Chandler the Michigan Mauler an experienced fighter once told me this when I casually circuit trained in his gym when my brother trained under him in Middleville Michigan. "There are very few reasons you should actually fight, for your country, for what you believe in and to defend yourself or others." Fighting in the street is something you shouldn't do for recreation or for pride because someone can and will die. If you're not mad enough to kill, you're not mad enough to fight. Fighting in the street is for people who don't value their lives or others lives, it's for reckless people.
The only time to fight is when it's for the safety of women, children or a senior. If you're smart there's no reason to ever get in a one-on-one duel/fight. You should recognize the danger and vacate immediately if there's a chance a pointless fight is going to happen. If it gets to the point of a fight then you're doing something wrong. Best advice I ever got was don't stare other dude's down, don't stare into their soul, don't size them up. If you stick to this rule you'll pretty much never get in a fight. This is a rule they use in prison to avoid fights and it works, most conflict starts from one dude squaring up and eyeballing the other guy. If a dude is trying to start beef and you don't square off and don't look him in the eye he almost certainly won't swing, keep your guard ready but don't try to intimidate back. Guys that like to fight are like dogs that match aggression with aggression, if you give them nothing it almost always turns into nothing.

@@Mack98421Yeah, it's nuts. And most actual trained fighters, I'd think, are not looking to start fights, especially with bigger guys. Because we know what it's like to get hit in the face in sparring. We know what it's like to roll with someone stronger, bigger, better. We also know that you can't tell if someone can fight just by how they look. So true. I have a buddy who never works out, never trained a day in his life, and he goes oh if I get into a fight I’ll just rip your ears off, ears are easy to rip off. I go okay, well how easy do you think it’s gonna be to get a good grip on someone’s ears when they’re punching you in the face and moving around? Lmao. Like frank said, in things like bjj or judo you can actually train the position against people trying to defend, so you’re getting used to attempting these attacks and positions on an unwilling opponent. Not just some ridiculous bill sheets that you think of in a relaxed state that you’ve never practiced.
Could listen to Frank Mir talk about combat for hours. He has a one-of-a-kind mind when it comes to breaking down the reality of what a fight is and the consequences that can come from it.
Hey Frank, one of Maurice Smith's pro training partners was in the club The Beach in Vegas around 1996, and some guy didn't like his tone of voice and asked him if he wanted to fight. He said sure like it was nothing and they went outside. It relates to the 'duel' thing you said. The pro submitted him and was told "I give up"; after being released, the guy wanted to fight again; same thing happens again; the third time, he used a arm bar hyperextension to make sure the guy was done. The guy didn't even know he was fighting an extreme fighter out of J-Sect.
Where as a boxer in milliseconds would have had him on the ground unconscious and not able to get up... In a street fight you need to worry about since he's friends of girlfriend attacking you, stabbing you, bottling you.... You're gonna roll around on the ground exposing yourself and leaving your self unprotected? Stick to movies and ufc guys.
Guy will never grow up.. he’s got the mind of a 17 year old. He needs some good things in his life to bring him away from this crap.. maybe he needs to have kids or something. He can’t be doing this shit in 10 years when he’s 60…
I don’t think he’s actually looking for a fight but he wants to be prepared. I guarantee he tries to avoid fights because he knows what can happen, see training gives you the confidence to walk away or worse case scenario neutralize your opponent.
Eyes gouges and biting are useful at forcing transitions . I've personally done it, but only when the fight started to stall or didn't like the position that I was in.
