I know this is an old video but your mention of the love of Christ and just your general kindness and joy has made this one of my favorite channels. You’re the bomb Piet! Glad to know you’re a brother in Christ.
The cartridge i choose as my do all caliber was 7mm-08. Light and heavy bullets, factory ammunition, high BC bullets, low recoil, easy to find/resize brass from other calibers and so on.
That’s a good one. I think the 308 beats it out for me. Although if I’m limited to only one, I’d want something that shoots heavier bullets with a bit more oomph, so I might have to go to the 30-06.
243 ..... 7-08 ..... 308 ..... brass can be used for multiple popular calibers . Each are ballistic performers . Reasonable recoil . Military round or brass . Huge assortment of projectiles to choose from in already made rounds or hand loaded . Main reasons most own one of these
My choice would be .308. While it is not the best at any one thing, it can be used for pretty much anything and it would be pretty good at most things and would cost less. Key advantages: 1) Factory ammo is widely available in an equally wide range of projectiles and loadings at good prices, 2) Components for reloading are just as widely available and priced with a large library of well tested loading data, 3) Barrel life is significantly longer which also drives down the cost, 4) You can ethically hunt pretty much anything with it. 1st runner up: 6.5CM - It has many of the same key advantages as .308 however it just scores a little lower. I couldn’t bring myself to choose it because, while it is better in precision shooting matches, the factory ammo is a little more expensive than .308, barrel life is less than .308 and it hits a little less hard than .308 at the distances I would be comfortable ethically hunting at. Because of these things I just couldn’t choose it as my “1 do it all caliber/cartridge”, though with some skillful debate someone might be able to change my mind. There are two that I would have really like to have chosen but just couldn’t in the end because of some of their disadvantages. 7mm-08: I would love this one because it sits almost perfectly in the sweet spot between .308 and 6.5CM. In the end I couldn’t choose this because of factory ammo availability and cost. It just isn’t popular enough to get the economy of scale and availability as .308 and 6.5CM. 6.5PRC: I totally understand why Piet chose this as it really adds the extra bit of velocity/range/energy that the 6.5CM is missing. I just couldn’t choose it because, in the US at least, factory ammo is harder to come by and is 2-3x more expensive than 6.5CM and .308 and reloading is more expensive as well. Also the shorter barrel life is a killer, again adding additional expense. 6.5PRC ends up being just too expensive for me to be able to choose as my “1 do it all caliber/cartridge’ it even though I really wanted it to be my first choice. It think we are just a few years to early for this to be “The One”. Talk to me again in 5 years and we will see. Maybe the cost of ammo/reloading will have dropped enough by then that only barrel life will be the the issue.
I dinged my optic on my 30.06 during deer season and didn't have time to evaluate the weapon. As such i used the rifle i bought for my son. The Bergara hmr 6.5 prc for elk. Two bullets later and 2 elk later. I may not go back. I am sold on its capability. The 2nd elk was at 564 yards and dropped like a ton of bricks. But the bottom line is shot placement made that possible. This particular rifle makes shot placement breeze. Bottom line, in my hands this is an amazing cartridge.
I'd go with the oll 270. It's flat, fast and can run up to and a tad bit more than 150gr in some case's. It is also more available here in the states than the 6.5 prc by far when it comes to being in stores in the sticks. The 270 doesn't get smoked balistically either, inside of 400 yards.
6.5PRC is an excellent choice. Really enjoyed load development for it as well. Can be taken in quite a few directions on application depending on load.
Indeed it is, what a nice round it is. You know it’s amazing how many guys are bitching about “oh you can’t find ammo for it.” I can’t wrap my head around owning a precision rifle BUT THEN expecting to go down to the store and buy ammo for it off the shelf! Haha. Maybe I was naive or asleep but I always associated reloading your own PRECISE ammo for your PRECISE rifle as one package and assumed that’s what pretty much everyone else did as well. Guess those guys on the store shelf ammo will never experience the full abilities of their precision rifles. Seems like such a waste
Waring alert for another delusional 30-06 fanboy! Guiding in Alaska since 1989 for Brown bears and Yukon Moose I have a nice salmon spawning stream I want to take you to with a lawn chair to sit there just before dark and through the night with a deer guns 30-06. In the morning I will come looking for your dead body and most likely a whole lot of torn up body parts! I have killed brown bears here and let some go that are 1200 to 1500 pounds. The reason I let these Hugh bears live was they had fur rub patches from just coming out of the dens in the spring. What is fun and educational is not letting the old bears know you are there to watch the bears moves and habits.
7mm-08 is my pick. Lots of bullet selection, it will shoot 100gr to 162gr easily. You can use the 7-08 to kill anything from rockchucks to moose and never feel over or under gunned.
