    Just for everybody out there and angle grinder and a wire wheel works much better! I did my 36 in in 20 min!

      Haha! We get that - we are actually further from the pool than it looks - we tested to see if anything got close, and it wasn’t at all near. We were good!!🤣🤣

    Love the info vids you guy put out. I'm old school, 73 my lovely wife bought me a Blackstone 36 for my birthday last month to go with my smoker and grill. I have since built a patio kitchen to use them in. I love that griddle. This vid takes me back to my first cooking on a griddle. I was 17 [60s] and got hired as a cook at a local A&W. This was a great vid of hard-core cleaning. I wanted to mention, what I learned way back. If you have a rough surface build up, not as extreme as this one. But it happens especially if you get in the habit of cooking in the same area over time. What I used way back, was a hand sized piece of scrap 2x4 with screen wire stappled to 3 sides. Wearing gloves and using hot water with the griddle on at about less than boiling griddle temp. I would scrub the rough area[s] until smooth. Then do a re-season. Watching your vid tripped a memory in case your viewers didn't need a total rehab. Thx again B

    Guys! I can’t thank you enough! Went out to cook the family some breakfast this morning and saw what I thought was something that was going to be out but the street for trash day. Until I saw this video! I feel like I have a brand new Blackstone! Needless to say, breakfast was prepared inside but. Is we’re having fajitas for dinner. Life savers!

    wow, I did not realize you could go that extreme, using a sander. I just bought one used and ended up scraping it and doing my own seasoning, but I really like how this came out.

    Wow, I have 2 28” Blackstones and I have never stripped either back down to bare metal . I’ve used the Blackstone cleaning kit but that’s about it. That little cordless drill was no match for the griddle ! Re seasoned it looks as good as new !

      Haha!! The cordless drill had no business showing up to the party!🤣🤣. I really appreciate knowing that if it gets too much rust or build up/flaming, it can get back to square one, like new. Now that we’ve each done this, barring major water incidents, we shouldn’t have to do this to either machine. Take care man!🤙🤙

    I picked up a 36 in Blackstone grill that somesone had sat out as trash! 😵 i brought it home and took the griddle top off the stand and it was sooo rusted! I just began using soft scrub and a wire brush with a scotchbright pad...then I decided to try something DIFFERENT...i used my carbide scraper that you can use to scrape the finish off furniture. It scraped the black layer off so much better. I think i will finish off with a wire wheel..then it will be time to season it. I checked to see if the burners work and they all fire but I'll have to replace the ignitor because its not working even after changing the battery. So after about a day of labor and a less than $20 part, I will have a freaking awesome Blackstone griddle for very little actual money invested!

    That came out Real good! I've seasoned 2 Blackstone griddles so far plus several cast iron pans. I used a similar system on my cast iron pans and they are non-stick!! Thanks for another great video!

      @@Karrott9 great question! So with proper care, they should rust - water on the steel can cause rust, however (very similar to cast iron). This wasn’t so much rusted as it was that it had too much seasoning build up from improper seasoning. We definitely learned from that and wanted to share!

    flaxseed oil was made popular by an article by Sheryl Canter, however since then many people have debunked it and many others have seen chipping of their seasoning. It, like all oils, makes a seasoning but is very fragile. The trend these days in cast ion etc. is grapeseed oil, the very high temp of a blackstone really works well with the high smoke point of grapeseed oil. So if you are looking to experiment and have some fun try the grapeseed oil in the future, i swapped and never looked back, i've done well over 10 cast iron pans and 4 blackstones with grapeseed and they all out perform the flax i used in the past.

      Excellent suggestion! We actually went “back” to flaxseed after using canola oil - here in Central Florida with the high humidity, the other oils pulled up in the moisture. Flaxseed has been outstanding (Brett’s was laid on too thick, leading to the bubbling and flaking). For sure we will use grape seed next time.     Great video GUYs! Going to try Flax Seed for my next seasoning! I recently went from paper towels to the Scott Blue Towels (the garage towels) -- what a difference. I went from using a dozen paper towels to 3 blue towels per cook!

