This is the 3rd or 4th time I watch this video, I can honestly say that 8th MS team is one of the best overall Gundam OVAs I've ever watched. If you really are going to get a Ez8, I would suggest getting the HGUC from 2013. The MG from 2000 isn't worth getting simply because of the types of plastic used. It will look great, but it will suffer a lot of sagging and falling apart over time. I just wish Bandai released a revive version of the Ez8 like they did of the Ground Gundam back in 2018. Honestly, these retrospectives have reignited my love of Gundam. I have a back log off 15 kits and I finally want to actually build a kit for the first time in years! Thank you so much and keep up the great work.
This and Stardust Memory are actually two of my faves. Top 3 is rounded off by Zeta. I think "realism" fits Gundam perfectly. And the two have some of my favorite mechs and animation.
I totally agree with you, 1st zeta, 2nd Stardust memory and 3nd this, even though the first mobile suit Gundam and after war Gundam X come after very near with them.
20:30 I was invested till I heard the Hangar theme from FM5: Scars of War. Holy shit, it feels so good to know that there are people who recognize the game!
08th MS Team is my favorite mecha. While the romance subplot was merely, "okay," the gritty realism and attention to detail really sets the series apart. The mobile suits move and react like you'd expect giant armored machines to because of physics. They suffer wear, tear and lasting damage as real equipment would - with jury-rigged replacements as one might expect in a war. The protagonists aren't invincible, insurmountably better pilots, or in dramatically better mechs than their foes. And there's no New Type, geass, etc. magic.
The 08th MS Team is to Gundam what HALO: ODST is to HALO, no "supersoldier single-handedly changes the course of war" bullshit, just mere mortals with pure grit and team determination.
definitely one of my favorite Gundam series right behind the Origin, 0079, zeta and war in the pocket. i honestly think it should've been slightly longer especially to flesh out more Aina and Shiro's relationship
I love when you say “this is fucking gundam and everything is spelled in terrible ways that make absolute no fucking sense, so shut up” lolololol also loved this video!
08 MS team is peak Gundam/OYW content. All the little details are great, the weight to the mobile suit movements, the need for repairs, the zaku using a federation shield and the guns actually needing to be reloaded...perfection
I wasn't able to get the models from this series but I had one of the action figures and it was my favorite it had the weapons case that the cannon would break down into, the machine gun had a detachable magazine and a folding stock then to see that level of detail in the OVA was mindblowing
It’s criminal how underrated and unwatched this OVA is. I can’t tell how many anime fans I talk to that have never watched or even heard of this great addition to the franchise. Def one of my favorites of the gundam universe and even anime in general
Absolutely fantastic! And yea I totally agree with the last episode being a bit of a missed step especially with the newtype kids but I do appreciate that they gave them a nod of sorts. Its a subject gundam always flirts with but the trauma and abuse of the newtype testing programs really only shows itself in damaged people rather than really go through the horrors outside some of the Zeta's and Unicorn which gave it a little more "love". I also feel at least in some way it was to help tie in some of the side stories as well. One big one being Blue Destiny's Manga series. The Exam system (that alot of later newtype systems like the Psycho gundam and NTD were based on) was put into a gundam ground unit. The 'heart' behind that program was Marion Welch, who was never really talked about in the episode but was the blue haired girl sick and then buried. The exact blue hair color and style really pointed it to being her which was kind of a way to tie up that story too. Fantastic to see you visit this one and absolutely loved it! I also had no idea the director died mid production. ._.
You did really well these retrospective videos feel like the book reports I used to give in middle school where you pretty much end up play-by-playing the whole thing and the teacher cuts you off after 20min of standing up in front of the class and babbling.
This series was an amazing series. It, as you said, showed soldier life and gave us amazing suits. It is my all time favorite series because it shows us that the Gundams are not invincible given a nameless grunt beheads and disables one in practically a weak suit. Then the shot in the leg from a tank that disables it. Overall was amazing
Another fantastic video man, keep up the amazing the work! I recently got into Gundam, and your videos have been really helpful to review the strengths and weaknesses of each series. 08th MS Team is undoubtedly one of my favorites so far.
I think the reason that I like the 08th MS Team is bc it was the first show that really made it feel like our main cast was fighting in regular military hardware. The gundams weren’t special, one-of-a-kind, super weapons whose specs outclassed anything used by either side. They were just stock models. If one broke down, you’d just hop in another one. They had to use tactics and be cunning to use their numbers to their advantage. If they got in a head-on-head battle with a group of Zakus there’s no guarantee that they’d come out on top just because they were using gundams.
