I have a huge amount of appreciation for people who give their pets large and nice enclosures and that might be the sweetest I’ve ever seen. Those turtles are getting what they deserve for sure! Great job

I wish all pet owners would show this much respect. Rabbits should never be living in those small cages. Dogs should never live outside on the end of a chain.😩🙏

@@tinawindham6958I used to work in a pet store and grooming shop in a very affluent area on Long Island and I'll give you the opposite extreme. Many of my customers kept their dogs in crates nearly 24/7 and only let them out to go to the bathroom outside a couple times a day. You could really tell a dog lived in a cage when you saw their feet and the way they splayed or their posture from being cooped up in a tiny cage they could barely stand up in.

I live in central Russia. In Moscow, turtles, unfortunately, are not found, but in other regions there are different types of aquatic turtles. In the near Kazakhstan land tortoises walk in crowds. In Russia, these reptiles cost very little.

Extremely pampered tortoises, which is great, but they are hardy creatures. I had a Texas gopher tortoise captured from a desert road in Nevada as an adult, and transported to Montana. We just let it roam freely around the house, and it would sleep near the heat vents. Fed it veggies and fruits and let it decide what it wanted to eat. It liked red licorice and tinsel off of the Xmas tree. We let it live in the garden in the summer. It would escape regularly and wander all over the neighborhood. It was amazing that we were able to recover it each time. I took it with me to Los Angeles, CA. and Phoenix AZ, so it tolerated any climate.
I'm not saying that is the way to keep a tortoise, but I was young and ignorant, yet it thrived no matter what conditions it faced. I kept it for 20 years and eventually gave it to a knowledgable custodian.

I’ve have two horsfield torts for few years now and they are very easy care and they are sweethearts one male one female, they love attention when they hear me at any given time and they come to me not just to feed. They are in a 6’x4’x4’ inclosure. Why not mention them in the best of torts to keep as a pet? I wouldn’t trade my two little darlings for any other species. They are sweethearts non aggressive and a joy to watch and to love.

Not an expert by any means, I and I no longer live in that region, but the Angulates it is true summer is unbearably hot and winter is miserably drizzly and cool, I am not sure how relevant this is but we had a couple who lived in the rock garden in our garden and I did notice they never eat anything but fynbos( extremly woody herb based plants) could this be the reason for the reproductive challenges? Fynbos is famous for being very alkeline and (although contradictory) very tannin rich, could general body Ph be affecting egg development? The most famous examples of Fynbos are Rooibos and Buchu (both are made into tea's for human consumption) but benefits touted for both of them is extreme amounts of anti oxidants and changes to blood Ph, another thing to concider is the fibre content which is also way more extreme than general grasses and shrubs.....Again not an expert, and never actually kept the species but these are thoughts I have based on what the diets I saw them eat are.

My angulate tortoise starting running to me and following me only after a few years since I got her. I do live in South Africa, Cape Town. I've had another one many years before that gave me many offspring, but has to give that one to a new owner due to my dog I had at that time who would turn the tortoise over. The tortoises are all outdoor.
All the eggs that I have had that hatched were all outside where they were laid in the sand. Maybe you should they will do better if you keep them in sand and try and emulate the weather in specifically Cape Town. Yes it get very hot here but also very cold and it can and does rain lots at times. It's because it's south Africa and not Africa haha.
A guy who lives next to my cousin has a few of these tortoises as well and they keep on giving him more ones, also all are outside and the eggs hatch outside.

    Eternal question:
I have asked it to many people, but I don’t get any straightforward answer. So I
ask Kamp Kenan for an answer. Why tortoises are kept more like mammals than other
reptiles? I mean most tortoises are given a lot of outdoor spaces to roam, they
have open tanks, keeping them indoors is like a last resort method, they eat varied
food, they get exercise etc. Also I think tortoise keepers tend to anthropomorphize
their animals a lot. ON the other hand most lizards and snakes are kept in more
clinical/sterile/controlled conditions, have much less space. And even large diurnal
species in the appropriate climate are rarely housed outside. Tortoises are kept
like cold-blooded livestock and squamates (lizards/snakes) are kept like aliens.
Also the tortoise hobby and the lizard/snake hobby are parallel but different. Different
shows, different publications, etc, and people who keep the one group usually don’t
    keep the other. Why?
