Just completed this service early this morning after starting late yesterday afternoon . Something helpful to those who live in warm/hot climates who decide to perform this service when the engine has been running for hours. After several attempts to get the transmission into temperature check mode from 30 minute cool downs to over an hour, I decided after multiple attempts to let it sit overnight. That was the ticket. The truck did exactly like the video showed. I would encourage this service be done with a cold truck engine or slightly warm. The temperature check range is just too close to ambient to try it hot. Paperclip worked great. A gauge of wire smaller than 14 should also fit. Thanks!
All great info! Very true on how much the ambient temp can mess with this process. Glad you got it done in the end.
I accidentally made the idiotic mistake of loosening my transmission oil pan plug instead of my engine oil pan drain plug while changing engine oil. Enough drained out that I had to refill it and this video saved my ass so thanks!

FYI, the newer gen 3s (probably 2020 and newer) don't require the OBD to be jumped when doing temp check. At least that's the case with my 2020 SR. Just start it up and do the back and forth between neutral and drive and the gear indicator will disappear without the "Christmas lights." I found out the hard way that the newer gen 3 Tacos don't even have a terminal in port 13 on the OBD!

Thank you for this video! I followed this video changing my fluid on my 22 and it literally fixed all my hard transmission shifting from the factory truck. It turned out it was low by a 1/4qt from the factory.
I was literally about to sell the truck bc of how bad it was shifting for a new vehicle and this was after multiple trips to the dealer filing complaints who assured me they checked the fluid while the truck still shifted awful and said this how these trucks drive. My suspicion is this dealers techs were either inconfident on the fluid check process for the tacoma or they just lied and didn't do it. Either way, check your transmission fluid if your brand new truck is shifting hard and don't believe the dealer when they tell you its how these truck drive.
I was in the same boat. It's always unfortunate when a dealership does not uphold Toyota's good name and actually do their jobs. Glad it worked out for you! Happy to hear you are good to go.
Same bro, mine started slipping and it guzzled 2 quarts...!!! And mine was a 23!!!
Haven’t changed the trans fluid yet and my truck is at 100k I heard this can affect your transmission? Do you think it’s too late to change it?
100k isn't too late, approaching 150k gets a bit questionable.

Great Content, Thanks for listing socket sizes and part numbers! I feel Confident to do this on my own now, not too much more than an Oil change. I'm at 40k but thinking Ill do this drain and fill every 20-30k going forward to keep fluid fresh, and never drop the pan in the life of the truck.

I am in Florida and at the step getting into temp check mode. It’s about 85 outside in march. I have let my 2017 Tacoma. First attempt at solid D it was blinking. Let truck sit off for an hour and still blinking D. I’m going to wait 2 more hours, and then try again tomorrow morning. Can I still drain overflow if the D is blinking tomorrow? What if the temperature never gets cool enough?
Edit: had to wait till the next morning to get the light to a solid D. Took many hours, but it worked. Executed rest of process perfectly. Thanks for your video! Gave me confidence.

