I wish I had seen this before. I saw the one on massage because I have been massaging after heating up my eyes with rice sock and I damp washcloth underneath. That explains why some days my vision is better than others. You’re the only one who has explained how to do both things separately that I have found. Thank you for your videos and you seem very friendly so it’s comfortable to watch like you’re not stuffy! 😂 I like your three suggestions and there’s three different products that are safer because she can regulate the temperature better so I’m gonna order one of those. Thank you for that.!
This is a great video with good info. I woke up today with what I thought was a cyst or large sty inside my lower eye lid. I went to my eye doc. And he told me it was a blocked oil gland. I have dry eye disease which is attributed to Sjogrens disease. He expressed the oil gland and it was pretty painful for a bit. He’s an MD and I totally trust him. A suggestion he gave me was to buy those “hot hands” instant heat packs for gloves. They stay warm for several hours and are a nice consistent heat. Costco sells a box of 160 for $13. He also said this is common as people age. Enlarged gland was pretty big and it was full of what look like white toothpaste…very thick. He also gave me a RX for Tobramycin/Dexamethsone eye drops to help with swelling. Thank you for your great video. It made me realize that others deal with this too.
Haha ! I cracked up when you whizzed that washcloth across the room 🤣. That’s how I feel about a washcloth cooling or heating too quickly too ! I’ve been having a problem when I cry . My under eyes stayed puffy for months last time , then I cried again yesterday. Now they’re a puffy mess today even worse! I’m 46 . So I know age doesn’t help. But what can I do to get the swelling gone ? I’d just gotten the bags to look halfway normal and now they’re just ridiculous again. I’ve tried cold eye roller , I’ve tried a heated eye massage device that you put oil around the eyelids and massage . It vibrates too . No luck . Thank you 🙏 😊
I have been dealing with MGD for a few years now and seen multiple ophthalmologists. After discovering this channel and the level of information you have offered in these videos, I cannot understand why none of the doctors I have seen over the years have not gone over the risks of compresses and importance of correctly using them, among all the other things. I can’t even explain how lost I have felt trying to manage this condition, it affects every aspect of life and I just get blown off, told to wash and compress.
You are not alone. Also the knowledge and the level of what we know now, especially about MGD has increased a lot in just the last few years. It makes me wonder what we will know in 5 years time. Luckily Dry eye Treatments and research is entering a golden age, at least it feels like it. Hopefully this can give a lot of people hope and direction.
I’ve recently had cross linking surgery to stabilise karakotonus (sorry for spelling) and using compress to address dry eye. I’ve always suffered from dry eyes but gotten worse after treatment. Eye massaging was mentioned (for the first time ever) almost in passing by the clinician - nothing as detailed and helpful as your videos. Thank you. 🙏
Try using some all natural castor oil drops. You can put some in a small, sterile amber dropper bottle and then add a few drops of all natural tea tree oil. Try a couple drops in each eye then a warm compress. Research shows castor oil is effective and safe for dry eye and tea tree oil kills blepharitis bacteria.

Hi Dr. Guymon - I'm a keratoconus patient and have received conflicting advice from healthcare providers and literature. Is it advisable for a keratoconus patient to use warm compresses and massage to support the treatment of dryness / meibomian gland function? Or is the contraindication and risk to corneal warpage to high?
I can understand that you are getting conflicting advice... as doctors have different stances on this. The risk and worry is there for people that have keratoconus and do warm compresses and eyelid massage. You could ask your doctor if there would be other dry eye treatments and home remedies you could try first without doing warm compresses?
I am using egg but never give a pressure to the eye, I just touch the eyelid using the egg shell. What do you think? I am hoping it is safe because it is very effective for me.
I recently purchased a Bruder mask. my eye doctor never explained to me that it could cause blurred vision after use. from everything I am reading, that means the mask has done its job.. is this true and will the blurriness go away? i dont want to damage my cornea and thats what im afraid of.
I lost an entire diopter of vision within 5 days of following my doctor's advice of hot compresses and eye lid massage. She did not warn me at all of the risk of changing corneal shape. I am devastated. I kept asking if it could have been the heat or pressure and she said no. Well, here it is. Is there anything I can do to reshape it? I had been doing End Myopia and already gained half a diopter. But now losing a full one after my vision hadn't changed in 25 years? Devastating.
