it's always my point when people praise Morrowind as best TES game ever. Oblivion did such an amazing job of reducing the huge, generic factionquest heap of Morrowind and it's 200 factions to less but better ones. Some of them absolutely amazing, for a total freedom open world RPG.
All the dialogue when they're gradually getting more suspicious of each other is amazing, but I do wish there were more opportunities to manipulate them. There's only a couple of chances to lure someone somewhere, and beyond that all you can do is get one person to kill the other when they're the last two left.
Yeah... nope. This is how it went for me. I walk in in full Dark Brotherhood garb, looking basically exactly like a trained assassin. Someone greets me alone at the door and I stab her. I immediately go upstairs, find two more people alone in the same room, and stab them. The second person isn't looking at the first so my crime goes entirely unnoticed. A fourth person comes to find me standing over two very dead bodies with a bloodstained knife in my hand and stands there wailing: "Oh no! There's a killer among us! Whoever could it be?" I stab them. That leaves one surviving person to stab, which I can now manage with complete impunity since every possible witness is dead and stacked neatly in a pile on the bedroom floor. Mission done in about thirty seconds. My thoughts: "Well, that was rubbish." Having said that, I kinda love how Jon took his time to meet everyone. (I don't think it even occurred to me to speak to any of them.) Shows how much there is to this mission than the obvious. But, even watching it played by someone who enjoyed it, it still feels broken. Seems like you'll never come under suspicion as the killer unless someone actually sees you killing. Great concept. Lousy execution.
Perhaps the best quest Bethesda has ever made. There are a lot of fun interesting ways to turn the guest's suspicion onto each other. Figures Jon just does it brute force though lol. Edit: Also, the reason they don't think you are the murderer is because you raised their disposition to max. If their disposition is lowered, you become their prime suspect instead.
"This woman who led the victim into a room and was found next to her with a sword out couldn't possibly be the murderer! She told me a really funny joke and complimented my shirt, no murderer would do that!"
Ocheeva does tell you that you forfeit your bonus if you're detected killing, but I think he might've misunderstood it to mean "don't let anyone know other people are being killed." I would think that the quest being called "Whodunnit?" would be enough to tip you off about that not being true, but whatever, it was fun to watch anyway.

Isn't glass well known for its high tensile strength and elasticity? Jokes aside, I always assumed Elder Scrolls' "glass" is not actual glass, but a material found in their world that is casually referred to as glass because of its transparency. In Skyrim, you use malachite and moonstone to craft glass weapons, which I think is evidence it's not glass as we know it.
So I finally caught up which means it's time for more uncolicited advice: 1) I you progress the Arena, you'll eventually be able to fight Minotaurs on demand who come with great souls. The Arena also let's you level/grind whatever combat related skill. On the way you might also pick up some permanent perks and bonuses...and gold... 2) Some of the "you're not allowed to kill" objectives can be circumvented by casting high enough fury spells. 3) The random Oblivion gates will keep spawning until either you complete the story gate in each city or until about 30 or so have spawned, so there's a limited amount of stones you can get per playthrough. ( 4) By getting 4 gate stones with 25% stealth each, you can enchant gear that will render you permanently invisible, 5 pieces enchanted with 20% each works too and is the max you can enchant. It breaks the game, but if you run out of things to showcase, this might be a thing.) Anyway, thanks for sharing this game and your playthroug. It's continuing to be a blast, bringing back memories and also showing me new stuff eventhough i must've played this game for 400+hrs.
LIGHT ARMOR FARMING Whenever I need Elven or Glass gear, I farm the camps from the Repairing the Orrery DLC - Camp Ales, etc. It sometimes takes a few loops, but I get all of the pieces. Take care & good luck!
You know, I looked down on acrobatics when I played Oblivion in the past. I was too young to pick up on all the little ways you could use it to absolutely break the game. I'm wondering how intentional things like being able to jump over the lava with sufficient acro skill is though. Old Bethesda was pretty good though, so maybe it was.
It's neat to see the distrust and issues with the imperial legion that show among NPCs that come from regions outside of Cyrodil. Intended or not, it at the very least can add to the head cannon for the next game in the series lol
Consider enchanting a bow with Soul Trap, perhaps as a secondary enchantment. Main carry should be loaded soul gems for backup, and Azura's star for immediate use/empty/repeat for any caliber soul - try not to carry empty soul gems and Azura's star simultaneously. That should solve the constant shortage of souls.
I know Primo is talking about Devesi when he's yelling about how someone could kill such a beautiful creature but sometimes I like to think he's speaking of Nels the Naughty, who is my favorite character in this whole quest.
I love this quest playing master manipulator I like getting some nice clothes no armor no weapon use conjure weapon before walking in also there are weapons hidden around the manor.
Whodunit is an example of the dumb fun that can be had with quest design if the quest creators break from what is typical for rpg quests. There's lots that can go wrong or don't make sense with it, but it's an example of something that puts fun above realism and logic. Oblivion is elevated by the fact that Bethesda had a lot of new tricks, such as Radiant AI and Facegen, and they just went to town with them, creating a game that is goofy, broken and highly entertaining. They pulled back in later games, except for a few flashes of genius in Fallout 3, and that's a pity. I haven't done the Whodunit? quest for 15 years and I still remember the fun of putting poisoned apples about the place, watching someone eat an apple, die, having everyone exclaim murder, and then proceed to take an apple themselves. No-one ever goes, "Maybe it's the food."