    Great info! Quick story - made dinner on griddle and wife says, “this looks good.” Like Pavlov’s dog I said, “it can look amazing but if it doesn’t taste amazing this was all for naught.” She’s like huh? Haha! Maybe I need a break from griddle videos.

    My 36" BS griddle has some build up but it's not bad. I try to wipe down and use oil sparingly and let it burn off. I know resurfacing is inevitable in the next year. I'll be less hesitant to do it thanks to you great twins and coming from a twin himself. Rock on brothers!

      For sure! In so many groups, it comes across as something that has to be perfect or you are no good - we had a hard time trying to get sound advice because we felt so inadequate.     That griddle looks AWESOME!!! So glad to see you guys including these types of videos. Gotta maintain your equipment if you want it to last!
    Ive got a few tricks to offer from my many years of seasoning cast iron for my Scout troop:
    If you're taking it back to bare to completely re season, heat it before you use the wire wheel. The heat helps the carbon break loose a lot easier. If your spot cleaning rust, heat it up, pour course Kosher salt on the rust spot, cut a potato in half and use the cut on the salt like a sander. The salt and steam from the potato will work the rust loose so you have clean metal. Wipe the pan WITHOUT WATER and start your oiling.
    Also, if you have an offset or upright smoker (Stick burner), you can heat it and the spray it with canola oil to keep the outside waterproof and looking good.

    Hi Waltwins. What you need to do this QUICKER, is a small cheap angle grinder and a couple of
    POLY STRIP DISC WHEELS, which are excellent and really, really fast for doing this sort of work.

      @@waltwins I bought a used electric griddle which is the best I can do for now, and messing about with some of the idea's you are putting out there, but this electric griddle only has one hot spot in the middle, and I like the way you set different temperature levels along your Blackstone for different foods and just keeping stuff warm ETC whilst the rest of the food is cooking.
      Still jealous about the weather over thereby the way. LOL

    I got my 36” Blackstone a little over three years ago, used it nonstop for about a year and a half, and started following you guys within the first week of griddling. Unfortunately, over the last year I haven’t had nearly as much time on the griddle as I would like, and as a result. Half of my griddle top is pretty rusted. This is by far the best resurfacing video I have found. Very informative, as well as satisfying. I shall return to my griddling ways very soon. Thanks, gentlemen.

    Just got my first griddle for free because it was rusty and beat up, 36 inch 4 burner. I had to do this used and ended up using a ceramic paint stripping disk and a drill. Works really well and doesn't remove any of the metal just rust and old seasoning. Only took about a half hour or so. You can pick them up from lowes or home depot, I think it would be perfect for spot reseasoning.

    I got my new 22 today and hit it with flapper pad on angle grinder then 220 grit sandpaper on sander. Then season it. It's smooth as glass now.

      Lol! It gets a bit messy, but we kept it out of the pool! The hope is to not get it to this point again, unless we end up with rust. We have definitely learned a ton with these Blackstone’s! Brett had been adding too much oil for seasoning that eventually bubbled and flaked. Love that it’s easy enough to sand down and start again!! Take care fam!🤙🤙🔥🔥

    You can now take some 800 wet dry sand paper. And sand the final seasoning. Then 0000 steel wool to make the griddle really slick like Teflon.

    Great video! I came to watch you pull the old seasoning off and then noticed the table. I have that exact table on my amazon wish list I want to use along side my 22" blackstone with the stand while camping as a prep table. It looks like it is very sturdy with the amount work you were doing on it. I will be using your link to order in the next few weeks.
    I see you have the hump on your 22" as well as the oil was running off in all 4 directions. My 17" never had any issues but on my 22" it is crazy how much it bulges when it is hot enough to sear steaks. If I can get a replacement top from blackstone I am going to attempt to make a jig where I can use a hydraulic jack to flatten this one and weld on better supports.
    As I saw you replied to in other comments get an angle grinder with a wheel for the next one. I build drum smokers and the liner under the lid and paint have to be removed manually without the use of heat or the lids warp. It is about as tough to remove as anything I have come across....a wire wheel on an angle grinder shouldn't take more than 15 minutes if that on a 22" blackstone cook surface.