I own rifles in over a dozen different calibers but if I had to choose one best overall it would be the 7mm-08. Versatile, accurate, efficient, and readily available almost everywhere... it's a no brainer!
I would go 7mm rem mag, lots of bullet choices, ammo availability (not right now), easy recoil, great for hunting up to elk size game, and great barrel life! Morning from east Tennessee
I agree. 7mm rem mag is the best all around. I reload with the 195 bergers & it is amazing. I want to try a custom 284 Winchester or 284 shehane. You have any experience using them??
Also agree. Its my favorite and I've got a wide range of different caliber rifles. If I had to pick one to do it all for medium to large game the 7 would be it.
I actually guessed the caliber correct, partially because I followed very similar logic when I decided to buy a rifle in 6.5 PRC a few months ago. It is a great cartridge!
Reminds me of what my grandpa used to say about all the new "amazing" fishing lures. "They are all designed to catch the fisherman not the fish" (Its all about sales) This is what I think of when all these new "must have" cartridges come out like all the PRC stuff.
It’s certainly my favorite all around cartridge. All tho my .257 Weatherby is a stud !! And with the new bullets available in 130grans or better with 7.25 rate of twist barrel. 😮 the down range capability is absolutely mind blowing.
I would have said 7mm Mag, but your right, it can wear you out. If I was to pick a 6.5, it would be a custom 6.5x55. Ammo is available, and when loaded to modern pressures it will perform as well as any fancy new cartridge's.
I dont get the recoil everyone speaks of with a 7? I can shoot it all day without worry. Put a brake on it if its a super light rifle maybe. I shoot a 6lb rifle with a brake (300wsm) and hardly any recoil although it is snappy. Cheers
What can wear out ? Not any hunter is going to wear out any rifles because they aren't shooting matches that cause barrels to get hot and thousands of rounds off ammo fired
Here in the West, I’ve been a 7 mag man for years because of elk but at the range, it’s hard to psych myself away from the recoil. I now tell new hunters to check out 6.5 prc
If you think the light recoil of a 7 mm Rem mag is bad, then never shot the Tikka T3 ultra-light I own in 7 mm Rem mag. I have one of them ultra-light Tikka T3 with the skinny fluted barrel in 7 mm Rem mag that I like allot because it is feather light and so light on my back, I don't even take note it is there. Shooting heavy stoked reloads with 175 grain bullets it's a little beast to shoot!
Ya but, if you went to one of your shooting buddies and said, "hey, can you lend me a few rounds?" They'd likely have 308, or even 6.5 CM. Highly unlikely they'd have 6.5 PRC. I reserve the right to be wrong.
I have a 6.5 PRC and its great! The problem as of now, is the reloading stuff. You cannot find much in the states right now. I have alot but some people getting into it are finding problems finding ammo and reloading stuff. Just my 2 cents. Its an amazing round.
Large rifle primers are just GONE. Small rifle primers are starting to show up. I even bought some Petrson brass in small rifle primer pockets in 308 so I can still go shooting. Using small rifle primers in 308 you can't use stick powders, or you get delayed firing Here in the Pacific NW powder is eased up then can be found.
Phoenix, Az here! 6.5 PRC all the way! Shooting 620 yards with ease! But also 100 yards easily ! So many different variations and Im using a 26inch Shilen barrel that is , well, like Pete say, "phenomenal ". Lol
30-06... still one of the best and most versatile. You can push lighter 150s with reduced recoil and blast but unlike .308 you can also push a 200+ gr. pill that drops larger game DRT. As someone who lives in the PNW US the 30-06 is my "one caliber".
Excellent choice. I went with 6.5 PRC in a Ruger Precision Rifle. With factory 147g ELD MIT shoots .24” groups at 100 meters. FYI that’s my first bolt action and I bought it because of you! I want to do precision matches. Does have MDT hardware and Vortex optic
I will stick to my .308 Win. I have shot this for over 40 years, reload my own, and it has never let me down. It will knock down anything in North America, and ammunition is usually readily available even in country gas stations. I do not shoot over 300 yards because the forest is far too thick in Northern Ontario, and I will not accept wounding and losing an animal. Stay safe, happy shooting and hunting.
First place 6.5x55, second place 7mm rem mag... The PRC is just a bad copy of the 6.5x55, The 6.5x55 was made by GOD. This S.A guy made this video for the yanks, every one out side the USA piss on creedmore and PRC 6.5 copies.
I agree 👍, been shooting a savage 110 Ultra light 6.5PRC in a MDT LSS with their 7 round mags for a few months now, sub 4 inch groups at 800m. Lots to love about this setup!
I own dozens of rifles in various calibers. I have two in 6.5-284. It is a magnificent round and very accurate having won 1000 yard matches. My next rifle on my wish list is the 6.5PRC. It is also very accurate and packs a wee bit more punch than the 6.5-284 while producing less recoil. I think your choice is very wise for a do it all caliber.