I am very late on saying this, but one of the upgrades for the Definitive Evil Vampire Lair DLC is a huge alchemy ingredient garden, with some particularly rare stuff iirc. If anything, invest in that at least.
Pro Tip of the Episode: Many poisions can be made in oblivon. Try combining 2 sets of 2 ingredients that have damage types for a double damage poision. Try Ectoplasm Ogre Teeth Wisp Stalk Caps Dragon's Tongue Shock Damange and Health Damage in one swing or one shot.
On the shadowscale quest it would've been cool if the treasure bribe was far away and when you leave to get it he is never seen again. Then when you return to the brotherhood with the heart, the guy recognizes that it's not the right one somehow. Bethesda hire me lol.
Don't know why no one told you this but if you leave the final room before you get teleported out in an oblivion gate you get... a surprise, this only happens once though and its a really valuable gift. (think sigil stone but better)
Whoever came up with the idea of a Whodunit murder mystery quest where you're the killer is a genius

We've just been watching you fight purple blobs for 30 parts.
I can't quite lay may finger on it, but somewhere in the term "glass bow" is a poblem.
It breaks the game, but if you run out of things to showcase, this might be a thing.)
Anyway, thanks for sharing this game and your playthroug. It's continuing to be a blast, bringing back memories and also showing me new stuff eventhough i must've played this game for 400+hrs.
Oh I am so looking forward to things because I know how the Dark Brotherhood questline plays out!
9:14 Same energy when Rick Sanchez wanted to destroy that microverse battery.
The Brootherhood mission is by far the funnest quest! Also, yaay new matn video
LIGHT ARMOR FARMING
Whenever I need Elven or Glass gear, I farm the camps from the Repairing the Orrery DLC - Camp Ales, etc. It sometimes takes a few loops, but I get all of the pieces.
Take care & good luck!
The greater elixir of exploration he makes with the nirnroot has 8 or nine properties in it. It really does help in the dungeons and caves.
This is my favorite quest in this game, love it so much Jon
You know, I looked down on acrobatics when I played Oblivion in the past. I was too young to pick up on all the little ways you could use it to absolutely break the game. I'm wondering how intentional things like being able to jump over the lava with sufficient acro skill is though. Old Bethesda was pretty good though, so maybe it was.
It's neat to see the distrust and issues with the imperial legion that show among NPCs that come from regions outside of Cyrodil. Intended or not, it at the very least can add to the head cannon for the next game in the series lol
I'm so addicted to this ❤️ thanks guys
Genuinely Bethesda's strongest quest to date. Like there is so much depth to it and its just way too fun.
damn incredible they just added an entire murder party minigame in here :O what a bunch of madlads. respect for that
One of the best quests in this game
Jon applying Hitman logic to Bethesda 🤣🤣🤣
Next episode is the Staff of Everscamps. Brilliant.
Nels feels like a Stormcloak :P
Consider enchanting a bow with Soul Trap, perhaps as a secondary enchantment.
Main carry should be loaded soul gems for backup, and Azura's star for immediate use/empty/repeat for any caliber soul - try not to carry empty soul gems and Azura's star simultaneously.
That should solve the constant shortage of souls.
43:48, Jon saying he isn't sure what's up with Primo who isn't here when he's onscreen and targeted.
I am so glad Jon finally got to the whodunit quest 😁
57:00 - 57:06 That quote would be quite something out of context.
I know Primo is talking about Devesi when he's yelling about how someone could kill such a beautiful creature but sometimes I like to think he's speaking of Nels the Naughty, who is my favorite character in this whole quest.
I could barely continue on because I was laughing so hard at the tiny boob spider.
Jon carrying an artifact that explicitly says it opens any lock verses yet another door that needs a specific key to open...
It just works.
Yeah this one is lots of fun worth replaying multiple times
I love this quest playing master manipulator I like getting some nice clothes no armor no weapon use conjure weapon before walking in also there are weapons hidden around the manor.
Super excited! Jon Adventures on a friday night!
Jon should do a who episode of different “Whodunnit” scenarios.
I love the dinner party quest so much fun! 10/10 quest
I’m sure everyone else is saying it too, but the Dinner Party quest is fantastic
Amazing quest! I wish Jon saved the game before and made few runs with this quest to see different interactions between all the characters.
Try
Ectoplasm
Ogre Teeth
Wisp Stalk Caps
Dragon's Tongue Shock Damange and Health Damage in one swing or one shot.
I love this quest, big Clue movie vibes
On the shadowscale quest it would've been cool if the treasure bribe was far away and when you leave to get it he is never seen again. Then when you return to the brotherhood with the heart, the guy recognizes that it's not the right one somehow. Bethesda hire me lol.
Don't know why no one told you this but if you leave the final room before you get teleported out in an oblivion gate you get... a surprise, this only happens once though and its a really valuable gift. (think sigil stone but better)
