  • Come join me on a night drive down Bellaire Blvd. in Houston, Texas. We will go up and down Bellaire and into the parking lots to get a closer view of the businesses that are on the street.
It's pretty late in the evening, but many of the popular restaurants and cafes are still open, or just closing. Young people are meeting up for a socially-distanced boba tea in the parking lots, or on patios outside of cafes.
Families have finished grocery shopping and running errands, but a few are still enjoying some delicious pho. This drive will feature a lot of bright signs and shopping centers.
Bellaire Boulevard is part of a neighborhood in Houston, Texas frequently referred to as Chinatown, New Chinatown or Bellaire Chinatown. Bellaire is a road that runs east/west through the southwest side of Houston, Texas. Bellaire is packed with restaurants, cafes, bakeries and small shops, many of them family owned. It is also where many international companies that are primarily based out of Asia have their Houston locations.
Bellaire Boulevard is an economic powerhouse with many businesses and banks. East West Bank, Cathay Bank, Golden Bank, Chase, and Wells Fargo all have locations on this stretch of Bellaire. There are also many professional services such as doctors, lawyers, financial advisors and insurance agents with their offices on Bellaire.
New Chinatown is in reference to the fact that a previously existing neighborhood on the east side of Houston was also called Chinatown. New Chinatown is quite the misnomer, because the area has been developed since the 1980's and it also is home to many ethnic communities. The street signs in this area are listed in English and Chinese.
In recent years people have started to refer to Chinatown as Asiatown in an effort to more accurately describe the diversity of the Houston neighborhood.
We will start our drive further west on Bellaire Boulvevard, in an area often referred to as Little Saigon, in reference to the large Vietnamese community in the area. If you look closely you will be able to see that street signs are listed not just in English, but also in Vietnamese. This stretch of Bellaire is officially recognized as Saigon by the City of Houston.
It is difficult to see in the dark, but we will drive past a large Vietnam War Memorial that is located --- in a parking lot.
We will also pass Saigon Houston Plaza which features many different popular restaurants such as Kim Son and is the home of Radio Saigon Houston. One popular type of restaurant in Houston is Vietnamese - Louisiana style crawfish.
On the south side of Bellaire we will go through the parking lot for Hong Kong City Mall, also called HK4. www.hkcitymall... This mall has a large grocery store called Hong Kong Food Market, lots of restaurants in the food court, and a lot of different shops and professional services. As we drive around the outside of the mall you will be able to see some of the signage for stores in the mall, as well as some nicer sit-down restaurants located at the ends of the mall. The parking lot has lots of interesting decorative items such as the paifang arches and water features.

Bellaire Blvd is one of the streets I mostly know about. When it's to Chinatown, it never fails thanks to the nice restaurants especially this place called Chung Chun when you're close to Beltway 8

And if you could make a video night or day of Interstate 69 South to downtown Houston from like Humble, that would be great. I couldn't find many videos of that route. I like the videos with the best views of the downtown skyline, especially from a distance.
