Steve Coll on How the U.S. Pursued Withdrawal Over Peace in Afghanistan & Let the Taliban Take Over

  • As Afghanistan spirals into a humanitarian crisis after the abrupt U.S. withdrawal earlier this summer, we look at years of failed U.S. diplomacy that allowed the Taliban to seize power and leave the small nation in a state of disrepair. A New Yorker magazine investigation shows how the U.S. repeatedly undermined the Kabul-based government in a rush to leave the country. “I’ve been reporting in general and around Afghanistan for a long time. I was still shocked by the degree of cynicism that the United States often brought to this endeavor to seek peace, particularly during the Trump years,” says New Yorker staff writer Steve Coll, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter who has covered Afghanistan for decades

This is all past now. The present reality is mass starvation in Afghanistan. We as Indians should go all out to send food and medicines to Afghanistans to save our Afghan brothers and sisters from starvation. The world can find other ways to control and handle Taliban but not at the cost of millions of Afghani lives.

He criticizes the American administration for not "prioritizing" peace negotiations between the Kabul govt and the Taliban. But the Taliban made clear that they had no interest in that. When you're going to finally leave a place you've invaded and occupied, you have little leverage. But at some point we had to leave. We'd been there 20 years. Even if it made sense to invade the country in the first place to go after Bin Laden, there was no coherent reason for staying after that rationale was no longer relevant. But, fear not warmongers, I'm sure they'll find a another place to occupy soon enough