People will argue that Jiu Jitsu is not good in a street fight till the end of time but 99% of those people would get their shit kicked in in a street fight by someone who knows Jiu Jitsu and they will argue that till the end of time aswell 😂
Exactly. And those people never consider the fact that the BJJ guy also has friends, and they may have more friends with him than the other guy that is fighting him.
@@frakplease3771 my buddies will kick them in the head while I stand over one and kick the shit out of the one I got like I've already done 😆, and if I got out numbered I would disengage, if you can't grapple you can't actually fight you can box and strike but if you fight multiples the chances of having to grapple are more than likely
it's not so much having eyes in the back of your head while standing, but the idea that you will be able to strike them harder and knock them out so quick that you can then move and look for the next possible threat. What the massive majority of men don't realize, is that they don't have the technique, and power to actually reliably and quickly knock someone out with a strike either. I was in a situation where I had a guy in a standing rear naked choke, I had my back up against a wall and he was going to go nite nite any moment, I only just noticed at the last moment his friend rushing in on me, I let go of the choke to try and defend against this guys double leg take down, however there was a bunch of tree roots and I end up on the ground, but I managed to roll and get him in a ground and pound position. weeks later the guy I was choking messaged me saying "I could have kicked you in the head while you were on top of my friend" I just told him he should have done it then.
Great explanation, love the way he explains the difference between fighting for your life Vs just a regular fight kind of thing, not all fights have to be to the death and no need to punish someone for life because you bumped into each other in a bar and had heated words.
He doesn’t seem to understand if you’re on your feet and more attackers enter you have a chance to run. If you’re on the ground tied up like a pretzel with a guy you’re at a bigger disadvantage
So again here they go bringing up the “what is his buddies come out of no where scenario and stomp you” which funny enough you guys only mention when it comes to bjj but no other grappling martial art MOST self defense situations are one on one simple as that
@@nikes4444that’s cuz bjj is the only grappling art that emphasizes and regularly has its practitioners train on the ground for 5 minutes straight in their matches sometimes . So yeah wrestlers sambo guys and judo guys aren’t on the ground nearly as much so of course they don’t get this critique . Boxers and other strikers stay on their feet and there are multiple videos of boxers taking on multiple people . Ken Shamrock was and still is a serious dude but his skills didn't mean much when one of Nasty Boys smashed a lamp over his head and then nearly killed him, no rules and anything can happen outside the ring, one punch can kill if someone falls and cracks their head on the concrete. Probably best to avoid fighting.
Agree 100% In the ring your governed by rules which state tapping out brings an end to the fight but in a spur of the moment life or death situation you keep going until there is no more threat !! Some people see it as overkill but I see it as life preservation.
A good tip I learned for multiple attackers is peeking at the ground (looking straight down), you can see peoples feet behind you if you look down. So you can't see someone's arms, but you can see if they are near or approaching you.
Eye gouging is actually really easy using open hands and a muay thai long guard type guard. I've done it accidentally in a MMA fight once. Afterwards when I watched the video of the fight I thought "holy shit, eye gouging might actually work irl" 🤣
Eye gouges are similar to kicks to the nuts, sometimes they "work" but sometimes they dont. But people who can't fight count on them like some kind of super power that's just gonna "work" no matter what.
@@katietrotter9374 well in a self defense situation just remember to have a good long guard and you'll probably hit them in the eye by accident. No eye gouging specific training needed then 🤣