That's a big jump in vision for 5 days. Sorry to hear that you had that change happen. A change that quick, I would be worried of other causes as well. Be sure to keep getting checked regularly.
I got one, paid good money and I liked it, except no way to sanitize it. Pretty gross using it over and over again. Instructions say spot clean.. so I’m stuck with something I really can’t use. You should talk about sanitizing. Very important
Hello doctor, I found a mask that works by heating it with water, with a similar shape to the last one that appears in the video (with holes). Can it be safe for the cornea and for the eye?
My eyes have been bugging me lately but I know I’m on a device all day and night for work and fun. I got one weighted heated eye mask and it has helped however when I take it off my eyes feel heavy and harder to open and adjust back, any tips?
Are you lying down when you do the warm compress? It could be changing the shape of your cornea for a little bit. See if you can decrease the weight to your eyes.
I have seen really thick gunky oil... but I don't think I have seen it as dry as magic sand. That is interesting to me. At your next eye exam you should have your eye doc look at that, I would be curious to hear what he/she says about it.
I just got the Bruder mask. 22 seconds in microwave, sit in my recliner for 10 minutes. My eyes then are delightfully watery. After a few minutes I blink heavily. I do it 2-3 times a day. My optometrist told me to use dry eye drops. It did nothing. This is a natural way to go and my red eyes are are much whiter.
I like the wash cloth method. I roll up two damp face clothes, microwave them and then wrap them with another dry face cloth. They defiantly keep up a nice warm heat for 6 minutes and it’s a slightly moist heat that feels good on my eyes.
Assuming a 1000 watt microwave, how many seconds are you using to heat the damp cloths? At what temperature setting? Highest? Thank you for your reply.
@@lawrencethompson465My Microwave is a 1100 watt. I heat the damp cloth for 20 seconds at the highest temp. Absolutely brilliant. I’ve had MGD for sometime. I’ve picked up so much useful information from your videos. Will be changing how I use my heated mask and eyelid massage. Thank you
Hi, I have a cyst in my eyelid that the optician says might be causing double vision in that eye when looking at keyboard and screens. She said to try warm compresses and massage. Is this a common problem with cysts and how long should it take to improve?
I use a fresh folded paper Kleenex tissue on my eyes before placing the heated electric eye compress on them, in my effort to keep it clean. Thanks so much for the lengthy explanation of how to best protect the eyeball while doing these compresses, as well as how to do them correctly and effectively for the conditions. 🎉
Good day. I have a question. I have a chalazion and I want to try warm compress by using heated electric warm compress. What is the advisable temperature for warm compress? Thanks
If I feel I’ve accidentally changed the shape of my cornea from hot compresses and massage, will it change back to its original shape over time? I’ve dealt with stys for almost a year, and after seeing multiple specialists, given multiple prescriptions and drainage procedures, I was told to use heat and massage, but no one told me how hot or how much pressure, so I figured the hotter the compress and harder the massage, the better. watching your video I have a pit in my stomach because I myself have noticed a change in one eye shape from the other, and I thought I was simply overreacting from a year of paying such close attention to my eye, but I fear I may have warped my cornea as you say (I even used the hot egg treatment for months, multiple times a day. Vision seems a little more blurry these days too). My eyes feel so beat up, so tired of feeling like I’m making things worse for myself when I’ve only prayed for healing and direction. If I have altered the shape of my eye from almost a year of intense heat and massage, would an eye doctor be able to diagnose that?
Thank you so much for this video. I thought I was the weird one for having such a hard time with warm compresses but you addressed a lot of my concerns and difficulties regarding them in this video so I'm very grateful for that. One question I still have though is, is it normal for your eyes to appear red after warm compresses? I noticed that the outer white part of my eyes are especially red right after a warm compress, but there is no real pain that follows and the redness subsides rather quickly.
It can be common... the warmth can dilate the blood vessels or cause a little bit of inflammation. Sometimes it can be a tricky balance between treating the oil glands effectively and not causing too much inflammation. thank you for watching and commenting... I'm glad the video could help.
