Jim Carrey, is considered to be one of the greatest comedians alive. But I've always found him to be over rated. While Loving his Drama oriented movies, such as The Truman show and Eternal Sunshine, as well as a few of his comedy movies, most of his roles seem to be over the top and childlike. So I talk about Jim Careys most over rated and terrible movie, The Mask... as well as it's sequel, Son of the Mask.

Nate might be the only person that likes the son of mask more than the original mask
The mask is great I think you watched it with cynical glasses on I never took the movie as serious as the points you brought up..yes there are better Jim Carey movies but this movie is still a great movie
Exactly dude he’s acting as if Jim Carey is a supposed to be a stand up comedian in a movie where he’s intentionally way more cartoonish than he normally is. Especially comparing his favorite stand up comedian to a Jim Carey movie like In what way are they even comparable. He also shits on slapstick a lot just so damn hateful of a childish movie cause its not just jokes with punchlines. But he’s entitled to his opinion and so are we
I disagree, I think this IS the best jim carrey movie, but I also think it's completely horrible and I couldn't finish it. I was tainted by nostalgia when watching it and this movie in particular really led to me reconsidering whether jim carrey was actually funny or not. I've come to the firm conclusion that he may be about the least funny person in history. I love physical comedy, but jim carrey just oozes desperation and reminds me of a 12 year old kid trying really hard to make his friends laugh and failing. He makes my skin crawl
Literally the whole point of the movie and Jim Carrey is that he’s cartoonish by nature and when combined with actual cartoon elements it’s interesting I think it was a good shot at a good concept but was poorly written to act as if all of slapstick and cartoons aren’t funny or entertaining is disingenuous. Dude if the only thing the movie has to offer is “lol look at these cartoon references” then it’s more than just poor writing. Also, writing is kind of like… the backbone to a movie, so if you think it’s poor I can’t understand how you’d think it’s good.
The comic is surprisingly dark for the mask

The Son of the Mask was so bad I got it for free in a cereal box as a child.
The reason the pacing seems weird is because it's based off of a comic.

@@FXKNate The comic is way more violent, I imagine the difference is much like the difference between the Teenage Mutant Ninja Taurtles Saturday morning cartoon and the comic respectively.

The mask is one of my favorite movies. The sequel was easily worse than the first movie, the dog concept was dumb as hell.
Only vid of yours I’m not a fan off. The mask was an adaptation of a popular cartoon, which was an adaptation of a comic. All your criticisms are mostly about the cartoonist tropes, but considering its source material, that’s not a criticism. Yeah the film is dated, but for its time and its audience, it worked as a movie. I agree that Cam Diaz’s character is one note, but that’s also an issue of the time. In some ways, still an issue today.
My criticisms were a lot deeper than that. Jim carrey’s acting is terrible, constantly using cliches carry the plot, the nonsensical reason the mask is released into the real world, the over use of cartoon tropes as the only joke. And by the way, if that’s derivative from the source material, then the source material sucks too. It is absolutely a criticism. The movie isn’t good, if you disagree, that’s totally valid. But I don’t see why you invalidate the work I put into this video and my criticisms of it, because of that

the nutty professor had a very similar "moral" of the story if you can even call it that, and did so much better in the comedy factor

Jim Carrey’s humor definitely isn’t for everyone. I don’t like the movie as much as I did as a kid but I definitely have some nostalgia for it. Also, how is the dancing scene racist?

I remember watching this movie in the drive in when it came out. Now, I was only 4 years old so maybe that's why I fell asleep, but it could also be because it was boring af. 🤷🏼♀️

Carrey's biggest shame isn't his comedic style, or typecast acting; but rather his 'Green Our Vaccines' initiative. Showing that actors shouldn't pretend to be scientists.

Not to be too dark, but Richard Jeni, the stand up comedian who played his "Larry-esque from "3's Company"-the unattractive womanizer" type friend, actually committed the same act that contributes to more soldiers dying each year, than combat does. I'm not saying that being in this movie drove him to it, but I'm not, NOT saying it was from being in this movie.
I'll always have some nostalgic love for this movie, but these are honestly valid points made here. Thinking about it now, most if not all of them could be applied to pretty much any comedy from this era. Also, the comment about the dog being dead now and how that's fucked up made me laugh and I'm not sorry about it.

I never liked Jim Carrey. From the first time I saw him on In Living Color he was always terrible.
I love the first mask movie but NOT because it's good because it's bad in the funniest way to me and I totally get why people hate it. Also yeah Jim Carrey is overhyped he's got like 3 pretty good movies and everything else is stupidly overhyped IMO plus he's gone on a "holier than thou listen to me how to live your life" type power trip the last few years and I can't stand celebrities that act like they don't live in an ivory tower and can understand the average every day person's life. Dudes ego is so fucking overinflated. I really don't care for him either is my point 💀
Mostly known for using Cannibal Corpse in Ace Ventura. Liar Liar is his best film. The Mask was his first film I think which probably didn't help.
