The back 2 men must've been tough because I couldn't be locked up in so small a space without windows. These where real men. Amazing thanks for your service

Nice video! I worked on F4 and RC 135 avionics in the early 80's. The F4's had a Lear-Seigler INS and the 135's had a doppler nav. radar with a Litton LN 21 astral nav. These Hustlers were flying when I was born. It was a fantastic time in aviation :).

Hey Scott, I like your bit of technical history from someone who was there...hands-on. I also worked F-4Es (weapons systems) in the early 80s. The "good" old Cold War days...

That's amazing. You'll see this same navigation system on the SR71.

I remember watching B58 operating out Carswell AFB in early 60's while my dad was stationed there. I was in fifth grade at the time we could see flight line and General Dynamics from the school.

14:17 , there's a good chance you saw this B58 -- if I put in the coordinates correctly , it looks to be in that area goo.gl/maps/X6usaWUvVVsdi6bD8

Wow! I bet the B58 was a sight to see, I grew up in central London, I did see; and of course, hear Concorde very regularly back in the day, but nothing like the B58 lol..

Outstanding video! Very nice, seeing the mini gun in action. Moves A LOT quicker than I thought.

Certainly one of the more beautiful aircraft designs of its time.

Convair first developed the elevons for the XF-92 Delta wing aircraft in the late 1940s, long before the B-58 used them, but I believe the concept was first used on the Me163 Komet in WWII.

Love the nav system readout on paper tape. I guess it'd suck to get a printer jam in combat conditions though LOL. And just as well the thing was fast , Those GE J79' engines were smokey as all get out! You'd see the smoke from way out. Often said they were a dead giveaway of position with the F4 Phantom in Vietnam - the 'Judas' engine' lol

Thanks, this is really interesting. Interesting seeing the mechanical/analogue solutions for the flight control etc. I think the elevon might have been developed earlier by Avro for the Vulcan.

What an amazing plane for it's time. I didn't realize that within 10 years of ww2 we got to this. I suppose harvesting all that German technical data didn't hurt.

Serious question: was that "astro tracker" dome the inspiration for R2-D2 in Star Wars? (Remember how R2-D2 fits in a little section at the top of Luke's X-Wing fighter?)

I wonder why Convair didn't make the B-58 a tailed delta like the Douglas A-4? Having a tailplane would've enabled the B-58 to have flaps and therefore a much lower takeoff and landing speeds.

The A4 is a subsonic carrier capable ground attack aircraft, the B58 was a bomber designed to fly at a 0.9 mach cruise with the capability to make a short mach 2 dash into the target area, fast enough to outrun any fighter interceptors.
