Interesting as how some of your points here kinda applies to some of the Gundam series outside of U.C. timelines as well! Namely: Mobile Fighter G Gundam, MSG00, and Iron-blooded Orphans. You are what you wear!
Your point about Lalah not having any body language ties into her piloting the Elmeth; since it's completely controlled by the pilot's thoughts and its only weapons are drone swarms, she remains a static, ethereal figure even when in a life-or-death battle.
The world needs more people talking about Mecha as Bodies. Thank you for this fascinating, fresh read on Gundam's Mobile Suits (God, it sounds so obvious in hindsight) and newtypism.
honestly amazing video, especially the direct throughline between newtypism and transhumanism. very worth noting that in zeta and beyond, the introduction of cyber-newtypes presents an ironic abuse of that evolution that mirrors how traditional transhumanist ideas are presented in dystopian settings. wish more (or really any other) gundam videos were in this vein.
Loved this! That first sequence of the show especially gives this sense of the suits being bodies; there's nothing natural given to establish the size of the Zakus until they get inside colony and one of the pilots steps out. Up until that point, they seem more like body armor with the natural way they move. I thought of it as just a gnarly way of messing with scale, but it's really interesting to think of how it establishes the connection between mobile suits and bodies right off the bat.
Wow, this analysis is truly mind blowing!! am a huge gundam fan from india and i recently finished watching majority of universal century, never thought in this perspective, as gundam as body and dress, its truly intresting connection, also the show portrays a lot philosophical and mystical ideas about human evolution through new type concept, also i realized they purposely made lala's charecter of indian origin to explore new type concept because india is a land of mystesism and spirituality!!
first of all, brilliant. but second it's a disability accessibility issue to have information as text on screen that you don't also say aloud. specifically the quotes and chapter titles you have. it's something I don't expect people to know inherently but it's worth keeping in mind for the future. and third really it's brilliant
Fantastic video! I've been thinking about the sort of body horror intrinsic in mecha anime for a while now, the whole idea of a body beyond the body. Easily my favorite thing about the genre.
Nice analyze ! Would Recommend Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta, some of its MSs are being designed a fashion designer Mamoru Nagano and have a really distinctive and non mecha like design ! In a way transformable mobile suit(frequently featured in Zeta) is also a form of functional clothing!
I’ve never seen any Gundam but some elements of what you’re showing make me really interested in watching the emotional aspects of the show. Thanks for the spoiler warning
Gundam dive deep into the psyche of the protag, Amuro Ray, which very notable for a giant robot anime from the 70s which are supposed to target young kids audience. It was revolutionary and that's why it left a lasting impact and became a mega franchise. Even Star Wars was not as nuanced as the Gundam 1979.
That was a really fascinating video that gave me a lot to think about. You highlighted a lot of things I hadn't scene, or recast a lot of things I had seen in a way that hadn't really occurred to me before this point. If nothing else I want to thank you for that, I will have to keep everything you said in mind for the future. I also appreciate that you repeatedly highlighted (in footage if not in narration) the scene in episode 20 where Amuro gets up and puts on his uniform. When I did a rewatch of Gundam 79 a little while ago that bit stood out as possibly one of the most important scenes in his character arc. 9 episodes of heavy lifting in the characterization department lead up to the moment of the protagonist getting dressed, and while you don't bring it up in particular you still absolutely killed it in getting at what it means, why it means, and why it's important. My cap is off to you. This was extremely good stuff.
This is a wonderful video! Thank you for sharing fashion theory with all of us! I would love to hear more on this with Zeta Gundam. Or everything else on the franchise! Or anything in general, like movies, gaming, etc! The point is, now I wanna know more about fashion theory and I'd love to hear more of your input! On top of that, you've actually made the concept of Newtypes interesting to me. Whereas I always thought they were a narrative crutch to the franchise, I now have to rethink everything about it when rewatching. I look forward to see more of your work, if you so choose to make more!
I recently finished 0079 and I've been hungering for video essays about it, and this one has really been an absolute joy to watch. Thank you so much for making it.
The whole mecha as dress/feels is an immensely interesting topic and I am happy to see people talk about it from their own perspectives. My first gundam was G and I think the same applies
Got recommended on this video. Shame it was striked but the point is, this helps me a bit on the story I'm working on it. Though I still need more research and reference.
This is an absolutely incredible video! Since first watching 0079, gundam's themes of transhumanism and newtypes have always struck me as a reflection of societal 'others' (especially in an LGBT sense), and the way you describe Lalah is like you took the thoughts out of my mind and said them better. I've never looked at newtypes from this lens, and it's intensely thought provoking. Awesome job!!!!
This is a fascinating video! You've gotten me into the mood for a review of Gundam Wing's 19th century future retro military fashion sense! I'd really want you to take a look at Lucrezia Noin and Treize Khushrenada; oh and don't forget about Zechs Merquis's knee length boots! This aspect of Gundam Wing is so UNDERDISCUSSED! I'd really like to know exactly which original military uniforms were they derived from! Cheers!
I was expecting more about the clothing choices they have chosen, rather than the the discussion about mecha bodies. There seems to be a huge disconnect between fashion and body from my understanding of "fashion".
I didn’t expect she was actually setting up the discussion to go into newtypes and it gave me chills. I thought it was genius.
i can’t believe it’s possible to love gundam more than i had but i do now ty
Well we can't deny that Zeon has drip.
This was absurdly good

@@sarahmccostumes4782 oh wow seriously? Haha, have fun! Thats a lot of content to go through!

!!!omg you're so right!!!!
This the one of the best videos about Gundam I have ever seen. Instant sub
I finally, finally know why I love giant robots that you pilot from within
The world needs more people talking about Mecha as Bodies. Thank you for this fascinating, fresh read on Gundam's Mobile Suits (God, it sounds so obvious in hindsight) and newtypism.
You presented an amazing perspective I never considered! Thank you for this video!
First time I'm watching this. Subscribed, holyshit this is EXACTLY what I come to youtube for. Your channel is phenomenal.
Wow. PHENOMENAL video! Absolutely loved it.
I’m glad I found your channel through that stormlight animatic

Found this randomly. As someone who knows nothing about Gundam or fashion, this was very very enlightening. Respect!

A truly fantastic video! It made me think about Mobile Suit Gundam in a new and interesting way, and I learned about Gashion Theory!
first of all, brilliant.

Mishearing the line at 06:02 as "We heard that an anime fighting man has landed." :D
I super dig this! Just finished rewatching mobile suit gundam and the recent Gundam Origin and this was a nice way to cap it off.

Wow, this is an incredibly good essay.
Finished the 1979 show yesterday and I came back to watch the video that I had saved for later

Just coming back here to say I’ve started this weekend. I always remembered this video. Now I’m on episode 6 :)

amazing work, love the thesis and the way you put this together visually!!
Very interesting take on the MSG. I'd love to do a follow up concerning Zeta and CCA to close off the informal trilogy.
Phenomenal video. Truly eye opening.
Got recommended on this video. Shame it was striked but the point is, this helps me a bit on the story I'm working on it. Though I still need more research and reference.
A great essay, loved the example (even if I'm not familiar with the anime and franchise) !

That was informative....probably will remember cuz gundam

So how does this connect to Mobile Fighter G Gundam? Because those gundams are absolutely wild
Really cool analysis!
I always wondered, when does Char begin his transition as a newtype?
really great video

YESSSSS YESSSSSSSS YES YESSSSSSS YESSSSSSSS YESSSSSSSS YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
