I have a 2002 limited, while I did notice a couple of small differences, nothing that will change the process, just like a hose bracket in a different spot, so pay attention if you're looking for points of reference. I have a few changes I would add for speediness, while at the expense of knuckle skin. Make sure you own a palm ratchet. The full handle ratchet is just for breaking loose and tightening. Driver side of motor: only top 2 bolts on the large black bracket, then disconnect wiring plug in the middle. All of the other wiring plugs and whatnot can be left alone. Throttle body pulls out far enough to get the 2 rear plugs out. One vacuum line on front drivers side from valve cover to intake manifold can be pulled and rotated up. Besides that, all the other bonus stuff can stay. I recommend having multiple 3" 3/8 extensions, use one on the spark plug socket and drop it in, then add the second extension, then same in reverse for removal.
I can't believe all the stuff that has to come off to do a simple maintenance project. Was fairly easy. I got all the bolts mixed up sadly so tomorrow I get to try to figure out what bolts go where. That's gonna be the tricky part.
Lol... great job for getting it done. I normally put back the bolts in their place so I don’t lose or mix them. Do your oil change next: ua-cam.com/video/1uIhwnQ7fBc/v-deo.html

Hey thanks for the video bro, it's really hard to find these kind of videos for monteros, and I have to do that soon, but quick question, I have a small leak of oil on the passenger side of the car, looking from the floor the highest point where I can see oil coming from its near the header gasket, so I was thinking maybe it's dripping from the valve cover gasket, but it's not that covered in oil, so I'm not sure if I shouldn change it while I'm doing the sparks and wires, what do you think?
Thank you for your comment and for your support... Someone had a similar question: You might have a leak from your Camshaft Seal Rear o-ring (passenger side- next to the valve cover gasket). It wouldn’t be a bad idea to replace valve cover gasket at this point and spark plugs seals. This video shows how to do it- I did this some time ago but didn’t record it- so I started making videos to help others-so I hope this video helps you: ua-cam.com/video/PVigjtYRqls/v-deo.html Cheers and good luck.
@@RookieRepairs Thank you man, I was actually checking the comments and that makes a lot of sense, btw you should do a video on how to do that too, that way I may be able to do it myself haha
I would definitely recommend to replace your valve cover gasket and spark plugs seals (these parts come together). The part is about $49.99 at Autozone Fel-Pro Valve Cover Gasket I don’t unfortunately - but you are almost there... it’s only 6 bolts holding the Valve Cover (each side) and once you removed the Valve Cover you’ll be able to see the seals for the sparks plugs. Passenger side have an Extra bolt to remove the Valve Cover - 10mm or 12mm socket
You might’ve already got it done but here is the video for Valve Cover Gasket Replacement and other parts. I hope you find this one helpful. ua-cam.com/video/MVau8T6jwjk/v-deo.html
Very good video. Thanks. I managed to get my 2001 Montero Sport 3.0 v6 taken apart and there was quite a bit of oil in the spark plug wells and most of it went down in the holes when I took the plugs out.. ugh.. anyway, I replaced the plugs, plug wires and put it all back together, but when I re-started the motor there was burning smells and smoke, then the idle went up way fast, I had to shut it down.. not sure how to proceed any advice??
Gary Berling Great to hear that you were able to get it done. First: check all connections (electrical, hoses) and make sure all spark wires are connected to the right place. I’m sure the smoke came out on the top engine? I would say it was the oil or coolant that leak to the exhaust pipeline. As for the idle, make sure your throttle body wire is not to tight that would cause for your idle to go high-adjust it by loosen a nut a bit and tighten the other side nut (located next to the intake manifold). I would let the car run a bit and let the oil that spilled dry out (1-2 minutes) and then do these steps.
If there is oil in the sparkplugs holes the valve cover gasket needs to be replaced along with the grommets that seal the sparkplugs holes. They all get brittled and hard over time that's why the spark plugs had oil. When you took them out, the oil went into the combustión chamber and off course got burned and the ECM might have adjusted timing accelerating the engine to adjust the mixture... When oil gets to the spark plugs this grommets and valve cover gasket MUST be changed or else, the will get wet again with oil and again cause misfires....
You are absolutely right... when these gaskets and grommets have never been replaced before it’s better to replace them now. If not oil will get in the spark plugs again
When I did this the autoparts did not have the valve cover gaskets and spark plugs seals (my spark plugs had oil inside them) so I did not replace them- so I made a new video where I replace these parts. Here is a link: ua-cam.com/video/MVau8T6jwjk/v-deo.html Best of Luck!
@@RookieRepairs DONE! This was expected to be hard work, but there were times when I almost gave up. Fitting the gasket on 28:37 took me quite a lot. My monty has the same engine but a little different. No cruise control but has different hoses that made it quite a feat. Thanks for the guide. I rekon it may be the last time I do this work. The truck had a misfire at times and sometimes rough idle. The culprit I believe was one of the cables that had swollend and was not seated all the way. Thankfully I had the old cables that were working fine but had them changed when the valve covers and valve seals were done 100k Km back. At the end the job was successful and its runnign great! Thanks again for the guide. Keep the good work hermano! vamos!

