The fact that CPS visited the same day as the incident, specifically because they noticed her constant bruising, and that wasn’t enough to help her case?! What else do they want from women besides dead bodies in order for it to be enough?!

Until you have been in a domestic violence situation, you can not POSSIBLY understand what a person goes through. You can not judge what you cannot understand. The mental abuse is horrific, the guilt and embarrassment make you feel like a pile of bricks are on your back. The fear of retribution from the abuser locks you up so that you can not make clear decisions.

@@jragon9215 my ex was the ideal boyfriend for two years. The day after we got engaged, he started beating me. If i left, he found me and dragged me back for more beatings. It took the help of my entire family to get me out and it took months just to get them to believe me because they all thought he was the ideal man. Yes, some women do choose to be with abusive men but thats just not the case for most other abuse victims.
Just to be clear, im usually amazing at picking up bad signs from potential partners. My current partner and i have been together 5 years and hes never even raised his voice at me. As a survivor, I can say I was living in a loop! I tried to appear as normal as I could , full time avoiding escalation! Tried for my kid’s to the best mom I could be. And the real devastation is that I thought it was all my mistake, I felt i didn’t try hard enough! Why I said the things dat agitated him, why I was a sloppy housekeeper, why I didn’t cook nicer food, things like that. My mind was in overdrive all the time, to keep it all together! The day I almost died after a beating and was hospitalised for some time. Social service came and said If I was not able to keep my children safe I would lose my children, because of that I found the braveness to go to a save-house. Where I started all over again, with nothing else than the clothes on our backs. My youngest was only 6 months old! It’s the best thing I ever have done! But man don’t underestimate the fear that comes with that decision. Only when my kids became adults I was at ease again! So do not judge a woman in this situation! It’s the abuser that is betraying the love aspect of the relationship!

How many times do young women try to leave an abusive partner and later end up being murdered themselves. Although the guy got what he deserved, it was murder. The video did a poor job discussing the evidence against her, rather focusing on her family and local support. She killed him in his sleep, pressing the gun to his head so hard that it left a mark. And the main evidence that probably led to the guilty verdict was a text message to her friend saying she couldn't find a way to get kill him without being caught. The defense said it was a joke, *but 2 weeks later her husband was killed in his sleep*, so it was not self defense. Source: CBS News

Remember that over half of female murder victims are killed by a current or estranged/former partner. Domestic abuse is deadly. Even when they leave, their abuser can still find their way to murder them. It happens way too often. Had she not shot him in self defense, she very well could have died trying to leave. *Leaving is the most dangerous part of an abusive relationship*. There are many, many reasons why someone can’t “just leave” and considering that he was threatening murder-suicide, it should be obvious it wasn’t safe for her to “just leave”

I don't know what went through her head, but something sure kept her from leaving. One of them died, and I was so glad, because I was certain he'd have killed her if he hadn't, but nobody believed he abused her when I brought it up, even though I witnessed it first hand. It’s not easy to leave an abusive person especially if they look for you constantly. Personally when I called the police the first time the officer was incredibly rude to me and intimidated me . He was not understanding a victim needs to be able to feel secure. I had a restraining order against him and he still would drive by my parents looking for me and so emotionally, physically draining, and extremely confusing. I feel so bad for this girl . They say a victim really leaves the abuser after about 8 times of trying to leave so why would they send her to jail if there is studies that prove that it take a victim so many tries of trying to leave .

One thing that needs to be understood about domestic violence is the psychological warfare waged against the victim. The abuser chips that the victim's self esteem, isolates the victim. The abuser tears away at the victim until the victim is in a psychological prison. You want to leave, but you can't. You are trapped by the psychological barbed wire the abuser placed inside your mind. I got out before things turned violent because my friends saw what was going on even though I was blind to it. They held a mirror up to my relationship and offered to hold my hand to lead me out the door. People think that's it, but it's not. After I broke up with him, he showed me exactly what my friends feared. I was in the car with him and he shouted, punched and kicked the dashboard as he told me how angry he was that I wasn't laughing at his jokes and that he felt like I put up an emotional barrier that he couldn't break thru. Long story short. I recommended that he go to therapy. He acted like he would and later decided not to. That was the end of that. Thankfully, we weren't already married. I honestly believe that would have enraged him to the point of murder if I divorced him.

Unless you run and disappear, you're not safe! And that has become extremely difficult to do now, thanks to technology. Oh and let's not forget, if you are lucky enough to get away, you will still be handing over your children to the monster, for visitation without any protection. Those are some crap choices, because the system and judges refuse to do anything to truly protect women or children!!!