My AR 10 I chambered the super match Pac Nor barrel in 6.5-284 Norma. The second AR 10 upper is in 6mm-284 win. Head spacing the bolt to both uppers I can change out the uppers fast to go to one or the other calibers
6mm rem. I’m a reloader , but if I didn’t Id say 243 because you can get on the shelf. Around 55 grain bullets all the way to 105 approx. Can shoot matches, varments, coyote, and other small game. Any deer or antelope . Also black bear and elk at close range and broadside careful shot. But all shots should be carefully placed right! Light recoil for kids and people recoil sensitive. It’s in the middle and covers tons of applications.
The 6.5 PRC is just about impossible to get ammo for. I have 6.5-284 which is just as hard to get ammo but is ballistically similar to the 6.5 PRC. Presently building a 6mm Creedmoor on MDT chassis, see how that turns out.
In Oregon the 6.5-284 Norma ammo never has been hard to find and even with 308 or 30-06 all gone the ammo in 4 brands of 6.5-284 Norma has always been sold and even reloading brass is easy to get. It must be a regional issue to find ammo in 6.5-284 Norma. I own my AR 10 I chambered in 6.5-284 Norma that turned out to be the perfect match for the AR 10. It has worked so well the 6.5-284 Norma in the AR 10 it is one of chamber and build AR 10 uppers on to sell along with my AR 10 uppers for sale in all WSM cartridges.
6 mm improved. Superflat shooting light recoil wide variety of bullets. And it kicks all the other 6 mm ass. 87 grain 3200 feet per second. 1000-yard chucker. Been shooting one sense 1996. Started out as a 6 mm Remington was absolutely awesome. Chambered it to an Ackley 40 degrees shoulder. It is an absolute laser. If you can see it you can hit it. Krieger Barrel HS Precision stock canjar set trigger goodnight Mister Chuck.
There’s a lot of good choices depending on what’s important to the shooter. Range, purpose, animal size, barrel life, etc. For myself, I choose the 308 Win. Tons of reloading data, long barrel life, wide bullet selection, bolt guns are compact, readily available in an AR type rifle (depending on where you live) and the list goes on. It only gives ground to the 6.5CM past around 300-400 yards and not that much until past 500. Like I said, it really depends on the shooter’s priorities. Great channel BTW 👍
It’s about as close to perfect as you can get. Out to sub 400 yard ethical hunting ranges. The big fad now is bragging about 1000 yard game kills. Which just tells me how bad they are at you know, hunting?
I go with 270 Win. Outstanding ballistic performance, wide selection of projectiles for hunting, target shooting, etc. AND it it a calibre that is easy in the shoulder, cal be shot all day long and I’ll stop there. Aha, so I wasn’t far off. 6.5PRC and the 270Win are very close indeed. The PRC will certainly fill the gap when using the round for competitive shooting, however, for hunting, the two calibre are nearly identical. I could be wrong but this is just my opinion. Down here in New Zealand, I would have no problem finding factory ammo in 270. The same could not be said for 6.5 PRC, yet. Great video and I think this will be the topic of conversation at the pub tonight.
I own only 1 rifle which is a Sabatti Saphire, the cartridge is use for this thing is the RWS 6,5X55 140gr, which is enough to bring down everything i am allowed to hunt in Germany.
I too would have to go with the 6.5 PRC. My 6.5 PRC shoots light out, was easy to load for, is pleasant to shoot, and I can hunt or shoot matches with it. To all of the people saying “good luck finding ammo for it”, well that’s pretty much the same story for all of the popular cartridges in hand gun or rifle. I have shot, own or owned many rifle in cartridges ranging from 22lr to 50 BMG, and would agree that the 6.5 PRC is an outstanding all around cartridge. I was always a huge fan of the big 7’s due to the speed and ballistic coefficients over the 30’s, without the extra recoil the 30’s get with heavy long high BC bullets. But since owning a 6.5 PRC I seldom ever shoot or reach for the 7 rem mag, 7 STW, or 28 Nosler. No need. The 6.5 PRC does all I need it to do with less recoil. And the 6.5 Creed is a very anemic cartridge for bigger game IMO.
6.5 Creedmoor meets all requirements so far. After answer: 6.5 PRC is tough to find factory ammo, I can only think of Hornady, Nosler and Federal in limited loadings, my other issue would be barrel life
I can’t imagine relying on buying factory ammo for a precision rifle. That defeats the whole purpose as there isn’t a factory round that can touch a hand craft precision load . When you compare the two , there is no decision to be made. That bares out not just from my experience but all the pro shooters around the world. They load their own of course.
I get more enjoyment and success (whether target shooting or hunting) from my 6.5 PRC. I use my 224 Val and 6.5 CM for practice, but 6.5 PRC gets the job done. I have two. A GA Precision for hunting and a Big Horn action JP chassis for PRS/target.
