Aha! The collection grows. Major kudos for taking on that kind of project. I like the approach of putting it together before finishing and that tone is worth all the soldering which is a PITA no matter how good you are at it. My vote is the same color as the strat with the mint pick guard. Kind of a set type of thing. Looking forward to Pt. 2.
Btad Laue haha I know, I’m up to 5 now and I didn’t mean to be, I still have a little more soldering with the new pots and switch bits that’s it, it does already play good and sound good so I’m looking forward to setting it up (in the middle of adding the finish to the body, 4 coats should do it 👍)
Nicely done, Derek! Looking forward to the next part! For color suggestions, i'd say maybe surf green, sonic blue or the more traditional natural. Will you put a headstock decal on it or something? It'd be funny to put "Derek Paul" with the "Les Paul" font on it lol. Or maybe save it for a Les Paul kit build in the future?
Garret Asonza thanks Garret! I appreciate that, love the colour suggestions, I was also thinking a more natural ish finish and funny you should say that, I was thinking a Derek Paul logo on the headstock but love the idea of the Gibson font, that would be hilarious!
Do you mean the soldering in general Charlie? If so add a little solder to the irons hot tip to start then put the soldering iron tip on the wire to be soldered and add the solder, the solder will start to melt into the wire, cheers!
Do you know of any good tutorials when soldering wires? I've never done it before. Also would it be fine to leave a guitar unfinished? Like just leave it unstained and unpainted
Turtle hmmm I reckon there are some good ones out there, I think Brian Wampler or Phillip McKnight have soldering tutorials, and I don’t see why not to leaving it unfinished, I just suppose you have to be aware of humidity changes in your area :)) cheers for the comment
Hi there mate, out of curiousity, did you use the diagram that came with the guitar or did you find one, and would you mind linking it if you still have access, many thanks, and great video
@Stephen Langenmayr Hi Stephen, it could be a number of things, so i'd check: that you have all the ground wires connected correctly (routed correctly also, it's worth taking your time to make sure this is right) and securely (in the second part of the video i also added copper tape throughout the guitar, this will also help) if i can help any further then let me know, i had buzz initially too until i checked my wiring and added the copper shielding tape, the reason it doesn’t buzz when you play a string is because your hand is acting as a ground, cheers
I appreciate the honest commentary on how this went for everyday people like me with everyday soldering skills etc. Really helpful.
Thank you Bryce! I’m a complete novice at this and if I can do it anyone can! Especially with hand tools, I’m glad you enjoyed it cheers
I just put together my first...
Coffee table,couch...
Thinking of buying same...thanks for the great video!!
Thanks man! Go for it, it was a great thing to do and I still use it!

mine just arrived today!
Fantastic! What you thinking of doing? Staining, paint? :)
Well done man!
Really interesting to see, and I look forward to see how it turns out once it's done :)
Thanks man! i'm just in the middle of shaping everything up ready for part 2 (there's a lot of sanding and finishing) worth it though :)
Been looking for a 6-saddle bridge that feeds from the back like that. Can only find bridges that feed from underneath.
Might be worth checking thefretwire.com as they have parts on there too, cheers

I have always wanted to try pine
Thats a good shout! thanks

Emin Bastea got to love a paddle headstock! in part 2 I’ll shape it and make it look less like the end of hockey stick :))
Building?? Eres un montador de guitarras ya hechas, no construyes nada
It does say from a kit in the title
