One mans poison as the saying goes, I find this car incredibly ugly, so it could be brilliant to drive, but makes no difference if I can't stand looking at it.
I put a Eurosport cam kit and full Supersprint exhaust and headers on mine. Honestly--the headers seem to make less torque but more power up top--additional 2 MPH trap speed when I added that to the cam kit. So--Fully kitted--Probably 300 HP. My TRAP SPEED stock was 97 MPH. With fully kitted--106 MPH--so pretty near a S54. Added TC Kline suspension and I can do one finger wheel flick lane changes at 100+ MPH and it is SOLID. 48,000 miles--it aint losing any money--I'm keeping it forever.
I love this car. I think it is my favourite BMW ///M car in fact. I love that shooting break look, the practicality that the hatch gives, the rear massive arches. It's like a european hot rod. Nice video. It's good to watch videoreviews of rare cars or just cars that have some years ,when youtube didn't exist.
I absolutely love these cars. They are gorgeous and so well balanced with power delivery exiting a corner on dry pavement, but waaaaaaaatch out if it gets wet at all. That short wheel base can make power over-steer difficult to control, especially at lower speeds (ask me how I know haha). BMW tried to compensate by using those wide rear tires but it's still something to be aware of. Still an all time favorite.
One of my favorite cars ever. These came out when I was in college and working at a BMW/Porsche/VW dealership. The red interior was the best. Great fit and finish. A really special car. It was the best thing BMW made at the time. So exciting and raw to drive.
Great review! I've got this car's twin (silver s52 m coupe) with 140k that I bought 10 years ago as well. My logic was the same as this owner -- I could swing $23k for a mint S52 with 50k miles, but not $33k for an S54. The S54 is more high-strung and requires more (and more expensive!) maintenance. I'd be lying to you if I said I'd take an S52 over an S54 for the same price, but my reasoning was that the S54 was the collector car (it'll always be worth far more than an S52) but that the S52 was the *driver*. In the real world, the performance difference feels more like 20 or 30hp, not 75. I've never once regretting going S52 over S54. I love the car every time I drive it, and I, too, will never sell it! Been driving S52s since I bought my first E36 M3 15 years ago, and I've never once felt like it was not enough power.
TheSmokingTire Reid Conti Great episode and a great comment Reid... I'm a little biased however since i also own this cars twin! (or should that be triplets?) Mine is a well used, daily driver that often has bikes on the roof and camping gear in the boot/trunk. I can't ever imagine selling it, but would love to turn it into a track car and find a sweet s54 to keep as a street car - is that being greedy? Check it out below dealing with our typically shitty New England winter. I think the s52 is an awesome engine though, the low down torque makes it so driveable on a daily basis. With performance accessible all the time, you don't have to rev it out to get the best out of it like with a 54. Anyway, best car ever I'd say. mikekirtley.tumblr.com/post/112651416183/my-daily-driver-notthebestwintercar
So much truth in this statement. The amount of torque at low rpm's due to not only the s52 engine but the torque in the gearing as well is simply nuts on the s52 clown shoes. Also, without a doubt the s54 will require more maintenance, and cost a whole lot more when it goes wrong.
Agreed on the power difference being negligible in the real world. I made the same call buying a Z3 3.0 Coupe (M54) over an E36 M3 (S52) after driving both back to back. Low-end grunt is a good thing.
GravTsport you just saying this to make yourself feel better about buying the les potent one. Anyone who cant feel 60hp more our 5.5sec vs 4.8 doesnt deserve the full power
absolutely LOVE this car. it's so odd looking but when i was a young wee lad... i had a plastic toy car and it was this one. still remember loving the shape of it.
Classy looking classic! Always loved the looks of Z3 M Coupe. I have 2006 Z4 M Coupe and does not have quite the character of Z3. Exhaust sounds great, better than my stock which is quiet. Keep enjoying it!
Great car! More imoortantly...really great dudes here! This is one of the most enjoyable and refreshing car drives I've seen in years. Be well, keep safe brothers and many happy returns.