    Thanks guys! Great info. Love my Blackstone. Cooking a big breakfast tomorrow morning and TRUSTING you that the starch does not need to be removed from the potatoes for hash browns.     Great video guys. If you don't mind a tip? Wire brush cups would have have made it a breeze for the large area top then smaller for the cracks. Just trying to help cut your labor.
    I have lots of vintage old cast iron and to restore them I use a wire brush cups. A finer brush not the real course one. The course one could damage the top it's that aggressive. I could have used easy-off but I'm more environmental minded.

    Good job!! It's a little more expensive, but I like to use 3 lbs of bacon for my last phase of re-seasoning my 36" griddle. 1 lb of bacon per 12" of griddle from front to back. Have a great rest of the weekend. Oh, one more thing, you failed to mention how many Ibuprofen's and Extra Strength Excedrin's you took afterwards!! lol

I’m okay if it’s the last for a little while...🤣🤣. Love to season a new griddle, but the grinding process is for the birds!     Looks great and love y'alls channel. One bit of advice tho...you might want to invest in a face shield, a breather mask, and a thick leather apron when doing that kind of stuff. Those wire wheels can throw those bristles pretty violently. Safety isn't sexy, but i would rather look like a nerd instead of possibly getting a metal bristle in my cheek or neck.

      Thank you fam! This whole process took about 2 hours. If we had the right tools up front, the grinding would have taken 30-45 minutes, and then reseasoning would be 45 minutes to an hour. This is something that only is done when needed - for most it may be once every couple of years, or if rust builds up over a winter storage. Take care!🤙🤙

    I bought a used Blackstone 36” used for $150. It was a little rough. Previous owner didn’t take care of it. Rust spots and missing season areas. I took an angle grinder and stripped it down mostly based off this video, and reseasoned it 1000x better. Can’t wait to cook on it for the first time! Thanks for the video!

    Seen a few of these griddle full restore videos now. Some from full on rust as if pulled from the ocean. Wire-wheels and sanders seem a common method but has anyone thought of just taking the griddle plate itself and having it bead blasted? Also even if not taking to have blasted, just taking it off to wire-wheel and sander clean so as to keep that grit away from getting into the burners below or just all over the chassis/frame makes more sense to me.

    Our neighbors had a Blackstone 36 out for the trash, so I took it off their hands after seeing this video that you could restore it. I used my angle grinder and a flappy sand disc that got most of the main surface off (not too worried about the sides since food doesn’t touch it but did some light surface removal on them for grease build up), but will be getting a wire wheel to finish up. It had some serious neglect it looked like with some more surface rust on the framing under the griddle top, but I can smooth that over too. I did notice there is a spot min the middle where it looks most of the cooking took place because I’ve gone over it numerous times and still looks pretty dark compared to the rest. Is this normal, or should I keep working to resurface that as well?? It feels pretty smooth to the touch, so I’m not sure. LOVE your guys’ videos, have been binging them for days along with Hussey lol. Keep up the great work, and love the bond you guys share!

    Looked for the link to the 300lbs table, closest I can find is the one that holds 58lbs. Not strong enough with my clumsiness. I've ordered the official table for the 22" that I bought. But these fundamental videos are so helpful! Super awesome, thank you for taking the time!

    Man I love how the griddle gets the color when seasoning. Is it weird that I almost can't wait to do it again? I am really missing my Blackstone!! On the next day it's not rainy and windy, I may try and do a cook inside the garage like Mr. Homeowner did with the pizza burgers. I just don't want grease on my car, nor do I want the lady of the house to become livid. "What do you think you're doing?!!!!!!!!" I get the look. "But the 12 inch cast iron skillet just isn't big enough."
    Griddle on Bros, can't wait for the Thanksgiving cook!

    I literally did this to my 25lb iron skillet that I neglected for over a year that still had fried corn in it. It had been put in the garage with the fried corn and it looked like dirt when I finally got around to cleaning it.

    My 36 is beginning to look like that after almost 2 years. Nothing sticks....but I don’t like the look.. In Chicagoland - the days to griddle are getting less.. Not sure if I want to do it before the end of the season or start of next year. Thanks for the tips..

