I spent about 3 hours trying to clean a griddle cooktop and just barely scratched the surface. I got to thinking and grabbed my paint stripper wire brush and attached it to my cordless drill. WOW! I wish I had thought of that 3 hours earlier! Then I came across this channel and was happy to see I wasn't the only one with that idea. I'm definitely headed to Lowe's to get one of those wheels for my angle grinder!
Yes, the wheel grinder is much faster and less work. The wire wheel does work just slow for this type of job. Good Luck!
I have a love hate relationship with my Blackstone. Hard to use frequently enough to avoid rust, but breakfast, stir fry, and Oklahoma onion burgers are such a pleasing experience.
I understand it natazer.
Cannot agree more!
Thank you for the video! My neighbor put a Blackstone griddle exactly like that one on the corner for trash pickup. He only had it for a year but never covered it or took care of it.
He told me that it was junk. I did exactly what you did and was cooking on it that night.
Awesome story!
You can cover it and take care of it and clean it and season it after every use but they still rust like mad due the low quality steel. The best thing to do it take them to the scrap metal place and get some cash to buy one with a stainless steel cooking surface.
What did I do without this for so long?2 pieces of French Toast at a time ?20 minutes for 10 pancakes ?NO MOREthis griddle is awesomeTook some time to season before first use ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHM5jmQoi4dbb0hoWSBs9hPhSwXUbGVG_ did brunch and hibachi dinner on Mother’s Day and it worked like a charmSturdy, well built and heats up quick. burners2-4 were a little stubborn but then lit up.Great addition to my patio.Bought the cover and it’s great, also bought the accessories kit - scraper is good but the spatulas are flimsy to be honest that’s my only negative.
👍
Awesome Papa ! Papa does it again. I have a barrel off set smoker. It needs some work, and now I know what I’m going to do, thanks once again. Tony
Awesome! Thanks Tony!
This is right up my alley Papa T!! I've been (re)searching how to clean my flat top the best way. I don't have tons of rust, just a bunch of grease and I can't always get it all off! Grrrr. Anyway, great vid! Thanks
Nothing wrong with hitting the spots you need and put some Crisco on it and heat it up to burn it in!
Yeah yeah!! This is exactly what my chef said, to use my fry oil to clean it. All the vids i have watched use degreaser. :-/ which just kills the season. Thanks again Papa T :) xoxo
Sometimes you can use a little soap and water on some tuff spots, but immediately was it with water and heat it up to burn off the water and dry the pores out. Then add some oil to the surface and heat up.
Well done Papa Texas. Thank you for sharing your experiences
👍
Good tip on what tools to use for the griddle to remove the rust!
👍
Did this to my camp chef 600! Better than new👍 didn’t like the coating on it and this fixed that. Used a dewlt 60 grit xp sanding disk on my grinder , took about 25 min. Washed It down and then seasoned it. Peanut oil Browns about 500f degrees and starts to season. Takes about 45 min. Thanks for the video .
👍
That’s what I use with my right angle grinder. I buy those at harbor freight and use my coupons to get them cheaper. They do wear out fast but are way more efficient for cleaning rusty metal. Thanks for sharing with us. BigW:-)
They worked great!
Well I hope to never see the day my griddle gets like that, but if it does, I will know how to fix it. Nice job Papa Texas!
Thanks Kirby!
Exactly what I was looking for, thank you for the great video!
👍
I just did this to my Blackstone. I used an 80 grit polishing wheel. It seasoned better and it’s more smooth than it was when new. Mine wasn’t rusty though. It was just built up with seasoning that was cracking and peeling off. The angle grinder and polish wheel is the way.
Dang it! I was eating dinner and missed it live. You did a great job Papa
Thanks justen!
Great job in bringing that grill back from the brink !
Glad it came back to life!
Great job done Mr. Papa! Yeah I would say you wore that wheel slam out!
Hi CB, I was impressed with how easy the wheel knocked that rust off. The griddle is looking good again!
This is actually better than a sander. Thanks for the lesson!
👍
Hope to see you there!
PAPA Texas I will be there
should be fun .ill be there two
Mine has been out in the weather for three years since I bought it. Have the blackstone model from Lowes and it hasn't rusted at all. When I bought it I lathered it in oil and ran that thing for an hour or so then cooked some fatty breakfast on it. Seasons it well and have only used water and clean rag to steam clean it.

Great job on the clean up!
Thank you Brandon
Been looking for a quick easy way to get the rust off of mine thanks for that video.
👍
Nice work PAPA!! PAPA TEXAS!!!
Thanks Aaron, Aaron Nelson!
The tutorial is very useful...thank you my brother🙏🙏
Awesome!
Omg papa I missed it good to see you happy yeahhhhh
Yeahhh! Wow! Thanks Lorrie
Thanks,PAPA!!
This was great info 👍🏽. Thanks!!
Thanks PR!
Good advice Papa Texas! We do a lot of BBQing here in Australia! 🇦🇺♥️
My buddy from Texas is in Australia for 3 months, his channel is Dirty Deez!