I had a friend with one of these. I've always loved them for the look. I assumed the 240hp would be a dog and the 333hp ( or what ever ) would be pretty fast. As this friend explained ( he actually bought and sold them ), the 240hp one (S52 I guess) is the one you want because its crazy reliable and the engine is as hard as a coffin nail. Case in point... His at the time had a 225shot of nitrous on the stock motor !!! Of course... I didn't believe it when he told me. But that's what he said. A week later, I was talking to another friend that happened to own a 640whp terminator, and told him how silly it was that person had told me he put a 225hp shot of nitrous on that car, and he had to have been weong about the jet sizes.'turns out... The cobra guy helpped him install that kit, and it was indeed a 225hp shot !!! That night the cobra and the M coupe raced and it was damn close to 130mph from a stop. Guess big tires in a light car with a 225shot out the whole helps, lol. He showed me the engine. Stock exhaust manifolds, stock intake, and everything looked stock. In the same breath he told me the 321hp ( or what ever newer ones ) actually had a very weak stock motor and they were basically throw away engines ( cheaper to buy a new one than to fix a broken one ). Either way... I walked away with a outlook on the old m coupes. I loved them anyway, but to know they can be fast and they are that over built as well, makes me love them even more. Now... If I can just fit a wife and four kids in one, lol.
Dates back to the 80s? I drive an E30, and the suspension design dates back to the 60s Neue Klasse (think 2002, etc.) Hell, the same trailing arm bushings work from something like the E9 to the Z3.
I have a 330i with the same engine and exhaust setup and can confirm the drone is BAD until about 3200RPM. Going up slight inclines is the WORST!! Drone goes away on highway in 5th gear going about 70mph / 120km/hr. Great engine though. Recently upgraded to an E46 M3 but the S52 is a fantastic engine and sounds so good. Keeping it as my winter beater! Great videos, love from Toronto
The cars design absolutely sings to me! I'm not a big fan of the Z3 front end but it absolutely works with the rest of the car. I spent a lot of time and money in a 92 Honda Civic hatch back and this is the adult version of my old Civic hatch for me. I want to find a 01/02 S54 but we'll see what comes available
I bought an Mcoupe new and owned for 2 years. Fun car, handling was just ok in stock form. I am a skinny guy and the door panel crowded my left side to the point of serious discomfort. I loved the looks. The 240 HP drive train was very nice.
The bmw dealer near me had one of these a few weeks ago. Dakar Yellow Z3M Coupe parked right next to a Dakar Yellow E92 M3. Got a great photo of the two side by side!
Always liked the the look and odd practicality of this car. Imagine a construction worker pulling up to a job site and getting his tools out of the hatch, then driving it on the snake in the evening. Plus it is a beautiful little nod to the Ferrari bread truck.
Mine just got totaled while it was parked on a street, quartered by a plumbing truck carrying pipe. I was almost crying when I left it for the last time at the collision shop. I was going to be buried in that car! Baby, I miss you!!
Back in the day I was Saving up for a car sports car. I narrowed it down to a Z3M or a 350Z. I ended up going with the 350Z but I did have a ton of regret because I really liked the Z3M. They’re such unique looking little cars.
Mojo thats a sign of whats gonna happen to that noob biker if he doesnt get off that mountain. poor kid couldnt even lean without looking wobbly. he should go drive around a parking lot and learn to turn before heading to the canyons.
KoG GoK The biker, was frankly an embaresment to other bikers, if you take the video at face value. However you don't know the bikers circumstances, could be first time on the snake, could be first time on that bike, could be new tyres, none of us actually know. What we do know is that he saw a vehicle being driven faster than he was willing to go, and moved over and let it past, which he should be praised for. Matt knows I'd like to see him do more bike videos, like he has in the past, but the fact is, Matt wouldn't be scraping the pegs round the bends on one of those either
I love how everyone either loves or hates the car. There doesn't seem to be an in between. I drive a '96 Z3 Roadster and I literally got angry when I had to look at a coupe. Now, there's only one thing that keeps me awake at night... will there be pristine S54 Coupes left for me to buy when I get a job. This car is already a collectors car. There's a youtube video somewhere of a private collection featuring Bugatti's, Lamborghini's and Ferrari's with a Z3M Coupe in the middle. Goes to show...
***** You can fit 255's up front with a lot of negative camber, no regard to rubbing the inner fender liner and specific brands of coilovers (KW V3 don't work, TC Kline do, etc).
ReventadorLP1500-2 It's a weird setup, for sure. Stock fitment is 225/245, and generally the popular combo has been 235/255 or 235/265. I'm running stock sizes right now because it was the only size available for Michelin Super Sports, but I had 235/265 on my previous tires.