This is the perfect place for me to write this.. 08th MS Team is not only one of the very best Gundam Series, its also one of the most underrated animes of all time. I have yet to be as impressed with any animation as the immense awe I felt when watch the EZ8 fight Goof. If I ever find myself in a situation where I want to show someone how good anime is I show them that fight.
Just discovered your channel, dude. Fantastic content. 08th MS Team and 0083 are my favorite Gundam series’ due to their grounded, realistic outlook on the One Year War and it’s aftermath. No space wizards, just enlisted and commissioned troops hating war but fighting it anyway. The animation style in both shows are incredible. Keep up the great work, man.
Two of my favorite series 08th MS team along with 0080 War in the Pocket are often referred as the best entry into Gundam if u don't start with 0079 and to this day 08th MS team is the most realistic series in the franchise by far(probably besides the scene where Shiro dodged a fallen Zaku's two close ranged machine gun shots without being affected by the shock waves)
My absolute fav series in Gundam. I feel like on Toonami stopped at ep 11 and i found 12 years later as like a movie or something. Amazing fight scenes. Found you cause of 0083 stayed for 08th MS team. Great job my friend.
what i also like about the foot scene is that Shiro almost straight up gets crushed in it because of a simple mistake. like its simply just that easy to die
I just started watching this show again today, and literally checked to see if you had a review yet, mere minutes before you uploaded 😆 Love your Gundam Retrospectives!
I have to respect 8th MS Team for having such grittiness so rarely seen in other Gundam media. Grunts duking it out, no specials beam or funnel spamming to win the day, just good ol' fashioned teamwork and ingenuity. I must admit to thinking that the overall message gets muddled in the second half when the love story comes around. I also never understood the "both sides being bad" as a criticism for this and Unicorn, I mean, have you seen UC as a whole? Tomorrow's enemies become today's allies but Anaheim will still keep selling to everyone. It's so close to being a favorite of mine but I can see why others like it. Looking forward to the Gundam X review, truly underrated and my personal favorite AC by far.
@@nicodalusong149 I didn't expect to like it as much as I did, until I realized After War is Universal Century for people who don't like how Universal Century turned out.
@@jl8060 Yes, that's part of what I like about it and why I suggest it as a starting show because it has enough UC and AU in it that is a really good to branch out from. Also, Tiffa is best girl.
@@nicodalusong149 It's got enough leverage for being an alternate UC for it to work, yeah. I'd say that some familiarization with UC would enhance the effect, especially if they don't like how UC continually gets darker and dreary with each passing year. Tiffa is definitely an interesting character, and her and Garrod's romance is one of the few romances in Gundam that work for sure.
8:50 eh late in the war relatively but early in the 0079 show, since it starts with Garma's funeral and ends a short time after Odessa. So even tge standard non ground GMs are very rare/unfinished.
Something I greatly appreciate about 8th MS Team is that it never goes into the two-class system with super suits and grunts essentially forming seperate battlefields since the latter have no chance what-so-ever against the former and get mowed down by the dozen if they try. Here a Gundam is just a slightly better suit, but by no means undefeatable. A simple Zaku can still crack them if the pilot is just better or luckier than the Gundam one's. Don't get me wrong I have no problem with those things existing and Unicorn and Thunderbolt for example are awesome in their own right, but it's refreshing that we can get both kinds of series. After all even the very first MS Gundam series at least started out with the Gundam being vulnerable to regular Zakus too and being put on the backfoot by aces or numbers of regular suits several times before Amuro's essentially superpowers kick in. I can't say it is my sole all time favourite Gundam series, since that changes with my mood, but it's definitely among the group at the very top.
O8th MS Team is one of my favorites. I love the parallels between the EZ8 and the Sherman Tank. Definitely the most grounded series of the Universe. Also, nice touch with the Front Mission 4 remix! I heard it, and immediately went back to my PS2 days.
08th MS Team is my favorite Gundam series of all time, just for how they portrait the Gundam Battles and how realistic it make it feel, also the amazing characters and the dynamics of their small band of characters. Also I dont know if the original run of 08th of Adult Swim didn't have the last episode, for me this is the first time I ever heard of that last episode, to me the show ended in that episode when you see Shiro and Aina surviving and show that Shiro lost his leg in the fight, that visual always have haunt me in a good way and was my favorite ending (Probably the reason I love so much How to Train your Dragon, because I feel Hiccup have a very similar arc with he also losing his leg in a big final battle)...now that I know there is an extra episode...I probably watch it but just for curiosity but I prefer ep. 11 as the last episode.
this has to be the most underrated mobile suit anime of all time, I honestly prefer the one year war to everything else, just love how grounded the combat was and the story of the main character. episode 6 battle line on the burning sand was my fav episode and also episode 7 you get the flashback to the incident that happened on side 2 colony, super good, highly recommend this on hulu.
