My dad and I used to cast net finger mullet for bait. They always worked the best. We took could not keep to many in the bait bucket or else the would start to die; a live well with constant water would probably be best if you plan to keep a lot of them. We would hook them through the back just behind the dorsel fin. The would last on the hook for hours during the times when the fish were not biting and we could even pick them up and keep them on the hook and place them in the bait bucket and move to a different spot and they would stay alive on the hook. I wish bait shops would have them live but I have only ever seen shrimp. We had luck with all kinds of fish on them: flounder, red fish, trouts....just about everything that you would want to keep to eat.

Live mullet fishing is worth the hassle sometimes. Hard not to try it when they’re running thick, though.

Everyone. Simple trick to improve more bites. Live mullet. Cut off dorsal top fin. Cut off bottom half of tail fork. Now the mullet can not "right it's self" in the water. Everytime it turns sideways it flashes a silver silhouette. Why does it work? Think about a spoon rotating in the water. Constant silver/or gold "silhouette flash." This works all depths, but shallower water means more sun light penetration, means better silhouette "flash." I've caught 23" Redfish in 2-3 foot of water doing this. Saltgrass flats tailing reds.

The thing I love about live mullet is it cost you nothing but your time, the artificial lures cost you big time especially when you lose the lures , I use lures as a plan B when live bait might be a bit hard to get , plan A is my go to when I can live baiting is natural because it’s the fish diet , no brainer really. So simple and fishing is fun. 👍