Yeah, I knew bouncer who was a pro kickboxer on the side in the busiest dance club in Las Vegas of the '90s. He tore his bicep sparring and went back to work with his arm in a cast. Soon after two guys he told to leave laughed at him calling him 'one armed'; they didn't know low kicks were his specialty and both wound up on the their backs fast.
@jamesmiles1328 apparently you've never bounced homie. I believe it only because I've worked multiple rowdy night clubs and have had shit like this happen, and have them go to the hospital after with crazy tales of victimhood, which then police are called back and we are left filling out affadavits and having a review done on my security license. People literally go to bars looking for fights. Drunk rednecks that are supposedly tough in their small podunk towns going to the big city. Now I don't know about any one armed as s whooping or ever seen any kicks other than low kicks trying to make distance(not me, im a little to big to be jackie chan), and the only times I've ever seen anyone try to take someone down and roll with them they usually got stomped on by a crowd. Crazy stuff happens when you have 10 to 15 guys managing over 1000 drunk and cooked up people. Every night usually involves crazy altercations, alot of times outnumbered. We usually had faces and enforcement. Essentially guys who were the "social bouncers" like doormen who are usually the ones who love the attention and are alot smaller and try to look good, and enforcers, which are the ones standing back at a post waiting til either shit pops off, or your social bouncers are getting their ass kicked. Most drunks don't even realize they are being profiled upon arrival and watched accordingly by enforcement. It's not hard to beat up a few drunk idiots and have them make up tales of being jumped because of the shame of being beat up 3 on 1. Even if that guy was much bigger, and much more sober.
Getting in Frank's face is the first mistake you'll be healing from for the following 3 months. When you get older those injuries from yesteryear, will remind you of Frank.
I don't understand how so many people have extensive street-righting resumes, involving serious bodily harm to others, yet never see the inside of a prison.
Frank is so right, you are winning a fight, pounding some dude's face in on the ground.....and some douche from the crowd walks up and football-kicks your teeth out.
A lot of the criticisms geared towards jiujitsu and self defense is nullified with two things. Firstly, The limitations are applicable towards all unarmed self defense (multiple attackers, weapons, etc.). Secondly, the other limitations are not applicable in true self defense when viewed as a fight you are not voluntarily engaged in. You do not have to worry about an evasive striker with great takedown defense in a situation you are willing to walk away from. Jiujitsu is a very defensive fighting style. A guy lunging at you, trying the hold you down or swinging wildly is the ideal situation to utilize jiujitsu.
Frank has a great perspective on these things. However it is worth a search of mma and bjj players get fatally stopped by a firearm. Always assume the other guy is armed. No amount of “rolling” is going to help you.
@@HJRPodcast people who fight don't avoid it, i'm not a fighter and i've never been in a fight or ever even come close. but for some reason every one who trains always have some "street fight" story. So clearly, fighting is for bullies and insecure emotionally fragile people. I'm sure there's some who are cool guys, but it's just too common.
With respect to Frank's greater point here, the argument is not that someone cant blindside you while you're striking, its that if you stay on your feet you can run immediately if things start to go south - like his friends join in. It's also - and this is inarguable - possible to fight multiple people standing on the feet. We've seen it happen. I've never seen anyone successfully grapple multiple people at the same time on the ground. Doesn't seem like a feasible thing, seems like its really easy for someone to treat your head like a soccer ball while you're trying to get your submission in.
It's possible to fight multiple people one at a time on the feet. As soon as they crowd in you, you are screwed. So in both grappling and striking the aim is to attack and disengage. But not knowing grappling makes it much harder to disengage if they have already grabbed you.
This has been a standard counter for years, and yes, it makes sense at first; you probably don't want to go to the ground if there's more than one person attacking you. BUT, and this is a big one, hear this: I trained stand up martial arts for years, thinking it was all I needed. So what do you do if the group that's attacking you has a grappling guy who'll throw your ass on the ground and start pounding on you from the better position? The problem with NOT training grappling is you will have literally no idea how helpless you'll be against a good grappler in a "real fight." This was the story over and over and over in proto "MMA," back when there were almost no rules, rounds, judges, weight classes, or time limits. The elite strikers were routinely beaten by grapplers. The other assumption here is grappling only means going to the ground. A good submission grappler can choke you unconscious or break your arm from a standing position too, and he can use you as a shield/hostage to keep your friends from jumping in. Last, but not least, if you don't know how to fall correctly a good grappler can disable of even kill you just from throwing you to the ground. "No rules in street fights" means he can pile drive you onto your head on concrete.
Being on the feet is important in a fight because your not a sitting duck. Generally in a mallay situation everyone is vulnerable, so it is important to have a self preservation mindset and not indulge in the fight so to speak. Never be passive, but just know it's never fair and best avoided. Cowards generally revel in the idea of doing great damage when it's not a fair fight, although they cannot necessarily be criticised for it all the time because street fights are about all out violence. In a duel situation, guy's like Frank are in their element. They can use their fight IQ and skills to win in variety of ways.
Bjj usually attracts a certain type of person and they usually start and continue bjj because theyre scared people with low confidence (obviously not all) they train for hundreds and sometimes thousands of hours for that one moment they can finally use it in real life and in a situation they probably could have avoided, so i totally understand why they get so butt hurt when people tell them it wont work because they have invested a ridiculous amount of time into it. But the fact is most will never even need to use it and if they do theres a chance it actually might not work out for the for the reasons people stat because theyre very plausible. deep down they know theres a chance they've wasted a copious amount of time which hurts. The fact they feel need to clap back tells you everything
