Frank should have invited Freddy to dinner, had a great meal, then, in the middle of the meal, Frank has a platter brought to Freddy, lifting it to find Frank's attempt to make ribs. It would've been a great moment and a sign of Frank's gratitude for all the years Freddy made him his ribs.

Frank legitimately liked Freddy as a friend, but he lived in a world where people are a means to an end, including his wife. He didn’t know how to have a true friendship which is why he saw the main purpose of Freddy as being a cook first, friend second. Likewise Claire’s purpose was to help him get into a rich family and politics first and then be a wife second.

Actually, ironically, this is one of the few moments when Frank is being honest and real with someone. There is no facade of fake compliments or social courtesies. What we see here is that Frank Underwood is actually, socially awkward when he is being genuine. When Freddy tells him that he's leaving, Frank doesn't really know what to say becase he's sad about it. You can sense the slight pain when he stumbles in saying 'there aren't many people that I...am comfortable with'. So to cover up his sadness, he chooses familiarity by asking Freddie to cook him ribs 'just like old times'. And in case one thinks that Frank feeling 'sad' is strecthing it, watch his converstaion with Tom Yates in the same episode (s4e11).

  • @MerchantIvoryfilms
    @MerchantIvoryfilms 4 роки тому +732

This scene is far more complex than what is being said. And starts before the "ribs" remark.
"Frank" was obviously sad and hurt to hear Freddy was leaving 0:50 It's clear frank has (In his mind) very few friends. Now what's the kicker is Fredy clearly understands Frank, probably only one of 2-3 people who really do. And if they were "Friends" Freddy would have taken this moment to comfort his friend. But this is the where the complexity of the scene lays in. Fredy knows Frank just uses him. Always been the help, as he put it. So instead of what would be a friend comforting another friend after seeing them visibly sad he says "Nothing" and starts to turn away.
This scene makes me so sad to see Fredy treated like this, you can even see him smile a little when it appears Frank is offering to have him over for dinner only to be asked to cook instead and see his face turn despair and frustration. Frank is incapable of helping or thinking about anyone other than himself. And Fredy is right, Claire is just another hired help in his pocket and Fredy knows this. He's not saying it to piss off Frank, he's saying it to tell Frank "I see through you" "I Know who you really are"
Frank even is left defenseless, no threats, bribes, death speeches, nothing to hold over Freddy's head, just looks at him helplessly 2:07 as he is at that moment seeing that Fredy is a hell of a lot smarter than Frank gave him credit for.
The beauty of what i just analyzed is why "Films or TV" (Story telling) of this nature can be interpreted differently hence film is art. I chose to look at these characters and create my own view of what they were really thinking, so while you can disagree or tell me I'm wrong, the beauty is, you can't be right or wrong about art. Either way, thanks for reading now excuse me while i take a long pause and then (Punches oval office desk twice with my fist) *Roll credits*

I'll admit it, I first thought Freddy was overreacting but when I really think about it, his reaction was actually very reasonable and understandable.
Frank wasn't a genuine "friend" to Freddy, he was another part of his collection like what Freddy stated. Instead of saying "Do whatever makes you happy and I wish you the best of luck.", Frank was still attempting to find some way to get him to work for him and it was “make me food” instead of "maybe we could go out and have dinner together with a few other friends." it was "make me dinner!"
He viewed Freddy as more of his personal chef, and Freddy knew that. He was just playing it safe until he found some way to get away from him for good.
I think he always despised him, but maybe he had a little hope that maybe he could be a friend when he smiled a little when he thought Frank would invite him to have a night out. Of course that hope disappears right when he mentions "cook ribs for me."

Frank is credited for too many faults of which many people are their own fault. Frank's action often sharpened the sword to which the so called "victims" fell on, but nobody forced them to do that.

@@Xerkrosis this is where I know you’re either hiding your racism or just plain hateful for some reason.
Taking an opportunity to expand and grow your business is not greed. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with making money. If you hadn’t noticed, we live in a capitalist country and an American like Freddy is free and socially encouraged to go out there and make that money. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with growing a business like Freddy’s, which wasn’t exactly incredibly successful to begin with and had plenty of room for growth.
But for some reason, some odd reason, some reason I can’t unearth because you sure as hell will lie or move goal posts, you think it’s ‘’greedy’’ for a business owner like Freddy to sign a contract to grow his business, and you’re using this accusation of ‘’greed’’ as the basis to wipe Frank’s hands clean of any impact he had on others.

I don't know how much you're peer pressured into going a certain direction with your life. If you're encouraged to grow your business as much as you can, then you surely also are made aware of the risk to lose everything. And blaming for taking the risk onto someone who offered the opportunity, especially one without an ill intent or better yet unknowing of the entire affair, is sign of poor character.
In Frank-Freddy's case: Frank just visited, because he liked the place. After Frank's rise, Freddy just happened to be given the opportunity to profit from it: First it made his place public and of good reputation, because a vice president visited the place. This made it, that people were flocking to his business - which negates btw your point of his business going nowhere - and secondly: It presented himself with offers where now the risks came in: Selling his business.
But nonetheless, my argument of Frank's innocence wasn't the "greedy" aspect of Freddy by agreeing for that contract. My argument rather was, that Frank just happen to present the perks to Freddie. Nor has Frank made any knowingly action to trick Freddy. I've just explained what was the reason to Freddy's downfall, which was the greed to expand his business by taking in the risk to lose everything (my sharpened sword metaphor). He took the risk, he lost. Nobody forced him to, and nobody but the business-partner encouraged him to take the deal.