6.5 PRC is a perfect all around cartridge. I built one on a Tikka a bit over a year ago. There is a lot of new ammo and components coming out soon which should help it's popularity a great deal.
6.0PRC has better ballistics....for me 7mm PRC is the sweet spot, 308 and 6.5PRC next level as crossovers but 6mmPRC for cheaper PLR....I dont need cannons like 300's or 338...If I did want full LA I think 7mmRM and that would piss off 300WM guys! There are plenty of others for different purposes...22/250 fast, 7.62x39 or 300 Blackout subsonic, 223 cheap, 17HMR looks more fun than 22.
My one rifle is a .260 Remington, it is my choice...dead accurate out to at least 400 yards, but I like the challenge of getting closer than 300 yards so I don’t shoot farther than that...ballistically it is basically even with 6.5 CM and PRC so it works for me.
I have a 270 custom build Savage, a M10 FLCP-SR 308 Savage (Tac Driver) and a 6.5CM Savage... all LH. Now I plan on taking a 270WSM and rechambering it into a LH 6.5 PRC in an XLR Chassis...
A do it all caliber I'd choose is 30-06, my handloads push 150 grain bullets at 3200 which is 300 win mag ballistics, 110 grain bullets are handloaded to 3800fps for varmit loads, I can go up to 240 grain loads for heavy game if desired and I have chamber inserts that allow me me to shoot 32 pistol cartridges in my 30-06 for small game or practice
300 Winchester Magnum. Load it up with heavies....or go light and fast....load it down for reduced recoil. Put a muzzle brake on......shoot it a bunch. I have owned many and its the most flexible cartridge I own. Also, 45-70 is nice for work inside 150 yards....and it takes birdshot!
I own one , love it. On deer and elk it’s been deadly, shoots fast ,flat and carries good energy at extended ranges. I must say I hand load and gives some advantages some people do not have. 140 grain bullets over 3100 FPS.
For one person to choose 1 cartridge would be in factoring where the person lives and hunts to cover type of game hunted to type of terrain hunting in. So, No one cartridge isn't a realistic option. I have been a professional hunting & fishing guide since 1976 working in the U.S Pacific NW to Alaska SE and High Arctic. When out on any trail in Alaska because of brown or black bears I have always with me either a CZ 550 on 9.3x62 Mauser loaded up with heavy load reloads or I have a Winchester Mod 70 in 338-win mag, and I like to have with me my AR 15 in either 7.62x39 or another upper in 6mmx45. Other times I have the AR 15 with a 223 upper then take along the CMG 22LR rifle conversion. I will have in the truck a 12-gauge shotgun auto loader for spruce grouse that are really tasty birds fried on a pan. If I am hunting close to the truck or from the jet boat, I have the AR 10 in 6mm - 284 win and I have with me the other AR 10 upper in 6.5-284 Norma. I just did an AR 10 upper in the wildcat cartridge 375 - 300 WSM so that is going to be really nice to hunt with. The AR 10 20 round magazine hold 9 375 - 300 WSM cartridges so I can carry those cartridges ready to go in the steel magazines.
257 wetherby is the best all around! Harder to find, but blazing velocity, and enough weight to carry and knock down. Especially at the velocity it produces. More hydrostatic shock than 6.5 I believe. Look it up folks.
I have 3 6.5 Creedmoor's. But here in Alaska for hunting, my 7mm Rem Mag is my go to. My 6.5 creedmoor did sledgehammer a caribou at 282 yards with barnes LRX 127gr. Jesus loves them too! And he died for all.
I would say 308 it hits hard and in Australia its price well and you can get it in so many different types not sure in South Africa but i think you went with 270WIN
I have a Kimber in 6.5 CM and I only use it for hunting but I hunt in South Ga beanfields with lots of 300 + shots. Killed a big 9pt last year at 438 yds. (my personal longest shot) with 143 edx hunting factory loads. The Kimber shoots 3 of them into a dime at 100yds. I am going to have a Daniel Defense 6.5 PRC in the new hunting rifle line (less than 6 to 7 lbs and 7 to 800 $!!!) they are coming out next year.I can't wait plus it's good to know the plant manager ;)
6.5 PRC is a great choice. For a while I wished they’d chambered it for a 7mm in the same case pushing 180 bullets at ~2850 fps. Then they came out with the 7mm PRC which would be my choice for do-all cartridge (though it is a tad hotter than I was thinking).