You really don’t want to go to the ground in a street unless you’re getting right back up. I’ve seen people defend themselves against 2-3 attackers on the feet. I’ve never seen this on the ground!!!!
@@nikes4444 …With 3 attackers in that situation, your only move is to pray they stop stomping your head in once you enter the shadow realm. Also, with 3 attackers, I’d rather be Jake Paul on the feet than DC on the ground.
You can t always say that very close to a street fight is MMA. The only thing I will agree of what he said, " If you are very good at MMA" However, Street fights are unpredictable. Plus, you never know if they have a weapon or friends hanging around
I saw a local well known Black belt BJJ instructor, try to split two large athletic looking men arguing outside a restaurant, late one evening. He grabbed the one who he thought was the main aggressor and took him to the ground, by grabbing him from behind. But unbelievably while he rolled around and gained the mounted position, the other male that he thought he was saving from a beating, kicked him straight in the head laying him out cold. Then the police suddenly arrived, thank god, or who knows what could have happened? I'm in my late 70's so couldn't do much, but it was me that phoned the police. I've seen a lot of things in my life and learnt that the worse place to be in a street fight is on your back, or rolling around the ground. But with Jujitsu that's where you are meant to be, rolling around the floor to incapacitate your opponent, but for me that's not a good thing to do, especially in a street fight. I had a friend, who has now left this world god bless him and he was in a similar situation and just knocked both men out who attacked him, basically within a few seconds of each other, which I thought was much more practical and much more safer for him than BJJ. I know by looking on UA-cam, that many BJJ practitioners have called boxing, but maybe they should think again.
If you get punted a few times in a street fight you will understand why. People are way more likely to take a kick at you while you are down on the ground. It’s facts. I’ve been around it a few times. I wonder how many actual street fights Frank has been in. Because when a fight is groups oriented and it goes to the ground punts and stomps are a go to for most people and they can be devastating.
It never fails that people ALWAYS bring up “groups” ONLY when talking about bjj, but the never mention groups when it comes to boxing, judo or wrestling smdh
@@nikes4444 Anytime your on the ground you are vulnerable to a punt or stomp in a group type fight. Any untrained person can punt or stomp pretty powerfully. It’s a very dangerous situation to be in. You want to stay on your feet if there are multiple threats. Same with wrestling if you take some one down and ground and pound. You are vulnerable to someone just running in and punting you. I’ve seen people kod cold from punts and stomps, thank god nobody was permanently injured or lost their life. I’ve seen it happen multiple times. Ive even seen bats and clubs with nails as well. I wasn’t saved yet and drinking was involved every time. I’m not proud of this behavior and to be on both ends of it. Best defense is having Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior ❤️. Repent and trust in Jesus he saves
1 vs 1 street fight is a legend now. Barely a thing. No way I'd lay down while being jumped by at least 2 guys. I'd rather throw one with my Judo and run away.
ok, the reason why your better on your feet if there's another person is not because you can't see them. It's because it's easier to get away from them if your on your feet.
I am not saying he is wrong. But how many people living a normal life gets into fights? Since i stoped going out to drink I haven't even seen a fight. If your often get into fights the best defence is change your lifestyle.
This is the first time I haven’t seen trash talking strikers talking smack about jui jitsu while fighting multiple opponents striker or grappler the best defense for multiple attackers is running away even if your a striker it’s to much of a risk
Interesting, Frank defines "fight" differently from how I've always used it. I've always defined fight as 1 on 1 with no weapons. But I guess this is just semantics.
I have never seen two guys square up honorably like in the movies. Not even in high school. Sucker punching is popular at that age. When your older its friends and whatever you can grab, and maybe if you are a big dude and the other guy either has no friends or puzzy friends big dude is still going to glass you or use a sucker punch if he can.
Frank is a huge dude. I’m a small dude whom avoids fights. If I have to fight, there’s a chance the guy is going to be huge and he will probably murder me.
Its funny but ive come to conclusion that although BJJ is not practical for a street fight its usually what you need to succeed in one. Just like how muay thai is seen as more practical yet you usually doesnt end up where you're fighting toe to toe . It usually starts with a grab.
kinda fucked to do that to someone, u break dudes arm he clearly (more often than not) will not be a threat anymore, trying to cause long term dmg like that on purpose seems a bit much and yes I know any punch could cause that type of dmg often times that does not happen tho, most times you can read a person if they are a real danger to ur life you can tell if this guy is trying to kill me in this fight, if he is not and or if I break his arm and I can tell hes not trying to still come at me and attack me I dont see the point in trying to damage him further UNLESS your life is in danger even after the arm break which often times would not be the case and if it was you would be able to tell and then continue applying dmg
Mir acting like he lives where predators are frequently lurking. The vast majority of people go their whole lives without getting into a fight. People spend tons of time and money learning mma disciplines when it's so much easier to just use common sense to avoid getting in fight. There is only one good outcome in a street fight, but there are a lot of potential bad outcomes.
I don't see Mir doing anything but offering his informed opinion on fighting. I don't think he was in any way recommending or glamorizing street fighting.
Before being known as a mixed martial artist, he was a bouncer at a prominent Vegas Strip club, so his work would skew his odds of foul encounters quite a bit
Sometimes people will be there wanting to do you harm and you'll be glad you're able to defend yourself. Also it gives people a confidence knowing we have skills to defend ourselves.

