddy…I know I’m keepin my baby”. Such a touching powerful line in the song coupled with the visual. As a little girl watching this when it came out I didn’t quite understand the message in the video. Who knew that years later in my life this situation of being pregnant young would resonate with me, and having to wonder about the disappointment of how my dad felt at the time. Thank you Madonna, for making timeless, important music that touches the soul when needed. You get your flowers on this one 💐💐💐
I was too young to understand then (or maybe because English wasn't my first language😅) I do remember back in the 1980s in school that issue among young people about early teen pregnancy, abortion, how contraception is against the church. Whatever the choice, it is YOU & you matter so much. Take care and be safe. PS: My wife's crying when she saw this video again after decades. Remembering how young we were then too when we got together & how our both parents were disappointed with us. They know also how hard it was during their time. But no matter how hard it was, if love is there & strong. You all can do & conquer it all. Youngsters please stay in school. Work & live your young life before starting a family.
@@armazu3Non sono d'accordo , la famiglia e' un discorso che va affrontato da giovani.. dopo i trent'anni tutto diventa piu' difficile , anche avere un figlio , ed avere le giuste energie per crescerlo .
this song came out at a time when a lot of girls during the 80s/90s were getting pregnant; i was one of them; my parents weren't happy but they supported me and helped me raise my son. she's iconic and a legend to me.
Madonna is the Mother of all Modern Pop Stars. I was a teenage boy in the 1980s and Madonna was ruling the World, clearing the path for those coming up after her. This song used to hit hard because I had a teenage GF at the time and we were just like these two, only a few years younger perhaps. Takes me back to those mid 1980s. We had it good back then. Thank you Madonna Louise Ciccone, Beautiful Lady. God Bless You.
I wish I could find a woman like that now. I'd live inside her for a month straight I'd have someone bring us food while we continue to make love only taking bathroom breaks. I'm not lying either.
Loved how Danny Aiello was deeply hurt by the news, but in the end was like, hey, youre still my baby girl, i love you, i got your back. He was one of my fave actors, RIP big guy
It's impossible to overstate the significance and importance of this song and video, even today. It helped to define a generation and FORCED a sea of people to confront a topic that no one wanted to talk about. And she brilliantly wrapped it all up in an insanely catchy pop song. I was on vacation to NYC in 1985 and we were driving around Manhattan on a rainy Saturday Night, and my Great Uncle who lived there was pointing out the buildings and who lived where, and he said Madonna lives here, we turn the corner and security guards were asking traffic to hold, and there she was, in her glory. As a young heterosexual 16 year old male, seeing Madonna IRL, I was ready to eat the tail lights off of a dump truck. That is how incredibly beautiful Madonna truly is. The rest I need not share. 😂
It definitely gets remembered by people that were teenage boys when it first came out. At 1:38, Madonna's entire right breast popped out of her outfit, which meant lots of boys paused their VHS videos in the 1980s. In the original version her nipple was clearly visible, but it's been digitally removed in this 'remastered' version.

When I was 16 shortly after finding out I was pregnant I stood in the backyard pondering life stressed about telling my family and this song came on my mp3 player. I was 13 in 1986, too. I remember the exact moment a friend of mine came over and said "have you already heard Madonna's new song?" Turned out that new song was Papa don't preach. I also miss the 80s.
This is an incredibly beautiful music video. And I especially love how her dad loves and accepts her at the end. It's the kind of happy ending that all of us who have faced angry parents for decisions we've made (or for who we are) have hoped for and not many of us get.
Unfortunately, she wouldn't have that *_CHOICE_* in today's America...!!! She'd be *_FORCED_* & *_COMPELLED_* to keep it in most states if the Repubs & their misogynistic party get their way...!!! (SMH!!!)
51 years OLD now and this is still my all time favorite Madonna video. I still tear up at the father-daughter scenes. Love her choreography as well. ❤️
As a father of 4 girls, this song is as relevant as it was back when it came out when I was a teen in the 80s. Daughters will always be our little baby angels even when they are 32 like my oldest child.
