Charlie. State of Euphoria and S.O.D. in the late 80’s was my intro to double bass and the use of auxiliary hi-hats. I learned how to initially play drums by getting drum and cymbal brochures, watching music videos, and reading tablatures in Metal mags and mimicking movements on air drums with the type of setup I wanted to learn to play. I taught myself to play a lot of things by ear, and when I read tablatures I had figured a lot of song parts out, but was wrong on some parts. The first time I played drums I could keep a beat and do some single bass; I was told I needed to get a kit. Of course, technical playing and timing on a real set is a different beast when you can hear the sound! Thank you for being one of the first most influential drummers to my playing!
I have always described your style as, "Charlie plays like an octopus with an odd number of arms".. totally as a complement of course.. You're fucking amazing.. and here you make it look SO easy.. Nothing but respect.
I remember hearing this for the first time in ‘04 in my car at work. I called over one of my co-workers to check it out because it was so mind blowing. He was mildly impressed... fuck ‘em. I know an incredible beat/performance when I hear one. You’re the best Charlie! Been digging your shit since ‘87!!! \m/
Hopefully Anthrax would cover more songs by John Bush now with Joey up front. Like Nothing and Invisible would be a killer with the sound of Joey's voice.
Charlie, if you ever see this, you are the greatest and my favourite drummer! Also Anthrax is my favourite band. I hope you guys sell more CDs in Turkey. I really want to buy them but can't :(
Gene Hoglan is a the nuclear Clock, a drum machine set on KILL. Charlie is a drum machine set on "Grind to fine paste" this makes my drumming brain drop it jaw open and stare agog.....
Thanks for posting this clip Chief. Cool to see the closed hi hat parts and the alternating sticking on the snare drum during the faster parts. I didn't know what you were doing there.
I love the bass drum patterns and overall drumming of Fueled, Make Me Laugh, and 1000 Points of Hate. Would love to see some videos of these being played, perhaps even with a video of the bass drumming.
@OGTheDemon We will just have to wait and see if there are any more John Bush era songs attempted to be sang by Belladonna. John Bush is the metal voice of today, and his voice is prefured by Charlie and Scott who write the songs. Metal is deep and heavy, not higher pitch.
@02xxxx20 uh huh.... alright lol let me ask u this what songs do they play more? bush era or joey era songs? hehe face man dont try this if u liek john bush thats fine but joey is a member that made anthrax who they are charlie joey and scott are anthrax...
who ever says 'your only a true anthrax fan if u prefer john/joey' is full of shit. your a true anthrax fan if u like everything anthrax has brought out, its all fucking deadly \m/
@hjkentproductions Joey wasn´t the very first singer, you should know this. And that wouldn´t be the reason why a singer is better for a band or not... and example: Iron Maiden or Ac/dc, between many others: In Maiden Bruce is not the first singer of the band and in Ac/dc nor Brian neither Bon weren´t the very first singers. Anyway... you are not going to change your mind and neither do I. So as Scot Ian says at the end of one of my favorite Anthrax songs, Potter's Field: "Stop it".
@TheBoinger5150 pantera was groove metal/thrash.... phil voice fits perfectly he is an amazing singer.... ur missing the point of "THRASH" not "Heavy" or" sludge"
@TheBoinger5150 there are many types of metal hauss and "thrash" is not supposed to have this incredible deep voice its meant to be fast and agressive.... this is not death metal..
@towerofmadness if you were truly an old anthrax fan, you would naturally like joey better than john bush. Who did the voice on the first anthrax albums?
A "true" fan does not, in my eyes, have to like everything a band does, ever. If a band releases a crappy record (which hasn't really happened with Anthrax), a "true" fan should not take that as a sign of a band gone to shit, but explore it's qualities and find anything redeeming. And so, cherish the good and overlook the bad in wait of something better. For instance, with Metallica, listening to the good riffs on Lulu or St. Anger and waiting for Magnetic, Death and Beyond.
@hjkentproductions No one should tell anyone "shut up" it reminds me the stupid king of Spain... anyway. I prefer John, I think we can´t compare them, as Frank Bello told me once, they are different. Greetings from an old Anthrax fan from Basque Country, keep on shouting ;-) \\m// \\m// (Sorry about my english if I´ve made a mistake).
@TheBoinger5150 joey has one of the widest vocal ranges in metal... john bush has that genric mid-late 90's wanna be grunge voice. ANTHRAX has always had more of a punky feel to it joey fits that much better than bush
@TheBoinger5150 belladona destroys bush.... the "only" version with joey is epic bush needs to stick to that fake armored saint soun so damn generic. Anthrax's best yrs are and always will be with joey
@towerofmadness i also have free speech telling you to shutup, and that joey is a million times better than john would ever be. Singing wise and personality wise.
Now this is bullshit. I have met both John and Joey, and they both are amazing to fans. John will shoot the shit with fans, just chat with them about past concerts, thank the fans repeatedly for being there. Joey is very close to that. Helluva a nice guy that is cool as hell to chat with. I'd say John would be a 10/10 for fan experience, Joey a 9.5 or 10...very close. Rob was a 10/10, same with Frank. First time I met Charlie and Scott, they were a bit standoffish, but the last time I did, they were both great. Maybe a 9/10 or so. Jonathan was off some, seemed tired and subdued. That could just be his personality, I'd put him around a 5 or 6.
@02xxxx20 john bush aint thrash.... the john bush era... was the "blend in era" anthrax became generic. In my eyes the spark was gone. Not saying anthrax didnt have talent during that era( charlie is a god....) but thrash was forsaken and the return of joey and a classic lineup (minus Dan) is awesome..... and joey takes john bush songs and rocks the fuck out of em.... betya fukin john bush cant sing like dio like joey can!!!1 that takes fukin vocal range and talent RIP ronnie
The drumming is what makes this song great. Amazing as always Charlie.
100%! The drums in this song are so awesome.
best metal drummer period
In a planet with no Gene Hoglan
I love C Benante but to me there’s some aliens over him
really miss bush songs being played live
This is why this guy is my favorite drummer!
One of Heavy Metal's best drum moments ! Thank you,Charlie ! :) Very remarkable !
I bet he wrote these parts himself, he seems really proud and he damn should be
Youre the greatest MR Benante🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻👏👏👏🥁🥁🇨🇦🇨🇦

