- As Afghanistan faces a dire humanitarian crisis, we look at how more Afghans may die from U.S. sanctions than at the hands of the Taliban. The U.S.'s attempts to block support for the new de facto government have prevented vital funding from flowing to the nation's civil servants, particularly in education and the health sector. Dr. Paul Spiegel says conditions in the hospitals he visited in Kabul as part of a World Health Organization emergency team are rapidly deteriorating, and he describes the lack of heat and basic amenities as winter descended. “There’s been a drought. There’s food insecurity. And all of this has been exacerbated due to this economic crisis and due to lack of the U.N. and NGOs being able to pay people in the field,” says Spiegel. “What we see now is that it’s not the Taliban that is holding us back. It is the sanctions,” says Jan Egeland, secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council.

This is why America is so hated around the world. And rightly so. We never met a country we didn't want to invade or strip of resources or interfere with the politics therein and now the United Nations tries to clean up the moral disaster the US has made in Afghanistan over the last 40 years. I so WISH my Country actually was a democratic good guy, but we absolutely are NOT to be admired. UN should kick out the US.

This reminds me when the US forced the world to impose sanctions on the country where I originally came from during the Saddam regime. When sanctions where imposed there, more than 500,000 children died, while the brutal regime stayed in power, monopolizing on the sanctions. When will the world learn from its previous mistakes? or more accurately when will the US government and our democracies learn from our own past mistakes?
What I would give for a reporter to ask Afghan women if they feel appreciated by the west's howling about them in regards to this. Obviously they never did.

When Americans vacated Afghanistan with an indecent haste, many of us here in Pakistan wondered what was the hurry? Rather than overseeing a peaceful transfer of power, and even then maintaining their policing-presence for a few months, they just flew off in a great haste. A country that they bombed, strafed, killed even marriage parties, droned innocent men and even children ,"by mistake" they never felt even a minor human obligation to arrange some humanitarian reparation? It was suspected even in Aug 2021, that by blocking the $9b and cutting off banks from Afghanistan, they were perhaps out to use economics as the newest tool of operational strategy! 4 months later, it is proven beyond doubt that geo-economics is now being used with a vengeance to punish a brave nation which refused to be enslaved. Whither the "humanitarian considerations" by the greatest proponent of 'human rights'?

Based on the history of Afghans relying on Indian Subcontinent for surviving for 1000 years, Afghanistan will need humanitarian assistance for decades if not for centuries. World is not ready to commit feeding Afghans indefinitely. The burden by choice of helping Afghanistan is destroying Pakistan next door.

70% of the Afghan economy was supported by International donations. Women and children's rights are incompatible with the core beliefs of the taliban. The taliban will never grant this group permanent rights rights unless they abandon their core beliefs. This would end their reason for existence as they see it. It's not gonna happen. The consequences of the sanctions are devastating to the people of Afghanistan, But how can you presume to tell other people they have to financially support and assist the spread of a group that has such toxic beliefs. The money that is frozen did not originate with the Afghan people but from their donors. You seem to be rather generous with other people's money. What's next? Are you gonna suggest that we donate to the CCP's efforts to place their people in concentration camps? Negotiating with the nazis insured the holocaust was going to happen. The human catastrophe currently happening in Afghanistan will pale in comparison to the death and suffering that will occur if the taliban is allowed to consolidate and spread their power. The only humane action is to help the people escape from Afghanistan.

The people of Afghanistan choose the Taliban as their leaders. These people would not get out on the streets to save their freedoms and rights. They knew the culture; they knew females would be the property of men. We all knew what was going to happen, and the people welcomed the Taliban into Kabul. I am sorry, it is their problem to resolve, we tried for years to help these people. And unfortunately, they chose this life to live.

There was no need for either the 20 yr war nor the US sanctions. Immediately after 9-11, the then gov't of Afghanistan, the Taliban, offered to extradite Osama. But the US wanted more suffering.
the Taliban refused to hand him over twice during the initial bombings they claimed they would hand him over after the second refusal by turning him over to a third party IF America could prove he was behind the attacks. So to summarize...the taliban wanted to hold what amounted to court proceedings during a ceasefire so they could protect the more vital targets America was trying to hit. It would have been foolish to oblige their requests under those circumstances and would have set the American invasion bak decades.

Sorry you are having to go through that. When our government won't even help our vets, disabled and fixed income here in our country, why would you think they would help others. Right now these people are going without housing, medicine, health care, food etc. Really can't do much on approx. 800.00 a month.

Taking off sanctions and letting Afghanistan have access to it's money won't hurt the American people, it will help the Afghan people recover from almost constant warfare since 1979. I am not surprised, isn't the Taliban, Pakistan and several Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar taking taking any credit for the failed State? So much many in those oil rich countries and this is happening.

I wish everyone would desire nobody be denied the same human rights as themselves. It'd be nice if the priority of enforcing human rights became a communion type global viewpoint.

Jimmy Carter's See-Eye-Aye started the funding of the crucifixion of Afghanistan....in hopes of getting the USSR to invade.
It worked. Then Reagan and the Saudi's poured million$ amounts of dollars into weapons and training for religious extremists in Afghanistan.

Why would Americans blame themselves for sanctions? Let Taliban helps afganian people. There are large poppy fields in Afganistan and they made a lot of money from opium bussiness so that is why sanctions had to be imposed. Every country in th world is facing drug problem as big problem and problem with drug addiction cannot be solved by police but only by people letting say themselves they will never use dangerous drugs anymore. Afganistan would change if rest of the world will refuse their opiate bussiness.