That car looks sick! Love the wheels!! I will say that I have never encountered a stock BMW shifter that felt like it was worth a damn. They always have a rubbish noodly weak feeling shifter.
if you ever came to the uk, a one take in a welsh mountain road would be killer. as much as i love my impreza wagon, i'm sure i'd be outdone with something more special.
Wow, $18,000.00 for one of those? They are amazing cars, I own the roadster version so don’t think I’m saying that in a bad way as far as the car is concerned, but here in NC even the Z4 M roadster is about $9-$12,000.00 for a decent one! The Z3 M with the s52 is about $6-$7,000.00. Crazy how prices are different in other areas.
I have an '02 with the S54 and bone stock. I did own another that was just like this with the '52. These cars, for shoe fetishists, are just perfect. Cool owner.
I drive my Shoe in the canyons all the time - its a the most fun BMW I have owned for canyon driving - its all about momentum and corner speed with these cars - if you can get one do it! it will teach you how to drive.
At 3:40 Matt says "...Everyone once in a while I'll hit one..." and took a moment before I realized that he wasn't speak about the motorcyclist, but the shifter. Then at 6:10 I found it funny when Matt says "...and here's the understeer-corner... (tires squeal)... and none! Nice."
Torque thing : S52 = 320 N·m (240 lb·ft) @ 3800 rpm VS S54 = 350Nm à 4900 tr/min On the 3.0i (M54 B30) = 300Nm à 3500 tr/min S52 engine is > 3.0i but just by a bit.
Im lucky enough to drive both s50b32 and s54b32 versions on the same road right after each other and I can honestly say I prefer the s50b32 version. Its just more raw, which suites these cars. Interestingly enough also, I have dragged a new M4 in the s50b32 z3 and they had about the same performance. Im sure after 150kph that would be different but really for its a bout the low down fun, because who really drives everywhere at 150.
I just lost my M Coupe to a plumbing truck (while I was parked!). I LOVED that car, and planned to be buried in it. lol But getting parts for it was a nightmare. I needed a new stock wheel, and the dealer was telling me 4 months!! Same with headlights, bumpers, etc.
These are epic, but it took me a while to like them. It's kind of an oddball car. It's a two door sport wagon. Last two door wagon I know of was the Vega Kammback, and that was circa 1975, and that wasn't really sporty, haha. 3100 pounds is pretty light for a stock car. Could easily drop it to 2900 or less with some stripping and gutting. Those wheels are pretty neat too, remind me of R35 GT-R wheels.
Somebody you actually had a laugh with and who spoke as much as you did? Hallelujah! Get this guy back again! (With a different car obviously...)
he's got a bad ass suzuki samurai you can check out on his wheelwell page. we may do that one eventually
Sweet.
ya most of the rich Asian kid's cars Matt has driven tend to be FOBs ( teheheh yes that is kinda racists) and don't talk too much ;)
Steamin Steven It's not racist. It's called white privilege and anyone who says otherwise is a race baiter, right?
J Lang how can being a kid of a wealthy Asian family be associated with 'white privilege'? race bating, huh I was trying to be a smart arse.....
I've always liked the BMW M Coupe, I don't understand why it gets the hate it does.
I'm with you, beautiful car that deserves more lovin'(IMO).
I love it!
One mans poison as the saying goes, I find this car incredibly ugly, so it could be brilliant to drive, but makes no difference if I can't stand looking at it.
Reminds me of an old floppy shoe for some reason...
Where does it get hate? Everyone I've heard says it's really cool and unique
8:16 an insect gets absolutely destroyed
"they're not friends if they cost money" absolute madman
One of my fav BMW Designs. I wonder if Ferrari designers looked at this when they designed the FF.
agree.. I don't understand why bmw doesn't make a new one. The 3.0l and Z3m are so expensive now.
SuperC55AMG I'm so in love with this car
Oh the 4wd FF? Yes definitely. This was on the top of their list, I heard. So close in performance.
Why would they? Ferrari made the Bread box...go do some research
Thank god that fly didnt commit suicide on the camera right at the beginning.
What a polite bug, waited until the last turn to go splat
Surprised the car handled and accelerated that well with two big guys in there, I can just imagine one light dude
I put a Eurosport cam kit and full Supersprint exhaust and headers on mine. Thank you for having a M Coupe on the show. I really like seeing them around.
Saw one of these a long time ago and was instantly mesmerized by it. Its so goofy looking that I neeeeed one.

Reid Conti a rising tide lifts all boats. Once the S54 cars start to take off in value, the 52's will follow.

