    This level of understanding makes scope work exciting. I built a delta sensor with a 50 mm guitar piezo with a volume knob and sealed it with rtv to capture pressure in a pvc pipe clean out cap and it works awesome the volume knob allow me to make it big or little on the scope screen. It has no unwanted noise in its capture and it looks just like i will be incorporating it into my tool box. Thanks to these videos it makes perfect sense.

    Thank you Brandon, great video! Question for you, if you please. Near the beginning of the video, you talk shortly of being able to do a relative compression test from the dlc connector. I completely understand that, but I thought you said you could do it with a dvom from the dlc connector...or did I misunderstand somewhere,?

    Excellent! I’m a little confused at 3:18 identifying which cylinder is creating suckback. Although #1 is in the middle of its exhaust stroke #3 evo occurs right at the time the suckback occurs. My brain is full now! It has to digest.

      it makes sense only if more vacuum is higher voltage and the actual misfiring cylinder is no. 3, there's somethig wrong here i think.

    I have a question about 2:41:50
    How are you using a -25 H2O tail pipe sensor on the intake? Wouldn't that be measuring inches of hg which is way out of the range of the transducer? And is this a cranking capture or running capture?

    I usually turn cylinders off and on from the scanner if I think there’s a cylinder misfire. Usually the scanner turns the coil off for that cylinder. Interesting way of finding a miss .

      Rarely do I disable fuel as it is not easy to do in most cases. During analysis, the engine is not run for a long period of time so fuel typically is not an issue.

      Frank, you do not need this type of scope. Any scope with capable sample rate and some of the PC-based features that allow for zoom will suffice

    Brandon, i have a few questions
    1. Is there a difference with pressure transducer from ATS to pico ? I own the price difference is huge
    2. Do you also use pressure sensor to check fuel psi ? If so, what brand pressure tool do you use ?

      Yes, The WPS 500 is an excellent transducer capable of measurements of -15 psi, upwards of 500 psi positive. It’s one of the most widely used on the market. It is a single unit comprised of three different settings and three different zoom levels. It’s about $1000 US and you can only sample from one place at a time.
      For the same price, you can sample from three different locations simultaneously, using ATS.
      You can definitely sample fuel pressure with any of these devices. See some of the videos on the training tab at

    At 1:22:10 you say "extra vacuum because some air escapes past the rings". If that was happening, wouldn't it have less vacuum with the leakage through the rings? I understand the higher vacuum during the compression stroke to be due to the movement of the piston continuing down the sealed cylinder and therefore making more room in the cylinder, but still with the same amount of gas that was taken in when the inlet valve was open. Is that correct?

      The leak only occurring under compression but cylinder seals otherwise. This means, during decompression, the cylinder draws into a deeper vacuum

      Alex Messina , you will want a transducer capable of +300psi but must also measure negative-pressure.
      As far as intake/tailpipe/crankcase/rad….a delta sensor will suffice

    I have found some quick first tests with the scope that makes workflow fast. Using an elimination process. Assuming the PC is up and running, I can have a VE waveform in 3 minutes. If you are fairly sure the engine mechanical is OK, this conforms that and I can move directly to PG and controls. Only a hard intermittent will break this rule. Using WPS and Autonerdz probe. I have three guys using these theory’s in the shop right now. All my techs do diag at a high level. I rarely do a cranking relative comp because of this and other procedures.

      VE Testing is highly recommended. In fact, so much so that I stated at the beginning of this seminar that it was only about how to acquire these wave forms.
      Almost all of my data analysis is gathered through the scan tool, especially for drivability fault. I only moved to The lab scope to prove circuit and or component fault.
      As effective as VE testing is, it will not prove cylinder leakage. This is why pressure acquisition and analysis is so handy

    This might be a rookie question but does tailpipe length make a difference for when you would feel the pulse difference?

      the exhaust configuration always plays a role but I find "rpm" has the most effect on the tailpipe waveform and testing should remain under 1500 rpm

    Brandon I’ve taken your in cyl. Waveform analysis class and I just took a Bernie Thompson TST in cylinder class and they were both excellent. I have your handout from the class but I see you put out a text. Would I gain more insight if I purchase the text. You know my background I’m a Diyer and aircraft mechanic and trying to learn all I can. I also am watching your video right now on the hookup and analysis video. I’m sure it’s a great book to have and I like supporting you and your classes and channel. Who would you recconmend I purchase it from so you get some benefit. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.     Hi Brandon, i bought the Escope elite 4. not really happy with it,i can't see 2 or more channels live, they look like super imposed unless i measure & deep record it and many other features..I'm planning to buy the pico scope, my question is can i measure both the intake & exhaust pulsed on two channels using the WPS pressure transducer ? If not what can i use to look both a the same time? Thank you

      Hello,
      I understand your concern with the Elite. My recommendation is to reach out to ATS as they will login to your device and show you the reason why you are experiencing an inability to see more than two channels simultaneously.
      To answer your question regarding the WPS, you can only sample from one area at a time (unless you are using Multiple WPS500s. That would be very expensive. My advice would be to use a delta sensor, as they will
      Yield you the information quite easily. Save the WPS for in-cylinder Testing

    Hi Brandon. I want to buy a new scope, i have the snap on Vantage pro for long time but its time to update. Would you recommend me the Pico scope or Escope? I really like the Escope. Can you answer me whenever you can ? Thank you

      Both the EScope and PICO will serve you well. Both have their benefits and pitfalls but you can’t go wrong, either way.
      My recommendation to you, is to download the software for both scopes as it is totally free of charge. Use both of them, in demo mode… And compare for yourself. I own both, I use both, and I love both

    Give me some good reasons to buy the escope master kit rather than the pico master...ready,but can't make up my mind!

      Truth be told, you can’t go wrong with either. ATS has some uniques proprietary features that will serv you well. The tool is built for the field. Can handle 500vdc on all 4 (or 8) channels without attenuation.
      It captures up to 10,000 seconds in a deep record buffer without refreshing it. This means road tests will not leave you with dropped/lost data.
      The MEASURE tab allows you to connect your leads (up to 8 simultaneously) and just collect data. No need to set-up channels and voltage ranges.
      It has a TTL output which I use to serve as a “short-finder” or “open-wire finder”. (I can show you demonstrations). I found shorts in wires harnesses, without disassembly, in under 10 minutes.
      It has a MOSFET driver that can control components (like injectors, for pressure drop) and all sorts of nifty built-in tools.
      By the way...the support from ATS is second, to NONE! the family-owned company will get to know you on a fist-name basis.
      “Jeffery” is an absolute genius and specializes in computers but is also a 40 year veteran of being automotive technician and Ford master tech. THIS is who is at the helm of technical-support!

      I can send you any file you’d like. You can use the scope just as I have. You just need the hardware to “capture” the data....analysis won’t cost you a penny (as I demonstrate in the video)
