LPL you are an inspiration as are all of the commenters on this page. You guys are so welcoming and supporting to new pickers like myself. Not once has anyone told me to go find something else to do for a past time. Everyone has been like "what can I do to help?". I really enjoy this series and I must say the video you did a while back explaining how you tension was VERY helpful. I just had to tell you how much I appreciate everything you do and how informative you're videos are. That goes for all of you guys and gals on here that read this. From the bottom of my heart, Thanks. Love this series!!!
Thanks for your kind words. I learned a great deal from others when I got started, so it's only right that I pay it forward. It's really a nice little community that we have in locksport.
It sure is. I pinned my first challenge lock yesterday, and I am working on another one today. I am an off-work ATM technician (shoulder injury), so I am getting to indulge the sport. I will try to film some today and maybe put a video up.
Finally started leaning around 5 pm today and just popped my fist padlock! I can now open it consistently in under 2 minutes. using my homemade hairpin picks! this is going to be fun!
Wow two locks picked and gutted in 8 minutes very impressive. This is a great series because we are able to see what there made of. And the way you judge them with the point system is pretty cool. Awesome video LPL. Thanks for sharing.
This video caused me to have an epiphany! Literally! Your discussion of the keyway (at 30 s) is what made lock picking finally click for me. Before this video, I struggled for 2 weeks with very little success. Two days later, I have picked 6 out of my 7 locks =)
I'd like to share some valuable information for anyone trying to pick these locks for themselves. For me, I bought a pack of six as practice locks, and for that they work excellently. 1. Your tension. Note that the core will turn just a small amount. Turn it until is seizes, then only *rest* your finger on the tension wrench. Apply no further tension. 2. Start picking from the back of the lock. I've taken three of these apart, and on all of them (inlcuding what LPL has), #5 is a serrated, where 4-1 are spools. Provided the lock binds on #5 first, set the serrated pin which will allow the lock to start false setting. 3. If it feels like all pins have been set, and none will budge any further, you may have it open and not realize it. The cores on these don't exactly fall over. I have a red example issued to me as a LOTO lock, and that particular one is difficult with the key, although I've never picked it. If you believe the core has been picked, gently remove your pick, MAINTAINING tension. Slide another, stiffer, tension wrench into the core and rotate. You may find it falls open at this point. Little did I realize that I had actually picked it open multiple times, only for the sticky mechanism to trick me into thinking I hadn't. 4. These locks are not key retaining. Use this to your advantage, assuming this is a practice lock for you. Use the key to open the shackle, and remove the key. Leave the shackle open, core in the 'locked' position. Pick it now. Since the locking mechanism has already been released, it is no longer applying pressure on the core, thus it will fall open when you have successfully picked it, allowing you to immediately learn that you have in fact successfully picked it. And finally, 5. Although this is more of a morale boost. It's very easy to get discouraged watching locks fall open for him, while you struggle with crap master locks. Keep something in mind, although it seems obvious. Everyone starts at the beginning. At one point, LPL, Bosnian bill, and Deviant all struggled like you are today. They honed their skills and perfected their craft. Everything they have done, you can do too. Just a reminder.
I watch bosnianbill and you sir very much. I'm no criminal by any means and do plan on becoming one. As I am a bluecollar guy I own a torch and grinder so bypassing a necessary lock can be accomplished relatively easy. Picking is more of a puzzle for a mechanical problem...."solving" that is a fun reward when the lock opens. I enjoy your videos and am novice compared to yours and bosnianbill's skill sets. It's an art and takes practice. Much respect and keep making videos please! Have a great day.
If I remember right the Chinese generic was rather impressive. Having a few of these type locks myself. When I saw the trouble you had with it and what it had I didn't think it was gonna be last. Can't wait to see the rest of this series.
I just picked a six pack of these I find that the pins really talk to you on this lock.First I put medium heavy tension on the core and get the heavy binders then light tension on the core and only pressure the pins that move my tension wrench or the core. Thanks nice picking man.