MAKE SURE YOUR AC IS OFF! The truck won’t go preform the temperature test. It took me a few tries to figure that out.
Interesting! Where did you find this online? I wanna source it and credit you.
@@teamoildrop
On a hot day just shifting the truck into reverse and drive 2 times might be enough to warm up the fluid to the point that it will drain out of the overflow.
When i put my truck into temp check mode, the shift position indicator disappeared for a couple seconds, then went to a solid D.
I have a 2016 tacoma with only 29k miles. Should I do the transmission fluid change now? Or should I wait a little bit more?
You’ll get various answers on this. I like to consider each year of age as 10k miles on fluids when mileage doesn’t meet it. That would put you at 70k on the fluid. It’s just a simple way to keep track of barely driven vehicles. Since the Toyota interval is 100k (60k severe), you’re fine either way. Drive another year or swap out transmission fluid. It’s due soon either way.
Tried to do an oil maintenance on my truck and I ended up messing with the transmission fluid 😂😂
😂 blame it on beer 🍻 (17 year old me did this to a 1989 bmw once)
Quick question - do you just do one of these drain and fills at the recommended 60k interval or multiple over the course of a few oil changes to ensure all the fluid turns over?
@@ovrt21 honestly it’s going to be up to you. I tend to do one d&f every 25k or so.
@@teamoildrop ok sounds good. I may do a few at a lower interval to cycle through the old fluid and then go to 25k intervals
Absolutely love your videos and appreciate all you do!
I am about to check the fluid level on my 2022 Tacoma but had a question from your other video when you pin the thermostat in before you start draining. Is it necessary to have it pinned in when filling and checking the level too? Or can you remove it once everything has drained?
Thanks brother! Once drained just go ahead and unpin back to normal.
@@teamoildropyou’re welcome! I seem to be stuck on getting the truck into the temperature check. I go back and forth between neutral and drive but the D never disappears. Any ideas?😭
@@redactedbass ya know i just did mine again the other day and it took a few attempts this time...
Do you have to do the temperature check mode? What happens if you don't do it? Like if I put the fluid in, cycle the transmission and then check the overflow, will it cause a problem?
Great question. It will cause a problem. The fluid expands with heat and should be at the proper temp to measure. Thus, temp check mode. See the notes if you have a 2020 or newer.
Question - Do I need to pin the thermostat on the side of the transmission before checking the fluid level? I've seen several videos where they would pin the thermostat first while others didn't. Not sure which way is correct. Thanks

So I barely got 2 quarts out of mine. I'm thinking it was under filled from the factory. Anyone else have thus issue?
This is a very common reported issue actually. Under filled / slightly under filled at the factory has been reported on countless occasions.
@@teamoildrop I guess what I'm going to do is add 3.5 like you did and let it drain until it's at a Trickle.
@@kyleguthrie4598 that’s the move!
@@teamoildrop so u just did it. I added around 3.75 quarts. It drained out around a quart till it trickled. Putting me at around 2.9 quarts or so. So basically it was around a quart low.
@@kyleguthrie4598 good job. Now you are at the proper level. Your truck thanks you.
Looking at the FSM, it states to basically do 3 drains and refills during the process: In otherwords
1)drain it
2)fill it until the fluid comes out the overflow, stop and and wait till it just drips
3) replace overflow and fill with 1.6qts (3.3 for your engine)
4) repeat steps 1-3, with the addition of shifting the gears like you did
5) drain once again, but install new drain plug gasket/washer and torque this time
6) repeat 2-3 once again, but torque everything down
Any idea why the process is so....convoluted in the FSM?
I was wondering the same thing.
the wording is a bit “wordy”. you are basically mixing in as much as you safely can each time to freshen it that much more each iteration! it’s the easiest way with these sealed trannys.

Wow you made this look really easy. This was the only maintenance procedure that I was going to go to the shop for, but after this video I'm confident doing it myself. Thanks a ton!
I will say... I make it look easy but please go slow and take your time... I have had plenty of cursing off-camera moments. Either way, its NOT hard. Enjoy!
Very clear message 😊
Here's what I do to check the temperature.
It sounds comical but it works great.
After and before filling the fluid, I take a meat thermometer with a long cord or Bluetooth. I use Bluetooth.
Take out the overflow plug. Use a high temp silicone plug from Amazon.
Insert the probe through the silicone plug and cork the hole. Fill with the fluid.
After it reaches between 104 to 113 degrees, you just Uncork and drain to trickle. You're complete. 😊
There's no hassle of trying to time the temperature with the vehicle computer.
Simple... yet genius! I like it!
Thanks for this video, my change was successful, glad you covered everything as I had the blinking indicator, would have never known had you not mentioned that. Good job.

