  • Simple and quick tip for opening art in Illustrator and finding that the art is created in CMYK colors. Now you need to change to a spot color in order to print to film. Quick and easy. No need to check your color to black when ready to print films.

Think of it like this. The custom spot color are just holding spots that do print out. You can name those anything you like. You can color (change the color value numbers) of a custom spot color "pink" that views as pink in your art file...and NAME it process black. Out in production, they will put process black in that screen because it is named process black. The same applies for a base white and a top white. You can color those any color...so that they show up on a white or transparent background or no back ground. Having said that, I do the following when I have multiple black elements that have come from various other files.
1, Create a custom color that is unique to all other colors in the file and name it CUSTOM Process Black.
2, Select a black element from the file, then in the menu bar, go to (SELECT, SAME, FILL COLOR). This will select every element in the fill that has that same color content.
3, Re-assign that color to the new CUSTOM Process Black (that shows as pink). This gives you the opportunity to visually see that every element is really assigned to (that one custom color). Repeat until you have every black element changed to that new CUSTOM Process Black that shows as pink. Do the same for any STROKES. SELECT SAME STROKE COLOR.
4, Once you have every black element assigned and showing as pink, you can either change the visual color makeup of that CUSTOM Process Black (that shows pink) and change that back to showing as black). This can remain as a custom color or ( select same fill color) again and you can now select the real process black (if) your file will be printing out in true cmyk.
