I had never heard of this person before, but it turns out he comes from a very illustrious Shanghainese family. Both his father and brother were famous Peking Opera performers, and both were persecuted during the Cultural Revolution for their craft. His sister is Tsai Chin, Bond Girl in 'You Only Live Twice' and also featured in 'The Joy Luck Club' as Aunty Lindo. His mother came from a prominent, wealthy family of tea merchants.

His mother was a famous socialite back then in Shanghai, Born into a very wealthy family doing banking business of some Scottish descent. she later on fell for his father who's already a married man with 3 kids, but they ran away and had 6 kids together eventually, as we can imagine how furious her family was, his mother even made a public statement in newspaper that she's gonna cut the tie with her own family, that was 1920s

I only know Mr. Chow for the peaking duck. We always get one on special occasions. It's also where celebs go after awards nights. Didn't know he was an actual person. When I saw the thumbnail for this video I thought, good lord they are making a Hangover spinoff of that Ken Jeong character.

Right, I just watched this and thought it was a comedy or film buff doing first scenes from all movies but as I watched it, it clicked in. I really didn’t know he was the Chinese actor in all those 60’s movies I’d see and wonder was he still acting along with his sister as a kid back then. It still didn’t click in about Mr Chow. I knew of a new Chinese restaurant in Knightsbridge that has a spiral stairs in the window as we walked passed all the time and I’d gaze in. Kinda made me laugh as I was use to Chinatown back in the early 70’s but Mr Chow had non Chinese staff waiting on tables. Very strange back then to see this.
One day on tv back then, there was a kids program that filmed in there and they sang a song and I still remember some of it to this day. It went like this….’What are you cooking Mr Chow, what are you cooking and how…’ that’s all I can remember unfortunately. Based on that and we ate out a lot back in the 70’s in London, wearing my little velvet suit and Bally shoes in some very lovely places my parents took us too and I said let’s try Mr Chow and we did. Even met Mr Chow himself there when we dined and my parents had a quick chat with him. Bought back lovely memories from back then thinking just now…..
I really enjoyed this documentary, I didn’t know he was such a talented artist, I just assumed he was famous for his restaurant in London, amazing and well done indeed! 👍🥂

My dad had worked for Mr Chow, he worked in his London & New York restaurant. I met Mr Chow a few times both in NY and London when he used his brand name for a restaurant in Seoul. I’ll always have fond memories of the holiday parties we had at Mr Chow when the restaurant was closed. All the kitchen staff & family would get together for a cookout.

Yup. What white or white-passing people need to understand is that yes everyone has their issues and stresses in life but POC have an extra added anxiety when they present themselves in public or any sort of social situation that you simply wouldn't understand. What he said about taking off his glasses, not wearing "luxury clothes" or looking 100% put together is so true. A white man or woman can get away with looking dishevelled. (it's edgy, it's fashion or he's in an indie band) but you can't say the same thing about a non white person. We just have to try harder. The point being = there is a privilege you have and it's okay to acknowledge this and talk about it.

    He’s worthy of study.
The trick is not to be like him but to take what he learned and be like you.
Much of what he knows is transferable.
All of creation learns from each other.
Pride brings it to an abrupt stop!
Born into fame yet he suffers as a servant in a land not his own while absorbing the slings and arrows of being different.
He was offered 2 choices , food and laundry.
    What’s it gonna be?
    FOOD!
    A binary choice.
His advantage (we all have one!)
Was a diligent work ethic in a land where it wasn’t a requirement.
    He beat everyone.
In a lane all his own.
So he now can name his price.
(Just because you won’t pay $1200 for Chinese food doesn’t mean somebody else won’t! Just sell to the ones that will!”
    So many lessons.
But there’s one lesson that opens the door to the rest….
You do what you gotta do in order to get what you wanna get!
Don’t know what you want yet?
    Look around.
Spend a month looking at what other people do then say “I wanna be that!”
Then take your licks and be it!

Well that and it's outrageously expensive with much smaller portions for the same food you get from PF Changs, located in cities where restaurants serving both authentic Chinese and elevated versions of Chinese American food at a lower price point are abundant and accessible to non-Chinese foodies. However, I appreciate his restaurants hark back to the time when the above wasn't true, and that his restaurants continue to prove that Western consumers will pay the same fees for Chinese food they will for upscale Italian and French restaurants if it is presented the same way and not as "cheap."