Good videos. I wish tho you would start the camera from outside the truck then move to camera to where we’ll be working. Like with the drain plug…you just went right to the drain plug. But for us amateurs it would really help if you started the camera from the outside of truck and move underneath to give better reference points and where these things are located.
I totally see that! And I’ll keep it in mind. Thanks for the words and recommendations.
I love your video, after watching it i feel really comfortable doing it myself, but i must ask: why would you flush your fluids without replacing the trans fluid filter?
Thanks! This involves a pan drop, but even then, most 3rd gens have wire screen filters that don’t get replaced unless damaged. I’ve taken mine out before to make sure I didn’t have a fibrous one. A future pan drop vid will cover 🍺
Do you just turn off the truck after the temp check mode, or does it go away on itself
goes away after temp check but good to restart regadless!

I’m struggling to find the fill plug. Based on the video it’s obviously in a weird spot, but looking in the same area as your video shows I cannot find a 24mm bolt. I think some of the newer gen 3s may have the fill bolt in a different area. I have a ‘22 TRD Sport 2WD. Can you provide some guidance? Thanks!
2WD have a different spot. Hop int he discord if you havent already and we can show you.
That's nowhere near as hard as i thought it would be. Now i know my next weeks project.
A lot of guys think the color is indicative of fluid condition… It is NOT!! You must send the sample in to be analyzed. The old Toyota WS had a tracer dye that changed color from RED to PURPLE when exposed to UV. This has been long discontinued (old Toyota bottles) but the new red dye (all atf starts out life clear when blended) simply wears out over time and changes color. Work on a few hundred of these Aisin transmissions and you will see WS is a superior fluid with units lasting well into the half a million mile mark with little maintenance! Great video for DIY folks 👍🏻
Thank you for the additional information
Always great to get input from Technicians
The Editor
This whole series is great. Brakes? Done! Oil? Done! I do have a question on the transmission fluid. The spec for the trucks states a capacity of 10.6qt of ATF, but maintenance takes 3-4qts? Is the manual wrong? Are there now 6 quarts of old ATF in there mixing with the new stuff?
Thanks for the words! So the way we do this is the same way a dealership does it. Drain about 40% of the fluid and replace with fresh. If you do this once, great, twice, even better, 3 times, good as new pretty much. The only other option really is to do a complete pump through of all new fluid but this is expensive, unnecessary, and debatably not the best move. Many consider the old fluid to contain deposits and microscopics from transmission wear to continue to be good for the moving parts.

Perform the transmission oil change COLD.
I just did the oil drain and fill on my 2017 TRD Off Road your instructions were perfect.
Thank you
That was going to be my next question if the trans needed to be cold or hot. Thanks!!
It's certainly better to do this with a cold engine and trans, but it's not required. The chances of burns are worth doing the service cold though.
Greg the Editor
It's best to do it cold. Not to mention the safety factor of burns, the trans temp needs to be >95*F to check the fluid level.
Awesome tutorial! What is the name of that kind of wire and where can you get one?
Thank you! It’s honestly just a small piece of cheap wire. Anything to make contact between point a and b will work, even a paperclip!
Hello sir....Roy from Yuma, Arizona. My Tacoma is a 2019 with a 4 wheel drive unit. It has 75K on and am thinking about having the transmission serviced. 95 percent of my miles are on pavement, but I do live in a dusty area. Would you recommend changing out the filter as well on the trannie? Thanks.
Hey brother! I’ve been needing to make a deeper dive transmission video but pretty much all of us have metal mesh filters that don’t get changed out unless damaged. I’ll show as soon as I can 😌
why not just bring the transmission fluid dipstick back?
Wouldn’t that be nice
@@teamoildrop Besides preventing people from changing the fluid themselves, I don't see any benefit of this stupid design.
One question I have, the Toyota manual makes mention of bypassing the thermostat for the trans cooler by pushing the plunger in and using a hex key to hold it in while you do the check procedure. Is there a reason that you did not do this? I have a 2017 with the Trans Cooler so I am not sure if it causes a false reading or not by skipping that step. Thanks.
Hey! I too have a trans cooler and tow package. I never bother as it will eventually circulate through. I don’t recall it in the Toyota TSB either, however I could be mistaken on that one.
That new pump you put a link to is gonna be a must have! Did transmission fluid today and there’s so much fluid in the traditional pump (tubes and the pump body) it’s actually hard to tell when you hit 3.5 quarts!
@@Taylor510ce very true! Yeah that new one is a great little addition 😎