Yep,I was my dad's baby always,I hurt him,I'm so sorry I never got the chance to tell him how sorry I was before he left out of this world😢I hope he can see my heart now that he has transition 💔🥀🖤🦋
When she sings "Don't you stop loving me Daddy" 😭- gets me EVERYTIME! This song was so controversial at the time and the media crucified her for it but that's the magic of Madonna- she was a much needed voice and had something to say 💕💕 RIP to the great Danny Aiello 🙏🏾
This was the song that made me realize how good Madonna is. Her voice, her dancing, her style and creativity, and of course she's gorgeous as well. And this was just the beginning. Wow what a ride. I really hope a movie is made of her career. That would be so awesome....
WeapoN_X what the hell... the right time to do a Madonna movie is NOW. After Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman (FYI Elton John is alive and well) it’s Madonna, Michael or Davide Bowie turn
Madonna’s original raspy voice is legendary. She is at her best when she does it, i think the last time we heard her doing the raspy voice was in Hung Up 2005.
Madonna is, without question, one of the most talented artists of the last 100 years. She dominated an entire generation -- literally revolutionized the music industry in the 1980s and beyond. She was on the kind of level Michael Jordan was on at the time, and for kids in Michigan, especially, she made all of us proud.
I was born in the 90s but I remember my mom listening to the song I already got addicted to Madonna's music 😂❤growing up Madonna was my mom's favorite artist back in the day
This came out in the Summer of 86 It was a hot summer, I was 14 and Madonna was everywhere and I loved her! This song takes me straight back to being that 14 year old in the Summer of 86 I love music that can do that 💛
Agreed its one of Madonna's best vocal range and with it she was nominated in Grammy Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1986 and her vocal was equally impressive in Vogue the range was so gymnastic.
This video is SO emotional. Madonna did a great job + when I see the Twin Towers my heart aches and I start to have goosebumps everywhere in my body, it's insane.
I always was impressed by that too! She & David Bowie somehow looked WILDLY different.....yet kept their iconic essence! I don't believe I could ever change my appearance like that & still look 'like me'. On a side note, the actress Candace Cameron does that! When I looked up an older film of hers recently, I was startled how many images of her they had......& she looked different radically in every one! Yet looked like herself. Awe-inspiring!
Exactly. It showcases what happens when you don't listen to your parent & have sex without a condom. It also shows that some parents, whether they are right or not, can forgive.
When my mother was pregnant with me the others in the family told mother to abourt me. My mother said no. Mother dedicated this song to me. She always quoted from this song " I'm keeping my baby". She still is a great Mom still today. :)
My mother had me at 17 and she played this song in 92 over and over again pregnant with me. 28 years later she’s happily married with my dad. This song is means so much
Mine had me at 16 and passed from a brain aneurysm 3 yrs ago but samething why i listen to madonna today.well said buddy. Enjoy your mom love her and never take her for granted. I miss mine immensely.💯.blessings 2 u and your family
When Danny Aiello was offered the part in a music video,he thought his career was failing, so much so he nearly turned it down. Later he admitted that it gave his career a massive boost! And was very grateful for his agent for talking him into doing it.
Sillius Soddus I said True Blue is # 1 on my Top 5 Madonna's STUDIO albums. # 1 True Blue # 2 Like A Prayer # 3 Hard Candy # 4 Confessions On A Dance Floor # 5 Erotica All the other albums I deeply love them but I don't rank them.
When I was young I used to listen to this song and since I'm Italian I had no idea what the theme was. My mother was a huge Madonna fan. This week I found her album and played it and I was shocked when I heard the lyrics and understood them. It was like hearing it for the first time. Very strange experience.
Certain songs can only be fully tasted after listeners became old. Guess it is what is called growing up - abstract concepts finally being understood because our own personal life experiences has finally reach theirs (the artists).
This is how I will always remember her, this is her most iconic look, the hair cut short and bleached thin blonde. Her other looks don’t come close to this. This was also her best Album imo.
@@gulban7092 Because SHE KEPT HER BABY... 🤷🏻🙃👌🏻 She did not k¡ll her son and now she is a happy mother and his son is a 33 year old man. Great story! (Tuesday, June 16th, 2024, 08:31pm)
I love this song but I absolutely love this music video! My favorite part is the elderly couple around 2:57, I love how they are looking at Madonna and her boyfriend and reminiscing over their own past. Very beautiful video❤
I'm a kid of the 80s and cruised by on a nostalgia trip. This video is a great example of music video in its golden era. Great choreography, story, and cinematography. It tells a beautifully human story.