I'm a .30 guy BUT that's only because that's what I'm familiar with. I was introduced to 7-08 a couple of years ago kind of by accident. Friend of mine has a Browning A-bolt in 7-08. He brought it to me saying it wouldn't fire consistently. I tore the bolt apart and sure enough the firing pin was bent. I order a new pin, reassemble, take it to the range. (he left me a full box of ammo) I didn't know what to expect recoil wise. I touched off the first round and fell in love. The recoil is low yet you know there's some steam behind it. It grouped very well for factory ammo that was a bit old. (just under 1 moa at 100 yds) Heck yes I fired all 20 rds. That's why they put 20 in a box right? ;-) (I did get him a fresh box to replace what I had shot) Yeah, I might have to get me a 7-08 just because.
7mm-08 Even if you can’t find it. Pick up 308 brass properly size it, neck turn it and voilà you got probably the biggest bang for your buck with .284 bullet selection and performance.
@@briansewelloutdoors8404 when it comes to performance not alot of difference today between the 30-06 vs 308. Personally I like the versatility of a 308 usability in a gas gun and a bolt gun
I think the 6.5 PRC is a good choice, but to be honest, _any_ of the .30 calibers and 7mm calibers are just fine too. That new 7mm PRC looks so good on paper that I'm holding off buying anything new until it starts getting adopted by the major manufacturers.
300 ULTRA MAGNUM hands down! You can shoot a vast array of weight bullets and has the power to stop game! The only problem is as in your country Africa there are minimum requirements and the 30 caliber doesn’t meet it but it is by far the most all around cartridge.
7mm anything is going to be the best caliber. How it’s chambered could be an interesting choice. 1 rifle for everything in Ireland 🇮🇪 would be a simple .243 with a 1-8 twist. You could do anything with it. From competition to vermin controle and red deer hunting. I have done it all with .243 with appropriate bullet choice.
6 mm ARC works for me, economical, not much powder, not a barrel burner, 6 mm perhaps the widest variety bullet types of any caliber, also wide range of size about 55gr. to 120gr., brass availability .220 Russian, 6.5 Grendle, and 6 ARC. great for target shooting no recoil, spot your own shots, good to 1,000 yards and a bit beyond, supersonic out to about 1,300 yards. Great varmint round, and small to mid size big game cartridge including whitetail deer and black bear. Perhaps even an elk at close range with a well placed shot, but I'd hold back on that until I was on the verge of starvation. LOL
LETS GOOOO!!! I absolutely love my 6.5prc and it is by far my favorite cartridge. Now I would disagree with the availability of factory ammo at a reasonable price but I was hoping from the beginning that you would say 6.5prc and also since it was the cover for this video. The content is great and I hope you do a 6.5prc light weight hunting build with a carbon fiber barrel and a video on that!
One thing to consider ... In some countries especially in Africa your brass head stamp has to match what is engraved on your rifle barrel. So that being said if you are planning on traveling from one country/continent to another take that into consideration. That rules out almost all wildcats including the SAUM's unless your barrel matches EXACTLY what your brass says. I had a coworker who saved up for years to go to Africa with his 300rum. He spent an afternoon in customs trying to explain that 300rum on his custom barrel was the same thing as the 300 Remington ultra Mag head stamped brass. Needless to say he had to use the guides rifles.
Great video. I'm a new subscriber. My choice would be 6.5PRC. I currently have a 6.5 Creedmoor, 270, 223, 7mm, & a 30-06. I'm considering purchasing a new all around rifle and I'm leaning towards the 6.5PRC. I live in Saskatchewan, Canada
Great choice, you may want to hold off on the 6.5 prc. The new 7mm prc are starting to make their way to dealers. Little more recoil but this is going to be a game changer for deer size and larger animals. Check out back fire on UA-cam, he has some great info. This is just my opinion, I love all calibers.
@@averageoutdoorsman9342 30-06 more powerful and versatile if hunting large game further but 308 is a good choice as well. If hunting with a 308 just get closer.
@@rockie307 dumbest thing I've read today. .308 shoots significantly flatter at long ranges and carries most of its energy with it. 30-06 packs a punch with the tradeoff of being notoriously inaccurate past 250 yards (not to mention its insane drop curve). There's a reason the U.S. military got rid of the 30-06. There's also a reason the U.S. military has used .308 in its sniper rifles for decades. Neither of those reasons are because the 30-06 performs better at long range. In fact, the opposite is true.
@@averageoutdoorsman9342 guy, you are OUT OF YOUR MIND! EIGHT rifles chambered in 30-06 -Springfield (plus an improved 30-06).You live in Alaska; it the bigger the better cartridges , and the '06 is right in there with a 180/200 grains bullet.
My opinion is the 6.5 prc would be an excellent choice for a all rounder but wat disqualifis it for me would be barrel life especially in south africa with licensing issues my pick would be 7mm AI or the south african 7mm Tombi
I loaded some 129 Hornady Interlocks for my two 6.5 PRC rifles but I haven't had a chance to shoot them yet. I think you'll change your mind when the 7mm PRC is available. Efficient case with an efficient round...it shoud be AWESOME. When I get mine, I'm going to load some Barnes TTSX in it and conquer the world. Okay, I'm just kidding about conquering the world but I have a cow elk trip in the works.