Just found this video - thanks for showing some love to the S52 family
Best looking BMW I think I've seen.
mark y 2nd after the 850csi
I'm mesmerized by those rear fender flares . Awesome car.
how can you not like the drone sound... i love that part of the sound from inline 6's especially!!1!!!!
I'd even take a 3.0i Coupe. Love these things.
absolutely LOVE this car. it's so odd looking but when i was a young wee lad... i had a plastic toy car and it was this one. still remember loving the shape of it.
That German and Japanese joke about the last time them working together kinda went over the other guy's head haha. Nice car!
Finally, finally a car, worth mentioning and videoing it. Cool owner too.
Classy looking classic! Always loved the looks of Z3 M Coupe. I have 2006 Z4 M Coupe and does not have quite the character of Z3. Exhaust sounds great, better than my stock which is quiet. Keep enjoying it!
Japanese and German together.. when have we seen that before? Damn Farah, you dark.
Japanese?,Z3 another J Nagashima masterpiece? 🤔
Great car! More imoortantly...really great dudes here! This is one of the most enjoyable and refreshing car drives I've seen in years. Be well, keep safe brothers and many happy returns.
Super hyped to see this in my feed! Love BMW's so much oh so pretty and that straight six sound is amazing. Hope more people bring you more of them!
Steven should be a recurring guest host. IDK why but its like him and Matt are long lost brothers.
I had a friend with one of these. I've always loved them for the look. I assumed the 240hp would be a dog and the 333hp ( or what ever ) would be pretty fast. Let's be honest...Matt needs to upload everyday, every hour. I truly think this cause his Tuned and Smoking Tire is awesome.
I love the look of this car
Dates back to the 80s? I drive an E30, and the suspension design dates back to the 60s Neue Klasse (think 2002, etc.)
Hell, the same trailing arm bushings work from something like the E9 to the Z3.
I love these styles of the BMW Z, the older ones like the one in this video. Great video man, jeep up the great work.
always loved the Z3M's... glad to see one on you're channel! thankyou
"They're not friends if they cost money." lol... gotta remember that.
always loved the Z3M Coupe, shame we didn't get all the engine options in RHD in the UK
Damn, I really love the body style on these rides. That long hood looks awesome. Just from it's looks alone, it really looks like it'd handle great.
Daaaamn Diavel, back at it again with the slow turns
I don't care if it does look like a hi top sneaker, I've always liked these cars.
I dig that car. I typically drive fbodys of many generations but I love the look of this car and the way I expect the weight to lay. props owner man.
I've ALWAYS loved this car. So cool and unique. Great vid as always Matt.
Seems like you two would get along great
Awesome car, excellent vid..it looks incredibly agile and quick through the snake unlike any of the other videos I've seen yet
The bmw dealer near me had one of these a few weeks ago. Dakar Yellow Z3M Coupe parked right next to a Dakar Yellow E92 M3. Got a great photo of the two side by side!

LOL, I assume the biker is a newb
Chicken Soup lets hope not; the Diavel is a ton of bike for someone who doesn't have much experience.
The fly at the end was a noob too.
Mojo thats a sign of whats gonna happen to that noob biker if he doesnt get off that mountain. poor kid couldnt even lean without looking wobbly. he should go drive around a parking lot and learn to turn before heading to the canyons.

Looks like he was just going for a relaxing cruise actually, not everyone tries to ride fast in the canyons
I know that these cars never got great styling reviews, but I must say...I really like them.
I love how everyone either loves or hates the car. There doesn't seem to be an in between. I drive a '96 Z3 Roadster and I literally got angry when I had to look at a coupe. I honestly prefer the sound of the S52 over the S54 unless the S54 has a carbon airbox.
225/275? That's crazy. I'd guess 235/255 would work better, but what do I know.
I was wondering about that, I wonder if it has anything to do with the lack of steering feel they were talking about.
***** You can fit 255's up front with a lot of negative camber, no regard to rubbing the inner fender liner and specific brands of coilovers (KW V3 don't work, TC Kline do, etc).
Sounds like pretty tight margins! Not my taste but if you want a real canyon carver I could see why you'd do that.

Yeah but the 275s make that ass look even better lol
These are such cool cars, I'd love to own one someday. And I hope you recorded a video in that E36 which was parked there Matt!
That has always been one of my favorite BMWs
I love the design! takes a look or two to get used to but nothing looks like it!