Loving the gundam videos...cant wait for the new gundam series to drop...iv re watched all the gundam series I can find on streaming so many times wishing a new series would drop and now we are so close
I loved how grounded and realistic 08th MS Team feels. I also liked the detail of Norris being a complete badass because as an Ace Pilot, if he was to be pitted against a Newtype like Amuro, he would get decimated. But in a real fight with no advantages other than raw skill, this shows that even the best of the best pilots couldn't keep up with all the other Newtypes but would stomp regular soldiers in the same way someone like Kamille would in the Z Gundam.
08th ms team is my favorite Gundam series for all of its' merits, Stardust Memory is my favorite by nostalgia as it was one of the first DVDs I ever owned... And your right, the romance is done so much better in 08
My entry into the series was seeing the shelves full of Gundam models as a kid at my cousins place, I then started watching the OG 79 Show and then later enthralled by Wing/War in the pocket.. everything. Lol Always love when MSV gets some love.
The RX-79 [G] always felt more like a new limited production series mobile suit than a cobbling of whatever parts were left over from the V Project. The cockpit of the 79 is located in the upper torso while the 78's cockpit is located mid torso. The beam sabers of the 79 are stored in a leg compartment as opposed to the backpack of the 78. The 79 id also built like they were never intended to use the Core Block System like the 3 V project suits.
Bit of both, I would say. The ground type GM is likely a new limited production series, and the RX-79 [G] is likely a spin-off that is essentially the gundam version of a GM-79 [G], based on how the GM was a (co) development of the Gundam, with the actual leftovers of the RX-78 project. In all ways, it is more of a suped-up GM-79 [G], than an RX-78.
Your next video should be about Iron-Blooded Orphans. It's what got me back into Gundam, is my favorite alternate timeline for Gundam, and it holds a special place in my heart.
Thank you ! well done video on this version of Gundam! I grew up watching this in the early 2000s and really like this perspective of Gundam instead of super hero-like characters
This is by far, one of the best Gundam offerings in the series, Gundam 0083 and Gundam 0080 war in the pocket. Also love Gundam Unicorn and Iron Blooded Orphans.

2. Gundams are realistic machines
3. Good plot

I can't get past Thunderbolt's gore aspects. Gundam and gore just don't mix.
Bruh how on earth is your channel not more popular. These videos are incredibly thorough.
08th MS Team Simply the best for me. everything was perfect! thanks for cover it up.
And there's no New Type, geass, etc. magic.
Given your take on this, can't wait to see your review of Iron Blooded Orphans.
The 08th MS Team is to Gundam what HALO: ODST is to HALO, no "supersoldier single-handedly changes the course of war" bullshit, just mere mortals with pure grit and team determination.
Just rewatched 08th and was thinking your retrospective would be great! Glad to see I'm right.
definitely one of my favorite Gundam series right behind the Origin, 0079, zeta and war in the pocket. i honestly think it should've been slightly longer especially to flesh out more Aina and Shiro's relationship
I love when you say “this is fucking gundam and everything is spelled in terrible ways that make absolute no fucking sense, so shut up” lolololol also loved this video!
08 MS team is peak Gundam/OYW content. All the little details are great, the weight to the mobile suit movements, the need for repairs, the zaku using a federation shield and the guns actually needing to be reloaded...perfection
garbage dumpster fire
@@zx2731 I respect your decision to have a bad take.
I wasn't able to get the models from this series but I had one of the action figures and it was my favorite it had the weapons case that the cannon would break down into, the machine gun had a detachable magazine and a folding stock then to see that level of detail in the OVA was mindblowing
I saw 08th MS Team when it aired on Toonami. It’s still one of my favorite gundam stories
Gotta love those Ground Types. Also, some sweet Ball action.
This is my favorite Gundam Series over all.
It’s criminal how underrated and unwatched this OVA is.
I can’t tell how many anime fans I talk to that have never watched or even heard of this great addition to the franchise.
Def one of my favorites of the gundam universe and even anime in general
08th MS is *not* underrated in any sense of the word considering the unending praise it gets
Underrated?? Never. Everyone who has watched it has this at least in their top 5 Gundam series
thank you so much Retcon404. Your videos are always a welcome!
I also had no idea the director died mid production. ._.
Awesome video man, your gundam reviews are fantastic! Love the use of battle assault music!
Excellent video! Really put into words what i love about 08th MS and was very well paced!
The first Gundam anime I watched, and so far still my favorite. :)
Same, I watched it last summer because I didn’t have anything else to do and now I am completely hooked on the franchise
This channel helped me rediscover my love for gundam
You did really well these retrospective videos feel like the book reports I used to give in middle school where you pretty much end up play-by-playing the whole thing and the teacher cuts you off after 20min of standing up in front of the class and babbling.