Hey Pete, I would choose the 6.5 PRC to do it all. Why you ask, good ? I'll tell you why. It's the Magnum of the 6.5 creedmoor which I love. It's that simple. Hope this helps your subscribers. Have a great one and ignore the nay sayers, ya know the haters, they all suck 😉
Something in 7mm is what u need to do it all. High bc bullets for long range plenty of punch on large game in higher bullet weights and plenty of selection for deer sized game
Between it being new and the panic buying that's going on right now it's pretty scarce at least in Utah where I'm at kind of got the short end of both sticks. But where it is a round introduced and being pushed by Hornady it's definitely not going to go away.
I went hunting deer in south Texas on a ranch. They really didn't like that I was using a sub 30 cal but I used a friend's 243 to take a deer at 200 yards. Impacted under the chin and the deer dropped where it was standing.
I had a buck this year stick his head out from behind a tree at 110 yards, I had his head and a little neck to shoot at. Put one right under his chin with my 243. I have zero problems dropping deer in their tracks with that awesome underrated caliber.
I own a 6.5 PRC good luck getting factory ammunition. Two factory rounds readily available both from Hornady the eld-x and eld-m and not readily available in smaller gun shops. 6.5 creedmoor would be a far better all around choice as it’s the most popular chambering these days.
Another great video. Perfect timing because I am looking to build a 6.5 PRC. Can’t wait to see the next video. I wanted to go with the MDT ESS chassis but its not available for the defiance ruckus xm action. Guess I’ll have to go with the ACC🤘🏻. Also want to use carbon fiber proof barrel. And definitely want to try one of your muzzle breaks. I like what you’re doing!!
Naw. It's a rarity with two factory options both from Hornady...way to specific for me as well. Don't worry my European friend there is no ammo here in the U.S. either. for any round at this point..
@@gw9853 We dont have the problem with ammo supply except maybe some American stuff. This cartridge just not popular at all and I guess European manufactures are not making them.
I know this is an old video but your mention of the love of Christ and just your general kindness and joy has made this one of my favorite channels. You’re the bomb Piet! Glad to know you’re a brother in Christ.
The cartridge i choose as my do all caliber was 7mm-08. Light and heavy bullets, factory ammunition, high BC bullets, low recoil, easy to find/resize brass from other calibers and so on.
best hunting cartridge there is. anything from coyote to elk.
That’s a good one. I think the 308 beats it out for me. Although if I’m limited to only one, I’d want something that shoots heavier bullets with a bit more oomph, so I might have to go to the 30-06.
Not enough velocity for me! The 7mm caliber is a good start though!
Anything between 7mm-08 & 280 AI to .30-06 is hard to beat.
The reason I went with the 7-08 is that I also use it for PRS competitions and with the 7mm I can get higher BC freedom seeds
243 ..... 7-08 ..... 308 ..... brass can be used for multiple popular calibers .
7mm saw is really interesting. It launches heavy bullets almost as fast as a 7rem mag. They’re getting 2900+ with 168 VLD bullets in a 24” barrel.
Personally, I'm a fan of the 7mm-08. It'll do just about anything I would ever need a bolt gun to do. And it's reloader friendly.
cant find 7-08 ammo or components anywhere right now or at the very best slim pickings
Yes.! My choice was between 6.5 prc and the 7mm Remington Magnum.
My choice was the 7mm Magnum out of the two.
The 6.5 PRC is basically a 264 Winchester magnum without a belt.
I agree with your choice Piet! 👍🏼
I own a .308 as well as a 6.5 PRC.
Yes, I agree. The 30-06 is the perfect round. From mice to monsters, it will do it all.
It might be a little much for mice.
I'm a big fan of 7mm rem mag or 30-06. 270 can go most things very well too
@@bivouaqc you can never make something too dead.
You nailed it with the 6.5 prc! If I am still alive when we are finished taking our country back, I will build one!!!!
Got to go with 7.
If recoil is an issue, go with 7mm-08 AI, if not, then one of the 7mm short magnums.
708 for life!!!!!
@@christiaanlotz love the 7-08. Just seems right balance for lots of things. Especially hunting.
7mm rem mag hands down!!! Best cartridge that's ever been made to do a little bit of everything...
300 prc
Totally agree - My Rem 7mm mag is my favorite in my safe, and gets used the most.
agree
I actually guessed the caliber correct, partially because I followed very similar logic when I decided to buy a rifle in 6.5 PRC a few months ago. It is a great cartridge!
Reminds me of what my grandpa used to say about all the new "amazing" fishing lures. "They are all designed to catch the fisherman not the fish" (Its all about sales)
This is what I think of when all these new "must have" cartridges come out like all the PRC stuff.
