    Thanks for the tutorial. I really appreciate that you jumped right into it without drama and long intros. This is by far, the best tutorial on his topic. I will recommend it to many other people.

    I don't have to do this very often, so I always forget how to do it. I would like to thank you guys for re-teaching me how to do this every 6 to 9 months for the past few years, it's been invaluable!

    Your video is great thanks is direct and straight to the point I look at a lot of videos on color separation on here and either they talk too much and confuse you by doing too much and then you forget the steps or they just doing way too many other steps that are unnecessary. Thank you for being direct and straight to the point.

    Great tutorial for your clients... Im a beginning screen printer in my garage and was just curious how you would take this a step further for moving into printing films and what your typical procedure for that would look like?... I already know the very basics, but am still learning new ways to streamline the process, and also to know when its appropriate to trap or choke certain colors, or for that matter when to do butt registration instead (which I have not tried yet)... tips, suggestions?

    • @Merchenaries

      Hi Shaun! If you're interested, I actually have a tutorial series that goes over most of this on my channel.
      As for when to choke and trap, generally you'll always want to choke your white base, except when you have a white highlight on top. The white highlight and the white base should always be butt. Another thing you might not be aware of is not to print black over a white base.
      Trapping, in my experience in several large print shops, is an individual preference. I've worked with printers who insist on trapping certain colours and others who don't trap at all. Personally, I find it's not super necessary most of the time, but others will disagree.
      Hope that helps!

    why did you perform the command expand then you used the pathfinder selection? what did this do and how did it help with the overall goal of getting the artwork ready for production?

    • @SuperluxeFibers
      @SuperluxeFibers  10 років тому

      I expanded the art mainly to make the strokes dynamically scalable and so they print correctly. If you have a 1pt stroke and resize the art, the stroke stays at 1pt, but if the art is expanded it will scale proportionally.
      I like to use the pathfinder to flatten the art so I can cleanly recolor the art into spot colors for my separations. If we have layered colors sometimes that makes it more difficult to see the spot color changes as we make them.

    • @jonpitt199

      +Ricky Wilbon This sometimes happens if you have stroke in the foreground and not fill. Try hitting the X key bringing the fill to the foreground and see if that makes the save swatch function available.

    • @Merchenaries
      @Merchenaries 7 років тому

      Hi Fermz! I'm sure you've figured this out already but you can print your films from the print dialog in Illustrator by going to "Output", then changing the "Mode" to "Separations". Just make sure you check the preview of the colours below in the Document Ink Options for any stray CMYK data that may still be left in your artwork.

    when i bring up the separations preview, nothing is shown below. why is this

    • @SuperluxeFibers
      @SuperluxeFibers  10 років тому +2

      Typically the reason nothing shows is you are in "RGB color" mode and you need to be in "CMYK color" mode. You can go to the File Menu and scroll to the bottom and switch the "Document Color Mode" to "CMYK".
      File>DocumentColorMode>CMYKcolor
      Cheers,

    What would be the purpose of converting them to pantone like that?

    • @Merchenaries
      @Merchenaries 7 років тому +2

      Pantones (in theory) are always mixed the same way. They should be consistent from shop to shop, so if this client needed to print shirts on the other side of the country, (like if they were on tour or something), technically using Pantones should ensure that they print will look the same. Hope that helps!

    • @janojankins
      @janojankins 6 років тому

      Pantone are also cheaper in the long run. Unless you have a client like Ikea with their blue. Or Disney's Mickey mouse red. You won't need a special premix made.

  • @tjchan77
    @tjchan77 9 років тому

    Hi thanks for sharing. I'm quite confused between spot color, process color and Pantone color. When you're saving colors of your artwork as new swatches, you simply changed color type from process to spot color on the new swatch window. Does it mean that we can use any color and change the color type to spot color as you demonstrated here?

    • @Merchenaries
      @Merchenaries 7 років тому +1

      I always say to just go with Pantones. Some print shops use Pantones exclusively, and others use brand name spot colours that come premixed, but they can usually get pretty close to a Pantone. If you make up a colour, you run the risk of not knowing how to get that same colour at a different shop, or even the same colour the next time you print. Pantones are supposed to be the exact same everytime they are printed.

    The video starts with a selection of the vector art. You can either click Command A or go to Select in the top Illustrator Navigation menu and choose ALL.
