Every time I hear about another ungodly finishing time from another unknown in east Africa, it simply reinforces how great Daniel Komen was. Let me be clear, he rewrote the history books on distance running in a few years. Live high, train high, eat clean, REST, ignore immense suffering, and YOU will find your way out of poverty. He may not have known his age. My mother is from Uganda and she mentioned that many villagers do not know their real age because it’s not really recorded anywhere or deemed important enough. We definitely didn’t know my grand mother’s age, so we had to guess based on the relative ages of other people we knew.

Andreas Thunemann look at the photo at 9:48 and tell me that this doesn’t look like a kid? The only evidence that anyone has that he isn’t 19 is that he’s from Uganda, which isn’t evidence at all. The birth certificate is just the last remaining excuse for people who can’t get over the fact that their white hero Ingebritsen is overrated.

Kid was 15. Just African life of hard work in the field with the hoe and being in the bushes looking after cattle and goats as mostly a pastoralist community and chasing wild animals from eating your animals you keep makes the body hardened to life. A 10 year old African village boys body is more developed than an 18 year old city boy.

It’s very common for the Sebei tribe of Uganda. They grow up first and not change at all. Also if you are wise you will have seen that most Ugandan athletes are of lean stature and usually unchanged for a long time.
