    Oh my gosh! You used the “wrong” oil, lol. Thanks for the video, I purchased one of these equinox second hand and just wanted to see if there was anything asinine GM did to make the oil change challenging. Luckily it’s about as straight forward as they come. I have an AWD model, so as a note for whatever reason they take six quarts and not five. Anyways, thanks again.

      Is your car a fwd or awd? And the manual says to use full synthetic not synthetic blend.

    • @SKPcars
      @SKPcars  4 роки тому +2

      This is a FWD and i would stick with the recommended oil. When we bought the car we were told it came with blend, I stuck with that. If the manual says synthetic, that is the best bet. The key is not to switch back and forth to different types of oil. the wear characteristic in the motor get use to the type of oil used. Each type of oil has different benefits and drawbacks. As long as each oil change you use the same stuff it won't overall effect the performance. The only notable different is as the engine gets over 100k miles you need to start slowly increasing the weight of the oil based on use.

  • @crlaw75

    That was a combination I used on my vehicles a long time ago; Castrol oil and Fram filters.

  • @Skleptical

    You're talking about using a non-synthetic blend because it's what you've always gone with while you pour from a container that says "synthetic blend". Then in your comments you 180 and say you used a synthetic blend from the get-go because it's what your dealer advised. Think I'll look for a video with some consistency to it instead of this one now.
    EDIT: along with shameless profit links to synthetic and full synthetic oils lol. Disliked and avoiding.

      Wow, sorry the video left you feeling that way. This is one of the earliest videos on my channel, it is also one of the most popular. I used blend, if i said non it was a slip. That car always got blend in it which was recommended by the dealer when we bought it. The arguement from others was the book said full syn. The "shameless links" in the description have only been there a few months since we have had the ability to put them up. I put both types depending on what people wanted to use. Generally if i make mistakes in the videos now i try to catch them and put a correction of text on the screen. We are very small channel just got monetized in may, got amazon affiliates april. While i try to answer questions and help where i can i totally understand you not wanting stay with our channel. Best of luck to you.

    🔴 Bought exact same vehicle used. They used normal oil. You suggest using regula right? Just double checking

    • @SKPcars
      @SKPcars  3 роки тому +1

      I won't take liability for what you put in your car. I will say if it has regular oil it is not good to switch oil types. If your car is still under warranty i would suggest using whatever type they recommend, to not void your warranty. I used regular oil because when we bought the car that is what we were told was in it. I always have put it in and have not switched oil types. I do all my oil changes on my cars. There are differences between oils but the advantages and disadvantages are long debated and very minimal in most cases. If you have no plan to deal with dealership warranties and you know it has regular oil in it. It would make sense to keep the same oil in it. That is the best answer i can give.

    Good video. Dexos 1 Gen 2 oil for petrol engine, and Dexos 2 for diesel. You can use 5w30 or 0w20. There should be a dexos label on the oil cap to remind you. Does the oil bolt require a new washer?

    • @SKPcars
      @SKPcars  4 роки тому

      the 0w20 should be used in colder climates, helps with easier starts on snowy days. if i remember correctly the bolt has a washer built into it. if you are using an aftermarket bolt it may come with a washer.

    • @SKPcars
      @SKPcars  Рік тому +1

      Yes they all come rated with 0w20 weight oil as the engine becomes older and you start seeing oil lose at oil changes you are supposed to slowly increase the weight of the oil. By the time the engine let go in this car i think it was up to 10w30. If you run it with 0w20 with high mileage you will burn a lot of oil by the time you get to the 10k recommend oil change window.

      Fram over the years has had it share of good and bad stories. i have notice most of the bad stories tend to fall into urban legend. i have used may filters over the years and the only problems with any filters i have ever had ended up being user error. i end up using Fram the most because it is easy to find and readily available. I have never had a problem with them. i wouldn't use a PH filter in a performance application there are better filters on the market for that. as for using a manufacturers brand filter, you can use them but they are normally more expensive and no better then an aftermarket filter.

      you don't need a dexos approval unless you are under factory warranty. you just need equivalent performance rating. We use what were told when we bought the car. We have never had an issue with the performance of the engine and it would not make sense to switch it to something else after all this time. that would be bad for the engine.

      We started having acceleration issues which turned into a few of the repair videos. The car had some misfire codes. Those repairs didn't work we had a mechanic friend who has the ability to go through the turbos system look at it. While it was there a his mechanic friend, who was a tech a chevy looked at it. He said, "tell them to get rid of it, the engine is bad, we have 6 of these in for the same thing right now." We took his advice and got rid of the car. It had about 130k on it. I hoped this helped with your question.

