I've always wanted a blue guitar, so I built one (with Madinter wood only)

- This was my plan B for the Great Guitar Build Off 2021, in case the One Piece build went wrong.
But it didn't, ... so now the "B" stands for blue (thank you @CranmerGuitars for the name suggestion).
Lots of first times with this build:
- first time using veneer (quilted maple veneer from @madinterwoodformusic ) and first time using a veneer press (using a skateboard veneer vacuum bag from Roarockit)
- first time using wood that was dried, selected and milled for guitar building, and not staircases, decking, furniture and what not (all timbers are from Madinter.com , and that's ash, flamed maple, and rosewood). Not having to dimension the rough sawn wood by myself was very enjoyable and I'm gonna have a hard time going back to the jointer/planer and table saw.
- first time using stains (SuStain from tlcguitargoods.com) and not leaving the natural color of the wood
Specs
- Body: 3-piece swamp ash, stained quilted maple veneer top, tortoise binding
- Neck: flamed maple, stained with vintage brown SuStain
- Fretboard: rosewood, 12,5 " radius, flamed maple block inlay
- 24 frets, Dunlop 6140
- Schaller hardware & locking tuners
- Switchcraft electronics, 1 tone 1 volume
- Seymour Duncan phat cat P90 (humbucker sized)
- Finish: tru oil
----------
Gears used for the demos
Strymon Iridium (Fender channel for the clean sounds, Vox channel for the last clip), Fender Pugilist Distorsion and Ibanez Tubescreamer overdrive, Tc Electronic Hypergravity compressor (only in the last clip, Devin Townsend toneprint), Strymon BigSky reverb, Tc electronic Flashback delay. Recorded directly into a Steinberg UR44, inside Logic, with no EQ or any editing.

Thanks for watching and see you at the next guitar build (I'm building a Les Paul).
Also, I'll start a Red Special build at 100K subs :)
You can find more of my past and upcoming shenanigans at / tchiksguitars
*R E D S P E C I A L* announcement:
I'll start a Red Special Build as soon as the channel reaches 100K, but don't rush, I need to finish that Les Paul first :)
You can follow the weekly progression of the Les Paul here: instagram.com/tchiksguitars/ (Also I put a couple more sound clips of the blue guitar over there, with the drive from the Strymon Iridium + (mini)Tubescreamer instead of the Fender Pugilist you can here in this video).
Have a great day !
Bisous,
tchiks
Can you do led light on fretboard?
I don't know I've never tried. I can't change a lightbulb without fearing for my life, that goes to show the extend of my knowledge in electricity.
How did you print the guitar paper?
@@jackmehoff3673 j'y suis déjà :) j'apprends passivement des trucs par ci par là
some day your daughter will build her first guitar and u will be a proud papa!
Most likely :)
And then SHE will be the one qui va poncer TON dessin :-D :-D
I am pretty sure he is already a proud papa.
@@oqsy probably
No kids for me please.
It’s nice seeing somebody build a guitar that actually has a nice shape to it but still being completely unique
Thanks !
This guy’s a beast for building a great guitar in less than 20 minutes
Gorgeous looking guitar and your little girl's reaction to sanding out her art was priceless :)
she REALLY was upset :p
@@tchiksguitars Haha it seems that you misled her on what les règles du jeu were.
why did you remove the art work that was a masterpiece
"Honey why are you crying?"
"It's tears of joy SHARON!"
"What's going on?"
*"tchiks guitars uploaded a video!"*
Ahahahahhaa
SHARON YOU WOULDNT GET IT
"OoOoOooh, c'est joli!" Had me giggling. What a wee star.
haha, she sounded like an old nice lady
The tortoiseshell binding went better with the blue top than I might have expected-a surprisingly nice combination.
I also appreciated the “Five Stages of Carving a Volute”
Ahaha.
My thinking behind the tortoise binding, I'll admit, was to recreate the teal and orange combination people are after in photo/videography. I think it came out nice but I'm biased :)
@@tchiksguitars It came out stunning!
Yes, Michael that was interesting to me as well. It made a lot of sense.
Having your daughter help you at times is adorable. You do fantastic work and every guitar I have watched you build is great looking and they sound great as well. This one is no exception great guitar.
Thank you for watching them !
I am not a luthier, I just play them, but man, mad respect to you. It looks like a tremendous amount of work and love goes into your guitars. Even though I don't own one of them, thanks for spending time making them great.
Thank you ! Maybe someday you'll build one :)
it's overwhelming how you let your daughter be part of the building process. I think she is a lucky girl and you are a lucky father. Thank you so much for sharing this!