@Rookierepairs i been having a slight oil leak not from under the montero only thing i was told was my fromt right cat converter is going bad awhile back and i do all my own work would it be safe to say its due to old spark plug seals allowing oil seapage thats the one thing i have not done yet.
Mason Ramos Have you replaced your valve cover gaskets? Also if you did replaced valve cover gasket did you seat them properly because sometimes they slip off... Oil in your Spark plug is due to the spark plug seals. I would wash/ clean your engine and then see where the oil is coming from

No you are probably spot on i replaced plugs and spark plugs still have a slight oil leak i notice valve cover has build up around the valve cover seal and where the oil stains the floor is in the area where the rear cam shaft o ring for the oil is.

Hey bro my 2002 montero sport is consuming a lot of oil and I have a P0300 code. A mechanic said the oil is burnt in the cylinders and causing the spark plugs to misfire. He said I need to rebuild the engine. I see smoke coming out and no oil under the car when parked. What do you recommend?
There are many possible causes of a P0300 trouble code: -Vacuum leaks (e.g. a damaged vacuum hose or a leaking intake manifold gasket) -Ignition system problems (e.g. a bad distributor or worn spark plugs) -Fuel delivery issues (e.g. a weak fuel pump or clogged fuel injectors) -Engine mechanical problems (e.g. a failed head gasket or loose timing chain) Sensor issues (e.g. a bad mass airflow sensor or crankshaft sensor) Wiring problems (e.g. a broken wire or lose connector) -Emissions equipment issues (e.g. a bad exhaust gas recirculation valve or secondary air injection system failure) Always get 2-3 diagnostic check or the mechanic you trust. I would first reset / erase the code and see if it gives you more codes after. Check out your intake hoses and air box hoses. Next you might want to check your spark plugs. As you could see in my car it had oil in the spark plugs- I didn’t replaced my spark plugs gaskets/ seals and valve gaskets because auto parts didn’t have the parts but had to put it back ( I will be doing this video soon). Also oil might be going into your spark plugs and into your cylinder head and causing it to burnt out (oil inside the spark plugs). I did replace the intake manifold gasket.
@@RookieRepairs thanks bro I already took the car to three mechanics and they charged me money for work that didn’t help haha I reset the codes and after driving the car on a long trip from sf to la the car got to a point where the acceleration is trash and i have to push the gas pedal all the way when going uphill. I noticed that the engine light went off whenever the oil was completely gone and the measuring stick was dry then it went back on after i filled it with oil
So you are most likely losing your oil on valve cover gaskets (passenger and driver), spark plugs seals, also the rear cam o-ring seal: ua-cam.com/video/PVigjtYRqls/v-deo.html There’s a cover under the Montero so it will be difficult to see all the oil leaks Have you change your oil? When they change the oil they might have left the drain plug (bolt) loose or the oil filter. ua-cam.com/video/1uIhwnQ7fBc/v-deo.html
@@RookieRepairs so I checked my spark plugs and found out that the three on the driver side are fully saturated in oil while the three on the passenger side are squeaky clean! A compression test done by a mechanic concluded that the three cylinders on the driver side (the ones with oily spark plugs) have no compression. The car runs and drives with the expected shake and loss of power. Any ideas? Thanks!
BRO !! I need help I followed directions to the T and the intake won’t come out ….. do I give it a little knock to pop it loose ? Nothing is working even went and took some extra bolts out I literally can’t find nun else that follows the intake HELPPPPP please