    Waltwins: I really love and enjoy your grilling tips. I talked to a friend of mine who owns and operates his own restaurant. they never have to do as you just demonstrated. He told me what he himself does and he instructs all new employees on the proper way to clean the griddle! After cooking allow griddle to cool down, use scraper to clean excess food and oil from griddle. wiped clean with a rag. Clean griddle with water and scraper, wipe clean with rag. use another coat of water and this time use a cold griddle brush to little scrub away any excess food, build up of oil, and food, wipe clean with water again and wipe dry with rag. then put a thin coat of oil all over the griddle. I told him what you showed me, He says that way we won't wear out the grill metal with metal brushes and sanders which will remove metal along with all the other garbage. Which makes since, we would make the grill thinner in places and ruin our grill. He says once a week they turn the grill on high and season the griddle after the restaurant closes. You have a fellow happy griller here, I look forward to seeing more of your very delicious recipes!

      Thank you so much for watching and for the feedback. We clean the griddle after each cook so it’s never a mess (we have a video on our process). We actually learned the technique from Todd Toven who pointed out that the wire wheel brush can’t dig into the cold rolled steel (we can’t say the same for other sanders and grinders, and we do not recommend them). The only thing coming up was the previous seasoning layer. It looked like it did when it was new when we were done.😄😄 - the purpose for this “reseasoning” is that Brett had layered his seasoning way too thick, and here in humid florida, it pulled up, bubbled up and chipped off. Thank you for the suggestion and I know you mean well, I would just hope it wasn’t misunderstood that we have a really messy griddle from lack of care!😄😄.       I think there is probably a difference between an indoor griddle and an outdoor griddle though. An outdoor griddle is more exposed to water than an indoor griddle and therefore needs more extensive and different care.

    Burlap bags is best than any kind of towel. Final clean with paper towel to get the bunny tails of before final oil coating

    After cooking during the cleaning process. You scrap your food off and clear the surface. Then add more oil. Do you need to let that burn off (like the process of seasoning) before you close up shop so to speak?

    I bought my Blackstone from a liquidation place, and it had been used once without seasoning it. I seasoned it a year ago.
    And I still see the Spots where they had previously cooked. Is there anything I can do to just fix those 2 spots?

    Is caring for a steel surface different than cast iron? I haven't ever had to do this to my cast iron pans and they are shiny and clean after years of use. I just make sure to clean and gently season with crisco after each use.

    probably might not want to use wire wheel right next to the pool as the wires fly quite ways when they fly off. wire in a bare foot would not feel too good.

    Trust Blackstone...I reached out to them when my 28's top warped when putting colder, not cold food on it, and they said oh well you used too cold of food. Has nobody put cold and/or frozen food on their griddle before????? All I wanted was a replacement top, we love our Blackstone, but that is a sour note.

      Thank you so much for watching. This is actually a common issue, not sir with Blackstone, but with the cold rolled steel - it can react to the frozen (even cold) foods on the heated griddle top. My understanding is that the steel will re-settle. Sorry you had that happen! Did it re-seethe?

    Surprised you did that next to the beautiful pool. That’s one of jobs you want to do in the neighbor’s driveway.

      🤣🤣🤣. That is the BEST! Yes, we are careful for sure - the pool is a bit further away than it looks - but next time, we’ll use the neighbor’s driveway because it’s just better!🤣🤣🤙🤙

    Take that griddle top and put it in a garbage bag and about 2 gallons of vinegar. Wait a day or two and it will come out amazing. No need to scrub.

    At McD's during the last century, we had a gel like liquid we would put on the grill and it would basically clean it. We would wash it off then put oil on it. If it was really bad we would use sanding screens. Not sure if they still make something like that cleaner. It was a lot easier than what you guys are doing. It was an 6ft grill.

      Thank you so much for watching! We did some research about what would work. Because the oil over time changes the chemical balance of the steel and becomes part of it, the cleaning chemicals won’t work. The stainless steel indoor industrial griddles are a bit different , in that the cold rolled steel binds to the oils for seasoning g (not for flavor/seasoning - just for surface creating). That would be amazing if they did have something g like that! There are for sure other techniques that works as well, but we have found this to be really successful too. Take care Mark!🤙🤙