Yes I feel very lucky that she enjoys it :)
Absolute build perfection and what an amazing apprentice you have. Thank you for letting us glimpse into your world, it had a peaceful, calming feeling.
Thank you !
Best comment ever! Totally reflecting my feelings
Beautifully done!! And teaching that lovely girl of yours how to do it right at such a young age is priceless! Thank you for the video and tutorial on guitar building and how to lovingly raise a child.
Thank you ! I'll keep doing my job as a father :)
Ohh man I love your videos. Soooo calming, so Full of inspiration, so motivating.
Keep going!
These videos have actually helped me a lot when it comes to figuring out how to build my own guitar. I’ve been working on it for over three years now, so it’s relieving to know that I’ll be able to do the neck semi easily once I have the correct tools to do so. Keep up the incredible work!
when your wife banned you from buying another guitar
It’s been a very challenging week and this video brought me a lot of comfort and a moment to just enjoy a great build. Thanks. I appreciate it. Looking forward to the next one.
thank you so much, I really get the feeling, I also watch soothing videos after a week of stress :) means a lot to me, thanks again!
This guitar looks absolutely beautiful. Amazing to see it coming together.
Thanks !
Beautiful, I felt your passion and the build was near perfection. Bravo!
Pouahhhhh, au fils du temps vos guitares deviennent de plus en plus incroyables, un travail plus qu'admirable !
Ho merci !!
@@tchiksguitars avec plaisir ! c'est vraiment top ;)
Another amazing build my friend! As always, your humour and little family moments really make your videos so much fun too 😊
Thank you !
U got me in "and it's blue" 😂
I'm starting to talk like my daughter that's why :)
Another amazing guitar build!!
Always a pleasure to see your little helper putting her touch on her father's masterpiece!! Thanks for sharing the love my brother 🙏
Thank you !!
It is truly an honor and a privilege to watch a master at his craft. Thank you Misour
You’re such an inspiration. I had always wanted to make my own guitar and now, thanks to your tele build videos, I’ve finally started.
I can’t wait for your next build…. I think I know what it is😁
Good luck and have fun with your build ! People have sent me their builds on Instagram, they're amazing and I know yours will be good too
Well done! Having made a few solid body guitars myself, I can appreciate all of the work that you put into your amazing guitars! Love how you constructed that scarf joint! Also, adding that edge binding was a nice touch! Great work & great sounding guitar! Looking forward to your next build... 🎸🎸👍👍
Thank you sapele Steve :) my next build is part sapele again !
Awesome work, yet again.
Also the bits with your daughter's involvement, priceless.
Congratulations! A real jewel! Special mention for the colour! Just beautiful!
Beautiful, an absolute work of art.👌🏻
thanks!
I’m starting a bass build today! Thanks for the ‘how to build a guitar’ tutorial! It will be super helpful!!
Woohoo ! If it's a P or PJ bass, it's more or less the same as a tele :)
SAME !
AND I'M GONNA MAKE PROTOTYPES FOR A NEW INVENTION !!
@@tchiksguitars it’s a pj bass!
That's a beautiful guitar you made. You got a nice touch. Your playing also sounds great ❤
Love that your daughter is helping, so touching!
I was literally watching one of your other videos when this came!!
Haha enjoy !
- "Ca veut dire quoi 'poncer' ?"
- "Ca veut dire qu'on va enlever ton dessin.."
- "HEIN ?!?"
Ahahahah
Excellent boulot au passage, comme d'habitude
Ce manche flammé 'roasted', ce frettage sorti des enfers.. Magnifique
Haha, cette furie
My absolute favourite of your builds so far. One of the most stunning finishes ive ever seen i dream of one day building a blue jazz bass for myself and the turqoise binding is definetley going to be part of it.
Beautiful, simply beautiful! When played clean that guitar has such such a hollow body tone. Yet with lots of gain it is very even and smooth. The laser work for the make and back of headstock information adds a nice touch. You pick the right pickups and hardware. So many fine details I could go on and on. Thanks for sharing!!
Wow thank you for your detailed compliment :)
@@tchiksguitars
You’re quite welcome.
I admit, I was looking forward to hearing the riff most of all :D it's a beautiful guitar.
Yeah I thought of you guys when I recorded it. " Must - not - disappoint "
Incredible build! That blue looks so good. Glad to see you went with the Pugilist distortion too. you'll have to let me know what you think!
I simply love that distorsion. The blend mode is amazing because it gives me the opportunity to have a saturated sound mixed with a second tone having a more defined sound with a distinct attack. As with every distorsion pedal it has its limitation I guess but I'm very happy with this purchase !
Thanks for such an awesome and inspiring video, guitars looks amazing and sounds the part!
Beautiful video, beautiful family, beautiful guitar. You're succeeding at life!
