My father, Don Ciccone, wrote this song about my mother. He was leaving for VietNam when he wrote it. My brother and I just began working on a podcast about a memoir our father wrote right before he passed away in 2016. Thank you for doing this video ❤
He was pretty great, wasn’t he. Xoxo, sis.
Write a movie script for it!
@@GeorgePenton-np9rh At this stage, we're working on getting the memoir to a point where it honors his legacy while adding all of the stories we think shed light on who he was as an artist and human being! But we like you're thinking!
Thank you for mentioning this incredible song! 💖 Don wrote this song for his girlfriend, he was 17 or 18 years old. What amazes me about this gorgeous song is not only the hauntingly beautiful melodic sound but the lyrics are beyond the scope of what I would think the average person Don’s age could ever conceive. His voice also is the cherry on top! A quick mention , the baseline is superb! I first heard this song when my dad’s garage band (his hobby) played it for a family event. I’ve been in love with it ever since! Thank you again!
Always loved this song. I think the story line is the singer is sad because he's in love with a seemingly free spirit girl, but to that point, it was a one-way street. Then, she takes his hand and apparently returns his affection in kind and that makes him Mr. Dieingly Glad. Not a break-up at all, but rather the start of a new relationship.
Absolutely correct .
Agree.
If I had to choose one song to listen to on a continuous loop forever, it would be this one. The beauty of the music just takes me on a journey of happiness and comfort. I listen to this song more than any other from the 60s. Maybe because it's the leadoff song on my "Mellow Faves" playlist when I'm ready for sleep!
What a wonderful way to put it...on a continuous play loop. I feel that way too, because it has always been about my favorite song ever. And that means a lot because I don't believe in favorite songs because there are just too many beautiful songs out there, ever
I knew the singer in the 70’s. Wonderful person, fabulous singer, songwriter, pianist, incredible talent.
Always loves this song since I was 9 or 10 yrs old
I first heard of this Song 4 days ago..how did I miss it being a Child in the 60's..its a beautiful Ballad..🙏
Thank You for including the lyrics!
Daniel, thank you so much for requesting this song. It has been many many years since I heard this gem. I think I was twelve or thirteen when this hit the charts and I loved the music as well as the wordplay. Still do. Nice take from Harri 🌺✌️
Thanks Debbie for the nice comments. I loved this song as a teen too. 🙃👍🇨🇦🇺🇸🇺🇦🇬🇧
Beautiful song from these New Jersey boys who broke up because most of them got drafted and fought in 'Nam. The lead singer on this song, Don Ciccone (who also wrote it), would later share lead vocals on The Four Seasons' 1975 mega-hit "(December 1963) Oh What a Night."
And no, he wasn't related to Madonna Louise Ciccone.
Did they all make it safely back home?
@@mandarinlearner Remarkably they all survived the war. Ciccone was in the Air Force for 4 years. Harri wanted to know more about "Mr. Dieingly Sad." It was written about and for his girlfriend Kathy. There's a happy ending. They got married after Don returned from Vietnam, had two daughters, and remained married till his death in 2016 at the age of 70.
I didn;t know that! (about the 4 seasons connection I mean) Thanks John.
He didn't only sing on that song, he was actually one of The Four Seasons. I saw them on a talk show where he said that he was in The Critters, which I hadn't known at the time. They also had a single in which I owned the 45 of called "Don't Let The Rain Fall Down On Me" which is a really pretty song.
You are right Harri. The singer is sad at first and puzzled as to how the girl is so mystifyingly glad. Then she shows him that she loves him and then he is not Mr. Dieingly Sad anymore but he too is mystifyingly glad. It is confusing a bit but after you've heard it a few thousand times you get it. I love the bass line so much always have. 🤪👍
It has a very unusual sound for a mainstream pop hit. Not many people risk that much musical sadness. I can't think of more than a handful of examples - "Forever Autumn" is one prime example I guess - Genesis "Many too many" is another but I can't think of very many more!
@@alanmusicman3385 It does have a definite and unusual tone of sadness
then it Segways into a happier ending. Thanks for your nice comment.👍
you have to know where you stand.....he finally knows, beautiful song...remember it well.
I found the lyrics I have had a horrible time trying to figure out. It was on another reaction to this song that one of the original members of the Critters
sent in a comment on the last verse at the 3:21 mark. The lyric is "Unlock, all doors, I'm yours" I had to slow it down a bit but there it was wow. Only took me 50+ years. 😉🙃👍
Haven't heard this in decades. Thanx Harri
Sophisticated lyrics for a 60s pop song. Very well written.