Another great video. I couldn't get hold of this model of master for my series :-( just don't get them in the uk and postage and threat of import duty makes buying from the US prohibitive. Had to settle for the 575DPF...
The screws aren't just tightly set. They have some locktite at on them, so the tightness is that seal. Master seems to have an MO of 4 spools and a light serration from the 6127 and 911s that I have picked and taken apart. They also seem to put them in the same place.
That'sbeen my experience as well on the pinning... though it's pretty common to run across one with all standard pins, when they when they should have spools. Weird!
Additionally I don't understand why their serrated pins are extremely shallow and only have two rings. I can't think of another instance where serrations have been done like that.
I wish Master would take note of this vid, maybe they would change their thinking then😩😩 I did think that you may have given a bonus point to any of the locks that contained an anti-bypass waffer in the mechanism as well🤔🤔 Another nice video sir👍👍
Thanks. TO be fair, the pick resistance of this lock is well-balanced to the physical security. They both are low. As for the bypass wafer, no need for one in these locks. The actuator is oriented such that it can't be accessed. THis is one way in which the master product is superior to the American Lock design.
The pro series are a lot of fun. Flipped my boss out once. Web site says 6230 model is 'virtually unpickable'. Ok I'll rent that. Let me see it, 13 seconds! I've always used bkt and 25 standard with all masters.
Oddly enough, I have two Master Locks in my collection that share the "virtually unpickable" label, yet came from the factory with all standard pins... a 930 and a 6321. Both of them are supposed to come with spools. Very strange.
Very enjoyable and interesting as always. Master behind Chinese generic - I'm very curious to see the performance of the other locks. Great picking also ;-)
The Yellow one is actually made at American ... Note the tell-tale, squared off body, the "K" designation on the retainer plate and the Philips style retaining screw.
Great job yet again, not surprised the Master lost to the Chinese after the seeing it, but by that much!!!! Really looking forward to the rest of them, should be fun.
Great videos, it's nice to see people taking their time to do a profecional product on youtube, keep them caming!!! Do you have any special lock to secure a bike? Thanks.
Thanks. Personally, I use an Abus 37/80 and a 12mm security chain to lock up my bike. There is some irony in the fact that the lock and chain are worth more than the bike!
Nice picking! The results didn't really surprise me much. Master lock, while popular, just doesn't seem to want to put the money into making better locks.
the real problem with master lock is they are sold everywhere and have a massive marketing budget, they basically don't have significant competition. they don't need to make real locks since they sell by brand name alone.
The key way and internals remind me of lock 583, the shrouded Ace, it was also pinned using 5 of 6. I wonder if the same plant in China made them. Edit: I've never seen the 40MM video series, I see that all these locks are built the same.
i think master has lost its mojoeman .but thay are probably #1in sales even over the Chinese locks sold in AMERICA. im not sure about that but i assume. but people are looking to protect there stuff will by AMERICAN. so is what im.trying to say is it a name thats been here for a long time and we buy for the name recognizes and 1-10 security writen on the package. what a away to show difference in locks great Video thanks.😎😎
Well, to be fair, picking is not a huge threat, and there are some Master Locks that guard quite well against physical attacks that are the statistically more probable threat. That said, with just a little effort, they really could improve their product dramatically. As for representations made by Master Lock (such as the security scale), don't get me started.
why does master lock bother with making a core capable of being a 6 pin core if they are going to only put in 5 pins??? it makes no sense at all!! if you are going to make a 6 pin core, put 6 pins in the core.... Harry you should repin those to full 6 pins and make them challenge locks.
Same reason Lockwood, Abus, American and a host of others do it; cost. Why go through the cost of making two cores when you only have to make one? It makes economic sense. The extra pin would be nice though.
I have a ton of these locks at work and have a million different keys bc all locks have different keys. I want to make all my locks key the same. How can I do this with these locks? And have just one key?