You have given me so much inspiration and motivation to finally start my own guitar! I will be starting on it sometime in the following weeks.
Your videos are always so calming, insightful, engaging, and its adorable when your daughter comes to help.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks ! One day she'll get to old and stop being cute. That's why I also have a son
@@tchiksguitars I hope one day I have a daughter that I can build with!
fantastic as always and I might have to steal that teal and tortoise shell combination.
Just wondering if you had any reccomendations as to the body carve on a hollowbody build. In your shelf guitar video I noticed you drilled depth holes on one side and routed the other, was there a specific reason for this or was it just experimentation, in which case, which would you reccomend?
Cheers mate, can't wait for that next build!!
It's hard to explain because of the way I edited the montage but basically I tried both methods, one on each plate (for the face side at least). For the inner side you just HAVE to drill depth stops :)
I love you let your daughter help. Reminds me of when my daughter was so much younger and wanted to be involved with everything I did. I loved her interest and wanting to learn.
Beautiful work .. That stain is incredible ... good to see the kids getting involved too!!
Unbelievable talent as always! Blown away every time I watch your latest build video. looking forward to seeing that (I think ; ) ) LP!
Thanks! Yes it is ...that :)
Just love the guitar. Laser etching - way cool. Color is perfect!
What a dream it would be to be able to do that. I spent too much time playing. I started as a drummer . Then I had to learn how to play. I could feel the instrument before actually learning how to play. It took over my thoughts for years. But this! ! Amazing. And there’s no doubt of your love for the instrument! thanks. Rock on
It is wonderful to see you let your daughter be involved. Those will be the memories the both you will keep forever. The best gift from a papa to his child.
I hope she remembers :)
Whoa! That is one beautiful guitar right there. Looking forward to next build.
C'est toujours aussi bien que ce soit la vidéo, l'ambiance rendu au montage, l'instrument (magnifique...MAGNIFIQUE !!!) avec en plus une sérénité et un apaisement très méditatif. Encore bravo et encore merci !!!
Merci !
Man that is so beautiful! I love everything about the visuals of this guitar, you've completed another fine build. Your playing examples at the end are great too, the P90's are awesome.
So nice to see you work together with your daughter like that. She's going to have so many great memories working together with you :-)
Rock on!
Thanks ! I have a special project coming up with her :)
Everything about this video is absolute perfection. You are a true artist in many ways!
Thanks !
Wow ... amazing handwork and a beautiful result ... really love the look of this guitar !!
Thank you !
That was a brilliant idea to use the dowels to hold together the scarf joint, during glue-up, so it wouldn't slide around when getting clamped. That part gets cut out, anyway, as the build goes on.
yes indeed, I had tested it on my ukulele and it worked wonders
As well as a drop dead gorgeous instrument it also sounds incredible. Such a warm pleasing tone even completely dry. Beautiful!
Thanks ! I love that tone too :)
Beautiful! Love seeing kids in the shop! Tones are amazing!
thank you! Warms my heart that you say that, I love the sound on this guitar
Beautiful, from start to finish!
EVERY TIME I watch one of your videos I see so much cool, simple shit that I'm shocked I didn't think of. I just did my first laminate neck-through glue-up last night and spread the glue around with a plastic scraper, which works fine, but left a bunch dripping over the edges. I see you using a roller and I'm smacking my forehead with my palm! SO SIMPLE!
Oh man, I love watching your builds. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching !
Stunning finished product. Looks like a lot of work, but we'll worth it. Sounded great as well, you are a true craftsman. Also love that you got your daughter involved. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much :)
OMG.....Another masterpiece growing before my eyes.....It turned out both beautiful looking and sounding....I look forward to your next masterpiece....and as usual it was nice to see you kept 'The Boss' on the job to keep you in line..... 😃
Haha. The boss is growing up, she'll take over the channel soon
One of the best guitars I've ever seen!! You sir are a great craftsman and dad! Congrats.
Thanks !
Tchiks videos are always good. The videography is amazing, and I love the pure sound of woodworking.
Thank you !
That trick with the headstock just blew my mind. I was like "How is that gonna OOOHHHH..."

I’ve always wanted a blue guitar too ! This was an incredible video , you ‘re not only a master builder but your’re a master player also, as an amateur luthier/ woodworker I appreciate the skill , patience involved , and that guitar sounded amazing , ok I guess I’ll look for your next build 👍
Awesome craftsmanship. Thanks for sharing 👍
some of the best man, great work
I think your a brilliant Luther and attention to detail is amazing very impressed mate
Thank you !
I agree about leaving the small carvings on the rear scoop intact. That would make the guitar unique.
Yus, should have done that :)
