I met, interviewed and photographed Ahmad Shah Massoud in Takhar Province in 1991. Everything I've ever seen indicates that Massoud was a great man.
Some questions for Bearden.and the CIA: Massoud survived and beat back nine Soviet and Afghan Communist incursions between April 1980 and June 1985; where was the CIA's support during those 5 years? Massoud's Panjshir Valley was located within striking distance of the Soviet's vital Salang Highway supply line; again, if the CIA recognized this, as Bearden himself acknowledged was the case, why wasn't there more support for Massoud? And when it became obvious that the Pakistanis were using Pashtuns like Hekmatyar (and later the Taliban) for their own ends, why didn't they provide more support for the north to counterbalance Pakistan?
The bottom line, in my opinion, is that the CIA missed an opportunity. To attempt to blame Massoud for this is inaccurate and unfair.