+OmarSunAndLights This video tells a story about a girl who made a mistake and that yes her father was dissappointed in her but at the end he forgave her! Its a great video and Madonna is and always will be an icon!
I never got along with my dad growing up but now realize he had my best interests at heart.. He’s 83 now and used to comb my hair like Elvis. I love you dad.
I remember being a little girl, when this song came out! I really thought she was having a baby. I felt so sorry for her. I thought she had nowhere to go. But, what made me fall in love with this song, is the raspiness in her voice. I always wanted a heavy, coarse voice.
The fact that this video was optimized to be high resolution when there are videos from the 2000’s from other artist that are stuck at 240p blows my mind.
Actually she is well respected in the industry, many of today’s artists such as Lady Gaga attribute Madonna as their inspiration (despite the fake feud they had)
Madonna deserves to be acknowledged way much more for her artistry and originality. However she still has the best achievements for a female artist, she conquered every field (sales, tours, hits).
This song makes me nostalgic of a time I wasnt even born in! Relatable lyrics, plastic-less actors and models, and divine music. Never in a 100 years will the 70s/80s be forgotten...
God, her body was sick. Beyond fit. She put everything into her performances...icon! She's nearly the last one left. Michael, George, Whitney...all gone. Wonder what that feels like for her?
OK, you younger folks: this video was really something because Madonna had changed her look so much for the True Blue album. She got the platinum blond short haircut and red red lipstick. She also got into amazing shape, as you can see. We girls back in 1986 all got outfits with the striped tops and the lighter-colored Levis 501s and ballet flats, like she wears here. Madonna was EVERYTHING in those days. The Queen.
my mum doesn't speak English but she really loves her songs since 90s times . I found an app where she can read it in Spanish. She felt so happy! now my mum started listening all her songs again bc she can understand. now, look at me here enjoy them too haha. it's like a tradition! Great hits!!!!! 80s and 90s the best of best.
@@furiousapplesack exactly! when we have a party or something we play, dance and sing them along. those were great songs! no bad words, no too much nakedness in their videos. Just great lyrics and good rhythm.
At the end of the video when she came home and sat down by her dad and he got up and she looked up at him.. she looked so beautiful with those eyes staring..
I wasnt crazy about her music as a kid but now that im older i truly appreciate it. Timeless classic. Everything she did back then was so controversial.
@@saadsaud55With Madonna, you need to use your brain a bit more to appreciate her artistry. Shows how incredibly stupid most people are - that they actually need a long period of time to realize "Madonna is great". She's way too ahead of everyone else. Not catered for the low-IQ ones. It's easier to be impressed by Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston, because court jesters are more entertaining.
Madonna is at her most natural in music videos. She can act. She's able to convey what's going on without words is the mark of a good actress as in Papa Don't Preach and Bad Girl.
@ Gina, exactly. Hollywood saw her as a triple threat. That is why they always criticized her no matter what she did. To me, her videos are some forms of movies entirely on their own. The fact that she conveys what is going on in a short video, is the proof of her acting abilities.
Thanks the unknow composer ! One detail . The actor that's playing with her is a well know jewish actor of máfia movies called Joe Mantegna! And she is much older than the other boys that are acting in the clip
When this song was released, my mom was pregnant with me. She and my father were very young but decided to start a family even though my grandparents were against it. She always said to me that this is "our" song.
It’s crazy I know every single location where this video was shot and Staten Island has changed so much over the years years even the neighborhood the house they used for the video my aunt use to live on that street
This is really one of her best videos ever. Strong storyline and the vid carried out the lyrics beautifully. For once, Madonna did not pander to the camera. Obviously it helps the song well written and hummable as most of her 80's stuff. This is also one of her best albums. Back then the hits were coming one after another.

This is an incredibly beautiful music video. And I especially love how her dad loves and accepts her at the end. It's the kind of happy ending that all of us who have faced angry parents for decisions we've made (or for who we are) have hoped for and not many of us get.

As a father of 4 girls, this song is as relevant as it was back when it came out when I was a teen in the 80s. Daughters will always be our little baby angels even when they are 32 like my oldest child.