@@PAPATexas I'll have to check out his channel! 🇦🇺♥️
You're removing metal and making it thinner.. No need just get some evapo-rust coat it all place some towels over the griddle top, leave it on for a few hours to overnight preferably where it's Sunny and hot.. you can re wet it with water to reactivate. Then just spray with water again to finish. And the rust comes right off.. lots easier and you won't weaken the might
👍
Great idea, looked it up to see if it’s safe on the grill and it is
Good job, Papa!
👍
Great video brother I will try this. I just subbed
Awesome!
Can't wait to see you cook on that now.
Hopefully soon Dan!
Got it looking good!!
It got seasoned real good. Ready to do a real cook on it!
I know how much work that is. Good job.
A lot of work but it had to be done! Thanks Wayn
Looks great! I'm interested to see the seasoning part! Does that stop it rusting up again?
Yes it will. It actual looks like a better topping than when I bought it. All my cookers stay outside and this happens once in awhile, I get careless some times.
This worked great thanks for the video. I thought mine was done for.
Glad it helped!
We got a black stone that has minor rust in a couple spots, may sand it down, Most of it on the back. Will give this a go.
Easy to do, all my cookers stay outside and things happen. It was time to attack them so I can cook on them again!
This dude is so cool and down to earth
It's PAPA, PAPA Texas!
@@PAPATexas yessir!! Great tutorial, saved my love for cooking!
Papa you are amazing lol
That's what my Momma says!
my granny used good ole brillo pad for hours
I answered your comment. I sent you a email. I didn’t see the comment because it went to spam.
Good job knocking off the rust. Wow!!! Lol
We connected now! Yeah!
I use a scotchbrite on my air grinder for rust on anything steel or cast iron. Doesn’t remove any metal or only minimal metal.
Just like brand spanking new!
👍👍🔥🍻
👍
Nice job!
Thank you Michelle!
Wow looks brand new
👍
How cool is that! Slap about 5 pounds of bacon on that bad boy now PAPA!
I slapped 2 pounds on it that same day, lol
Did you say "ash rub" brush? Anyway nice cleaning with two of em! 👍🏼's up PAPA ☺
lol
Papa one question. You did the dutch oven before this video and it looks great! However, you tried two different items on the griddle top. Obviously the large grinder couldn't fit and is not flexible enough for the pot. So what/how did you do that?
I used the wire wheel on the dutch oven. Was easy to do.
that worked great
👍
The cut @2:14 made me laugh. Leaves grinder turned on, goes to plug it in without turning it off. After cut: some wild grinding marks on the table. Oops 🤪 Keep it safe 😎
👍
Hello sir, great job there! I have a large "disk"(fire pit) for outdoors grilling and it is rusty, i will follow your method in cleaning it. My question is, how do i prevent rust from coming back on the cleaned surface?
All my cookers stay outside. They rust up from time to time. I guess the best thing to do is to store it indoors.
Subscribed Papa 👍
Awesome Cesar 👍
Thanks for this video
👍
Thanks pops 🔥
👍
Perfect timing PAPA, my griddle is in need of a once over and your video is sure going to help.
Get that griddle going Joe!
Good idea...should have seen me cleaning bbq grills yeaterday.
Awesome!
Wire wheels work great also.
I tried the wire wheel, didn't work as fast.
Dang it (you got a new sub!) I like you you have lotz of Character on screen!! I need that so I'm gonna watch you and Steal Aaaa I mean mimic your enthusiasm!! Yep I found out the hard way that the Cover that you can get for the Blackstone is not Water proof its merely water resistant. Meaning it rusted from all the rain and snow we had the last 6 months!!! Great wasted cover gotta get the solid cover and then put the fabric cover over that (its all a money grab!!) ok thanks for the inspiration!!
Thank you. I have about 15 cookers and they all stay outside. Most don't have covers. But this is the first time this has happened. They normally sit under the porch awning.
JA JA WITH OUT ELECTICITY DON'T WORK. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. THANK
Thi's is amazinge.
Thanks bv
I have a PC RO buffer/sander, variable speed. Wouldn't the correct grit sandpaper do just as well if not better?
I would try it on a spot to see
thanks for sharing
I use molassses and water
Interesting
Omg I love this tips and tricks video awesome bout to make tx style 🥩
👍
That looks great. How did you do the back corners?
It has been awhile, I think I used sandpaper or a wire square brush.
No diggity no doubt that's a cool trick Papa Texas
👍
Works much better when the grinder is plugged in! LOL. 👍
lol, for sure!
I didn't find the site to find the disk you used..had tp pause before I could understand the disk name and size..can these be found at Harbor Freight also? Or Home Depot??
The discos a plow disc. You can find them at a farm store. I welded the handles on, grinding the pits out and seasoned it for around $40.00 I should be making a video this summer on how to make one.
Nice video
Thanks Kyle
WE HAVE WIFI>>>>>> for a few days LOL stopping by for a watch a comment and to leave you a thumbs up......nice to actually see the video verse skip skip chop chop sputter sputter....HAVE A GREAT DAY TODAY !!!