Great video! One of the best sounding cars I've heard in a while
That car looks sick! Love the wheels!! I will say that I have never encountered a stock BMW shifter that felt like it was worth a damn. They always have a rubbish noodly weak feeling shifter.
Rock on man! With the Magnaflows! They Sound great! I'm also rocking those! The S52 is a smooth motor and sounds great! That Inline 6!
The cool factor of the z3m coup is astronomical 🔥
The foreplay with the motorcyclist was hilarious😂
Ok so here's one I admittedly do not know much about. Cool to see something reasonably different.
Z3 M Coupe has always been one of my favorite cars to look at, regardless of the engine choice.
love this car its looks are timeless
What a good road. You need to do more here :)
"I'm never selling this car!" lol...until October 2017. At least we don't need to take it for a test drive now. Love these cars.
Matt, know your wheel game buddy!
Work Meisters are classic jdm!
Love them on "the breadvan"!!
Matt- any change you'll be out in NY doing this? I'd love to meet up at Bear Mountain...
Matt digs the shoe?
Badass status: CONFIRMED.
3100 pounds. Hell no. More like 4000 pounds with those two in it
lol these dudes weigh 500lbs combined. This car would fly with just my 155lb skinny ass in it!
Even bloody real estate groups are out to hate now, nobody’s safe
Crazy damn car. I've never seen one in the flesh in Australia.
I'm 6'5" with a roadster, it's my DD. 36" inseam. All a mater of how bad do you want it.
I actually find it a lot more comfortable than most, however.
Love this car. Almost bought one but bought an s2000 instead due to all the sub frame issues on the m coupes. Still love it though, beautiful car
if you ever came to the uk, a one take in a welsh mountain road would be killer. as much as i love my impreza wagon, i'm sure i'd be outdone with something more special.
I've always wanted one of these cars
Wow, $18,000.00 for one of those? They are amazing cars, I own the roadster version so don’t think I’m saying that in a bad way as far as the car is concerned, but here in NC even the Z4 M roadster is about $9-$12,000.00 for a decent one! The Z3 M with the s52 is about $6-$7,000.00. Crazy how prices are different in other areas.
I always liked this body style on the z3. I'm not a roadster/convertible fan.
Hey Matt, for the ventilation, take off that wooly mammoth jacket. I love the BMW shoe.
My 540i e39 with the 545 SSK Is spectacular. It's an excellent short shifter
love the bug on the window
don't know how i missed this video!! Love shoes and yours sounded great!
I love this show - from enthusiasts for enthusiasts!
One of the most beautiful cars ever.
Seems like this dude has never smiled or been happy in his life, he so straight faced and doesn't seem to want to talk at all.
growing up when this car came out it always reminded me of Darkwing Duck's car
I have an '02 with the S54 and bone stock. I did own another that was just like this with the '52. These cars, for shoe fetishists, are just perfect.
Cool owner.
This car is awesome. And in black it looks like the Batmobile!
I drive my Shoe in the canyons all the time - its a the most fun BMW I have owned for canyon driving - its all about momentum and corner speed with these cars - if you can get one do it! it will teach you how to drive.
Ive fit a whole e30 rear seat (upper and lower) in mine! Very awesome cars!
At 3:40 Matt says "...Everyone once in a while I'll hit one..." and took a moment before I realized that he wasn't speak about the motorcyclist, but the shifter. Then at 6:10 I found it funny when Matt says "...and here's the understeer-corner... (tires squeal)... and none! Nice."
nice matt.. like others.. I've always really dug the look of these.. fun!
Torque thing : S52 = 320 N·m (240 lb·ft) @ 3800 rpm VS S54 = 350Nm à 4900 tr/min
On the 3.0i (M54 B30) = 300Nm à 3500 tr/min
S52 engine is > 3.0i but just by a bit.
Same with headlights, bumpers, etc.
i really love this series
These are epic, but it took me a while to like them. It's kind of an oddball car. It's a two door sport wagon. Last two door wagon I know of was the Vega Kammback, and that was circa 1975, and that wasn't really sporty, haha.
3100 pounds is pretty light for a stock car. Could easily drop it to 2900 or less with some stripping and gutting. Those wheels are pretty neat too, remind me of R35 GT-R wheels.
Almost every rwb Porsche runs these wheels
8:40-8:42 u can see the ///M racing colors in that lens flare in bottom right corner of screen!