A suppressor will change your life.
7 SAUM over a 6.5 prc all day and twice on Sunday.
270 for sure or 30-06 . You I can find those ammunition in any store . Perhaps not during covid 19 .
Piet: "You can get .308 anywhere"
Me looking at empty shelves at local sporting goods stores: "Nope."
Oddly, I see 6mm Creedmoor everywhere still. Only cartridge on the shelves.
Much less 6.5 PRC I didn’t see it on any shelves when we had ammo available.
Ya but, if you went to one of your shooting buddies and said, "hey, can you lend me a few rounds?" They'd likely have 308, or even 6.5 CM. Highly unlikely they'd have 6.5 PRC.
I reserve the right to be wrong.
We got a shit ton of 308 everywhere here
@@tiputipu777 we dont have shit in washington
I have a 6.5 PRC and its great! The problem as of now, is the reloading stuff. You cannot find much in the states right now. I have alot but some people getting into it are finding problems finding ammo and reloading stuff. Just my 2 cents. Its an amazing round.
Ammo is a hard thing right now. I picked up a 6.5 prc earlier this year, I can’t wait to go out hunting with it, later this year.
Large rifle primers are just GONE.
Small rifle primers are starting to show up.
I even bought some Petrson brass in small rifle primer pockets in 308 so I can still go shooting.
Using small rifle primers in 308 you can't use stick powders, or you get delayed firing
Here in the Pacific NW powder is eased up then can be found.
I agree completely
Excellent choice. I went with 6.5 PRC in a Ruger Precision Rifle. With factory 147g ELD MIT shoots .24” groups at 100 meters. FYI that’s my first bolt action and I bought it because of you! I want to do precision matches. Does have MDT hardware and Vortex optic
I load and shoot .308. Its not perfect but it covers all the bases!
7mm Rem Mag custom built. 180's at 3000, and it does everything.
I was going to say 7mm rem mag. Interesting choice!
That's my all around go to rifle in Alaska
That is also what I assumed he would say.
Hard to beat a 7mm Rem Mag for all around go to in my opinion. Downfalls to a target shooter however are recoil, long action and belted case.
First place 6.5x55, second place 7mm rem mag... The PRC is just a bad copy of the 6.5x55, The 6.5x55 was made by GOD. This S.A guy made this video for the yanks, every one out side the USA piss on creedmore and PRC 6.5 copies.
I’d go 7mm/08. 6.5PRC loaded ammo is pretty scarce. 30/06 would probably be my second choice, based on the added extra jam, and ammo availability.
Ha, had the caliber right. And ironically I was thinking 6.5 PRC before I ever even hit play to begin with. Good choice!
Oooppppsss. Sorry guys, I won't disturb the host next time his making a video for us. 😂😂😂😂😂👍🏻👍🏻
C’mon George. Good grief! 😀
I agree 👍, been shooting a savage 110 Ultra light 6.5PRC in a MDT LSS with their 7 round mags for a few months now, sub 4 inch groups at 800m. Lots to love about this setup!
Except barrel life.
6.5 PRC is hard to get ammo for because the gun is flying off the shelves. Scheels had a few cases now.
308-- I am pondering the 280ai--- shells are limited though--- but for all around cannot beat it.
Great channel BTW 👍
.308 is the best I’ve ever loaded and used for accuracy, penetration, low recoil and power for hunting.
It’s about as close to perfect as you can get. Out to sub 400 yard ethical hunting ranges. The big fad now is bragging about 1000 yard game kills. Which just tells me how bad they are at you know, hunting?
I think harvesting an animal from 1000 yards means you’re good at hunting.
My guess was def going to be 6.5 cm. Close but no cigar!
he said no magnum, yet PRC is just magnum verson 6.5 creedmor :).
I own only 1 rifle which is a Sabatti Saphire, the cartridge is use for this thing is the RWS 6,5X55 140gr, which is enough to bring down everything i am allowed to hunt in Germany.
6.5 prc's is a bit of a barrel burner 30 06 would be a good choice hello from Alberta Canada
Either 6.5 Creed, or 243 Winchester...
EDIT - I chose 243 because I've built & own two.
What twist rate are your barrels on your 243 Winchesters?
@@tonygslc801 My AR-10 has a 1:10" twist in the IBI stainless 18" tube, my Savage bolt-gun w/MDT chassis has a custom 20" Bob Jury barrel with 1:8".
.300 Win mag! Pronghorn to moose & everything in between, many bullet choices, range & availability-period!
My Tikka compact tactical rifle in 260 remington is all I need. Accurate and deadly out to 500 yards.
7mm Mauser. Unfortunately not common these days, but still very capable, and soft shooting.