During Temp Check how much fluid do you want to see come out of the overflow plug to be satisfied? If it doesn't gush out but there's a small stream would you call it good or add more?
It’s a bit subjective. The actual verbiage from the Toyota service write up is indeed “small trickle”. I wouldn’t think into it much past that and you’ll be good 👍
Awesome, thank you so much for your response and an awesome video!
Hello , I did the drain and fill and put in 4 quarts in total but I never did the Temp check mode
Do you think It will affect overall?
It's really hard to say. Many transmissions have been found to be 1/2 to one full quart low from the factory. You could be low or you could have over filled it.
Did you measure how much you took out? Too high of level can be just as bad as too low.
I would suggest completing the temp check and overflow portion of the task.

Man this is such a good video, the whole thing, from the production, to the instructions.
Love to hear it!
What about dropping the pan & changing/cleaning the trans filter, is that an option and also get more fluid changed as well?
Good question! I’ll be dropping the pan in a future video. However, as for the filter, most of us have a metal screen permanent type that only gets replaced if damaged. Some of us do have a fibrous filter that can be changed but not many.
All of the videos I’ve watched show people dropping the pan. This was nice to see done
@@ogdadbod pan drops serve a purpose like making sure you don’t have metal bits stuck to the magnets and ensuring your filter isn’t clogged etc, but not needed often. I’ll cover it soon.

No difference, but the overall capacity will be greater with the external, radiator mounted transmission cooler.

What socket depth/brand used? And torque wrench model and male end size?
I am having trouble getting to the full plug. Either it’s not long enough to get around the transmission, or it’s too long and it hits the body. Thanks

At this time I also use a Dewalt 3/8” drive socket wrench for measurements up to 100 ft lbs.
Great video! I drained my 19 Tacoma this morning with transmission cold and only 2.5 qts. Drained. Should I follow same procedure by adding 3 1/2 quarts and do the temperature check? Thanks
Yes, better to slightly overfill and remove excess than to under fill!
-Austin
How do I know when I should just drain and fill vs when I should actually drop the pan, do the gasket, bushings, and filter??
2017 with 82k
Unfortunately we don't get an interval from Toyota on the filter, so that one is more up to your own discretion on if you'd like to replace the filter when doing a fluid change. Toyota lays out a 60k fluid change interval for severe duty and 120k for normal duty. We like to err on the side of doing all maintenance items on the "severe" timeline just to keep everything extra healthy!
-Austin
Isn't there a transmission filter that needs to be changed along with a magnet that needs to be cleaned by removing the transmission pan?
The “filter” is wire mesh and more like a trap. It’s permanent unless damaged. There are magnets! I’ll be dropping the pan soon as I’m back in the US to show y’all everything.
Where did you get that big old box jug of atf ws? And how my h if you don't mind me asking?

You can, but this way ensures it's as full as it should be.
As stated below, yes, you can. However, how do you know it was properly serviced previously. There have been several accounts of transmissions being 1/2 to 1 quart low from the factory.
My 2023 was just over 1/2 quart low when I checked the fluid level at 450 miles.

@Team Oil Drop What AWG is that copper wire? Sorry, the only thing I couldn't ascertain from this detailed video. Thinking 24 or 20 AWG would work here. Going to use this procedure for my ES 350.
Hey brother! As long as it fits it’s good to go. You can safely even use a paperclip. No amount of current is being passed beyond just the truck talking to itself. As for the wire I used… I can’t recall. Gauge similar to a paperclip.

