I was 17 when this song came out. Daddy was in prison until I was 11. He always pushed me to enlist or go to college. The day this song came out I sent it to him. That man bought me my first guitar. Five minutes after sending him this, he told me "Son, maybe we're pushing you in the wrong direction". I played this for the school talent show. "hey there weird kid in you high top shoes, sittin' in the back of the class; I was just like you" was my senior quote. This is the song that defines my life. This is me. This is my life in five minutes and twenty-four seconds. This was the first time I was understood by own parents. and that's damn rock and roll.

I stand with you. My soulmate from the age of 19 til he killed him self a couple of yrs ago.
He was a huge part of my life and all of the great memories we had. It’s hard I give credit to anyone that is struggling over the death of a loved one. It’s not easy and you have to keep yourself somewhat saying keep moving forward even when you don’t want to.
I’m sorry about your son , he passed too soon. Just lost my adopted daughter at the age of 27, on Christmas Eve. She was about to graduate with a nursing degree and a back up in philosophy. Just 6mo after my soulmate killed himself.
You have to be a strong person with a strong belief system to get through that mental anguish. So peace & prayers to you!

My grandfather died at 60 a little after midnight. . .I was 19 and in my senior year of HS.
Months after he passed, my grandmother brought up this song and it made me cry bad. Me and my grandfather never quite understood eachother.
After listening to this though I know this was his way of saying its ok we werent super close, and now I feel spiritually close to him like the father I never had.

Our youngest so was placed in our arms when he was 5 days old. He was born addicted to meth and heroin and had Asthma and RSV. He struggled so hard to overcome his addictions and to breathe. Night time was much harder on him. So many nights I walked the floor with him holding him and praying for a miracle. The only time at night that he didn't cry was if this song was on a constant repeat. It soothed him. Almost like it gave him hope. As a full grown man this song makes me cry knowing that it soothed my son helped him find peace and allowed him to rest. He is now an amazing 5 year old and this is still his favorite song.
My cousin who was like a brother to me just died and this song just explained him, he was 20 years old and we had a benefit dinner to help my aunt and uncle pay for the funeral last night and we stood there holding eachother and balling our eyes out as the band played this song and it's now my favorite song for many reasons

I cannot believe it has been over 5 years since this album came out. Church's world continued to explode after this album. Chief was the fireworks after his first 2 albums, Mr Misunderstood sent him to the stratosphere and his ride just continues. Thank god for the Church Choir and all the friendshps that have been established around the world. Thank you to Eric Church, the ECB, and Headquarters staff who keep the ball rolling. Love you all. My son was a punk rock guitar player who learned Springsteen music for me.
He died in 2012 in a motorcycle accident. I wish I could have listened to this with him...I have memories of me and him at warped tour( (no, I wasn’t there for me, it was him)...I ended up front row at Good Charlotte while he was out looking for me. He ended up playing Warp tour with a group years later before he died. Music is music just as people are people. Music connects us

We live in a small town in the south where football and baseball reign. Well, my son doesnt play sports and is interested in other hobbies (which he succeeds in). He gets bullied for it and kids threaten to kill the animals he is so successful with. My son is brilliant. . He is Mr. Misunderstood.

I have been listening to ERIC CHURCH for a while now, I'm trying to remember exactly when I really realized how much he is so far above the rest in his music ability ,he puts all he has in it,and it shows ,he never has had a bad song, although I like some better than the others,and this song being one of those. To Mr. Understood, and to ALL of the Understood individuals that can relate to this song. I received this copy of this song from a friend, a dear friend from a long time ago. This song seems to sum up the way I feel, and the way I have always felt. I'm very grateful that Eric has put this feeling into a song to express the way he feels. Because God knows that I have felt this way a long time and did not know how to express it. There are many more feelings and emotions that can erupt just as if they were just like a volcano. And maybe this is a good start for me to look at more of my feelings and emotions to try to bring them out and work through them. Rock and roll was the foundation for a very long time until it gave way to electronic music. We certainly cannot expect Classic Country to last forever as we know it. You are watching the transition and i see it as a means to keep country alive. There are not enough young artists that are doing it so the industry has to tap into whats left. I am 55 yrs old and i kind of like these new Country artists.
Rich Masi Rich, I see what you mean completely. Being 55, you've seen music progress. I'm 24, and when I hear good music to my taste, I call it as such. But my beef with country is the lack of gate keepers for a lack of a better phrase to say yes this is country or no it isn't. There's nothing wrong with blending genres to create something unique with style or phrasing or instrumentation. Country and rock always went together since rock was an offshoot of country. Pop and country always were intertwined, you can't separate them really. Here's the point we're I call bullshit on country music "evolving", where is the cutoff. You can't just be a pop artist and one day just go country. Alan Jackson talked about that in the 90s with "Gone country". And to use him again with George Straight, they called out Nashville again with "Murder on Music Row" to point out how they have lost what made country music what it should be. They tried to get Taylor Swift to walk the pop/country line and she stood up to the record label when she wanted to make pop music. Nashville's problem is that they are addicted to pop trends a year late. Someone talking about going to the club in designer jeans and a $600 haircut (which Eric Church almost could've been, I believe his ex-fiancé' father was a banker or some type of big wig) doesn't know the struggles of the rural life that is the heart and soul of country. When someone asks me why I rarely listen to the radio, that's my answer. Country has lost its touch with rural reality. Does country need to move forward and evolve? Yes it does. Is it doing itself any favors now? Nope. Florida Georgia Line is something people will go "Who?" 10 years from now. They are like the country version of Nickelback. When was the last time you heard anything from them? Today's country artists wouldn't make it in pop, and will be forgotten with time. Their isn't a Hank, Waylon, Willie, Johnny, and so on that will last a lifetime on the radio.
ih1206 you are right...i have listened to everything from rock to Disco to punk to Country...i love music. I do not like the hip hop stuff much because it is so violent and sends a bad message. I do respect their rights to sing but i do not respect the encouragement of violence. Music is a gift. Thank you for the response
My junior year of highschool. Fit me to a T. My history teacher then, God bless him forever, turned me to this song. He wasn't making fun of me, it's because this song was ME. He believed I could do it, inspired me to keep fighting for this. And this is my life's purpose. I'm on probably the 2nd verse of this song. Making my way to making a career for myself behind the kit. I am your real life Mr. Misunderstood.
Part of me still can’t believe we consider Eric Church country. He’s in an area all his own with his music.

Just listening to Eric on repeat as per usual. What masterpieces this man paints with his lyrics! If there can be a blockbuster rock opera about a ‘deaf dumb and blind kid’ playing pinball, then Eric already has a body of work to prove himself more than worthy. Of course I’d rather see him live but just sayin’. Just listened to Knives of New Orleans and Mistress Named Music... again and then rolled right into Break It Kind of Guy. All I can say just like anytime I play him is ... DAMN! And as we all know that only scratches the surface. This man is a musical genius.