Darrell Nicholas Let me know if you start posting videos, and take care of that shoulder!
LockPickingLawyer will do on both counts
Finally started leaning around 5 pm today and just popped my fist padlock! I can now open it consistently in under 2 minutes. using my homemade hairpin picks! this is going to be fun!
Would love to hear if yo ever progressed this :)
It's interesting to see how LPL has improved both his presentation and his picking skills over the years since this video was uploaded.

Thanks, and I agree. I liken picking to trying to solve a puzzle inside a box using chopsticks.
If I remember right the Chinese generic was rather impressive. Having a few of these type locks myself. When I saw the trouble you had with it and what it had I didn't think it was gonna be last. Can't wait to see the rest of this series.
Yup, the little Chinese one put up more of a fight than I would have expected... pretty impressive, considering.
I just picked a six pack of these I find that the pins really talk to you on this lock.First I put medium heavy tension on the core and get the heavy binders then light tension on the core and only pressure the pins that move my tension wrench or the core. Thanks nice picking man.

Great series so far . Funny how the Chinese lock is doing better than the master locks lol thanks for sharing!

Results are getting interesting already.
I think so also.

Master should go into body manufacturing. They get that right, I'll give them credit for that. Leave the core to someone else.
Thank you! Wonderfully produced video!!
Very enjoyable and interesting as always. Master behind Chinese generic - I'm very curious to see the performance of the other locks. Great picking also ;-)
Thanks... more to come soon.

Thanks. THe Chinese one held up nicely... good keyway, a few security pins, and the spring tension on the core add up to a nice pick.
Pete Restall I have the yellow one if you want me to hold it aside.
Randy Perkins Don't bother. I have one packed up for him already. :-)
Great videos, it's nice to see people taking their time to do a profecional product on youtube, keep them caming!!!

excellent ! 2 locks in one vid
THanks.
Nice picking! The results didn't really surprise me much. Master lock, while popular, just doesn't seem to want to put the money into making better locks.
Thanks, but to be fair, these were not difficult. Spools + open keyway is not a recipe for pick resistance IMO.
Why would they? Their shite sells as it is. The sooner consumers stop buying crap - the sooner the peddlers of crap will get their act together.
the real problem with master lock is they are sold everywhere and have a massive marketing budget, they basically don't have significant competition. they don't need to make real locks since they sell by brand name alone.
+bird718 Bit like Apple then...
LockPickingLawyer Eh it might stop raking and other low skill methods of entry
"A really tight screw" had me thinking this was a 4/1 video LOL.
Man you make this look too easy. Takes me forever to get these picked...
The key way and internals remind me of lock 583, the shrouded Ace, it was also pinned using 5 of 6. I wonder if the same plant in China made them.

love it
great pick
THanks.
Are all these 40mm aluminum locks engineered to meet some kind of standard? They're all so similar.
Face in the reflection on this one LPL
Harry are those 5 pin or 6 pin cores? I have seen some 5 pin master locks but not so much of 6 pin.
Cores are right there. Count the holes. :) 6
6 pin cores, that are only populated with 5 pins.
how does spools work other than standard driver pins? i am not a locksmith kind regards
why does master lock bother with making a core capable of being a 6 pin core if they are going to only put in 5 pins??? it makes no sense at all!! if you are going to make a 6 pin core, put 6 pins in the core.... Harry you should repin those to full 6 pins and make them challenge locks.

Noctis is correct... Master only needs to have one production line, but charges more for fully pinning up the lock.
How do I buy a bunch of these 6 pin cylinders? I've searched around can't find em. Need something to put in my vice and empty AL 1100
Can does locks be picked a different way besides spp?
i prefer the Proseries over the new one
I don't understand. They are both pro series... the green one is just an updated model.
I have a ton of these locks at work and have a million different keys bc all locks have different keys. I want to make all my locks key the same. How can I do this with these locks? And have just one key?
Watch helpfullockpicker video #44
hey, i have a question maybe someone could answer about this lock, can it be opened with a comb tool?
Maybe, but it would take a VERY thin tool... thinner than any that is commercially available.
Dude the bitting is so easy on his mine is all fucked up I should send you my lock lockpicking lawyer
Chinese generic lock : 8 points
master lock : 5 points
what?????!!!!!
Yup... and while one might argue that my point system is arbitrary (and it is, to an extent), the Chinese lock really was a more difficult pick.
I'm watching this video cause I have the same lock just wanted to practice on it but he picked it in 30 sec not t-bag
Yet master lock calls these "unlockable" laughable