Very nice video. I wonder when you had the intake manifold off, how to clean the EGR flow passage. Would be helpful to have a video on cleaning EGR passages both intake side and exhaust side. I have a 97 Montero Sport LS 3.0L engine with P0400 code, and when EGR valve is activated at idle with vacuum pump, the RPM doesn't change, so I guess carbon has blocked the passages. Now I have to figure out what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I have the same truck the v6 bi color green and grey 1999 original from japan I am from argentina. just in case don t have more videos of service like this of this truck
Really helpful video with step by step instructions. I am wondering if doing the valve cover gaskets, does the throttle body need to be removed too or can it stay with intake when removing the intake ? If detached from intake, one doesn't need to remove the coolant lines attached to throttle body. One less work to worry about with old hoses.
@@ryano8613 I did the spark plug change last year and throttle body doesn't need to come off. Needed some tricky tools to get the old hoses out and back in again. It worked.
AEM Garden- I’m glad you were able to get it done ✅. Also for the hoses next time just spray some WD40 or CRC Freeze-Off it will loosen it up and it comes off easily.

@@RookieRepairs thanks for responding. Once the engine heats up, it starts dumping all the coolant underneath. Coolant runs down on both sides of the engine block. I've checked hard at the top of the engine and underneath but cant find where its coming from, making me wonder if one of the core plugs has rotted. Friends told me to move the intake manifold and maybe I'll see where the coolant is escaping. Is there a pipe or hose that runs under the manifold?
*4G63* There’s the two small hoses that connects to throttle body... also there’s hoses connections on the back if you follow the small hoses that connects to your throttle body... check all hoses makes sure they are not ripped/cracked. Lastly the hoses should have hose clamp if not it will cause leaks
Hugo Garcia Yes the Montero runs great again... I included this information in the description: the spark plug tube seal is no longer preventing the oil going into the spark plug/plugs. I also included the link if you like to replace these parts. Best of luck!
That means the valve cover gasket and spark plugs grommets are old brittled and not sealing properly allowing oil into the the spark plugs holes. This job to be perfect needs to be done with wires, plugs, gasket and grommets. Otherwise oil will get back into the spark plugs causing misfires and off course even poorer mpg
GeoBleu1990 You are absolutely right... when these gaskets and grommets have never been replaced before it’s better to replace them now. If not oil will get in the spark plugs again.

I recommend having multiple 3" 3/8 extensions, use one on the spark plug socket and drop it in, then add the second extension, then same in reverse for removal.
thanks bro is very useful your video

I would definitely recommend to replace your valve cover gasket and spark plugs seals (these parts come together). The part is about $49.99 at Autozone Fel-Pro Valve Cover Gasket
I don’t unfortunately - but you are almost there... it’s only 6 bolts holding the Valve Cover (each side) and once you removed the Valve Cover you’ll be able to see the seals for the sparks plugs. Passenger side have an Extra bolt to remove the Valve Cover - 10mm or 12mm socket

If not oil will get in the spark plugs again
yes! I aways wanted to do that spark change but had no guide. tnx!
When I did this the autoparts did not have the valve cover gaskets and spark plugs seals (my spark plugs had oil inside them) so I did not replace them- so I made a new video where I replace these parts. Here is a link: ua-cam.com/video/MVau8T6jwjk/v-deo.html