    • @SKPcars
      @SKPcars  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, this has been talked about a few times. Dexos is the Chevy brand. You don't have to buy it. I used what i was told at the dealership which was a semi synthetic or syn-blend. I believe manual calls for synthetic. The manual i have calls for a 5w-20 but use whatever weight your manual says. Understand too that oil weight slowly pushes up as engine gets older. I have 110k mi. on that car now i am up to 10w-30 because it burns about 1/2 quart of oil every cycle if i don't. As for brand buy whatever brand meets the requirements for your engine. Taking into account mileage age of the engine. Also don't switch between types once you use one type. It hurts the engine, they get use to running 1 type. They don't like when you go from synthetic to straight oil or vis versa.
      Thanks for the comment, i hope it helped.

      @@SKPcars Question... So because I bought my 2018 Chevy equinox used, it has now 95,500 miles, the cap says 0-20 Dex-tos.. so what the it being at that almost 100,000 miles mark, wouldn't I put an oil for high mileage?...

    • @SKPcars
      @SKPcars  2 роки тому +1

      You should but you also don't know how the car runs or has been treated. The equinox we have burns oil, which is a sign of engine wear. We started on 5-20, moved to 5-30, and then to 10-30. I would recommend driving through a full cycle. Checking the oil regularly. When it gets time to change the oil, check it before changing it. If you are quart low, step it up an oil weight. Older model cars the engine tolerances were lower by 100k miles you would be at 20-50 oil. Newer cars have tighter tolerances and you can do damage by putting too heavy of an oil weight in too early. I hope that helps answer your question.

    • @SKPcars
      @SKPcars  Рік тому +1

      yes it may but depending on how many mile you have on it you have to increase the oil weight for wear. if it still has less then, lets say, 50k miles on it. you are probably good. modern cars are made with tight motor tolerances and require a thinner oil. as the motor wears you have to thicken the oil to compensate or you will get what called blow buy and you will burn oil. by the time we sold the 2018 we had it had 130k miles and we were using 10-30w. i would recommend running your normal oil change cycle with whatever oil you run, if you are burning oil increase the weight. best of luck, thanks for the comment. make sure to subscribe if you haven't already.

      @@SKPcars YOU REALLY NEED TO RUN OIL WITH DEXOS ON THE LABEL....JUST LIKE WHATS ON THE OIL CAP....

    • @SKPcars
      @SKPcars  3 роки тому +1

      ok let's talk oil. Dexos is a GM engineered rating given out to mostly GM manufactured oil. Dexos is a blend of oil generally it is a synthetic. Is the Dexos rating required in engine oil? depends on the circumstances. This is a GM car and it is under warranty, it would probably require the dexos rated oil but it would also require the ACDelco oil filter to be covered under warranty. Oil has a few different rating systems the one required by law is the SAE system which you will find in the circle on the back of any oil bottle. there is conventional oil which has some benefits and there is synthetic oil that has other benefits(too long of a subject to go into). there is also synthetic blend which the idea behind it is you would get the benefits of both types of oil. Engines like the type of oil they are given. if you give an engine one type of oil it is generally a bad idea to mix or switch. usually the problem you have is something like the Teflon in synthetic oil reacts with molecules of conventional oil causing a build up that will gum up an engine. back to our car, we were told conventional oil. i have always used it in this car, i do all the service on this car. We don't use warranties because we don't break our engines. if i switch it now with close to 100k miles on the car it will do more harm then good. if your car has a dexos oil and you are trying to keep your car under warranty please keep using the same type of oil. once you are out of warranty you have no need to spend the extra to get an oil with the dexos rating unless it makes you feel better about your engine performance. You only need an equivalent oil performance rating which will normally come with a synthetic oil. This car does not use it and i won't be switching it to it.

    You should use ramps instead of a jack because you've trapped old oil by raising the drain hole higher than the right hand side of oil pan. Also there are numerous online videos showing how Fram filters suck.

    • @SKPcars
      @SKPcars  3 роки тому

      i would believe that if the drain pan was the lowest point on the middle back of the pan. most cars are towards the passenger side so it help to go towards the drain screw. in this case the bolt is in the middle back but actually has two lower areas on either side of it. a little oil always gets trapped, in this car more so. it helps unload one of those pockets by leaning it over more but a jack or a ramp really wouldn't be enough to make a difference. some oil stays in the car and it is ok if a small amount does. unless you have an engine issue which would require the pan to come off and at that point there are far worse problems then a little old oil in the car.

    • @SKPcars
      @SKPcars  3 роки тому

      Oh sorry i missed the fram part. I actually already addressed this in an earlier comment but there is really nothing better or worse on any filter. the differences in filtration is very small, except with a bottom of the line house brand filter. fram is not known for making a high filtration filter on the PH line but they have the TG and DG filters that are on the higher side. the is not a race car i would want better filters on a car where high horsepower and tolerances are important. it is also a matter of personal tastes. i like fram, i use fram. i have tried other filters and had problems. i have never had an issue that wasn't my own fault with a fram.