This series was an amazing series. It, as you said, showed soldier life and gave us amazing suits. It is my all time favorite series because it shows us that the Gundams are not invincible given a nameless grunt beheads and disables one in practically a weak suit. Then the shot in the leg from a tank that disables it. Overall was amazing
despite me taking my name from a gundam series i love, 08th MS team is by far my favorite gundam series
My all time favorite Gundam series! Damn I'm gonna have to go watch it again now!
Another fantastic video man, keep up the amazing the work! I recently got into Gundam, and your videos have been really helpful to review the strengths and weaknesses of each series. 08th MS Team is undoubtedly one of my favorites so far.
Just what I needed while working on a model kit. You got me through the infuriating torso of the HGUC Gaplant
I saw this a few months ago and I loved it. I'll be sure to rewatch it in the future.
0083 is awful though…
@@DeltaAssaultGaming I love 0080. It's just perfect.
08TH MS Team is one of the best out of all the series. This and wing are my absolute favorites. Great video.
8th ost team was definitely the coolest one year War Era series while war in the pokect is the most tragic
A fellow After War enjoyer. Nice.
Awesome man. This is the one I’ve been waiting for.
8:50 eh late in the war relatively but early in the 0079 show, since it starts with Garma's funeral and ends a short time after Odessa. So even tge standard non ground GMs are very rare/unfinished.
Wish there were more series like MS 08th. Grounded as grounded Gundam can get.
its not actually realistic at all and im going to laugh at everyone who calls it realistic.
It’s definitely grounded, but it’s not gritty
@@mpo48The show with giant space colonies and huge mechs with light sabres isn't realistic. Wow, who would have thought?
This one is still my favorite Gundam on all the franchise
This is in my opinion the best Gundam show ever.
Love your content dude and also love that we have all the same books on our shelves. Hail yourself
I loved this Gundam series the most! The most realistic in my eyes and more tactical
My favorite in the series, you have earned my follow!
Hell yes ! Let's go ! I love this show my favorite Gundam series. Thanks again for making theses, they are awesome.
P.s nice video backdrop.
Another banger! 💥 love the Gundam series bro! Also I’m glad you were able to find a new residence!
this has to be the most underrated mobile suit anime of all time, I honestly prefer the one year war to everything else, just love how grounded the combat was and the story of the main character. episode 6 battle line on the burning sand was my fav episode and also episode 7 you get the flashback to the incident that happened on side 2 colony, super good, highly recommend this on hulu.
Great darn video! Subbed
dude im new to the channel but I love the videos!! Thanks for making them!
Glad you like them!
One of my favorite gundam series
Loving the gundam videos...cant wait for the new gundam series to drop...iv re watched all the gundam series I can find on streaming so many times wishing a new series would drop and now we are so close
08th MS Team is my personal favorite of the UC timeline. Loved everything about this anime.
@Retcon_404 have u watched Gundam War in the Pocket? it has (like you said "gritty and realistic(mostly) ) take on the One Year War.
Yep! I even did a video on it
Dare I say it, this Gundam series are the most grounded to reality.
08th ms team is my favorite Gundam series for all of its' merits, Stardust Memory is my favorite by nostalgia as it was one of the first DVDs I ever owned... And your right, the romance is done so much better in 08
Great review! I was waiting for this one ;) thanks! One of my favorite gundam next to gundam oo
Best series in the franchise! Awesome video.
My entry into the series was seeing the shelves full of Gundam models as a kid at my cousins place, I then started watching the OG 79 Show and then later enthralled by Wing/War in the pocket.. everything. Lol
Always love when MSV gets some love.
The RX-79 [G] always felt more like a new limited production series mobile suit than a cobbling of whatever parts were left over from the
V Project. The cockpit of the 79 is located in the upper torso while the 78's cockpit is located mid torso. The beam sabers of the 79 are
stored in a leg compartment as opposed to the backpack of the 78. The 79 id also built like they were never intended to use the Core Block
System like the 3 V project suits.
I grew up watching this in the early 2000s and really like this perspective of Gundam instead of super hero-like characters
wish more gundam series made every interaction and fight feel like they were so weighted and urgent. sound design really did wonders for 08th ms team
Yep. Unlike seed where they only lose weapons and survive every encounter
I think that the last episode was pretty wholesome and that the ending just wouldn't have been the same without it.
This series is amazing, my favorite and for me one of the greatest Anime’s of all time.
This is by far, one of the best Gundam offerings in the series, Gundam 0083 and Gundam 0080 war in the pocket. Also love Gundam Unicorn and Iron Blooded Orphans.
Gotta rewatch this series and 0083 again. Those classic gundam series are 👌.