And...that’s why I love the oldies. And Charlie.

Cool
so many great techniques in here..all put together to lift the song up into a higher power level. love it
the best thrash drummer period
Gene Hoglan is a the nuclear Clock, a drum machine set on KILL.
Charlie is a drum machine set on "Grind to fine paste"
this makes my drumming brain drop it jaw open and stare agog.....
Thanks for posting this clip Chief. Cool to see the closed hi hat parts and the alternating sticking on the snare drum during the faster parts. I didn't know what you were doing there.
And that's how you play the drums. Charlie makes those drumsticks danve I tell ya
I love the bass drum patterns and overall drumming of Fueled, Make Me Laugh, and 1000 Points of Hate. Would love to see some videos of these being played, perhaps even with a video of the bass drumming.
One of the all time greatest

Okay, so my tutorial video was COMPLETELY wrong lol....Glad you finally showed us how you do it, Charlie. You're the best.
That is sick !!!!!!
I STILL MISH JOHN BUSH...
this song has awesome drums. Charlie don't cheat!
Just amazing!
He makes it look so easy.
Very very good mister Benante !!! :)
I used to have that zeppelin poster in my room when I was a kid

This is wonderful Charlie :-D
who ever says 'your only a true anthrax fan if u prefer john/joey' is full of shit. your a true anthrax fan if u like everything anthrax has brought out, its all fucking deadly \m/
Quit arguing Joey Vs John. They are/were huge members of what anthrax is. Your just talking shit about the band you claim to love.
Love me some Charlie

@OGTheDemon Ok dude so what would ya call Phil back in the Pantera days then? I'm not into death metal at all.
@TheBoinger5150 pantera was groove metal/thrash.... phil voice fits perfectly he is an amazing singer.... ur missing the point of "THRASH" not "Heavy" or" sludge"
que temazo!
Neil Turbin did. You seemed confused about that.
@towerofmadness yeh he was so awesome. i dont mind joey though, its nice having the classic line up (minus dan)
A "true" fan does not, in my eyes, have to like everything a band does, ever.

maaan! how many hands have???????? ha ha ha
what's apu doing in your studio?
@TheBoinger5150 bush needs to stick to armored saint hes not the thrash anthrax we all know and love
Charlie, always wondered, how do you play schism intro? Nothing found on the net.
olexiykolias 4 hits with the feet, 4 hits with the hands. Repeat!
You haven't seen a video because only Charlie can play it...lol
@hjkentproductions No one should tell anyone "shut up" it reminds me the stupid king of Spain... anyway. I prefer John, I think we can´t compare them, as Frank Bello told me once, they are different. @02xxxx20 u got that mixed up big time...
@hjkentproductions John Bush !!!!!!!!!
You fucking rule!! \m/
@TheBoinger5150 joey has one of the widest vocal ranges in metal... john bush has that genric mid-late 90's wanna be grunge voice. ANTHRAX has always had more of a punky feel to it joey fits that much better than bush
@gibsonsg1423 well.....he´s different... anyway Rob was a good choice.
@TheBoinger5150 anthrax's best yrs were with belladona there best music was with belladona.... JOHN BUSH IS NOT THRASH end of story :P
@02xxxx20 w/e helps u sleep at night
Hopefully he moved away from Chicago. Going off the rails over there.
@TheBoinger5150 belladona destroys bush.... the "only" version with joey is epic bush needs to stick to that fake armored saint soun so damn generic. Anthrax's best yrs are and always will be with joey
@towerofmadness shutup.
