    This is definitely my favourite video yet, this and Kyle's greenhouse, it's awesome that it's an ecosystem. And the spotted turtle is just awesome. And the minnow and the tadpoles feeding the turtles, that's just awesome, a video of him putting the minnows in there and the turtles hunting would be awesome.

    I grew up in NJ, we would find box turtles (especially right after thundershowers) and keep them in a big backyard enclosure and let them go as soon as school started up again. I must have had 200 box turtles over the years, but only found 1 wood and 1 spotted the whole time, This is a great environment for the species you have, all which are getting close to extinction.

    Is it better for conservational purposes to let the eggs develop where they are instead of taking them in and putting them in an incubator? I mean, if they develop outside where the mother lay them, then only the strongest ones will survive and only those with mothers who have the right behaviour and can find where to lay the eggs will survive.
    I mean, is keeping them in incubators harming the species evolutionarily and making them more dependant on perfect conditions to be able to develop?

    • @AJKAquaria
      @AJKAquaria 7 років тому +1

      Keep in mind that a NA wood turtle's sex is not determined by temperature, but the chromosomes of each individual embryo.

    • @franklinmichael671
      @franklinmichael671 7 років тому +3

      Nathan M What I'm saying isn't that the incubation will make the turtles les fit for survival in the wild, but incubating them means that many eggs which wouldn't have made it because they are more picky about having constant temperature and humidity will still make it, allowing turtles that would have died in nature to survive and reproduce, making the species less fit for survival in the wild because the eggs would be more dependant on more stable temps and humidities.
      I'm not saying it's a problem Im just asking Kenan if it's a real issue. I guess he knows since he is a member of the turtle conservancy group.

    • @heatherwise3546
      @heatherwise3546 7 років тому +2

      Turtles are not maternal and will eat their young or others in the habitat might. And finding baby turtles hatched outdoors is hard and you never know the exact day they will hatch. I incubate my turtles outdoors so i know this to be true. More eggs hatch outdoors than in incubators so the strongest surviving outdoors would not be true i agree. Im sure this guy incubates indoors but finding all the eggs is unlikely and you end up finding babies outside.

    • @franklinmichael671
      @franklinmichael671 7 років тому +2

      heather wise What do you mean you incubate outdoors? You leave them where the mother lay them? What I would want to preserve is the genetics of the mothers that know the right spots to lay their eggs. I say this because for example with leopard geckos you get mothers that dig in the right spots and females that lay eggs on top of rocks or in their water bowl.

    love this video! Very educational and love the habitat for the turtles. I'm from Colorado and I just had two three toed box turtles hatch at the end of October I incubated them at 85% humidity and 93 temperature. If I'm not wrong they are females. Now she has gone underground and has eaten only once. Is that normal should she be hibernating. What advice would you give me?

    Kenan, I've been binge watching your videos for 4 straight hours today to learn about tortoises (mainly Sulcata and Cherryheads). I intend on moving to the Orlando area in 5 years and I want to own 2-3 tortoises. You know what would be a great idea for a video? You should produce a video on which plants that you can plant for your animals. Especially for certain regions of the U.S. I want to make a great enclosure or at least get some cool ideas before i move on down from NJ. Thanks and keep yo the great informative videos. I will donate to Patreon i'n the near future. And should i ever hit the big lottery, you'd be the first i donate to. Also, do you have a website that i can purchase tortoises from?

    I'm from Pennsylvania, tri state area. and eastern box turtles have become so rare by me because every where I would find them as a kid is being taken over by man. My dad built a naturalistic enclosure in the our back yard and they bread in it back in the day. then i released them in the woods directly behind my house where i found them. its so good to see eastern box turtles, probably my favorite. I just released an adult male i found in the street after having it for 2 years... i had too. and yes i'm the dude you see walking across the highways to help the easterns cross lol.