Frank Mir is why everyone SHOULDN'T be taught MMA. Martial Arts used to be based on a person's character because of its DANGER. Now it's a business ANYONE can learn it.
It's definitely better and safer to stay on both feet in a street fight. Its stupid to wrestle or throw kicks in a street fight, you will likely get hurt 🤕 real bad trying that in the streets...
I disagree, Striking is HANDICAPPED in mma because there are careful rules on where you can’t hit. I agree eye gouging is probably too technical to be realistic in a real fight, but, there’s still the throat, groin, and kicks are reinforced by shoes

A punch can end a fight, a kick can end a fight, an eye gouge can end a fight, so too with throws, locks and chokes etc. what matters is how skilled the person is who is doing the technique, not so much the technique. If someone is really good at an effective fighting game plan they will be very difficult to stop from doing that plan to someone. If a skilled boxer has a great jab, he is going to hit you every time he throws it, unless you have skill to prevent him from doing this. If Frank Mir wants to take you down and break your arm then you are going to get your arm broken, unless of course you are one of those few heavyweights that are better than him.

It's not a wise idea to go to the ground in a fight. Yes you can be kicked / punched in the back of the head while on the ground by friends and being up close and personal comes with a gigantic risk of damaging an eye. It sure helps to be good at grappling, but at the end of the day a fight typically ends in 1 punch. Real fights(not duels) are dominated by boxers/strikers and not mma guys. Having said that, I do understand there are definitely situations where a fight can end up in a grapple situation and if one guy can grapple there's only going to be one winner of that situation.

The guy didn't even know he was fighting an extreme fighter out of J-Sect.

it's not so much having eyes in the back of your head while standing, but the idea that you will be able to strike them harder and knock them out so quick that you can then move and look for the next possible threat.

None of these stories actually happened though lol
And then you woke up, st-fu guy. No one cares 😂

Sad truth

It’s always best to avoid it.
Now I have this image in my head of a dude breakdancing off his back but somehow triangle choking 3 guys

Being on the feet is important in a fight because your not a sitting duck. Generally in a mallay situation everyone is vulnerable, so it is important to have a self preservation mindset and not indulge in the fight so to speak.
Never be passive, but just know it's never fair and best avoided.

Frank mir is a savage.

Because when a fight is groups oriented and it goes to the ground punts and stomps are a go to for most people and they can be devastating.

kinda fucked to do that to someone, u break dudes arm he clearly (more often than not) will not be a threat anymore, trying to cause long term dmg like that on purpose seems a bit much and yes I know any punch could cause that type of dmg often times that does not happen tho, most times you can read a person if they are a real danger to ur life you can tell if this guy is trying to kill me in this fight, if he is not and or if I break his arm and I can tell hes not trying to still come at me and attack me I dont see the point in trying to damage him further UNLESS your life is in danger even after the arm break which often times would not be the case and if it was you would be able to tell and then continue applying dmg
