Ahhh the good old day when you could by a quality balsa built kit with sheeted wings from Great Planes for a reasonable price and do your own finish.

I'm not normally a fan of backing tracks but in this case I'll make an exception... That is a mighty fine piece of music & I might even scour iTunes to try and find it

Initially the backing track was a song called 1988 by Mount Cyanide and I did end up getting it off iTunes ..this is a completely different track again

Hey body how do you make the wing is that foam or is a mold

Good video. What are the advantages of this procedure? What is the cost of the glass fiber you use? I'll be glad if you can reply.

yessiree...thats how you do it. I prefer using a brush first but it don't matter. you probably should have shown them how to use automobile resin. Its readily available and less expensive. Maybe i will post a few videos on working with fiberglass.

Robert Spencer auto resin will melt the foam core you have to use epoxy

if i make a polyester foam car wing and cover it with fiberglass like this, will it be stiff enough ? do i need to add wood or some reinforcement?

what happened to the 1988 song from mt cyanide?

I found if you mix 100% denatured alcohol with 45 min epoxy you will never get one wrinkle and it's smooth as glass with very little sanding. I do the same when bonding carbon fiber to balsa and it's super strong with zero flex.
    Great Stuff

Great to know. What ratio of alcohol to the epoxy mixture do you use?

    • @WizzRacing
      @WizzRacing 8 років тому

      +Scott Shea
1-1 Ratio or till you can just use a paint brush like you're staining it. As the alcohol will evaporate which makes it lighter. As you use less epoxy and it soaks into the balsa better for a higher bond.
I do the same thing when fuel proofing the areas that need it. It makes for a better looking finish.

Thank you! I just bought an old Hobby Shack "Spirit of 76" and I was planning to glass it, but I have have no experience with this in the past, hence turning to youtube and other forums. Thank you, I'll try this method with that project!

I see so many vids like this with folks barely getting the cloth moist. This is not a good idea. All that dabbing runs the risk of misaligning fibers and ending up with resin/epoxy starved areas. A better way is to get some resin on there and spread it around. Use a squeegy to remove excess. This ensures proper wet out. It's like painting a wall in your home with a dry roller. Get some paint on the wall already! hahahaha

I have to agree with you, plus he is using 20 min resin, which by the end it will be very dense and difficult to spread. I prefer to pour the resin there, squegee the crap off of it, and the pad it dry with paper towel to soak out excess resin.

***** question re glassing technique, on the last resin pass, should you have a glassy finish or still feel/see the weave as you pull the spreader over it?