Love your reaction to this, Hari! So, The Critters, I preferred their version of "Younger Girl" to any of the other versions, but "Mr. Dieingly Sad" is excellent too and if "Happy Together" is sunshine pop then this is autumn pop! I should copyright that 😀Very skillfully done with all those minors and then (when it's not love unrequited any more) to majors.
I always thought their very low-scoring hit "Bad Misunderstanding" was a bit short changed too.
Oh great pick . Love that song .
i checked out the music/charts on this song once. and there were something like 24 different chords used in this pop gem...amazingly sophisticated ...
Interesting note about this song. Don Ciccone wrote it and then enlisted in the Air Force before it was released. It became a hit while he was in Basic Training and all of the promotion of the song carried his voice in video although another of the bandmembers of the Critters appeared to be singing it.
Thank you for your great reaction to this beautiful song! Please try Denise by Randy and The Rainbows. Thank you very much!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊
FROM THAT LONG AGO FALL OF '66. I HAVE THIS 45, & IT IS AN ALL-TIME FAVORITE. ---------------RIP, DON CICCONE. --------------------------MJL, 77 Y/O
Haha, not a breakup song - they got married and had two great kids. Kathy (the subject of the song) passed away a few years ago, and Don, the writer and lead singer passed in 2016. I was the bass player and backup singer on the record.
you played a gorgeous bass. Don sang this heartfully and powerfully. tell me were there females in the chorus and if so who?
Nope - That was Don and me singing the backgrounds.
One of my favorite all-time hits that I've enjoyed since it's release.I interpret the song as the guy being negative about life and how he can't understand how the girl is always so positive until she finally convinces him by the end of the song to be positive like her for a more perfect union as is evidenced by the final stanza where he concedes he is no longer Mr. dieingly sad but now Mr. dieingly glad.
Great 60's band. "Mr. Dieingly Sad" was their biggest hit. They also recorded John Sebastian's song "Younger Girl" & "Georgianna", "I'm Gonna Give", "Bad Misunderstanding", "Don't Let The Rain Fall Down On Me" etc.
If you read about the origin of the song you will learn that he married this girl, and went on to be with other groups singing.
This beautiful song has haunted me since I first heard it as a child in the 60s.
Good song but check out their cover of the Spoonfull's song Younger Girl.
I compare the philosophy of this song to a song on Jennifer Warnes' album "The Hunter." The song is called, "The Whole of the Moon." In that song, the singer tells about how their perspective is always looking at the negative, while the person being sung to is always looking for the positive. For example, she sings, "I saw the crescent; you saw the whole of the moon...I was grounded while you filled the sky; I saw the rain, dirty valley; you saw Brigadoon..." In this song, the singer has a pessimistic viewpoint, which the one he's singing to has an optimistic one.
No it's an unrequited love song and at the end he wants the girl to adore him too the way he adores her so this way he can be like her and be mystifyingly glad and not Mr dieingly sad
So many no hit wonders to choose from. The besties are picking them all! 🙄
The lyrics aren’t quite correct. 3:21
“Unlock all doors, I’m yours”
The lyrics overlap “show me love” so it’s hard to hear.
They also had a hit called Younger Girl the same year .
Another great song. “Younger Girl” maybe not very PC.
A cover of John Sebastian’s song…
One of my favorite songs since I first heard it in the 60s!!! So beautiful!!
Mine, too!
This song made it to Number 17 in Canada and the US. Just a beautiful escape to the past. Thanks Harri and Daniel, for another great memory. Great reaction Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks for the comment Mary. 👍🇺🇸🇨🇦🙃
This isy all time favorite song. It's a perfect blend of harmony words and music. Love it
Good song. Have not heard it in 30 years at least....lol
The sadness doesn't just come from the lyrics, but also the descending chords and melodies of each verse, which abruptly turn back upward. It's almost like......what a child hears when his parents are having a "discussion", when the child cannot understand words yet---only tone.
Better harmonizing than The Beach Boys ever dreamed of….
Beautiful!
Daniel I had this one on my list and I absolutely love it. Thank
you for requesting it. 💜 I think we have the same taste in music.
Thanks Cynthia. Think you are right. I always adore your choices. 👍🙃🇨🇦🇺🇸

I recently heard this song again, I am glad to get your opinion on it.
One of my favorite songs of my youth. Special memories!

Don wrote this for his girlfriend before going to Vietnam. They married after he returned. I think I would have married him if he wrote this lovely song for me. 🙂