Hello doc, am interested in getting the one heated compress you mentioned at almost the end of your video; it is turquoise color, wearing this one without putting pressure to your eyes, and it looks very modern. I could not hear the correct brand name. Would you please let me know. Thanks very much.
Could the erythromycin ointment my doctor prescribed me be keeping the stye clogged? im doing compresses and cleansing my eyelid, then putting the ointment in my eye and on the stye 4 times a day (so basically keeping the ointment on the stye at all times). I feel discouraged because it won't got away! It doesn't hurt at this point, it is just constantly there!
Good question... I wouldn't initially think that it would keep the glands clogged. Make sure you are cleaning your eyelids. How is your stye doing now?
@@DrEyeGuy Thank you Doc! So the stye is finally gone (after a month!) my PCP gave me a different ointment one with a steroid in it. Im still using it at night because if I don't, it looks like the stye is trying to come back. I think the thing that helped the most is when the compresses loosened it enough to drain the stye.
Hi Doc! I would have a question for you, I was psychotic and was washing my eyes under tap water from the sink I just have this delusion that something is in my eye? Do you think that tap water could be to blame for developing blepharitis or is there not really a big chance because of this? I live in Europe.
I would think it would be a small chance that would be the cause of blepharitis.... but you never know. Did you use a certain soap when washing your eyes? Sometimes the soap has some irritants in there, or even small abrasive material that can sometimes get under the eyelid.
Do you wear makeup? I hardly ever do but apparently that can be the cause. I'm answering because I too have experienced psychotic episodes. I hope you're well now
Thanks so much for this. After years of little eye care (lazy I know!) my blepharitis is now uncomfortable and really making me consider eye hygiene! Just before I watched this I started a DIY warm saline water compress, with some tissues just to do something! I don't expect my eye redness to go quickly. I've lived with quite red eyes for some time. My eyes have started to irritate me now. One other thing. I have had an ongoing issue, when I wake up in the morning I have difficulty opening my eyes. I guess that's to do with dry eyes. (Though actually through the day my eyes water - guess that's to do with a blockage in the draining!) This morning my eyes opened quite easily I thought that was a good thing but really it may have been because the blockage was keeping the eye surface lubricated, the day continued with further eye irritation. Apologies for the length of this comment, I've reached a point where I have to give my eyes some real attention. Anyway, if you got this far thanks for reading! Best wishes to you.
For electric compress one , which setting I should use high or medium? The one you told us about cause one doctor on video says use this pads too to help but he said high setting for 20 mins I felt that even medium hi for me it’s too hot Medium seem warm enough High feel like I might get burned But I read online if the temperature not hot at 105 or so oil won’t melt
@@DrEyeGuywell the results of that definitely speak for themselves, just wish I could get off the PC and iPad more, doesn’t help being addicted to UA-cam...
@@razeboxanimations3215 If you feel like the warm compresses starts to get colder before your 7 minutes, then I would increase the microwave time. If you feel like you aren't getting that much help, I would in crease the length, maybe to 10 minutes.
Do you think I can use this mask for my 8 year old.I just took her to Optomotrist and learned she had a stye. He recommended rice in a sock but was wondering about the eye patch.
Sir i have done cataract surgery 3 months ago now i m dealing with eyelid pain and itching i have seen 2 doc m dealing with allergy one doc told me to use warm compress twice Md other cold compress twice plis help me what sud i do .. how do i know if i have MGD
A lot of times an eye doc, especially an eye doc that treats a lot of dry eye, can evaluate and determine the condition of your meibomian glands. That would be good to know if that is contributing to your symptoms.
Would it be safe to use a warm compress on an eye with possibly obstructed meibomian glands? There isn't anything visually obstructing the glands, but if the insides are clogged with hardened meibum, would it still be safe?
Thanks for this, Doc! My dr recently performed a test and stated that I have MGD in both eyes. He recommended a special $750.00 treatment called Lipiflow and that was it. I went home and found your video and have been progressing. Unfortunately, my Bruder mask blew up this morning and now there are beads all over the floor...Plz keep up the great work!
@DrEyeGuy Yes, it blew up in the microwave oven. The beads are plastic and will explode if heated over 90 seconds or so. I recently bought one that uses stone beads and it's light years better at retaining heat, and it doesn't explode!