If anything, Frank should be the one cooking for Fred, and if he were a buddy of his, he'd surprise him with that, or at least have him over to join him and Claire for dinner on his last night. I think you're missing the point. Frank believes he was treating Freddy like a friend, as equals, but Freddy always understood that their relationship was one of subservience. Freddy is very aware of this contradictory relationship and it was making him feel that he was not being true to himself. Frank also used Freddy to counteract the affects of alienation that comes from positions of power. The idea that Freddy represents the "every man" allowed Frank to stay in touch with his humanity. Frank was using Freddy, Freddy was coerced into this relationship because of money/condition, and as soon as Freddy didn't need his employment, he left.

Everyone saying Freddy over-reacted, no he didn't. These guys know each other for years only because Frank liked Freddy's cooking and that's it. Freddy was a dose of realism in Franks world, but only spoke to Freddy when he could get something out of it, in this case some good ribs. There was no sense of equality between them as friends. This is probably one of the best examples in the series of how narcissistic Frank is. He might have liked Freddy, but only to the amount of what Freddy could provide for Frank.

SchoolrejecT The problem with this whole argument as we seen in season 2 where Seth (whatever the fuck his press secretary name was) tell frank to betray Freddy, Frank not only refused but adamant to protect him. He even offered Freddy money in order to help his business. So what Freddy did here was really overreacted.
You have to understand, everybody have a character traits that define them. For Freddy, it is his cooking and ribs. Frank was joking around and said one day Freddy should come and cook him ribs just like old time. Just like in season 1 where frank and his friend sneak into an abandon library like old time.
You might think “there is more to freddy than just cooking rib” but you have to understand that little action no matter how little it is is what connect them. It is the reason why they even know each other in the first place and why frank wasn’t willing to betray Freddy.

Great scene that illustrates both characters very well.
I don’t think the purpose of this scene is to illustrate how frank sees everyone around him as just tools on his belt (the way Freddy sees frank).
I think this scene more shows how frank, a person who parades his sociopathy as a valuable trait, also suffers from his genuine inability to connect with others on an emotional level.
People saying frank used him clearly don’t remember the full story. If anybody benefited from their relationship it was definitely freddy.
That’s why Frank is so baffled, upset, and clearly hurt.
And when Freddy makes it clear that they aren’t really friends; then directly questions franks ability to feel at all it really hurts Frank.
This is because while frank can fake and maybe even feel on a surface level basic emotions like hate, disgust, pleasure, glory - it’s complex empathy that is impossible to fake that frank is blind to.
Freddy and Frank found their friendship transactional but for Freddy is made it hollow- for frank it made it emotionally digestible.

It’s not friendship since the beginning. It’s a condescending relationship from frank to Freddy since the very start. It got worse as Frank climbs up the ladder. Eventually, Freddy became a pet to Frank. You see that when frank asks Freddy do cook ribs for him and when he shouts at Freddy to call him mr. President. From the bottom of frank’s heart, Freddy is a dog that pleases the owner, but eventually, it’s a dog

Frank genuinely does care for Freddy and really was hurt when he learned that he was leaving. I honestly think that when Frank offered the idea that Freddy make him ribs, it didn’t come from a bad place, just only because that was the dynamic they always had and it would’ve been a trip down memory lane. But that’s when Freddy was a cook and he had to cook. Frank unfortunately is selfish that he can’t read the room when he says something like that. It makes sense why Freddy reacted the way he did.

Freddy was right to be annoyed at Frank's reaction. But Freddy was wrong to completely freak out like he did. This is one of the few times Frank is being genuine. He did just mean to have Freddy's ribs one more time for old times sake. It was still insulting. But Frank also did things for Freddy. They were never friends; Frank just thought of Freddy more as his own personal chef and Freddy was just savvy and aware enough to humor him. Freddy was 100% justifiably right in his reaction to Frank's comment. What exactly was he supposed to be grateful about?

I see alot of people commenting stuff like this because they know Frank's character and even though they know he is a bad person because he is the main character we mentally start justifying stuff. But remove yourself from that perspective and you can see where Freddie's anger is justified. Frank's reaction to the job and offer for one last hang out is for freddy to make him ribs shows what there relationship was. It was never a true friendship it was frank seeing a person with no power or threat to him and being able to relax with that person. But this isnt the same as friendship it is a dimnening position to put someone in that you few them so low. He always saw freddy as the help and that's why he could be friendly with him even if he didnt relise it but thats how he always saw him. That's what the offer shows because that's was his first instinct to ask him to serve him. If they where genuine friends he would have said let's have dinner together or cook something together. But no he wanted them to return to when he first started his relationship. Where freddy was below him and serving him food because that's where he liked freddy to be and wants to keep him for his own comfort. I also think freddy has known this the entire time they knew eachother but he let it sit because he knows he cant piss of his costumer and a very powerful man. And that's how he knew frank would help him get a job working for him again because he knows frank likes that power dynamic it would keep him in. But this was the last straw when his suspicions where confirmed about where frank wants him to be when he is about to be out from under him frank just wants to relive the times he was over freddy.