My 10 year old son he lives with me and I have sole legal custody over lives with me from my first marriage. He has lied and manipulated the court system and abused me and my children and still got temporary custody we’re going to custody child right now. I’m glad that her attorney has a really good voice for her a lot of women like ourselves need a voice. It took me at 10 times before I needed to leave my abuser. I went back to him 10 times before I left him. I’m only allowed to see my son two hours a week on supervised is a Tatian and a center and I live in North Carolina my ex had a case transferred to the state of New Jersey. The state of New Jersey just doesn’t understand how victims of domestic violence or traumatize through the court system and how it affects my children. I’m praying that I’ll get my little boy back hopefully by the beginning of the year because he should’ve been granted temporary custody. I was in abusive relationship and before the relationship I would leave a abusive relationship then my partner started verbally, emotionally and later physical abuse. I didn't leave. He had ripped my confidence and and self esteem apart. I went through conflict, inner conflict on a daily basis for a year before he left me. In the separation I gained confidence and filed for separation. Throughout four years of separation he still verbally and mentally abused me and very manipulative. I met someone and in him leaving I knew I had to leave my husband for me and my children. I filed for divorced three days later after the new man left and I was free in 2 months. It's been 11 years and my ex husband still tries to manipulate me with withholding child support. He tries to touch me when I have said "no!". It's been a hard road and he's doing better but once in a blue moon does manipulative things to me. I am alot stronger, wiser and confident now to stand my ground and keep my boundaries tight. I am grateful for the experience and I have the wisdom to share with other people going through or maybe starting a new relationship with these signs and get out before it's too late. 🙏

It’s absolutely disgusting that a court system punishes the victim-even AFTER PRESENTING EVIDENCE VIA PHOTOS, text, and TESTIMONY from FAMILY and FRIENDS and FAMILY SERVICES and CPS being called!!!!!
The fact that CPS came over was enough to piss the abuser off and actually PUT THE VICTIM IN DANGER!!!! He most likely threatened to actually kill her after that visit! And because I am a DV survivor myself, I would have done as she did and denied the abuse. As a DV survivor I remember being scared and walking on eggshells. I’m was threatened until the ex actually strangled me.
And that is why on that day of CPS visit this tragedy took place!

"If she was being abused, she could have just left". My goodness. I am a grown man and ever since I can recall I've lived in and grew up in a very toxic environment called Home.
Our father was a mouse on weekdays, but at the weekends he became a demon after drinking alcohol Friday-Sunday. He cursed at everyone but mostly he targeted my mother and my sisters. Our mother swept in silence for most of her life. We watched her suffer and we begged her to leave, but her Christian faith and her commitments to "Marriage and Family" meant she would endure a long life of suffering. Every night she prayed for freedom, but freedom was elusive.
No man has the right to physically, sexually, emotionally or psychologically abuse a woman. When we do we are no more than just Bullies and Abusers.
I hope Nikki gets the support she needs and have her conviction commuted and is allowed the opportunity to put her life back together. She shouldn't be punished twice.

My sister and my mother suffered from domestic violence. I was very young back then and it affects me to this day. I swear to myself that I would never allow this to happen to me and it hasn’t. Women who get abused are afraid to leave because they get so belittled mentally and physically that they actually think they are that way. My stepmom use to mentally and physically abused me that i had problems concentrating in school and she Told me I was dumb. Once me and my sisters left that environment I was doing better in school. Then when I became a young adult I figure it wasn’t me that had the problem it was my stepmom. I have PTSD from all I had to endure as a young child.

And courts don't do a damn thing about it other than vilify and pathologize the protective parent.

It goes both ways for both women and men. Especially if children are involved. You owe it to your children to keep them and yourself safe.

Unfortunately it is much more difficult than that. Trust me. I have worked in abuse shelters for both men and women. When children are involved, honestly, CPS and other government agencies may be contacted, but, if the couple involved have unusual dynamics, are codependent, the result or a "welfare check" could definitely not reflect the reality if the situation of the domestic relationship. But you are right. The children should so be considered.

A lot of people think or say “why doesn’t she just leave the bastard?” Unfortunately it seems that things are really complex by the time it gets to domestic abuse. The victim sometimes fears that if she does leave, then he will find her and kill her. Police and other agencies are generally useless and sometimes take the side of the perpetrator. Often the victim will not admit there is a problem, or they blame themselves. There are some good books to read on the topic like Crazy Love by Leslie Morgan Steiner.

No one says that to a kidnapped victim, which is essentially what happens in domestic violence situations. I was so close to trying to kill my ex with a tire Iron. I had it under my pillow waiting for him to go to sleep. Fortunately, my sanity came back to me when I thought about my kids or I would be in prison today and my kids would have suffered more.

I almost lost my eyesight, was hospitalized, had to see multiple specialist. Walking away is one of the hardest things. Explaining to people who never been in that situation why you didn’t initially leave, is one of the hardest things. People can be so judgmental and make you feel like it was your fault for getting into the relationship in the first place. I was far from home, with no money or family or friends. I was fearful for my life. My family made me call every member of my family to explain what happen, just to see if someone will donate some money so I could get a flight home. The domestic violence shelter wouldn’t come get me. I was in the middle of nowhere, no busses, no greyhounds, no cabs, no Ubers, no phone. The police were holding my checks and his mail, until they arrested him. I was terrified for my life. I didn’t think I would make it back home alive. He told me he would feed me to alligators, and that if I didn’t be with him, no one could have me.