I have a 270 custom build Savage, a M10 FLCP-SR 308 Savage (Tac Driver) and a 6.5CM Savage... all LH. Now I plan on taking a 270WSM and rechambering it into a LH 6.5 PRC in an XLR Chassis...
I’m choosing the 280 ai, runs with the 7 mm mag with the same recoil as a 257 way mag. A very efficient cartridge.
.308 you can buy it anywhere but not with empty shelves, I also have to say the 6.5 creedmoor and no I didnt say my dads 30-06
My guess was the 7mm rem mag!It has always be my favorite!

A do it all caliber I'd choose is 30-06, my handloads push 150 grain bullets at 3200 which is 300 win mag ballistics, 110 grain bullets are handloaded to 3800fps for varmit loads, I can go up to 240 grain loads for heavy game if desired and I have chamber inserts that allow me me to shoot 32 pistol cartridges in my 30-06 for small game or practice
.270 Win. but you would need a custom rifle with a 1:8 twist for the heavier bullets at longer distances.
7mm-08! It’s totally underrated.
Just very difficult to get in South Africa, which I could get one
I had a bad experience with the 7mm-08 on an elk hunt. Don't take quartering shots with the 7mm-08 on an elk
I own one , love it. On deer and elk it’s been deadly, shoots fast ,flat and carries good energy at extended ranges. I must say I hand load and gives some advantages some people do not have. 140 grain bullets over 3100 FPS.
What’s your load recipe? That’s great speed!

How to build an ideal, all-around 6.5 PRC rifle:
Buy a Bergara B-14 wilderness with the mini chassis.
6.5 PRC is a great choice. For a while I wished they’d chambered it for a 7mm in the same case pushing 180 bullets at ~2850 fps. Then they came out with the 7mm PRC which would be my choice for do-all cartridge (though it is a tad hotter than I was thinking).
100% agreed

@@cody182005 mind if I ask what barrel length you're running and how far off pressure signs you are?
That's why they put 20 in a box right? ;-) (I did get him a fresh box to replace what I had shot)
Yeah, I might have to get me a 7-08 just because.
7mm-08
Even if you can’t find it. Pick up 308 brass properly size it, neck turn it and voilà you got probably the biggest bang for your buck with .284 bullet selection and performance.
.308 is hard to beat for an all around cartridge. Once you get into extreme long range though, it’s not amazing.
When compared to other long range calibers its not even considered passible anymore.
30-06 has it beat for hunting

That’s just as bad as someone saying anything 6.5 is the best!!! That’s just ridiculous!!!
Also, what’s your thoughts on the ec barrel tuner?
@@markkev105 Thank you for your advice.
I don't own one but the 7mm-08 is the 1 to rule them all. It checks all of your boxes 70-195gr bullet high bc low recoil.
The 30-06 is my first choice, second to none the 308.
30-06 has been made obsolete. Stay with the 308.
Lekker
7 Saum is one I’m interested in! Love the 7-300!
What about a 30-06
Jou can change the grains of the point so you can hunt anything
I’m surprised it doesn’t get more love with the wide variety of ammo types.
7mm Rem mag. Shoot it all day and hunt anything with it. cheers from germany
308 non negotiable if its going to be do it all, get it all, buy it all, end world all, 308
The slow08 is garbage 😂
If this was 2003 Id agree with you.
6mm is the present and the foreseeable future.
Something in 7mm is what u need to do it all. High bc bullets for long range plenty of punch on large game in higher bullet weights and plenty of selection for deer sized game
I’m in the USA and I’ve never once seen 6.5PRC anywhere ever
It's too New 😉 to see🙈
Give it a minute. The same was true for 6.5 cm a few years back. Now the options out number the .308
I haven’t seen anything but steel cased on shelves lately...
6.5 prc is everywhere here in the southwest wal mart even carry’s it
Between it being new and the panic buying that's going on right now it's pretty scarce at least in Utah where I'm at kind of got the short end of both sticks.
My perfect rifle - Sako S20, but i went for 30.06 springfield instead for 6.5 PCR. Reason ? availability in central europe.
Great choice similar to my Sako 85 Hunter Stainless chambered in 30-06 Springfield 💥
Some of the provinces in Canada do not allow Deer hunting with a .223/5.56.
Got 6.5 prc been built for that all round reason, specially now Lapua brass coming for reloading . 👍
I like the versatility of the .243.
This sounds like something that most men would do when convincing their wife they need a new gun. 😂
Ou Boet, you nailed it with 6.5 PRC. I have one myself and starting my build this winter by me, maar sommer daar by jou 😉😉
Good luck finding 6.5 prc. I leave in Hungary and hard to find that cartridge. Maybe other part of the world but not in Europe.
Also not available in south africa
If you choose Germany for a hunt, do not loose your 6,5 PRC Ammo, otherwise you are lost ;)