There are many possible causes of a P0300 trouble code:
-Vacuum leaks (e.g. a damaged vacuum hose or a leaking intake manifold gasket)
-Ignition system problems (e.g. a bad distributor or worn spark plugs)
-Fuel delivery issues (e.g. a weak fuel pump or clogged fuel injectors)
-Engine mechanical problems (e.g. a failed head gasket or loose timing chain)
Sensor issues (e.g. a bad mass airflow sensor or crankshaft sensor)
Wiring problems (e.g. a broken wire or lose connector)
-Emissions equipment issues (e.g. a bad exhaust gas recirculation valve or secondary air injection system failure)
Always get 2-3 diagnostic check or the mechanic you trust.
@@RookieRepairs thanks bro
I already took the car to three mechanics and they charged me money for work that didn’t help haha
I reset the codes and after driving the car on a long trip from sf to la the car got to a point where the acceleration is trash and i have to push the gas pedal all the way when going uphill. I noticed that the engine light went off whenever the oil was completely gone and the measuring stick was dry then it went back on after i filled it with oil
So you are most likely losing your oil on valve cover gaskets (passenger and driver), spark plugs seals, also the rear cam o-ring seal:
ua-cam.com/video/PVigjtYRqls/v-deo.html
There’s a cover under the Montero so it will be difficult to see all the oil leaks
Have you change your oil? When they change the oil they might have left the drain plug (bolt) loose or the oil filter.

Do you know where the leak is located? By the intake, radiator, throttle body? Are you having to add coolant to your radiator or reservoir often?
@@RookieRepairs ok thanks brother. Ill try to check all hoses before i do anything major
Great job on that man, you're car is gonna love you for that. What do you think the issue was with oil being inside the spark plug?
Hugo Garcia Yes the Montero runs great again... I included this information in the description: the spark plug tube seal is no longer preventing the oil going into the spark plug/plugs. I also included the link if you like to replace these parts. Best of luck!
That means the valve cover gasket and spark plugs grommets are old brittled and not sealing properly allowing oil into the the spark plugs holes. This job to be perfect needs to be done with wires, plugs, gasket and grommets. Otherwise oil will get back into the spark plugs causing misfires and off course even poorer mpg

I hope you are able to get it done ✅
Bruh, you went in too far to not do valve cover & spark plug gaskets. Decent vid tho.
Lol... I know... I will get to it ASAP... the auto parts didn’t have the gaskets and I didn’t want to leave it out so I had to do it...
does NGK mean No Good Kind?...j/k:)
Hahaha this one is a good one... Thank you for comment. Also if you have oil in your spark plugs you’ll need to replace your spark plugs seals, might as well replace valve cover gaskets, camshaft seals (driver and passenger)- check out my other video ua-cam.com/video/MVau8T6jwjk/v-deo.html
Appreciate the vid, HOWEVER...
you didn't change the bcg's & spark plug tube seals!!!
You're gonna get oil on the new wires and have to do this job all over again ¿¿¿¿
Big Jobs everything should be change
I’m about to do this to my 2001. I hope I don’t fuck something up 😂
Peter C Be gentle with the wires because they will rip off if they haven’t been replaced for some time- if they do rip off use long reach pliers to pull them out. Best of luck to you...
Rookie Repairs thanks brother 👍🏽
If you have any questions feel free to reach out
those spark plugs were coated in oil because the rocker cover gaskets are leaking , those wires will be coated again in oil and leads dont like hot oil , quite sloppy work
ummm i gotta say the plugs you took out arent the same as the ones our saying that our going to put in....the new are thinner and longer...wats the go
Dang my wires aren't numbered
Looks scary 😟
Here’s a more detailed video: ua-cam.com/video/MVau8T6jwjk/v-deo.html
It just looks scary but I’m sure you can do it 😉