I have chalazion on my right upper eye lid earlier it got bigger but after doing some home remedies now it got smaller in size but still visible and idk what to do now
Thank you doctor. One question: When i massage my eyelids after warm compress, i see a white liquid coming from the eyelids and that white liquid really burns my eyes. Is it normal? Do you think thats the oil we are talking about or something else? Its like a white tear but really burns my eyes.
Is a hot/cold compress you either freeze or microwave ok to use? Like if I just hold it on my eye not over my entire face? Or is it best to lay it over both my eyes? Also I was going to make a heat mask using rice like in a heat pack but shaped to my eyes, would that be suitable? Should I sew where my eyes are so they don't have the pressure of the rice on them?
Yes, those hot and cold compress can work great, as well as the rice packs. Just make sure they retain the heat for at least 10 minutes, try for 15 minutes. If you can make it so it won't push on your eyes as much, that would be awesome.
Whats your take on using hot water with a showerhead and using the pressaure from the water as a massage as well. Is this good or bad? I realize this feels good afterwards.
After using it my eye-sight is a little bit dissy for a while, but goes back to normal after a minute or two. Is this normal? I'm also using it quite often, is there a recommended maximum amount of times to use per day, or is more better?
Good question.. it could be from the corneal distortion from the pressure of the warm compress. If you want to do it often, I would look into getting a warm compress, like the kne from TearRestore to avoid that.
Yes, eye massages are usually more effective right after doing a warm compress, as long as you are being careful. Tea bags are great, if there is caffeine, it could help with puffy eye bags as well.
Thank you for your informative videos. Having these problems can be very scary. I was looking for the link for the blue mask from Tear Restore but could not find it here. Can you let me know where it is. Thanks again.
I got a Bruder eye mask and I always inspect what I buy by smelling it. The chemicals in the mask burned my throat and I wondered what they would do to may eyes. I tried to wash out the chemicals but it didn't work. So, it is going in the trash.
It's possible it could... if they eye veins are from possible dry eye/inflammation. But also consider, it could cause them to be worse, as the heat could cause the inflammation. Kind of tricky.
Be sure to check out the EYELID MASSAGE guide video as well: ua-cam.com/video/AbQlvJ5FOYA/v-deo.html

It's called TearRestore. I put a link in the description so you can check it out. Kind of a pricey mask, but very convenient.
@@margaretcrowley6989 Good to hear! Thanks for giving me the update!
I’ve got a puffy eye and it’s really sore on the eyelid, does heat compress heal it?
Can i do this after 2 weeks of going through lasik. Is it safe? Please do let me know.
Blessi gs to you for sharing your knowlwdge.
Love your channel, you explain things so well, I’m really learning a lot, thanks so much x
Thank you for saying that, I really do appreciate it.
Hi Doctor 👋
I have MGD due to onocular rosecea. Is using the heat mask 2 times a day. Is it making my rosecea worse?
It could be, ocular rosacea is one those tricky ones, because the heat can cause more inflammation. It's a delicate balance.
The one you told us about cause one doctor on video says use this pads too to help but he said high setting for 20 mins
I felt that even medium hi for me it’s too hot
Medium seem warm enough
High feel like I might get burned
But I read online if the temperature not hot at 105 or so oil won’t melt
Thanks for another great & informative video Dr Eye Guy. Oh, btw your eyes are looking very refreshed & good lately!
Thanks! Less time on the computer does wonders!
@@DrEyeGuywell the results of that definitely speak for themselves, just wish I could get off the PC and iPad more, doesn’t help being addicted to UA-cam...
Thx for the tips! I’m all for a mask that allows my eyes to stay open!!
Is 17 seconds a safe time to put it in the microwave and is it okay if I do the warm compress for 7 minutes
Yes it is. Just be willing to adapt if you feel like it's not working right. Might need to increase the time.
@@DrEyeGuy Which time should I increase ?
The seconds on the microwave or the minutes I apply it for ?
@@razeboxanimations3215 If you feel like the warm compresses starts to get colder before your 7 minutes, then I would increase the microwave time. If you feel like you aren't getting that much help, I would in crease the length, maybe to 10 minutes.
Do you think I can use this mask for my 8 year old.I just took her to Optomotrist and learned she had a stye. He recommended rice in a sock but was wondering about the eye patch.
