the simple explanation for how death note and inuyasha were dominant for so long is that those two are just as popular with women as with guys. thus doubling the potential audiance. all the most popular anime in the list just had broader appeal.
interesting observation. also im surprised vampire knight & maid sama made it on the list. i assume they were pretty popular with guys too then? (like nana & sailor moon)

that shit is nuts, Haruhi and Sakura was having an underground 10 year war and we didnt even know about it. Really surprise a 2 season anime held strong for that many years vs the most popular anime in the world
@@lc9245 Mainstream shonen is def the most popular. As much as I liked Haruhi back in the day, it also introduced having the same "moe" style face for every popular female anime character.
Haruhi was the main reason these "waifu" wars started. The show had only a handful of episodes, but it literally created a religion around a character. Sakura is just a generations classmate that never talked to you. Every weeb felt like naruto pining for sakura, who didn't give them the time of day, and due to Narutos many seasons and long running nature, she has a mass of fame behind her/her name. Haruhi on the other hand, was basically that next door neighbor girl that made every weebs dreams come true as the center of the universe. At the time she had only been around for 12 episodes or so... but god damn... that show changed everything, and many of the waifus since were derivatives of her art and style. Not to mention the way anime itself was drawn. The world god only knows.
It’s just funny because the top waifu was constantly the one I enjoyed as I got older by the year in the early 2000’s 🤣 a lot of people grew up watching anime so i feel like those are the majority rule, liked whatever waifu was most shown/mc’s love interest

Ofc they are also different genres of anime
Death Note is a fucking monster, it ended with 39 episodes in 2006 and stayed relevant on the list to this very day. Literally nothing on the list is even similar
@@delete_gaming the ending was mid, I will agree the start to mid point of the anime was good. When the other investigators got involved it ruined the whole anime
For anyone wondering about Zero Two, it was also around this time of her popularity she was in that Vietnamese music meme. As for Pokémon being high in 2020, that was also the year that Ash won the Alola league.
Suzumiya Haruhi is actually on a wrong list, she should be on the most popular cult list. When Haruhi appeared in 2007, the show and story itself is so out there that it literally almost created a whole religion, but the 2nd season jumped the shark in the most meta way possible that only this show itself could have caused. This is the first anime to go so viral, people would do flash mobs all over the world to dance to its ending theme, it was the OG anime dance. And people would identify themselves as Haruhiists, worshipers of the character. It was an anime that became too powerful too fast and burnt itself out.
I liked Naruto, I don't really understand the hate. I didn't watched it "in order" tho, I just watched whatever was on tv, but it was fun. Same with DBZ, Pokemon and YuGiOh.
A pure search-based ranking in modern day is probably a better indicator of waifu quality than a search-based ranking in the 2000's because only a handful of shounen anime made it over to western culture, which is why you see Sakura dominate despite being so mid. There were definitely waifus that way outshined Sakura, but that was only accessible for the turbo weebs. If all the anime in the 2000's aired in the 2020's in the same order, this rankign would be so vastly different. Even the most popular cult-following anime of the 2000's like TTGL, FLCL, Haruhi, Spice and Wolf, etc only got a tiny fraction of the global audience that mildly-popular shows get now.
Sword Art Online and Attack on Titan made anime so popular, i remember being so suprised seeing so many people getting into anime back then, especially big personalities. Then now with the Netfix anime boom it's just completely mainstream these days lmao
I remember when I was an ultra weeb back when it was lame to be into anime that wasnt naruto or dragonball. Now I dont watch anime anymore and it's cool to be a weeb. Life truly is ironic lmao
It's an endless cycle of people being into something that isn't mainstream and getting singled out for liking it, until suddenly people realize why they were passionate about it in the first place and it goes mainstream. Can you imagine if society flipped on its head and sports fans got picked on for liking to watch a ball/puck/whatever zoom around a field/arena for hours? So many people can't just be happy for someone enjoying something and expressing how passionate about it they are lol.

At first I didn't like her, but overtime I grew to put her on the upper tiers maybe from how long of a run DB had on tv back then and how much the character grew over the years, I believe she even started in her mid to late teens so there's quite a separation from back then to the bulma that traveled to namek to the mom she became in later stages of the show.

Asmongold, 'One Piece' is definitely worth the watch. It has its ups and downs, but that story is really incredible. If you can't watch the show then I recommend the manga. It's too good a story to not experience. If you do tackle the show then just pace yourself and watch a few episodes a week. You'll eventually catch up. The whole planting a tree analogy and all.
I've watched it all and wouldnt recommend it. It's overhyped with terrible pacing. From the whole main group, only luffy is fun to watch while the rest is predictable and boring
i never like the pedophile argument for underage anime girls, for the same reason i don't like whenever media tries to blame violent video games for murders being committed, we all would be laughing in the face of someone who says "if you enjoy playing GTA 5, you are a murdering psychopath" we would all be telling him "bro chill... its just a fucking game"
i feel like the only 2 different factors between these 2 and why people feel uncomfortable with one and not the other, is 1. the sexual implications of one of them VS the other, and 2. the fact that as we see from this video, anime culture only started gaining speed in our western civilization since the early 2000s and only really started becoming a phenomenon in late 2010s, where as something like violent video games have been around since the first ever mortal kombat when gaming went through their first controversy.
As much as I'm a fan of it, Suzumiya Haruhi probably gets a very artificial boost from the fact that it's what you'd search for if you were looking for the anime/light novel/manga etc.

the simple explanation for how death note and inuyasha were dominant for so long is that those two are just as popular with women as with guys. thus doubling the potential audiance. all the most popular anime in the list just had broader appeal.

Both of them were popular but for different reasons. One was beloved by the masses while the other one was despised and hated.
I love how Zack rates his waifus based on their raiding ability

Naruto was personally a fun show for me growing up so that was nice to see Sakura high up there. I know most people wouldn't agree.
I liked Naruto, I don't really understand the hate. I didn't watched it "in order" tho, I just watched whatever was on tv, but it was fun. Same with DBZ, Pokemon and YuGiOh.
That the anime that what killed sakura character especially fillers read the manga the art is amazing
Don't know most of the newer ones but I'm glad Faye, Yoruichi and Erza were in the spotlight for quite some time.
Then now with the Netfix anime boom it's just completely mainstream these days lmao

these are google search results from any man and his dog eg 99% of the results are people who know nothing about anime, so they search what the see on tv, news, advertisements and what the kids are watching on TV eg = not most the good stuff as its to spicy/violent for kids.
so u end up with someone like Sakura, who purely because she is the only main female character for most of the anime next to the main character Naruto himself = top searched, meanwhile she was extremely disliked by the anime fans for her unlikable personality, which doesnt really get any better even after it changes when she grows up, just goes from bad to another bad and well she didnt look all that hot either... hence when u see folks who spend thousands on figurines, "sakura" is like the weres wally of figurines, she only shows up if folks collect every character, regardless if they like them or not, simply to complete the set... meanwhile virtually every figurine you see virtually every hardcore collector/weeb putting on showcase = none of those ranking up in the search results.

i feel like the only 2 different factors between these 2 and why people feel uncomfortable with one and not the other, is 1. the sexual implications of one of them VS the other, and 2. the fact that as we see from this video, anime culture only started gaining speed in our western civilization since the early 2000s and only really started becoming a phenomenon in late 2010s, where as something like violent video games have been around since the first ever mortal kombat when gaming went through their first controversy.