Is there a filter in the transmission pan?
There is BUT it’s a metal screen. I’ll get around to showing us soon.
Sounds good, thank you for the awesome videos. I like to do my own maintainance. I do not trust shops. I have heard too many horror stories and when I was younger I worked at 2 dealerships. I saw a enough to learn not to trust.
@@hd114ul7 same boat brother, same boat. They aren’t all bad, but unfortunately many are. It’s been my pleasure 🍻
I just did this but now I'm thinking...If the truck isn't 100% level will that cause more fluid than necessary to drain out of the overflow? Ground was level, but truck has a slight forward rake.
While I’ve never heard this discussed, taking in the factory rake in the measurement id lean on the side of safe. Yes, a dealerships will have the truck on a lift negating the rake, but we as the human race have been swapping fluids in sealed trannys for years while bound to the ground.
I put a level under the frame and raised lower end to level.
Thank you for the video! Can you tell me, is this what you recommend at every say 30K miles? VS what they call a flush? So basically 3.5 quarts every 30K?
You’re welcome! It’s really up to you. Doing this once every 30k would be great or doing it 3 or 4 times in one day would get you so clean you could ride another 100k 😎
@@teamoildrop ,
Ok.
If we were to do it 3 times in a day, do we only do the temp check on the last 3. Quarts?
@@thenavigator5889 if I were in your shoes, yes, I'd drain and replace the same amoutn, drive aroud the block twice, then last time follow these exact steps
Just curious..what gauge wire did you use at the OBD 2. Thanks.
Ya know it’s been so long… was about the thickness of a paper clip or so… and you can even use a paper clip instead haha
Far superior to other UA-cam tutorials because it focuses on the more complicated procedures (for novices) the other ones skip over.
Thanks! I try to be thorough
Reading that changing the transmission strainer at 60k to 75k on the 3rd gen is a good idea. Any thoughts?

Hello
Please provide the part number for the o-ring on the fill plug?
Appreciate it
90301-15004 is the Toyota part number for it, but you don't necessarily need to use this part as a replacement. It's just a standard O ring and any that matches in size will work just fine as well!

HELP. So I only got 2qt of fluid out of my drain. I added 2.5qt like what was shown, on the later steps when I was letting the overflow drain it was coming out and I stupidly shut off the engine which then allowed .5qt of fluid to come out. So in my mind I'm good because it came out to an even 2 quarts? Or did I screw myself. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you for the video!
Bets option here is still to add fluid and go through the proper temp check mode. Its THE way to be safe and sure.
@@teamoildrop do you think I should add another half quart or more than that? Two quarts seemed pretty low to me. I did this on a complete cold start. So the truck was only running for the time it took to do the initial temp check process and the overflow drain.
@@whydidtheybringthisback add another whole one, then run the process. You’ll be good. More to mix in with the old anyway

Thank you brother! 🍻
Where can I get the wire you put inside port? I’m at 90,000. Should I do drain and refill or flush
Any, and I mean any, piece of little copper wire or even a paperclip is fine.
I did grain and fills like this. A flush would involve a pressure system. To each their own but a couple drain and fills is great per my opinion and Toyota service manuals.
@@teamoildrop thank you for responding back once again, this is my first Taco truck from having a bow tie and a ford. I bought the truck at 88,000 miles
Awesome video tutorial and good job at explaining! Subbed and Liked
I have a question, when you measured the amount of fluid drained (the 3 Qts), was it only after removing just the drain plug?
Or did you measure the fluid after removing both drain plug AND overflow plug?
Thanks!👍
Thank you! And that was after removing the drain plug. If you drain it from the drain plug nothings coming out of that little overflow.
Thanks again bro 🙏

I’m almost at 60k and i drive a heavy load so will be doing this service at dealer. Just not sure how to request this service. As a drain and fill, flush or fluid change. My dealer doesn’t seem to want to do it until i hit 100k
Most dealerships I’ve talked to call it a drain and fill as well. A flush would be a complete pump through of the fluid that some dealerships may do. 100k is very safe still so your call.
