I have disliked goats my entire life.
(several run ins as a child, teen, adult)
Now I feel so ashamed as I never understood goats.
You taught me how to flip an aggressive goat, you have showed how to win their trust and show them love.
Bless you. I will never look at a goat the same way again.lol

A goat ate my shoelace once. He was so friendly but he started eating my shoe and was like hey guy stop that. But they’re so innocent and happy you cant really yell at them. I stepped back and he was looking at me. Like he wanted that shoe.

I never considered goats could be so different from each other. When I was a kid my dad got a pygmy goat. That little fellow would follow me around like a dog and he loved to play. He'd come up and push against my knee with his head, slowly, and start pushing...and I'd push back. He really loved it.

Alpines were mostly centered as a breed in a 1000-head dairy called Laurelwood Acres in the Ripon CA area, if memory serves. They were crowded with not enough liner feet of access to feed. This dairy had all the top milk and show records for a long time, and they sold bucks all over when the 'back to the land' thing started up in the 70s. So the breed was inadvertently selected against having nice social skills, you might say. I had 18 years in Alpines and then another 10 in Oberhasli. What a difference. The Swiss-eared (upright) breeds all came from valleys in and around Switzerland, where deep snow made pure breeds form in single valleys up high. The chalet housing had one side for people and one side for livestock, so interaction with people influenced selection greatly (Papa keeps the ones his kids like). Same for the tent in the desert. This is how wild ibex were developed into modern dairy breeds

Because of your info when we got our two female goats in 2010 one was a full Nigerian dwarf & the other was like your black long horns. Obviously the same as your female whom wouldn’t start growing. An Alpine. She passed at 7&1/2 years do to a tied up rumen. Couldn’t get her to eat plastic wherever she could find it. But she had a good like & loved attention. Our Nigerian is 12 now & has escaped death so many times and my husband and I thank the Lord Yeshua we still have her.

That comment you made at the end about goats needing to have their teeth ground flat was something I hadn't heard of before....but it makes sense because I know that horses have that problem when they get older. Two of my goats are coming up on 9 years old and, although they seem fine now, I'll definitely have the vet check their teeth at their next annual appointment.

Thanks for sharing. I have two lamancha does, and a boer wether. The boer is not as personable as the lamanchas, he's a bit more standoffish. The girls have loads of personality. One is a love bug and super vocal, the other is a bit of a brat, but she is the queen with a royal butt head attitude one second and loves you the next. I think people overlook goats not realizing that they have all these awesome, funny, loving, quarky personalities.

Hi there, did you solve the feeder problem for the young goats ? My suggestion is to add some 2x2 timber to the outside of each feeding slot in the form of a V. Leave a gap at the bottom of maybe 2"
It will act as a barrier so they won't jump in, it will still allow them to get their heads/horns thru to eat. It will reduce the ability to get their shoulders past the impediment.

Have you tried a feeder where the opening is shaped like a V? I've had cows for 30 years and now I have goats and sheep as well. I really get frustrated with the goats getting their feet into the feeder and have to constantly upgrage.....especially for growing goats.. ..But I want to try the V shape feeder which works for cows to accommodate the horns... There is also the tombstone design they use for Longhorn cows