Got to like having wifi sometimes, and sometimes not!
One channel. The guy spayed high heat paint, that you paint the out side of grills with on the underside of his griddle. Contacted him. He said the paint is holding up. That was 5 years ago. I wonder if you sprayed it on the edge of the inside of the griddle If that would Make just the cooking area. The only place that would need cleaning
I did not use paint
Papa-Texas you saved me some money. Wife told me to buy a new one. I got that rust off, looking new. I'm just wondering how many times to season/cure the grill now? I'm cheap. I bought some lard and gonna season it 3 times and see how it comes out?
Awesome! I use bacon bits and pieces because it is cheap. To test if it is seasoned, cook something on it and taste it before you do a big family meal. If you taste a metal taste, it isn't ready yet.
Sorry I missed it live
All goo Mel Mel
I got 4 Dutch ovens i need to reseason, time for me to get busy LOL
That wire wheel is what I used on my, did great. Got to love dutch oven cooking!
Nice. Try a palm sander with some 80 grit then 120 to finish er up.
I did! But I don't remember if it is in the video or not, lol
Just picked up a perfectly functioning Blackstone griddle at the dump. I'm assuming they dumped it because it had a little rust.
That is Awesome!
Big Dubya? As in our beloved Dubya? He signed my citizenship papers back in 2003!
Awesome!
I wish I would’ve found your video before my husband threw away both of my Dutch ovens. I would’ve sent them to you. 😭
Oh man, that breaks my heart to hear!
I was just given a brand new but poorly taken care of Blackstone by a friend. Angle grinder works great but I've got some serious pitting on about a third of the cooking surface. Thinking this won't be much of an issue once it's seasoned and cleaned over time. Thoughts?Advice?Anyone?
You should still be okay and cook as normal.
How's she goin'? Cleaning those grills is a 'grind' buddy but you did a nice job!!!
Thanks Grampie
Like your style bro yeeeaah
Thank you Rory
PAPA TEXAS! Can I make griddle out of any plate steel? Is mild steel from my local metal supplier safe for food? Not sure what they coat that stuff in to keep it from rusting and I have no idea if I can get it off.
I'm not sure, maybe they know the answer at that store. Good luck Michael
If you're talking about that black coating on the steel, it's mill scale. Its not an additive. It forms naturally during the process of pressing it out. There is no "food grade" steel. Stainless is popular because its more resistant to rust, but seasoning the steel negates that anyway. You ever seen a disco a.k.a. cowboy wok? Thats literally just a plow disc. Nothing special other than it has a higher carbon content than mild steel.
Wow, I mean yeah! wow yeah!
Yeah, wow! lol booger! yea!
What was the first tool you used, and where can that be purchased?
It is a wire wheel, I got this one at Home Depot
Used the disk on my griddle and it came out great now I have to season it thx
👍
Yeah!
Wow!
That’s it I’m grabbing the sand blaster
👍
I've been using an orbital sander which works phenomenal, but I still have the swirl marks from the rust stains. When I season the griddle, the middle is not taking any seasoning. Is stays dryish
Hi gloria, is there a heat element under that part? And what are you using to season with?
@@PAPATexas Hi there, yes there are 4 Heating elements, and I'm using vegetable oil too season it
Cool beans.
Awesome!
Looking good PT! It's going to be like new.
Yes it is, we have been cooking on it and love it! Thanks Justin
Is it now wavy top grill? Not flattop?
lol, it still works great!
Yeeeeeaaaa👍!!!!!
WooooWWWW!
If the bottom is also rusted, should I grind it aswell or it isn't necessary ?
You can, but I would really only worry about the part the food touches.
If you do the bottom, spray a high heat black paint on it
After resurfacing my blackstone 36 inch my seasoning keeps flaking and peeling.. what’s wrong?? Maybe I didn’t grind the top Smooth enough? Or what could my issue be??
It might be the way you are seasoning it.
@@PAPATexas I always did used 2 to 3 tablespoons of avacado oil several times
I am removing my seasoning again and I notice I left grinder marks on the top … do you think that is effecting it???
What is the name brand of the disc for the grinder?
I don't know off hand, but I think the link to is in the description box.
Thank you for sharing But you forgot to share the link of what Power tool you are using 😀
Black and Decker grinder: amzn.to/2NX68b0
My BIL just gave me a rusty Blackstone, need this gadget ASAP
Awesome!
Where can I find the info on the disks you use?
There is a link to it in my description box below video. I don't have the link on me.
I've sanded and seasoned a crap tone of pans and I can say with some knowledge.. probably more than the average joe that sanding the 'pits' out completely is a bad idea. The seasoning needs something to stick to even if it's a very very small amount. I have cast iron pans that I cannot season no matter how hard I try but if I do the same appearance of sanding but leave some minor texture the seasoning is 100x easier and quicker to stick and stay on after cooks.
👍
Once upon a time, cast iron was ground to a mirror finish before seasoning. The only reason for not griding out the pits from the sand casting was to save money.
That was terrible. Great job!
Crap. Missed it. Good info, though!
👍