My 8 year old (now 9) has used these types of warm compresses. Check with your eye doc to make sure.
Tkank you for a video . Do you Have some experience with blephasteam glasses?
No, not yet. People have been asking about this for a while... I need to buckle up and get one and try it.
It's actually usually recommended to do warm compresses to help your oil glands out.
Is the same heat method used after cataract surgery? Does too much heat affect the new lenses?
Thanks for this, Doc! My dr recently performed a test and stated that I have MGD in both eyes. He recommended a special $750.00 treatment called Lipiflow and that was it. I went home and found your video and have been progressing. Unfortunately, my Bruder mask blew up this morning and now there are beads all over the floor...Plz keep up the great work!
It blew up!? Wow. I should put that as possible dangers of doing warm compresses.
@DrEyeGuy Yes, it blew up in the microwave oven. The beads are plastic and will explode if heated over 90 seconds or so. I recently bought one that uses stone beads and it's light years better at retaining heat, and it doesn't explode!

I have chalazion on my right upper eye lid earlier it got bigger but after doing some home remedies now it got smaller in size but still visible and idk what to do now
Same. What home remedies did you do? And how is it now?
hi doc! i was wondering if discoloration from heat compresses are normal? 😅
Omg, my 15 year old brother is using this for last 3 months and he got diagnosed with serious keratoconus
Yikes! Sorry to hear that! So young too!
What are the side effect of cold compress???
Not many side effects... if you do it way too cold you could cause frostbite.
Whats your take on using hot water with a showerhead and using the pressaure from the water as a massage as well. Is this good or bad? I realize this feels good afterwards.
That can help. However, sometimes the shower water can actually irritate the eyeball and make them a little bit more red, inflamed, and irritated.
Does this work for a swollen slighly red eye?
My son isnt feeling well and out of nowhere his eye began to swell.
Is the tearrestore mask available in Ontario Canada with free shipping?
I'm actually not sure. Have you checked the website to see what they would charge you for shipping?
This made me rethink everything I do in life
Everything in life??? How did it do that?
Should you do the eye massage right after the warm compress?
What are your thoughts on using black tea bags or green tea bags compress instead?
Yes, eye massages are usually more effective right after doing a warm compress, as long as you are being careful. Tea bags are great, if there is caffeine, it could help with puffy eye bags as well.
does a tea bag stay warm for 8 minutes??

Hi thanks for the video! Can you combine electric heat masks with wet pads?
Should I be doing compresses If I have cataract implants.
OK my eye has gone blury after doing this for about 10 mins now.. Is this a problem?
What do you think of the Renpho eyemist spa mask?
What temperature(s) per se are considered “safe” in your opinion doc? Thanks!
Thank you for your informative videos. Having these problems can be very scary. I was looking for the link for the blue mask from Tear Restore but could not find it here. Can you let me know where it is. Thanks again.
Thanks for the comment. I have the link in the description of the video. It's the first link under warm compress recommendation.
@@DrEyeGuy thank you so much ! Your videos have been so informative.
Thank you, I watched 5 video, but nobody explained how to use it, appreciated
Can you recommend a good brand of tear restore mask? I have to order it on line from usa, can't see it on amazon
I got a Bruder eye mask and I always inspect what I buy by smelling it. The chemicals in the mask burned my throat and I wondered what they would do to may eyes. I tried to wash out the chemicals but it didn't work. So, it is going in the trash.
hi from australia i just came across your channel very informative thank you
I've been wondering what to do for this instead of eye drops. Thanks for your videos
Let me know how it works out.
Oops I've lied down I think my cornea might be damaged
عند عملية المضغ في الأكل أشعر براحة في عيون الجافة.
does this reduce the amount of visible eye veins?
It's possible it could... if they eye veins are from possible dry eye/inflammation. But also consider, it could cause them to be worse, as the heat could cause the inflammation. Kind of tricky.
This guy's voice sounds just like Ryan Reynolds
What do you recommend when the warm compress makes eyes more dry and irritated? Do you try to do that once a week or something?????
Thank you doctor
You're welcome. 🙂
@DrEyeGuy - out of curiosity - are u a ophthalmologist? or real eye doctor?
