  • 13.1 miles, 21.1 Kilometers. This is the 2020 World Half Marathon Championships!
    On the flat and fast streets of Gdynia, Poland, many of the world's best athletes took to the streets to see who would prevail in this year's installment of the world half marathon championships. Thanks to good weather, good organization, and fantastic competition, this proved to be the fastest world championship half in history.
    What a way to end the 2020 Season!

    Happy that there wasn’t such a negative response from everyone when Joshua Didn’t win because when Kip home lost everyone was wondering if was going to retire or if eh was injured, I was just happy to see a huge smile on Joshua’s face for his fellow Ugandan Kiplimo.

    Nothing to be ashamed of for Chep. An unevenly paced low 59 is hardly a poor performance. With better pacing he'd have surely been within a minute or less of the world record in what is clearly not the distance he's trained for. Incredible win by Kiplimo though!

      If anyone paid attention to the pre race conference Cheptegei did say this race was a preparation for the Olympics to come he added saying even if Kenyans or Ethiopians would give him a lesson or two since he is dominant on the track he would still be happy if the crown goes to his fellow countrymen. in this race Chep & Kip used tactics kept checking on each other so that whilst other athletes are concentrating to dethrone Chep he was cushioning Kip to safety.Congrats to all their good pbs nrs sbs was so proud of my fellow South Africans too performance

      Cheptegei didn't train at all for this race. He had no time. At least he helped team uganda win silver team. It's Kiplimo who has the experience and was well trained going in to the race so he was always the favorite. That was well known by commentaries in Uganda

    • @rahelwijeyekoon9403
      @rahelwijeyekoon9403 4 роки тому +9

      Cheptegei *was* at his prime. He's still at an incredibly high level obviously, but there's only so many peaks one can hit within a single season. He peaked for his 5000m WR then managed to maintain that incredible fitness for a month for the 10,000m WR, so it's not really that surprising that he fell off a bit and couldn't maintain it for this.
      I dunno how much Kiplimo has raced this year, but I don't think he's had as many peak performances so recently and I'm guessing this was his primary goal for this season, whereas this was both a first foray into the half marathon distance and a tertiary goal for Cheptegei behind the two world records. Notice how publicly confident Cheptegei and his coaches were going into the two world record performances, whereas for this they didn't make nearly as much fanfare about it - they were being realistic and knew he wouldn't be on top form.
      That's not to take away from Kiplimo's achievement as it was an incredible performance any way you cut it and he may well have beaten a top form Cheptegei, but I think people were getting a bit too hyped and expected a slightly unreasonable amount from Cheptegei to think he would be able to break all 3 WRs within a couple months. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he has the capability and comes back and does it, but there's only so much the body can handle in such a short time frame and this looked like it was one ask too many. It'll be exciting to see what he does in the future now that he has his first proper HM race under his belt, but I'm guessing he's going to focus on the track next year as that's where his chances of Olympic gold are highest.

    Just remembering that Kiplimo ran a 7:26 3000m just a month ago, so he has exceptional speed and endurance. I can't wait to see Cheptegei and Kiplimo competing in a 5000m/10000m race.

    Excellent attempt by Cheptegei he just needs more training and more importantly patience for longer distances.
    He is not the only one fighting for glory and domination.

    10k and the half are very different races, and joshua only had 10 days to transition after a 10k WR effort
    it's no surprise he didn't win, but still raced very well

    running on concrete surface always hurt my feet, especially when pushing the pace. Maybe my body is just old, but concrete is definitely a much harder surface than ashpalt.
    Looking at the course and how they mostly run on concrete.. I'm amazed by the strength of their legs and feet.
